    Pineapple Bun w/ butter
    Lily T.

My family and I love Hong Kong cafes, so we were excited to give this place a try. We went around noon for lunch on a Friday. There are a lot of metered parking in the street, but they were all taken, so we parked at the metered parking lot a little down by Baskin Robbins. The restaurant is a good size, might seat about 30-40 people. It was pretty busy because most the tables were occupied or needed to be cleaned from the lunch rush. Service is great! Everyone was so nice and friendly. We were greeted and seated right we away. They have a lot of options on the menu, as do most HK cafes, but we stuck to our usual items and dishes that we saw were popular on yelp. Pineapple bun w/ butter- Meh, lacked in flavor even with the butter. It was also a bit pricey at $3.99. Garlic ribs- was not as pictured because it was not battered, but came out with batter. The batter was thick and fell off the meat, so in the end, it was just pork ribs. Flavor was just okay. Beef Chow fun- delicious! Would Come here just for it. Nice balance of noodles, beef, and veggies. Unlike other places that add too much onion ans bean sprouts to compensate for noodles. Baked Pork Chop over Spaghetti- you would think that all cafes would have this item down, but this was the only place I have eaten at that i do not like. We were able to tell it was not the usual creamy tomato sauce we are use to. It looked and smelled like sweet and sour pork chop, so we asked the waitress if it was a mistake, but apparently that is how they make it. Like i mentioned before, we have been to many HK cafes, and this was a first like this. We really really wanted to love this place, but unfortunately it was just okay. If it were not for the wonderful service and beef choe fun, I probably would have just given it 2 stars. I am open to coming back one more time be ause of the service in hopes of finding better dishes. Maybe we just did not order the right items.

The place was clean and I liked the decorations. Service left something to be desired - just a lot of waiting around (for the food, for the check, for the to-go boxes...) while there weren't many customers and the staff were just standing around chatting. I had the pork chop spaghetti. It was good but the shape of the dish made it really difficult to cut the pork. Others said that the Singapore noodles were good but the Clay Pot Rice didn't come with a sauce so it was kind of bland.

I have taken frequent abuse at many restaurants in the name of good food, but this place stands out for its sheer incompetence during a Thursday lunch rush. But, as my brother sagely noted, if the service is this bad and people are still here, the food must be amazing. Generally, that is the case, but we were both disappointed. We were both ordering takeout. For my brother's order, they charged him twice, then incorrectly filled the order, missing food items and both his drinks. When he asked for a refund of the double charge and for his drinks, they overcharged him for the drinks. Because they were out of the hot Hong Kong milk tea by the time they realized the mistake, they asked to substitute iced drinks, but then wanted to upcharge him for the ice. I ordered a char siu (barbecue pork) over rice lunch special and a beef chow fun lunch special, which you would think are among the easiest orders to fill at a Hong Kong-style cafe. The cashier put my order in as fried chicken over rice and beef and egg chow fun. Because one of them was not a lunch special item, I noticed that I had been overcharged and looked at the receipt and noticed that she had put in both items incorrectly. I had to wait five minutes for her to return to the register to remedy the mistake. Then I was informed that they were out of barbecue pork. She told the kitchen to change my beef and egg chow fun to beef chow fun instead, but did not refund me the difference in price. I okayed the change of barbecue pork to fried chicken over rice. It took us over 45 minutes to get our takeout. The food was fine, but I don't think it was worth the hassle of the restaurant experience. I'd recommend not going at lunch since it was so chaotic, and hope that if you try it, you have a much better experience than we did. Iced lemon tea was very good, and the one saving grace.

