The selection is exactly what you'd expect for a diner type restaurant, lots of breakfasts, hot sandwiches, and burgers. The fries, soups, and other sides are great too. The best part of this restaurant is the lack of TVs, loud music, and other distractions! You can actually have a conversation with someone while you eat food, who would have thought places like this still exist! The servers are welcoming and kind. This is a small place that's crowded, so there's a waiting line the entire time they are open. That's a testament to the food served here. We started off with a cup of Chicken Florentine soup, which is complimentary with a sandwich order. The soup was one of the most flavorful soups we had ever tasted. I ordered the house grilled Chicken Sandwich with mushrooms (sans bacon) and I kid you not, it was the BEST chicken I had tried. It was juicy, crunchy on the edges and loaded with flavor. My wife agreed that if we had this sandwich at home, we would have it everyday. She had their Turkey Club Sandwich and it was loaded high. Off the beaten path but definitely worth checking out. We came here on fourth of July and there weren't many other customers there. I had the Reindeer sausage with egg whites, hash browns, and pancakes. My husband got the Reindeer sausage and cheese skillet. The meat and eggs were great, and the pancakes were super fluffy and soft. The hash browns were only ok, so I wouldn't get those again, but otherwise I was quite happy with what we had. read more

Good old fashion, Mama's cookin' eggs, bacon, flapjacks, biscuits and gravy type of place. Reliable consistency in both service and food. They seem to have an army of wait staff marching laps around the restaurant with a coffee pot like they understand the assignment. Last time I was there, I started to complain to my daughter about their prices. I had an epiphanal moment when my daughter responded by telling me that everything was cheaper when I was a kid and now I say everything is too expensive....she is right. I didn't want to review this place, because I want it all to myself. Everyone already knows about it though, because it was pretty busy when we came in. Nonetheless, we were greeted and seated lightning fast! Seemed like a family run business, which is exactly how I like it. We ordered our food and it came with a complimentary cup of soup. It was beef and vegetables. Sounds simple, but was simply amazing! So flavorful. I've never had a cup of soup be so satisfying. Especially since I only came for the clam chowder that they didn't have on this particular day. I had a grilled ham and cheese. It came with a side of lettuce and pickle and half a plate of fries! Lol. It was a ton of fries. I also ordered a side of potato salad just to see how good it is. It was great. My grilled ham and cheese was a tad soggy on the bottom. Probably from sitting. The food comes out crazy fast. There are more than 5 plates and bowls in the window at a time. It's nuts! It was still really good and heavy on the ham and melty cheese. My husband had a French dip. It was huge and he also had fries. He said the au jus was so good he needed to bring a cup home with the other half of his sandwich. This place gives you an insane amount of good food at a great affordable price. My son had the silver dollar pancakes. They were so light and fluffy. The only issue, which wasn't really an issue, was there were ten and they were bigger than a silver dollar. To be honest I only tried on if his pancakes. I wish I lived closer so I could come here more often! This last visit I got the Spanish omelet alacarte (-$2 from full breakfast price) and it was phenomenal. The eggs were fluffy and the ingredients were fresh. I did not like the from a jar salsa though, I feel like they could make a killer homemade salsa! My boyfriend's breakfast was delicious and seemed very filling. The pancakes were large and fluffy, just how they should be. Pricing is moderate and about the average you'd find around town. Happened to be on the Southside today and decided to drop in to Southside Grill for breakfast. Ordered standard bacon & eggs with sourdough toast and fried potatoes. I'd forgotten how good the breakfast potatoes were here. Reminiscent of those at Gwennies ( a breakfast favorite when I'm on the West Side). Southside Grill does a great breakfast and has some awesome lunch items as well. Check the grease board for daily specials as they always have good deals. Well, shame on ME for never knowing about this place! It's nestled in stripmall (why do I keep noting this? This is every place in Anchorage.) on the south side of town. It's definitely a local hangout, and most of the folks here seem to be from this part of town. What I'm saying is: us Bootlegger's Cove/Spenard folk stuck out like a sore THUMB. But you know what? Everyone was super nice to us anyway! Food is solid, no-frills diner food. Toast comes pre-buttered, you pay at the front, and they have "Spanish" sauce. I got the Spanish skillet and added jalepenos. It was a great comfort breakfast. Interior was bright and filled with activity. Very great coffee and French toast, the people I went with said their food was good too. My brother likes the ultimate skillet from village inn and he ordered something similar here, he said that the one here was way better at VI. Anyway, although Mama is great the service is basically take the order, enter it in, bring the food and coffee and maybe take out containers and disappear. And even so we tip REEEEEAALLY well. Really well. Well today we just happened to NOTICE that they add an 18% gratuity to the check and don't bother to tell us. If they don't tell us who's been coming in there once a month since the get go I'm guessing the fail to mention it to anybody. To us that is deceitful especially coupled with the fact that we work our asses off for our money and leave a considerable amount of cash because we consider the server serving us one of us and out of mutual respect we tip well BUT in return they just add an 18% gratuity and don't bother to let us know that the tip is already taken care of???? Maybe out of respect for us? Family so to speak? Nope. We still would've left a tip but now if we go back there for our monthly we may fail to leave our usually expected extra gratuity. Just saying.
