My three brothers and I ate dinner at Spargel on 8/22/24. The meals were nothing short of spectacular. One brother, who is a CIA graduate and a lifelong chef and chef educator, and who lived--and studied and taught cooking--in Germany for several years, said that the meal at Spargel was the best German food he had ever tasted outside of Germany. High praise indeed from a man who is a genius in his own right. And as if we needed further enticement, we learned that Christian Räth, the chef-owner of Spargel on 9, is the nephew of the beloved curmudgeon Hans, long-time chef-owner of Pumpernickel's in Bolton Landing! What a breath of fresh air. The staff are amazingly trained. I lived in Germany for eight years and the menu could have been from any small town in Germany. Incredible dining experience! Spargel on 9 is our new favorite restaurant and we will return when we come back on our annual pilgrimage to Lake George. Our party of 7 each got something different, and each dish was spectacular. Starting with Baked Asparagus and the Soup of the Day - Chantrelle Mushroom, we were floored immediately. I mean, out of this world delicious! The table was given soft, warm Bavarian pretzels w/whipped butter - save some pretzel if you want to sop up the delicious sauces (or soup) on some of these dishes. We had the Bavarian Sampler (for 2), Baked Cod Filet, Rindfleisch Gulash, Weiner Schnitzel, Venison Medallions, and Rabbit Loin "Spargel." Again, every single dish was outstanding. The service was excellent. Wish I could recall the name, but our waiter was expert level in describing the specials, the freshness of the ingredients, and any single item on the menu. Always lovely when the chef steps out of the kitchen to check on his customers, which gave us the chance to express our utmost satisfaction. And the greeter was happy to step outside with us to take a family photo. The decor was the weakest point, but barely worth mentioning, as the food and the service rendered that aspect irrelevant. We went to Spargel for dinner last evening at 5:30. The front end became very busy and the staff were not very efficient at managing the inflow of patrons entering the restaurant. The restaurant became very busy and it appeared the staff struggled a bit to manage the tables. The back of the house, now that's a different story, every item we ordered was absolutely delicious. The potato pancakes, goulash, sour bratten and schnitzel, each one was as good as the other. All dishes were authentic, tasted great, and presented well. Outstanding food, you are doing yourself a disservice if you don't come here at least once. We paid around 80$ total for two meals, 1 amazing beer, 1 delicious soft drink/apple juice mix, and a tasty apple strudel for dessert. I would expect to pay higher depending on the meal or drink you choose. Honestly, the food alone is worth every penny, and the portions are huge. I can't tell you enough about how excellent our meals were. They were fresh, delicious, and bursting with flavor. I have never felt so well after eating such a big meal; the food is top tier quality. On top of this, the staff were super friendly and helpful. Kelly let me sample the beer before purchase, and she did a great job attending to us and helping multiple customers at once. The ambience is very nice, clean, and my wife and I enjoyed everything from the music to the placemats on the table. The chef came out to check on customers, which was awesome! Well night two at Spargel on Nine also went to the Thursday soft opening, ran into some snags. Most notably, the place was overbooked. The remedy for overbooking was offering free drinks, which was appreciated. However, did not resolve the hour to hour and a half wait for your meal. We ordered a herring filet appetizer and a beef consume with liver dumpling and German pancake strips - both amazing. I had the Sauerbraten and it was the best I have had since leaving the midwest. The portion was perfect and filling. My wife had the schweinebraten that in appearance alone was impressive. She stated it was the best pork she has ever experienced. What an unexpected delight! We stumbled upon Spargel when our intended dining choice was closed. We are glad that our plans were upended because our spur-of-the-moment German dinner was delicious, authentic, and reasonably priced. The homemade brats with potatoes and sauerkraut were full of flavor and the plate was giant with plenty for leftovers.
