Next time I'll go to Beck's Prime which is nearby instead. Burger Joint has a better, less expensive burger & an assortment of aiolis. Southwell's only had pickled jalapeños. The kind woman at the register said something like,"How about grilled jalapeños ?", but they didn't have any when she went to the kitchen to ask. I ordered waffle fries after reading a review. WHAT! Southwell's is a Houston Legend and a specialty shop which has wonderful burgers and great chicken sandwiches, juicy and fresh and tasty with plenty of chicken on them. Barbi has been to a couple of them with me and she agrees, they have excellent burgers and really great chicken sandwiches. They're not cheap but they're not expensive, and service is usually great at all the different locations, including this one, which was having a huge problem with a very angry customer/homeless person (I couldn't tell which) but was still nice to me when they finally served me. There are 4 locations, and I've been to 3 so far. There might be more I don't know about. Southwells definitely have some of the best sandwiches in town and we always appreciate every single bite. I wanted to like it better. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't particularly impressive. The service wasn't horrible, but it wasn't particularly friendly or welcoming. The food did come out quick, fresh, and hot. It was better than a fast food chain, but it didn't wow me. Maybe the burger needed a bit more seasoning. Even the atmosphere and decor fell short. Southwell's on Fountain View is a great spot to get a burger if you're near Uptown. The fries taste fresh, and the ingredients of the burger taste fresher than other burger places in the area. That being said, you can find a better burger if you spend $30 on a gourmet one. But this gets 5/5 because it provides exactly what it advertieses: a good, fresh, classic American burger. It's small and you order at the counter where the menu is right above it, they have a good selection of burgers and chicken sandwiches, and they also offer veggie patties for any of them which was nice. (I don't eat beef so that's what I got when my husband said he was wanting burgers.) They deliver the food to your table when it's ready, and you seat yourself. I ordered the mushroom burger with the veggie patty, it was really good, it had a nice crust on it, they served it on a wheat bun and I included all the vegetables on it which were tomato, lettuce, onions, and of course mushrooms and Swiss. Had to update the review just on quality of burger. Unfortunately not the best patty but good bun and fries. Gave it a 3 off of my first experience and went back just to give it a second try and unfortunately it still was pretty bland of a burger but enjoyed the brownie and the hand cut fries are skinny but good. Went here for the first time on a friend's recommendation in 2016, while visiting from out of town. I remember the mushroom burger being juicy and the sweet potato fries having just enough crunch. It was by far my favorite burger in Houston. But the food and service really seem to have gone downhill. I have ordered to-go twice (once pre-COVID and once during), and both times I was seriously underwhelmed. Both times we ordered on the telephone, the employee who took our order sounded annoyed that we even called and generally unpleasant. This would be all right if the food was stellar, but it's not. The fries were soggy and flavorless, and the burger was dry and bland. I agree with the reviewer who said it reminded him of cafeteria food. I thought maybe the first time was a hiccup. This place is a lot of bang for your buck. The fried onion rings and waffle fries are amazing! They also make a really nice grilled chicken sandwich. The burgers are also very good and not too greasy which is a plus. H-E-B offers coupons on the back of the receipt for a free burger with purchase of burger + fries & drink. They are very good about always honoring the coupon which is great if you're a frequent H-E-B shopper. Note it can always be used for the grilled chicken sandwich. Every other table has an X on the corner to discourage people from sitting too close to it. Went in for the first time today and was pleasantly surprised. I had the Larry's special without onions. Fresh cut fries! It's the main reason to come here. The chicken sandwich was passable, the waffle fries were typical, but the fresh cut fries are worth coming back for. We got here at 8pm on a Saturday night and the place was almost empty. The lighting inside makes you feel like you are in a morgue. Everything glows an eerie green. She gave me a take out menu because she knew the blackboard on the wall wasn't easy to read. We ordered two chicken sandwiches and two different types of fries. We got two diet cokes, and they have the YUMMY sonic-style ice. Those of us who love our ice know that sonic has great ice, and now I know Southwell's does too! All of this for under $20. Our food arrived quickly, delivered to our table. Ketchup was delivered as well as napkins. The food was good. The chicken was the slightest bit rubbery, but overall the sandwiches were good. My husband really enjoyed his supreme chicken sandwich (cheese, bacon, and 1000 island dressing). The best part of the meal (besides the ice) were the fresh cut fries. Delicious! We decided to try the chocolate cake as dessert. We shared it and thank goodness we did. It's RICH. Definitely not made there, it appears to be a generic boxed cake from somewhere else. Anyways what I remembered is the help behind the counter are pretty nice, the cooks will stand there and look at you funny no matter what time you come in, where you seat or what you order but they cook some pretty good food. A little expensive for some semi Wendy's type patties and I don't remember getting much but it beats almost any fast food burger place. Very unassuming burger joint - does not disappoint! I'd seen the location off of Taylor St. hundreds of times but never even considered it. After moving to a new home right off San Felipe I popped in on New Years for the first time and wow. I'm a San Antonio Transplant and the king of burgers is Chris Madrid's over there. But here, I believe Southwell's knows what they are doing. No nonsense Capital-B Burgers. The meat is juicy, the veggies are crisp and fresh, and the bacon is incredible. Always trust a burger place who defaults their cheese to cheddar. Southwell's has instantly become my favorite burger place in Houston for non-gimmicky, aptly priced burgers. I hope more people find out about this place and you know I'll be one of their evangelists from now on. Also, I'd say to disregard any complaints about staff as I saw several members of the staff disrespected, and it seems like they have some loyal employees who must get worn down through the day.
