Typical diner look and feel. Family owned and operated, and I loved the vibe there. Everyone seemed happy, and the servers and owners worked alongside each other and it seemed very comfortable and friendly. Menu was typical minus the gyros on the menu. That is not often found at your typical diner, but it was made well, if a bit on the saucy side. I had the Texas burger, and it was delicious. It wasn't pretty, but it was really good. The fries were perfectly cooked, and crispy. The servers were always circling, refilling, quick and friendly. I did get a bit of sticker shock on the prices. Expensive. Probably too expensive to go back often, especially with a family of 4. I don't think anything on the menu was less than $11.00, and I would say the average for a burger or sandwich was $13.95, which seems high to me. This is the best restaurant in Anchorage! Excellent service. You feel like you're part of their family! Their food is hot and delicious. My son and I try to go every Saturday. It's always packed but it's worth waiting in line for a table. Everything I've had there has been excellent! I adore this place. The food is always on point. The chicken soup is amazing, as is the Philly (and everything else I've ever ordered). It is clean from top to bottom. While the food is stellar, I give it 5 stars because the of the staff. I believe it is family run, and they do it very, very well. "Momma" (I have no idea what her real name is), is amazing to watch. By all I shouldn't even give them one star. This was my first and my last visit there. I came in by myself on a busy day and they wanted to seat me at the bar on a stool. I am not comfortable sitting on a backless chair so I asked about a table. They started to seat me at a table, then told me I had to wait for the two people behind me that were waiting for a table. At that point, a booth came open so they seated the couple there and had me go back to the table. I felt very uncomfortable and unwelcome there. I went ahead and sat down and they gave me a cup of coffee. I looked at the menu briefly and decided to pay for the coffee and leave. It seemed as if they didn't appreciate anybody coming in alone to dine. There are plenty of other as good or better restaurants in town which I will be patronizing from now on. read more

Cinnamon roll was voted best we ever had, sourdough pancakes taste like sourdough should, Western Omelette was delicious with real cheddar, bacon and hash browns were good balance of crispy and tender. What a breakfast... the omelet was very good, and quite large and fluffy but packed with meat and veggies. The "side" of pancakes was huge! They were really good too: light and fluffy and very hot. After a less than stellar breakfast yesterday, we tried Southside Grill this morning. Bright, clean, friendly, and ready to handle a party of six quickly. Our waitress was speedy with the coffee and took our orders. The food came out fast and was done exactly as requested - my poached eggs were perfect and the pancakes were light and fluffy. Bacon was cooked just right, too. My companions tried one of the skillets, a avocado bacon and cheese omelet, and ham and cheese omelet. Only quibble: the syrup was definitely not maple, even though one of the guys asked and was assured it was. Came here on a Saturday at noon and we were greeted with a friendly hello. The place was packed so we sat at the bar. We saw the huge omelets coming out of the kitchen so I know this is a popular place for breakfast and brunch. We both had sandwiches and the winner was the Philly cheese steak - excellent hoagie roll which is the secret. It also came with au jus dipping sauce which I thought added extra flavor. My gyro was good but not great. What stands out most about this place is the customer service- friendly, attentive, and you can tell they really care about giving their diners a good experience. First of all, there are some reviewers who have been to "Southside Bistro" which is a different establishment at a different place. Southside GRILL is a family owned breakfast/ lunch / dinner place along the lines of a diner. As you drive down Old Seward south of the Huffman roundabout, it is about a mile further on to the right in its own building and parking area. Looks a bit run down. It caters to local clientele who clearly love it and if you go there you may enjoy the local color. Foodwise it is average. Nothing bad, just good average. I had a medium pricy dish of halibut and chips. The finger sized pieces of halibut did not strike me as the freshest and it was fried fine and it was edible, but a tad undercooked. They had malt vinegar but I had to ask for it. I really liked the fries and there were plenty of them. The ketchup came in a squeeze bottle and did not taste like my favorite, Heinz. The pepper was in a shaker and definitely was not even close to fresh. There were two small flat lemon slices, which you can't squeeze the juice from as you can from lemon wedges. The soup choice was between a nonspectacular clam chowder provided with a saltine and a beef/ vegetable cup which looked good. In fact the server tried to give me the beef soup when I'd ordered the chowder. Other than that service was prompt and cheerful. People there were definitely enjoying themselves. I might go back for something simple like pancakes and syrup or some over-easy eggs. I'll save my serious meal money for a more sophisticated place. read more

Waitress somehow forgot to tell us about this charge when we ordered and I don't recall seeing this charge noted on the menu. Met there this morning with a few friends for a late breakfast. Wanted to try somewhere new and heard it was a nice place. When I walked in it was seat yourself, so there was an open table I found for my group. Service was pretty quick and food was good, normal serving sizes. Everything went well until after paying the tab and leaving a 20% tip for the good service, we were kindly asked to leave as there were a few people waiting to be seated. We won't be repeat customers, once and done. We all felt that was extremely rude, not like we were going to sit there for an extra hour, on top of the 50 minutes we occupied the table. Will stick with IHOP, never asked to leave there, even with lots of customers waiting. read more
