Service was wonderful but the food was marginal at best. Our waitress was as disappointed as we were with the time it took to get our meals. Once they came my hamburger was good but, my lovely brides egg plater was cold. We sent it back and the eggs came back hot but runny. She worked through it and then the toast was also cold. I went on a busy Sunday morning which meant the waiters were running around and the kitchen was moving fast. Overall the service was really good, Hunter was friendly and attentive without being bothersome. The food was a little bit of a let down. I ordered eggs Benedict with regular bacon instead of Canadian bacon. The eggs were poached perfectly (maybe a little underdone but I like them that way) and the muffin was toasted nicely. The bacon was not very crispy to the point of almost being undercooked. The real problem was the hollandaise. It was a dark orange color and had clearly broken (curdled). This means they heated it too quickly, added the butter too quickly or it had been sitting around for hours (maybe all of these things). It also tasted of nothing, not lemon, not butter, not salt; Nothing! Overall I'd come here again but not order anything with hollandaise as that might be to sensitive a sauce for such a busy diner. read more

This place isn't a diner, at least not in the NJ sense of the word. When I think of a classic diner, I think of a greasy spoon in the manner of, say, the Jefferson Diner. Loud, obnoxious colors, food that probably isn't great for you but still tastes good... that sort of thing. You're not going to get that at the Sparta Classic Diner. This is more of a very informal restaurant than anything. My wife and I have gone here several times since they opened up, for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and have never had a bad meal. We love their omelette choices for breakfast, as well as the breakfast skillets. For lunch/dinner, you cant' go wrong with a burger or panini (Memphis Chicken is my personal favorite). Their soups are also excellent, and you can tell they are homemade rather than from a can. The only knock I have on this diner that stops it from getting 5 stars is that some of the wait staff is less than attentive, and that kills the atmosphere. The fact that they deliver is also clutch, especially on a cold/windy night where you want that burger, but don't want to leave your couch. read more

We love it here. Food is always consistently good. It's not your usual greasy diner, more upscale. My favorites are the chipotle club with mixed greens, quinoa egg bowl, all their salads, pancakes, etc. When we can't go there, we order in and enjoy it just as much. Food is good; not consistently great but OK. Service is the same; you either get a server who is awesome (like the waitress we had tonight) or you get someone who is fresh to the point of being rude. As far as the food, here is what I mean about it not being consistent. My family of four went there tonight for dinner. Everything that came out fried was inedibly overdone. We ordered the sampler and even the cheese inside the mozzarella sticks was hard. When our dinner came out, the vegetables, mashed potatoes and burgers were delicious and cooked perfectly. My husband's and daughter's burgers were picture perfect and they both raved about how good they were. My son's soup was fantastic (we even ordered one to go because he wanted some for lunch tomorrow.) However, his fried shrimp were so over cooked that he couldn't eat them. Which really was a shame because they weren't the normal shrimp you would expect at a diner. They were huge butterflied shrimp that I am sure, if cooked correctly, would have been awesome. My gyro was also overcooked and disappointing. I've never had an overcooked gyro before LOL. The meat was crispy; there was no feta cheese in the gyro (my favorite part of the gyro); there was so much onion that I could have shared my onions with the 2 tables beside us; and they burnt my pita and still served it to me like that. The pita was grilled to warm it up but left in the grill too long and the grill lines were black. The only fried food that came out properly cooked were my daughter's disco fries which were absolutely mouth watering (maybe because I was hungry since I couldn't eat my food ha ha.) in all seriousness though, her fries were fabulous...cheese, gravy and perfectly sautéed onions. So as I said, the food was either awesome or a bust. The service was fantastic tonight...I wish I knew our waitress' name so I could compliment her directly. I will say she had blonde hair with pink streaks in the back. We have been to this diner several times and we will definitely be back. Hopefully next time, whoever is working the fryer in the back will be paying closer attention. read more

When this diner first opened up we were so excited. We went there when it just opened and they were not prepared. We then decided to give it a second chance and it was much better. Then they started free delivery which was WONDERFUL! You can order from one place, make everyone in the family happy because you can order anything and you don't have to leave your house!!! Well.... EVERYTIME...when I say EVERYTIME...I mean EVERYTIME...it never fails that they either screw up the order or they forget something in the order. How can you sit down with your family when you only have half of your order or you can't start eating because they forgot a key part to what you have ordered and then your whole dinner is cold or one person in the family is left eating by themselves because everyone else has eaten. We have given them chance after change because they have so many options to order from. We spoke to the owner multiple times and he has either given us our money back or sent a free dessert or gave us a gift card. Last week when we ordered we finally had enough. I don't think we will ever order from here again. Its such a shame because they had a good thing going for them. they need to hire high school kids that actually give a crap because none of them do and it can really hurt them in the end. read more

