I can count the number of five stars I give out on one hand or part of one hand. What a terrific restaurant. German restaurants are few and far between these days. New York City used to have quite a few but now you really have to hunt for them. I remember as a little boy my father take me to Jager House on E. 86th St. which is long gone. Queens had a number of them and I think it's down to Zum Stammichen. Classic German dishes very well prepared. My wife is a veggie and she found really delicious vegetarian dish which is not an easy thing to do in German restaurants. Take a break from Italian food and try this out whether you're familiar with German food or not. Staff was very friendly. We were there on a Saturday night and it should've been more crowded. If you live in the Glens Falls/ Lake George southern Adirondacks area try to support this business you won't be sorry. And if you are a tourist pay it a visit! read more

We were excited to find a German restaraunt to try. My wife and I went for dinner and overall enjoyed the meal. The location feels fresh and modern (was formerly an Outback but they did a great job with the updates). The menu was pretty typical German fare. Our server Brandon was very attentive and super nice. I had the pork schnitzel which was excellent. The potato pancakes I ordered were very good but maybe a little greasy. Don't get me wrong I ate both. I also ordered green beans wrapped in bacon - no clue what was in this but I did not like the beans at all. My wife ordered the pork shank which she enjoyed. With it she ordered sauerkraut - neither of us cared for it - I think it was the spice in the sauerkraut - maybe cloves and perhaps traditional (no idea) but we didn't care for it We would go back again for sure read more

To name your restaurant after a vegetable is, well, unique. But then again everything about this restaurant is a bit unique. If you are used to German food you probably notice they all taste relatively the same. Slight variations. Not here. They take your traditional German cuisine and take it up a notch. This is, by far, the best German food I have had in ages....but that isn't all that is great about this restaurant... They have Weihenstephan and only Weihenstephan beers. But that doesn't mean it doesn't have variety. They have 7 Weihenstephan beers on tap. The greatest thing about this restaurant is customer service. Absolutely make sure you feel at home. Have been trying to make the trip for a while now and decided our wedding anniversary was a perfect opportunity. Mitchell was fantastic, explaining the menu and offering recommendations. We decided to take advantage of the early bird specials. My husband chose the Hungarian Beef Goulash soup which was so think and creamy. I chose the salad which did not disappoint. Fantastic food and service. I messaged the business on Facebook about my many food intolerances/allergies and the owner-chef responded quickly with his phone number and told me to call him. He said it was not a problem. Most restaurants will just do something like plain grilled salmon and naked baked potato. Not Spargel. When we arrived the chef came out and told me each of his stations had come up with a dish for me and I could pick any or all of them. He explained each one and listed every ingredient. Appetizer was a mixed green salad with roasted potatoes, mushrooms, and bacon - big enough that it could have been my whole meal! Main dish was European sea bass poached in wine and smothered in a fresh tomato sauce with olives, served with quinoa cakes (I took half home because the portions are huge) and dessert was a chocolate buckwheat crepe with fresh berries. Everything was fantastic and the service can't be beat. They checked in several times to see how we were doing and that everything was safe for me. Background music was low enough that it wasn't difficult to hear each other. We will definitely be back. Menu items are clearly marked whether they're gluten free and it is a very extensive menu. read more

From the beginning the service was top notch. They had a large selection of German beers to choose from to accompany our meals. . Our friends had sauerbraten and said it was very good. But my husband and I had the beef rouladen and it was very disappointing. The rolled beef was huge and tough and hard to cut into. Had a very nice lunch here yesterday! Our waiter was great - unfortunately can't remember his name, but he was friendly and attentive. We received complimentary glasses of prosecco as it was our first time there. We ordered a gemischter salat and it was delicious. We were excited to see that on the menu, as many German restaurants in the U.S. don't offer that. My husband was excited to see spezi offered as a drink (he lived in Germany for a few years as a child) and enjoyed that. We went with the early bird special, which includes a soup or house salad, choice of several entrees, and dessert. I had the cream of potato soup and he got the cream of asparagus soup, which were both very tasty. The pretzel sticks and whipped honey butter were a very nice touch. I had sauerbraten as my entree. The red cabbage had really good flavor, as did the sauerbraten. My husband liked his jaeger schnitzel and spaetzle. The only minor complaint was that the schnitzel wasn't crisp enough. We took most of our entrees and our desserts to go as we were stuffed. We don't live locally but wish we did as we want to try more menu items! Looking forward to returning. read more

We went outside of Lake George for dinner because everyplace other than a pizzeria was disappointing, and we found this place on yelp, and it was a good choice overall. I got the spezi, which is coke and orange fanta mixed, and the wife got the apfel schorle, which is apple juice and sprite, because we had never heard or seen the combos before and both tasted good. They served us some honey butter with pretzel bread and just think a German restaurant does, but the Italian place Saluti in Lake George doesn't so go figure. The bread was good, and the butter honey was even better. I could've licked it off the plate and would've if people weren't around. For dinner, I ordered the brisket aka Baiersdorfer Rinderschmorbraten, which was tender and had a nice sauce and amazing potatoes, along with a refreshing side salad. The wife had the Heilbutt Im Kartoffelmantel aka halibut, which also tasted good with a nice crust. For dessert, we had the crème brulee, which tasted good and had a nice caramelized top. Overall, this place is worth the drive or trolley ride out of Lake George. read more

My three brothers and I ate dinner at Spargel on 8/22/24. The meals were nothing short of spectacular. One brother, who is a CIA graduate and a lifelong chef and chef educator, and who lived--and studied and taught cooking--in Germany for several years, said that the meal at Spargel was the best German food he had ever tasted outside of Germany. High praise indeed from a man who is a genius in his own right. And as if we needed further enticement, we learned that Christian Räth, the chef-owner of Spargel on 9, is the nephew of the beloved curmudgeon Hans, long-time chef-owner of Pumpernickel's in Bolton Landing! Sauerkraut is not your typical Americanized version so it can be surprising for some. Service is friendly and quick. They try to accommodate special requests (within reason). Incredible dining experience! Spargel on 9 is our new favorite restaurant and we will return when we come back on our annual pilgrimage to Lake George. Our party of 7 each got something different, and each dish was spectacular. Starting with Baked Asparagus and the Soup of the Day - Chantrelle Mushroom, we were floored immediately. I mean, out of this world delicious! The table was given soft, warm Bavarian pretzels w/whipped butter - save some pretzel if you want to sop up the delicious sauces (or soup) on some of these dishes. We had the Bavarian Sampler (for 2), Baked Cod Filet, Rindfleisch Gulash, Weiner Schnitzel, Venison Medallions, and Rabbit Loin "Spargel." Again, every single dish was outstanding. The service was excellent. Wish I could recall the name, but our waiter was expert level in describing the specials, the freshness of the ingredients, and any single item on the menu. Always lovely when the chef steps out of the kitchen to check on his customers, which gave us the chance to express our utmost satisfaction. And the greeter was happy to step outside with us to take a family photo. The decor was the weakest point, but barely worth mentioning, as the food and the service rendered that aspect irrelevant.
