Wanted to love this place and after giving it 3 chances, I still don't. First 2 pizzas were completely black on the bottom (friends had same experience with burnt pizzas) and didn't taste very good. After giving it a few months I went back again and the pizza was terribly tough and chewy making it hard to eat. The flavor was good but that toughness was something else. Maybe just bad luck but 3 times was enough for me. Service wasn't great either. Also very small pizzas for the price. This place is walking distance to me but I'd rather head out to little coyote or 4th horseman instead for some pie. read more

The reasons I won't be back: 1) They do not accept cash. 2) The Margherita pizza tasted very good but I added extra cheese, olives and mushrooms. First, we tried to order a half mushroom/half cheese pizza and were promptly told "We don't do that." Ok. Whatever. Put mushrooms on the whole thing. Ask around what people think about this place and you'll find some curiously polar opinions. Why you ask? It's just pizza right? What happened to that old, albeit cringy, adage "pizza is like sex, even when it's bad it's ok"? I'd love to give a local non-chain business a good review, or even the benefit of the doubt, but the reason for the polar opinions on this place is pretty clear. The premise and sales pitch of Speak Cheezy is that their unique sour dough crust is something special - and this is the problem. I'm really sorry to say, but this must be a mistake. See the attached photo of burnt pizza crust. And this isn't a one-off - this is just their style it seems after trying a few pizzas. The acrid taste of burnt sourdough hitting your tongue might be offset enough by what are objectively quality ingredients, above other pizzerias for sure, but the result then just fluctuates between Meh and Yuck. It's a double whammy at the upscale price they charge - hence the polar opinions. Most people aren't going to come on Yelp and give a mom'n'pop pizza place a bad review, so I'm guessing you get a bunch of reviews here that are swoon by the "idea" of sour dough crust, more than they are by the execution. Particularly after paying so much. And maybe they're just nice family and friends this early in the game. Either way, I just can't imagine the good press so far is from pizza aficionados or your average pizza eater. For the owners of this place - I think you're screwing up your dough/crust. If you've had LB's own Michael's pizza, you'll probably know their dough tends on the floppy side - also an atrocity I won't bother with, but not nearly as disappointing as burnt crust. It's a sad state for the star player in a dish to be. This is the star ingredient. Your pizza should shine without a single topping, instead it is pretty much just ashes. Now I'm not in the pizza business, but I'm no stranger to pizza dough or home made sourdough. So, just a passing along some armchair thoughts on your current practice - I think you need to adjust how much water you have in the dough given how hot your oven's bottom surface is. You seem to be relying on the color of the bubbles on the top of the crust to gauge the doneness of your pies while inadvertently burning the bottom of your crust. Of course - I'll leave it to you to decide if you think you're on to something that some people just won't understand, but honestly, I'd rather have pizza from 7/11 given the choice - and I don't like 7/11 pizza. read more

My philosophy has always been "pizza is like sex; even when it's bad, it's still pretty good". So, we ordered a Margherita to go. Brought it home, still fresh and warm. That's a win. I've officially found my new favorite pizza spot in SoCal. I've been on a hunt for quite some time since I'm a native New Yorker and have high expectations for pizza. Speak Cheezy definitely hit the mark when it comes to flavor, nice airy dough, and unique topping combinations. My favorite pizza so far is the Brooklyn Bee (go figure lol). It packs just the right amount of slight heat and delicious meat flavor. I had family over from out of town and the loved it as well. The hubby and I were in Long Beach enjoying a sunny day and decided we had to check out one of the highest rated restaurants in the city: Speak Cheesy. First impressions were a nice little eatery with a couple outdoor tables on the sidewalk with a dog water bowl near the door and bar seating against the inside wall with a new york pizzeria vibe. They had a convenient little parking lot in the back and we spotted a pepper plant growing, which we suspect goes into their house made hot honey and red pepper flakes. You can tell they take a lot of pride in their pizza craft just by talking to the different employees. Since this was our first visit, we went with the tried and true Pepperoni Pizza. It was delicious and everything we wanted in a pizza. Sourdough crust made in house, crispy cupping pepperoni, and a nice mix of mozzarella and parmesan cheeses that were perfectly complimented by their (you guessed it, house made!) dilly ranch and hot honey. Went for lunch with some coworkers. We each got a Sicilian slice to start and then went with a full pie to share. The staff was friendly, the shop was incredibly clean, and the food was delicious. I found this place online, and read so many amazing reviews I decided to give it a try. I ordered the Margherita and Vodka pies and was sadly disappointed. Both pizzas were bland...absolutely no flavor. There was such a thin layer of sauce unevenly spread on both pizzas, and some parts of the pizzas had no sauce at all, which may be why both were flavorless. Outrageously overpriced for what you get, and yes, prices are higher when you order through Uber Eats, yet $56 for two pizzas? I want to be fair to this establishment and order in-person to try their food freshly made, but the price you pay at the pizzeria is not far off from what you pay if you order delivery. To be fair, we did order our pizza through Uber Eats, which may have impacted the quality of the food; however, I've ordered frozen pizza from Keste Pizza, a pizzeria in New York that delivers nationwide, and that pizza was amazing. I doubt I will try this place again, although I am tempted to try it in-person just in case this was a rare mishap on their part. If I do try it again, you can expect an updated review. read more