I had a really nice early dinner at Wonderful Cafe. This Hong Kong style cafe is in downtown San Leandro near Pelton Center. Clean interior, spacious, lots of tables, and interesting decor. There was a QR code on the table, but the young lady brought over a menu and asked what I wanted to drink. I asked for Iced Tea, and she suggested HK Lemon Tea. Oh my, that Lemon Tea was smooth and refreshing! The menu had a lot of interesting dishes. Won Ton w/ Beef Brisket in Claypot looked good. I added thin rice noodles. To try and make the dish ideal, I made a few requests.....chop the beef into smaller pieces, and add some fatty pieces of tendon. The result was a very good meal served in a claypot. My favorite vessel for hot food. I would of liked more noodles, but the soup was loaded with pieces of beef and some with fatty texture. The plump wonton dumplings were filled with tasty shrimp. Green onions and cilantro added a finishing touch to the presentation. I had no problem finishing all the broth. I must return and try another claypot dish. Wonderful Cafe is a nice restaurant with a casual and pleasant atmosphere. A must-try if you're in the area.

We're not usually in the San Leandro area, but our friend knew about this Hong Kong style cafe (Cha Chan Teng). It seems they have a bunch of locations in Asia too. Spacious, clean restaurant with good service. *** OUR PICKS *** STIR FRIED CAULIFLOWER WITH CURED MEATS ~ cauliflower still crisp and delicious mixed with cut up cured sausages and pork belly. Flavorful and prepared on point. 5/5 HAINAN CHICKEN RICE ~ tender and tasty chicken, but the rice was plain and not seasoned with ginger and scallions or chicken broth. I prefer it seasoned but the sauce was on the side and I guess you can put the ginger scallion sauce on the rice yourself. The sauce was less salty than most restaurants. And it also came with bok choy and peanuts. 4/5 BAKED PORK CHOP WITH RICE ~ this was our friend's ginormous dish. He enjoyed the pork chop and sweet tomato sauce. There was a good amount of cheese too! 5/5 BAKED PORK CHOP WITH SPAGHETTI ~ pretty much the same as the one with rice. The taste was spot on and a solid choice if you like HK style baked cheesy pork chops. I tried some of this and it was good. 5/5 HONG KONG STYLE FRENCH TOAST ~ A bit sweet but you can always ask for the sweetened condensed milk on the side. This was doused so it was definitely a dessert, even though it was given before our lunch entrees. It was delicious, just sweeter than I would like. The side of the toast was crispy too. 4.5/5 I'd like to try other items on the menu, so I would definitely come back the next time we're in this area. Every dish was a hit!

Came back for another meal on Saturday and while I'm upping my rating slightly overall, there are still some pros and cons. Pros: - Maybe a week or two after my first review, they started upgrading the interior and added cute new cane back chairs and stools, cute signs and posters, and got plates, bowls, and cups to match the signs they put up. They also added some new plant life. - The mapo tofu and Mongolian beef are delicious. The latter in particular was one of the best examples of this dish I've ever had, and I've ordered a lot of Mongolian beef in my life from a lot of different restaurants. Unlike most places, this wasn't mostly onions with a stingy amount of beef; it was the opposite, and the flavors were so, so good. I loved that they included bell pepper. And that smokiness from the beef in the ho fun was present in this dish. The mapo had a generous portion of ground pork throughout and plenty of numbing spice. - Great potstickers here. The wrapper was thick (not too thick), had a good chew, and was filled with juicy pork. Six to an order. Cons: - Service is a mixed bag. The waitress who greeted us was miserable and all but threw our menus at us when we sat at the table she gruffly pointed to, barking "HERE" as she slid them roughly to us. One of the rudest greetings I've ever encountered anywhere. But the woman who brought us our food and helped us the rest of the meal was a sweetheart and very kind. - The same issue persists with the wait staff dropping off your food and then never coming back around to check on you. Flagging someone down also continues to be a hassle. - The Hong Kong condensed milk toast was a huge disappointment, mostly because it tasted strongly of oil -- specifically, old oil -- more than anything else. It was the first thing I tasted in my first bite and all I could focus on for the few more bites I took before leaving it unfinished. The peanut butter filling was delicious and so was the condensed milk on top, but whatever was going on with the oil situation completely ruined this for me. This second visit was much stronger than the first overall, particularly where the food was concerned. But the service will likely never be very good here (if it wasn't ever at Le Soleil and still isn't here a couple months after opening, I have no hope for any improvement), and getting served an oil bomb dressed up as condensed milk toast just wasn't acceptable. But going in with tempered expectations for service and avoiding the toast are all easy things to do on our next visit.

