We came back to this place because we were craving Hainanese Chicken Rice and Laksa Noodle Soup. These were the three dishes we ordered: First was the K1 Special Laksa Fish Noodle Soup, $16.50, or 招牌叻沙魚綫面 (叻沙湯). I had tried this dish before and enjoyed it, but I didn't remember the broth being so light. I thought the dish would've benefited from a thicker and creamier broth. I think adding some coconut cream to increase the creaminess would've made it better, imho. That said, the real highlight of this dish was still the fish noodles. They were these long, tube shaped pieces of fish cake that acted like noodles, and they were delicious and felt high in protein. The bowl also came with a good amount of toppings. I especially loved their beef balls because they were so firm and almost crunchy when I bit into them. There was also shrimp, Napa Cabbage, and other toppings that made the bowl feel hearty. My mom got the K8 Slice Beef Laksa Fish Noodle Soup, $16.95, or 肥牛叻沙魚綫面 (叻沙湯). This was very similar to the K1, but the main difference was that it came with thinly sliced beef on top. The beef looked really good, and honestly, I kind of wished I had ordered this one because I like to try something new. It also came with the same delicious fish noodles, so this is probably what I'll try next time. The last dish was the K9 Signature Hainan Chicken Over Rice, $15.50, or 招牌海南鷄飯. My only gripe with this dish was the same as last time. The chicken was chopped right through the middle of the bone, so there were little bone shards mixed in with the meat, which I hate. I really didn't enjoy having to worry about biting into one while eating. Aside from that though, I thought the presentation was much better this time around. My friends and I stopped by Yummy Hainan Chicken for dinner on a Friday evening and the restaurant was completely empty at 5:00 p.m. Between the four of us, we ended up sharing a half Hainan chicken, half roasted duck and two bowls of their chicken rice. Overall, I really enjoyed the food here. The chicken rice was aromatic, flavorful and had a really nice texture to it. The chicken is tender and the thin outer skin has a gelatinous quality to it like a well-prepared Hainanese chicken. Honestly I had no notes on this dish. Hard to improve. I generally avoid roast duck at restaurants because of how fatty it is, but the one here was surprisingly good. While there were a few pieces with a thick section of fat between the skin and the meat, the majority of the pieces had a nice balance. There's a sweet tangy sauce that's included on the side with the duck that I really enjoyed as well. If you're looking for lean duck, you'll probably want to stick with the Chiu Chow marinated duck. I was in the area and decided to give Yummy Hainan Chicken a try. I ordered the K9 signature Hainan chicken over rice. I placed the order over the phone and asked for it without the skin since I'm not a fan of slimy chicken skin unless it's crispy. A few minutes later they called back to ask if I wanted bone in or boneless. I told them bone in was fine, I just didn't want the skin. When I got home and ate it, the food was okay overall. The chicken was cold, not like it had been sitting out, but more like it had just come out of the refrigerator. The peanuts were actually a nice touch and added good flavor and texture. This is reviewing for my dine in experience and the take out I got today. - I got the K7 braised beef brisket noodle soup The portion of the beef brisket was so little to my amusement. DON'T recommend getting this due to the portion size. Taste was just ok. Carrots were a bit hard. And take out - curry beef brisket (size of the curry has shrink to half the size) I guess I will stick to Hainan chicken rice for dine in and take out but don't try anything else. The only other side I would recommend is the tofu. However the quality control is just alright. The chef put the ugliest small piece on the center bottom so we wouldn't see that it's smaller than the rest of the pieces. Yummy Hainan Chicken operates a humble storefront that's typically full during peak lunch hours but with their capacity of about 10-15 small parties, it's a high churn place so with a wait time of 15-30 minutes, a spot will eventually open up. They have a handwritten waitlist that they'll go through as you and your party wait outside (there's a super small waiting area for about 3 people); they'll come out to call your name. Don't fret though, as you wait, peruse the menu and plan out your feast. Once you get seated, the staff will had out menus and waters/teas to start. Their offerings are quite inclusive of a variety of signature Chinese specialties. We tried to get a few things to give them a good shake and were quite impressed with the value and quality. Hainan Chicken (served by the half so if you get a whole one, you'll get two dishes) - the namesake of this establishment gets the full score as its taste and presentation are as authentic as you'd expect. Served with the ginger sauce and salted roasted peanuts, these meaty pieces of poached chicken are succulent and flavorful with each bite yet. The pieces were not fatty at all and were quite tender. You can order it to go with rice but since we did family style, we just got the whole chicken to share (with leftovers of course). Marinated Platter - this protein dense dish is piled with marinated fried tofu, honeycomb tripe, duck, and boiled eggs. This is perfect to share as a starter that will get your tastebuds popping with umami. Laksa