I came here the day after Christmas in a group of five. To seat us, the server added one chair at the end of a 4-top, so the space was a bit cramped when we got all of our food. We decided to order family style so everyone could try the different items on the menu. From the Appetizers, we got Braised Beef Stews & Beef Tendons (good though might be a bit heavy), Braised Pork Knuckle (good), Mala Shredded Chicken (healthy while still being tasty enough), and the Brined Tofu, which was excellent. The tofu was lightly crispy on the outside while being soft and comforting on the inside. Additionally, to get some greens, we ordered Iceberg Lettuce in House Sauce. This had a good crunch, but the sauce was too salty, so the best ones were the leaves at the top of the stack. We also ordered 2 Signature Hainan Chicken Over Rice. The chicken was good, though lacked the ginger sauce that normally accompanies it. This meant it lacked that extra oomph. The sides were fine, though I let other people in my group eat the eggroll because I didn't feel like eating it. Last, but not least, we ordered the Quarter sized Chiu Chow Brined Free Range Duck, which tasted good. I actually liked it a bit better than the chicken. We did end up having leftovers, so I packed the rest in one of my reusable Tupperware that I keep in my purse for these occasions. This was enough for a little more than one person's meal. Overall, I thought the food was good, though not the best. I liked that their single-use chopsticks were in a holder instead of laid out on the table, so it was easier for new to use my own to reduce waste (though of course, reusable chopsticks from the restaurant would've been ideal). As an aside, since it was wintertime and we were seated in the pathway of the door, it was extremely cold every time someone came in or out. Not sure if it was because the Chef was having a bad day or if the sale was on sale but everything was too salty to the point where the salt covered up the natural taste of the food. I've been to Special Hainan Chicken twice and left both times thinking the food is pretty mid. Their hainan chicken is decent but nothing special. I do like the oil rice that you can get with it, which is nice and flavorful. We got the half chicken with rice on the side this time, which I much prefer over a chicken rice plate, since I'm not a huge fan of all the tomatoes and pickled ginger that comes with the plate. Both times I've been here, I've gotten the laksa noodles. The first time, I got it with their special fish noodles, which I ended up not liking very much. The texture was kind of like a fish ball in noodle form, which is not the texture I like for my noodles. I remember thinking the broth was not bad the first time I got it, so I ordered it again this time with regular rice noodles. I enjoyed the rice noodles a lot more and they definitely give a lot. However, this time the broth was lacking in flavor. I didn't have the depth of laksa at other places, and mainly just tasted like coconut milk and a tiny bit of curry. For sides, we've gotten the beef tripe and the mala shredded chicken, which were both not my fave. I remember the mala shredded chicken in particular having a weird grainy texture. The tripe was alright but not amazing - a bit too salty and not as flavorful as what you can get at dim sum. I wouldn't order these two sides again. read more

I've gone to Special Hanian Chicken before and still occasionally do to get their braised duck as takeout. My first experience here wasn't impressionable, so it's not usually the first thing I opt for. I think it's a pretty solid Chinese noodle restaurant though. I came back again to take advantage of a recent coupon my parents handed to me - 15% off of $30 purchase (dine in only). We came around 5:45PM on a Friday and 1/3 of the tables were filled already. Between my partner and I, we shared 1) Brined Pork Intestines, 2) Salt & Pepper Chicken Cartilage. For myself, I opted to give their Signature Hainan Chicken over Rice another try (I don't remember liking it the first time I tried it when this restaurant first opened, but it was recommended to me by word of mouth again recently, so I wanted to give it another go). My partner got Braised Beef Brisket & Tendon Noodle Combo. Lastly, we of course couldn't come here without taking a half order of their Chiu Chow Brined Duck home! Order came really quickly. My Hainan Chicken looked pretty appetizing. It was presented neatly and portion size was pretty generous. The rice didn't look too oily and I appreciate that they put the scallion oil to the side so that you can mix in as much or little as you want. The chicken pieces were pretty tender, even the breast pieces. I would say it's pretty solid and even tops some of the other Hainan Chicken Rice around the area. They paired this with some cucumber and wood ear mushroom salad, which was refreshing. It also came with a comforting soup as well. Next I tried the Salt & Pepper Chicken Cartilage. Hmmm, I guess it's as pictured on the menu, but not quite what I expected (or what I'm normally given at other restaurants). It's more like popcorn chicken, but with cartilage inside the chicken pieces. It's pretty good, but I definitely wish it's more just cartilage and less chicken meat. Even the seasoning kind of reminded me of popcorn chicken, haha. Lastly, the Brined Pork Intestines was just not my favorite. It's cleaned well, but the smell of it was a little off-putting. My partner really enjoyed it though, so it's definitely a preference thing. Service wise, it felt kind of rush. This place is no wishy-washy, beating-around-the-bush. It's fast, quick to the point, and I think maybe peak time was coming so I felt like we were rushed out. This place is located in the Greenhouse plaza, on the same side as Great Clips and Happy Lemon, right when you enter the plaza on the McDonald's and Jack in the box side. There's a lot of parking around which is a huge plus. I'm ethnically Teochew so I was pretty excited to see a lot of items they have on the menu, but they're famous for their chicken so I had to try that. The duck looked good too so my cousin and I shared half half on the chicken and duck with rice dishes. We also got the tofu appetizer. Tofu: I really liked this dish. It was super crispy on the outside and super soft on the inside. The sauce that they marinated the tofu with was the right amount of flavor that wasn't overpowering or takes away from the crunchiness of the tofu skin. Duck or Hainan Chicken with rice: both of these dishes were good but nothing to brag about. If I'm craving duck or chicken, for the price, I would come here. It has a nice portion size that kept me full. They were both juicy but relied a little bit on the sauces that come with it for flavor. The chicken came with a side of crunchy peanuts which is one of my favorite sides. It was a pretty average experience. This time we ordered the fried shrimp ball and fried fish(Capelin) for appetizers, and we tried the combo beef noodle bowl, Laksa noodle, the signature Hainan chicken again, and the special Hainan chicken combo (with noodle instead of rice). The signature Hainan chicken was still good. However, my wife didn't like the noodles that came with the special combo. She said the broth was bland. We like the fried shrimp balls but wish they would give a salt and pepper mixture to enhance the taste. The fried capelin was OK. We probably wouldn't order that again. The combo beef noodle and laksa noodle were just OK. I guess we should just stick with the Hainan Chicken as that is the stand out dish here. Absolutely delicious! I got the laksa with the fish noodles and it was exquisite! I had it spicy and although it could've been a tiny bit spicier, it didn't take away from the experience!