I was looking for a place for a late night dinner (9:15pm) and found Wonderful Cafe. A small metered parking lot on the side and metered street parking. The interior is like a Chinatown decor and style. Two kiosks to order (takeout only?) from. Two separate single user men & women's restrooms. The service was friendly and patient. They spoke Cantonese and English mostly, but the owner spoke Mandarin. He realized we did not speak Mandarin so he spoke in English. He was very friendly and during the slow times, he went to visit with each customer's table and checked on how everything was. Steamed Pork Patty with Salted Fish Steamed Rice - served plain with blanched broccoli over steamed rice. Add your own soy sauce if needed. Beef Chow Fun (dry fried) - flavorful with whole stands of rice noodles and tender beef. Sweet & Sour Pork - a good crispy fry on the pork pieces and a tasty and authentic sauce. (I forgot to take a pic and we ate half and all the bell peppers before I realized I didn't take a pic) HK Milk Tea - a slightly different taste but still good. They have been in business for only a short time ~ 4+ months. We shall be back. Support your local business.

Service was good. All the servers were very nice. The eggplant clay pot was good. I was surprised that they have the Ovaltine Milk Lava French Toast which I don't think I have seen it elsewhere in the Bay Area. It definitely will taste a lot better if they don't reuse cooking oil which gives the toast a bitter aftertaste. Comparatively, the food was not as good as the HK cafes in Castro Valley and Oakland.

I've wanted to try Wonderful Cafe since it popped up as 'hot and new' on Yelp. It's always a hit or miss with Chinese restaurants for me, but I had to try at least once to form my own opinions about the place. The clay pot rice was what enticed me. I tried this on a Friday night, around 5:30 PM with my partner and brother. It was pretty early when we got there, so we got to pick whichever table we wanted to sit in. I like that the booth tables have partitions in-between some of the seats so there's some privacy and space if it gets packed. The lady who took our order was really friendly. She made some suggestions and said to call her back when we've looked over the menu. We shared: - Salt and Pepper Tofu: This was nicely flavored crispy tofu bites! All sides of the tofu pieces were crispy from frying, but had that soft tofu texture on the inside. I only wished they added a bit more toppings to it, or maybe some sort of simple dipping sauce to elevate it. - Clay Pot with Chicken & Mushrooms: Clay pots take ~15-20 min to prepare, but I'm looking forward to trying different toppings for their clay pots next time because this was well made! We let it sit for a bit after it was served in case it needed a bit of time to crust up on the bottom. And it turned out so well! We got a lot of crispy rice. But I think the best part was the mushrooms in there. It retained a lot of moisture and had nice earthy flavors to it. Chicken pieces were tender! - Fish Maw and Morel Mushroom Stewed Chicken: A nourishing, clear, soothing broth after a hard day's work. This was amazing. The chicken pieces in here were also very tender. Fish maw pieces and morel pieces were used very sparingly, but that's a bit expected I suppose with how expensive those ingredients can be. - Pickled Cabbage Fish Soup: Dang, this pot was unexpectedly huge. We asked for just a tad spicy since it can be adjusted, but that heat builds up quick, so I didn't have the soup. There were a lot of ingredients in there though. Plenty of soft, tender slices of fish, mustard greens, lotus roots, clear noodles, and mushrooms. A very shareable dish if your party likes spicy food. - Three-Delicacy Noodles: These noodles were good, but also mediocre. There's mild 'wok hey' to it and flavor was nice so it's still good, but ingredients varies based on what's available in the kitchen especially for protein. We asked specifically what is in this dish since we didn't know what 'Three-Delicacy' is and our waiter educated us a bit on this. - Bonus order: Pineapple bun. My partner wanted one after the waiter came out to let us know that the kitchen just came out with freshly baked buns! I only sampled the crust and it was delicious, just like how I remember it to be as a kid. Very nostalgic. This place is really cute. I think they're going for the HK 'Cha Chaan Teng' style and their decorations are on point with that. I also really loved their plates and wares as they're all themed. I think the service here was really nice. One of the ladies even greeted a customer with 'hello friend!' and most of the customers that came in later in our meal were of elderly population, which I think is a good sign, imo. They know where the good stuff are at. All in all, we really enjoyed our meal here and I'm glad something local like this is around!