Been here four times since it opened and have been pretty impressed. Service was pretty bad at first but I think they worked those kinks out, as the past two times we went in it was much better. The food is very good, though a little pricier than one would expect from a diner, but its also nicer than most diners I have been to. Also, the menu is a little more limited than a lot of diners, but offers a good mix. Portion sizes are good and I always leave full. While its not a traditional New Jersey diner IMO (large menu, inexpensive options, etc.), the food and service are pretty good. read more

I have never left a restaurant without eating before, especially after waiting an hour with 2 hungry children. The management at Sparta Classic Diner should be ashamed of themselves. We ordered all simple, quick prep food yet waited an hour while every table around us, including those who ordered 20 minutes after us got their food. I usually gauge a diner's worth based on how good their Ruben sandwiches are, theirs is called the Sparta Ruben, the Sparta chamber of commerce ought to march in there and demand that they take the Sparta name be taken off that sandwich ... Don't waste your time eating here unless you want sub-par pre-cooked food. I've tried to like the food at the Sparta Diner but every time I go there, I get over-cooked food. My first time was a cheese burger. I ordered it medium and it came out well done, and totally dried out, like a rock. It's like they cook a lot of them all at once and then save them under a heat lamp for the next customer. Nothing was freshly cooked. Then, today, we tried a cheese omelet for breakfast. We asked for it NOT to be browned or overcooked! It came rubbery, not fluffy, and YES, browned all around. Plus the breakfast sausage links were so, so dried out. Again, it was like they already cooked them earlier, and just heated it up in a microwave. They were like a rock and tasteless! That's what our breakfast tasted like anyway. I don't know what these other people experienced that rate the Sparta Diner 5 stars, but the Jefferson Diner has far, far better food and you get freshly cooked food exactly how you order it! I always get the chocolate chip pancakes when I go there and they're the perfect size portion and I cannot tell what's wrong but really good The only thing is on every point the chocolate chips aren't even on both sides or hi and low left and right but it still good. read more

The wait staff varies from mediocre to clueless and the food varies from average to poorly executed. Although the food was good, I wish I could say as much for the staff. This was my fourth visit here and most likely my last. First of all it is expensive, this is not typical diner food, more like gourmet diner food. I don't mind paying more, but the food and service should warrant the price. The restaurant was not very crowded, it was about 11 am , after the breakfast crowd but still before the lunch crowd. After we were waited about 10 min before anyone came to approach us, mind you 3 waitresses and the hostess were at the counter watching The Price is Right. After we ordered the waitress came back to tell me that they were out of bananas for my pancakes, so I switch to blueberries, then she came back to tell me they were out of turkey sausage and suggested chicken sausage, I agreed. The food came out pretty quick and was good, not great, but not bad at all. When we received the check I noticed a $5 for chicken sausage, when I told the waitress that sausage was listed as part of the meal ($8.50 ) she said that chicken sausage is more expensive. I said, but you suggested it in place of the turkey sausage, ( same price as regular sausage) and you never said it was more expensive. She became ambivalent, and did not seem to care. So I was charged for a complete side order of Chicken Sausage ( $5 for 2 links) at the absolute least , I could see paying for the difference between regular sausage and the premium sausage. I normally tip 25% or more , rarely do I go. Below 20% but in this case I felt burned , and no one cared, her mistake came out of her tip, she got 15% to the penny. As I mentioned earlier this is not my first visit, I was not surprised by the price, but so far every time we have ordered , they ran out of something. So after 4 visits, I have yet to have a meal from the menu, as described on the menu. So if you are in the Sparta area, don't go here unless you want to pay a lot. read more

Great food! Great service when we go there! BUT customers that order delivery beware of a delivery boy that adds money to the tip portion of the receipt. This is nothing against the restaurant. Make sure you get the customer copy of the receipt!!! The delivery boy that came to our house had us sign and we tipped him $10 cash tip. He told us that both copies were for him and our copy was in the bag. We thought it a little strange, but being trusting, we didn't think. When we checked our statement in the morning, there was an extra $10 charged to our account. When we called the diner they were very helpful and sent us a copy of the receipt. There was a bogus signature on the signature line. He forged the signature and added an extra $10 for himself! read more

They are absurdly overpriced and think they are a fine, white table cloth restaurant. For instance, a steak at a fine, white table cloth restaurant like St. Moritz is only $21.00 but it's $29.00 at Sparta diner. It's more expensive AND it's tough, grizzly inferior cut of meat. They also charge up to $30.00 for a lousy plate of pasta, which is more than an elegant Italian restaurant such as La Strada in Randolph charges (you can get better pasta down the street at Casa Mia for $12.00). And then they use cheap vegetable oil instead of olive oil. They also charge like $22.00 for crab cakes that use fake, plastic-like crab. I even asked the chef if it were fake and he said, "Of course." Well, for $22.00 not of course. I finally got sick of them and now go to Jefferson Diner, only 5 min away from Sparta Diner on Rt. 15. Jefferson has an amazing, large menu, pastries like you get in Little Italy NY (made on premises every morning), and the mgt treats you like you are special.
