Meeting a friend for lunch on a Sunday afternoon, she recommended we come to Southside Super. I had never heard of this place or dined here before so I was excited to try something new! When we arrived, it was fairly crowded, but we managed to place our order at the register and snag a seat inside. Unfortunately, having arrived later in the day, all of the hot and cold to-go items were sold out. I decided to try the chicken pho from their made-to-order menu. My friend ordered the spam fried rice. The food came out relatively quickly, and you can tell that it is absolutely made with the utmost care, love, and highest quality of ingredients. This was hands-down some of the best chicken pho I have ever had in my life. This spot used to be the former June's Cafe. The narrow diner has a long counter with a few tables and chairs along the side. You can watch the cooks at work while you eat! There are options to choose items from the refrigerated section or you can order hot food. You go to the back of the restaurant and order at the register. Had lunch here on a Sunday afternoon, make sure you pay attention to the hours, they close at 2:00 on Sundays. I got the chicken pho which came with a Chinese doughnut. Very interesting combo. The amount of chicken was just right, I would have preferred more flavoring with the broth however. Maybe I'm just used to traditional pho? My brother loved his beef pho however. Food seems a little pricey, the Galbi Jjim I got was a little too sweet for my taste, it would fit someone who likes to eat food on the sweeter side. My family has been coming here since they opened. This place is a Sacramento gem. The food is amazing. I think they have the best kimchi fried rice and chicken pho ever. There is grab and go hot/cold food as well as hot food made to order. Order at the cashier and find a place to sit. Indoor seating is limited but they have outdoor seating that can seat 4-6 people depending on how many tables are available. The interior is cozy with a great esthetic. I ended up at Southside Duper having had to go on the hunt for a new pho spot after learning that my go-to pho spot closed and my other favorite is only open on weekdays. It's small little restaurant m tucked away on V street with only three indoor tables and bar seating but don't let that deter you from checking out their spring rolls and pho. I have a hard time finding chicken pho and I blame Turtle Tower in San Francisco for making me a fan of the Northern style pho because here and there I crave it but it's awfully difficult to find it in Sacramento. Im glad Southside Super can fill this void. The chicken pho is made in the Northern style. The distinction is the clear and more subtle broth. You aren't going to get a ton of sauces and garnishes on the side with this bowl of pho. There is no siracha and hoisin sauce to punch you in the face and wake you up after a long night out. Still, there is a lot of flavor to this type of pho and it's an incredibly comforting dish. The chicken makes for a lighter meal than beef but it's still a satisfying meal. The service was efficient and friendly and a team member did mention they are working on adding Vietnamese coffee to the menu. I think that will take things to the next level for this spot and I'm looking forward to having Vietnamese coffee with my next bowl of pho. read more

Tried Southside Super on a Sunday afternoon and it a packed house! We decided to just do take out and eat at home and only got the items in the deli case. Since it was the afternoon, they didn't have much left. I was really looking forward to trying the kimbap, but there's always next time! We got the commoner's rice (came with pickled mustard greens) and an egg sandwich. The egg sandwich was decent, but nothing stood out. I like how they tried to incorporate different textures such as having whole pieces of boiled eggs. The commoner's rice was the highlight of the meal. The braised pork belly was soft and flavorful. Loved the quail eggs too! The register is at the back of the shop and the tables and seating is in the front. I'm not sure if you're supposed to order first and then sit down, since we weren't really greeted when we came in. A pretty narrow and tight spot so keep that in mind. Recently visited for lunch. Affordable price compared to a lot of other lunches downtown. Easy to find parking, a good amount of seats within the restaurant. I ordered their tomato and meatballs with an egg. The meatballs were flavorful but I really liked their pickled veggies that came with it, which I thought gave it a nice touch. I also ordered a side of their pho broth. That was so delicious, I really wished I got their pho instead to be honest. Next time I visit, I know what I'm going to order. I've been looking for more great places to grab kimbap and this place fits the bill. Plus, the food is tasty and the service is good. I tried the Spring rolls with shrimp and pork (sauce was great), and the bulgolgi kimbap. It was so great that I took some spam kimbap, cucumber salad, and another bulgolgi kimbap to go. A small place to grab a quick bite to eat. Dropped by monday for lunch and the resturant had many other patrons. They had an area of pre-made food in a heater and Kimbap next to it. There's also a menu to order different food from. I ended up getting a bulgogi Kimbap. It had carrot, egg, yellow radish in it. I was hoping there would be some spinach but the lack of spinach didnt affect the taste. Was just trying to get some more fiber. Otherwise everything else was good. I've heard so much hype about Southside Super and had to see what it was all about. After trying them once, I understood why people were so crazy about SS. On my initial visit, I had the egg salad sandwich, pickled cucumbers, Spam kimbap, shrimp spring rolls and Korean bento box. The egg salad sandwich was phenomenal! It was the best eggs salad sandwich I've ever had. It wasn't just plain eggs. There were cucumbers as well as crispy garlic, and sesame. It was a serious game changer for me. I had to come back the next day because I couldn't stop thinking about the sandwich. I also got the Spam kimbap, beef kimbap, japchae and cucumbers. I knew my family would love the kimbap, so I got several of the Spam and beef ones for my niece. She loved it so much that she inhaled everything and didn't share. Mental note to self: get my niece her own rolls. On my first visit, I didn't know what to expect a first. I thought it was just a place you can come pick up food, but I saw that they had a counter that served Vietnamese food. SS is a very small place with only 2 2-top tables and a counter that didn't seat that many. I was also told that if you don't get there early they will usually sell out of there more popular items. So when I go, I try to go as early as I possibly can or as close to their opening time to get the items I really want. The staff are very nice and helpful. Finally had a chance to try Southside Super, their hours are limited and cater more to the lunch crowd. Location is quaint, plenty of street parking, and also a small dedicated lot to the side. I love the decor and aesthetic of the eatery, they did an excellent job maximizing a small space while keeping it cozy and cute. Due to the small space, make sure you walk all the way to the back and order at the register first, before you claim a table to sit! The service here was A+, the server who took my order was very friendly and welcoming, he helped give some recommendations on popular items. I was hoping to try their premade kimbap in the deli section, but it was late in the day so there were none left. I ended up ordering 2 items to go: - Xiu mai: a vietnamese style meatball served as a sandwich or over rice. I opted for the sandwich version per the server's recommendation! The baguette itself was delicious, perfectly crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. The sandwich was served with a soupy dip, which wasn't really my style- it was tomato based but not super flavorful, and kind of too acidic for my taste. - Lemongrass beef noodle salad: bun thit nuong with lemongrass beef. I could definitely taste the lemongrass flavor, but the beef was a little on the salty side. As others have mentioned, the fish sauce is not super flavorful. Super fun spot with kimbap and hot plates to go. I would dare to say one of the best grab and go spots in all of Sacramento. I narrowly made it into the restaurant and staff and patrons bustled around the tables in the narrow place. Reminiscent of an old skool lunch counter, Korean fusion was on every happy customers plate. I decided to go with the spam kimbap, bulgolgi kimbap, and what I can only simply describe as a Korean take of lou ro fan (Taiwanese soy pork belly over rice). I then grabbed some self serve water and grabbed a seat. They want you to order before you sit down. I sat on one of the 2 seat tables opposite the counter.