I visited during the soft opening and decided to give this place another chance a few months later. Unfortunately, the service was just as disappointing. We ordered the $88 meal for 3-4 people along with a few extra dishes since there were 4 of us and we were all very hungry. We ordered honey walnut shrimp, pineapple bun with butter, salt and Pepper tofu, popcorn chicken, pea shoots with garlic, stir fried eel with chili peppers, broccoli beef, seafood fried rice and beef chow fun. The iced lemon tea was good, but some of the food fell short--the popcorn chicken had no seasoning, and the pea shoots tasted old. The biggest issue was the service. Even though the restaurant wasn't busy and there was an empty table next to us, no one offered to help when our table became overcrowded with dishes but they did for another table. When we asked for a to-go box to make space, the waitress helped newly arrived customers to tables first and returned with an obvious attitude, blaming the issue on being short-staffed. It's understandable if it was short staffed but there were 2 other waitresses and you don't have to take your anger out on the customers. She never checked on our table afterward, yet continued checking on others around us. We also noticed dishes being delivered to the wrong tables. Getting the check was equally frustrating. After several attempts to get her attention, we eventually had to pay at the front cashier ourselves. Lastly, I also saw them give a table ice water and after she put it down and they said they wanted hot tea she took the 2 cups of ice water and poured it back into the water pitcher. That same pitcher would then be used to pour into cups to serve the next customer that asks for ice water. Based on two visits and similar experiences mentioned in other reviews, I wouldn't recommend this restaurant due to the poor service.

Food is good but it takes a long time for it to be ready The pineapple bun is made in house so it takes even longer. You get it hot right from the oven with the crispy sweet tops. Noodles is fire with the aromatic of the wok. Season well The garlicky pork ribs make your mouth watery Service is slow and a bit disorganized.

Such a solid spot for comfort food, with nice and friendly service that makes the experience even better. The spam and egg fried rice hits just right, light and not overly salty, the Mongolian beef has a subtle kick and comes over crispy rice for great texture, and the pineapple bun with butter is warm and delicious. Definitely one of the better Hong Kong cafes in the area. I'll be back!

Went on a Saturday which I believe was the grand opening day. It was packed around 12:30, but luckily we got a seat by the window. Service was a bit slow but understandable as they work out the kinks. Tried the beef chow fun, eel and pork patty clay pot rice, pineapple bun, hot yuenyang milk tea and iced HK milk tea. The chow fun was too salty and didn't have enough wok hei but was pretty oily. The claypot rice didn't crisp on the bottom at all which was disappointing. They have two types of eel but it didn't have a description on the difference .. the more expensive one is the saucy eel you'll find at Japanese restaurants. I believe the other eel is the type with smaller individual eels which is what I wanted. It would've been nice if it was clarified on the menu. The drinks were just ok and a bit too sweet. They forgot to give me my iced HK milk tea, and they comped it for us at the end due to a mix up. The pineapple bun was overhyped as I've seen it mentioned a lot in reviews... it came out warm but wasn't anything special - the bread wasn't fluffy enough and was on the hard side. I'd try this place again but with lower expectations. They have a big menu so there's a lot to explore. Hopefully they improve on the quality and service.

To be honest, Fusion used to be terrible, and I used to absolutely hate coming here. Food was slow in coming, what came out was often cold, the dining room was loud, and service was impersonal, at best. On one visit, half the menu was unavailable, requested silverware was crooked, and numerous glasses, bowls, and plates were chipped or damaged. On another visit, I saw multiple families sneak out of the restaurant, walk to McDonald's across the plaza, and smuggle food back in to tide them over until their orders came. After a while, I wasn't alone in meeting the decree of, "come to Fusion on Saturday," with a groan. However, when HL Peninsula opened in Castro Valley and established itself as a threat to Fusion's business, it served as a wake-up call. Food immediately got better (from "below-average" to "know what to order and you'll be fine"), the speed of service improved, and food temperature became consistent and proper. It's not QUITE a "different restaurant" feel, and there are still some negatives. It's still loud and service could still be better (there have been times where chicken wings have taken over an hour to come out, which is a "should not occur"). However, at least I don't dread coming here anymore.

Their menu inside and their receipts spell their name as one word...Jingege. Why different on this…read morelisting? There's usually a pretty good line right by the register, so this place is pretty well known by the Asian locals. Shrimp Wonton Noodle Soup ($16/2*) First outing here I sat for lunch and tried this. Surprisingly disappointing seeing how busy and popular this place is. The wontons were okay, decent flavor with a strong sesame oil presence. But they weren't that plump and luxurious, just seemed like homemade/amateur versions. Which is fine, except given the nicer restaurant feel, I just expected something more elevated. The noodles were fine, super thin egg noodles that had a nice QQ. BUT their broth was so bland and unremarkable that it kinda ruined the whole experience. I couldn't even taste/detect the protein that made up the stock, just tasted like murky liquid to me. And zero condiments on the table, so I just ate the wontons and the plain tasting noodles cuz the broth couldn't offer anything to the noodles. Womp womp. And their bowl of choice is very weird to eat from. Super tall bowl that if you leave a spoon in there it will sink and be submerged for you to fish out...in piping hot liquid. If I would have reviewed this place just on this one visit, then it surely would have been a sub 3* rating. But I knew I couldn't leave my impression with that one lone visit. Roast Duck - Half ($20/4*) Came back for some take-out deli items and I was handsomely rewarded. Total 180 experience from the soup outing. Their ducks here are slightly more expensive than most others for the area. But it is still worth it imo. They cut it with good skill and even for a take-out box they present it nicely, with the shape of duck still somewhat intact. The skin is not crisp at all but it is very well rendered. Some pieces were not that salty at all but some other pieces are well seasoned, which I thought was strange. But overall a very solid roast duck is to be found here. There's also a big scoop of these tiny beans that are slightly sweet almost like baked beans just not as gloopy. But the bean texture is very al dente, almost crunchy, which I found very strange. Macao Roast Pork w/ Rice ($19/4.5*) This is crazy good...I'll even say special. Super seasoned pork belly is roasted til the skin gets crisp...like chicharon status, except it is just a very thin layer of crispness. So the balance between the sturdy crunch and juicy flavorful meat was practically perfect. It is definitely on the salty side, almost the same intenseness as eating Spam with white rice, but white rice offsets those salty components beautifully. And they garnish this massive plate with perfectly blanched gai lan (Chinese Broccoli) and some other pickled greens that add a nice sweet and tangy component. So between the decadent pork, white rice and diverse greens offerings just made this a complete one stop shop that could make a regular out of me. There's also a Share Tea next door so I've got a harmonious tandem going on here. Lucky Ducky Me yassss!

Service was ok, they give you a pad to order from, comes in English or Chinese. We ordered their specialty fish and pickled veggies, spicy and numbing but we all liked it, we opted for noodles to pair with it. Then we ordered sweet and sour spareribs, I've always had a tangy tastebud, then the ultimate Bbq pork which a special that I've yet to have anywhere else, it was the best tasting bbq pork. We ordered a dessert of sticky rice sticks that was intended to be crunchy but it wasn't so I'd skip that, not really worth it.

My group and I stopped by recently for morning dim sum, and we were incredibly impressed by the changes. The Atmosphere & Vibes The modern, newly remodeled interior looks fantastic. The space feels much brighter, cleaner, and more upscale than before, making it a wonderful environment for everything from a casual family breakfast to a larger celebratory gathering. They've managed to create a contemporary look while keeping the welcoming energy alive. The Food: A Noticeable Step Up While the new decor is great, the real star of the show is the improved flavor and quality of the dim sum. You can tell they've refined their recipes and perhaps brought in some fresh culinary talent. Here were the standouts from our meal: Baked BBQ Pork Buns (Cha Siu Bao): Absolute perfection. The tops had that ideal, sweet, crumbly crust, and the pork filling was savory, rich, and not overly gelatinous. Shrimp Dumplings (Har Gow): A true test of any dim sum kitchen. The skins were perfectly translucent and delicate without tearing, packed with plump, snappy shrimp that tasted incredibly fresh. Siu Mai: Flavorful, juicy, and well-seasoned. The texture was spot-on--not dense or heavy. Egg Tarts (Dan Tat): The puff pastry was beautifully laminated and flaky, holding a perfectly smooth, warm, and subtly sweet egg custard. Service & Value Despite the upgraded ambiance and food quality, the service remains efficient and attentive. Teas were kept hot and refilled promptly, and the dishes arrived fresh and steaming from the kitchen.

So what happened when my friend spoke one to the host? She laughed in her face. We got our food fast, but it was only decent. They also missed a couple items we marked on the menu. And the waiter who was wearing something different from the rest was VERY dismissive when they ran out of a certain item and when we tried to ask some questions. Overall it was a really bad experience for me and my friends which is crazy because they weren't always so bad!

Better ingredients, better cooking ways. That all said: Compared to the rest of the Chinese food competition in the area, the meat portions are generous, meatier, bigger than others, some put too many vegetables to compensate for the lack of meat or small meat portions, the new Hong Kong gives you meatier, generous portions with just enough vegetables to enjoy the food. They used to have or do deep fried whole fish but they discontinued that one. The dining room area seemed small but spacious and clean. You scan the menu via your phone and order from there. If you call to order and no one answers and a Vmail comes in, just hang up and try again later, they are sometimes busy in the kitchen. Staff are accommodating. Will patronize and come back!

It was so nice to eat locally and have a good meal with great parking. They are in the Safeway shopping center and share a lot with them. The place is clean and bright, very inviting. Most of the party arrived before us so we were able to easily find our table. We were set next to the fish take, by the kitchen. It was a good arrangement. We had 2 tables with identical entrees. We ordered: Green Beans, Salt and pepper chicken wings, shrimp fried rice (Everyone's least favorite dish), Chow Fun, duck, and probably some other dishes. The green beans were the best dish. The chicken wings were good, but not as flavorful as people hoped, they probably won't be ordered again. The fired rice was a big disappointed, it had shrimp in it, but it lacked flavor. We didn't get a soup. We also had a steamed fish which was really good, coming from a not big fish fan. It was seasoned with soy sauce and was a big hit with the table. Even my picky nephew ate some. We also had calamari, it wasn't a big hit, we didn't even take it home with the leftovers. We all got tea and we asked for ice water for everyone which was drank along with the tea. If you request it they will bring out forks, my brother in law made the request. I was impressed even the kids used chopsticks. I definitely reccomend this restaurant. Especially for large groups. It's set up for banquets. I can't comment on the bathroom, because we didn't use it.

I guess this was when it started to get less busy. Within an hour, half the diners were already gone. Service was a little slow. They did not have enough servers working all the tables. Our server barely came back to check in on us. The only thing we needed were extra tea refills. The food on the other hand came out in a timely manner and were steaming hot when they got to our table. We ordered about a dozen dishes and they were all delicious. My favorite dish was the Golden Tofu Cube with Salted Egg. It was a little salty and the inside was soft while the outside was crispy. I also liked the Stir Fried XO Sauce Rice Rolls. It was flavorful, tender and I thought they used the right amount of sauce for my liking. The dining area was quite big. It looked like they had just hosted a party the night before since their speakers equipment were still out. This place did have a parking lot which might look big but it could easily fill up during their busy hours. I was lucky to find an open spot when I got here.

BAKED BBQ PORK BUN 6/5 Was the star of the table that day! Packed lots of flavor sweet, salty and crunchy on the outside. SERVICE 3/5 It was a hit and miss... I wish they would understood me more. I was asking this worker that looked like a manager what food did this server lady brought out to the table next to us that looked good and he did not understand me. When you get your check they automatically add 15% tip to your bill. I wonder if they do this to none Chinese looking patrons. Let me know. Still good place to eat! This place was a live and thriving. Plenty of big tables with turntable to move food around instead of passing food around.