Noodles - as newbies to this, we ordered the special "K1" signature laksa noodle soup and were pleasantly surprised that the noodles were not your wheat variety but made of the same protein and texture of fish cakes. Very flavorful broth packed with meatballs, shrimp, tofu, quail eggs, and veggies. Definitely a good one for cold days! We did end up sharing but one slurp and you may want this one all to yourself! Cucumber Salad - not much to be said on this dish. It was rather uninspired as it lacked tofu skin and wood ear. It definitely had a good share of smashed cucumbers and was tasty but the variety was extremely subpar. Fried Salt and Pepper Porkchop - these tender and crispy chops were delicious and considered a chef special, making it a bit more affordable compared to other dishes. Great value and tasted great even after reheating with an oven. The staff were friendly and spoke English, Cantonese and Mandarin giving language learners an opportunity to practice. They were quick to greet us and bring the food out. The prices were reasonable given the amount and quality. If eating as a party, family style, each person should get a good taste without spending too much and still have some to take home for a second meal. Overall, Yummy Hainan Chicken does a great job with their signature dish but also does fairly well with other specialties and staples. Was in the area visiting a friend and looking for something interesting to eat. I saw pictures of this Hainan chicken with yellow skin I haven't seen before and decided to come. It's located in the 99 Ranch plaza on the left side of the supermarket. There is plenty of parking. Restaurant itself is on the smaller side and it was getting full at lunch even though it was a weekday so I know it's a popular spot. Service is like a normal Chinese restaurant where it could be perceived as rude but it's just their style. They took my order immediately and when I tried standing so there would be more open tables they insisted I stay seated. Hainan Chicken Rice: Non-traditional and unique. No, I've often wondered whether or not it would be unreasonable to wrap spaghetti in a flour tortilla. Spaghetti Burrito, if you will. Makes spaghetti hand holdable. Otherwise it would be next to impossible to eat spaghetti while driving. But I digress... We looked at the menu for Yummy Hainan Chicken and they had dishes that we enjoy. So, we stopped by and placed an order and paid for it. When the order was ready, we got back into the van and drove to a nearby park. I got water for the dog, and we sat at a picnic table in the shade. My wife pulled the dishes out of the bag and immediately, I saw that we had a problem. There was a small box of rice. We didn't order any rice. There was a rice plate. No, we did not order a rice plate. There were two small containers of broth which we also had not ordered. I looked at the receipt that was attached to the outside of the bag and it was Order #13, worth about $35. I asked my wife for our receipt, and it was Order #14, worth about $51. Arrrggghhh! We packed the food back up without opening any of the dishes. We put the dog back into the van and drove back to the restaurant. As soon as my wife walked in the door, the server rushed up to her and apologized for giving her the wrong order. Then she told my wife to keep the incorrect order to enjoy and meanwhile, the kitchen would refire our original order. That was above and beyond. Service the old-fashioned way. We goofed, we're sorry. Let us make it up to you. We ended up with $86 worth of food for only $51. Yes, they made a mistake. Yes, it was an inconvenience because we had to return and then wait. But the fact that they recognized and admitted to the mistake as soon as my wife walked in the door is impressive. The fact that they told us to keep the incorrect order tells us that they understand that once food goes out the door, if it's returned, they must throw it out for food safety reasons. However, by simply telling us to keep it built up tremendous goodwill that can't be bought. Before we even got back to the park, we had already decided that the yelp rating would be a 5* just for the customer service. Then, we ate the food. We tried a little bit of everything that we got and it was all DELICIOUS! We enjoyed everything that we got and would happily order it again. Of course, we'd also have to try other flavors too. We got: Curry Beef Brisket & Beef Tendon - 5 - Not too much eat. Nice tender brisket and tendon. This dish was great over rice. Hainan Chicken Noodle Soup - 5 - This dish is probably better in house than to go. Like all the better restaurants, everything came in three separate containers. Soup in a large bowl. Noodles in a smaller plastic container. Hainan Chicken with Green Onion/Ginger Sauce and Peanuts on the side. The problem was with the noodles. Once cooked, they're dropped into the container where they clump together. It took a bit of work to unclump them in the soup. One solution would be to leave some water in with the noodles but then they would absorb that water and that changes the texture. The real solution would be to eat them in restaurant to enjoy the dish as it should be enjoyed. Broth - 5 - A mild flavored broth served with two of the dishes ordered. Seafood Laksa Ramen - 5 - Super flavorful soup with Prawns, Mussels, Cuttlefish Balls, Calamari and Fried Tofu. Another yelper wrote that the noodles are made from fish paste. We couldn't really tell. They were very soft and didn't have much of a bite or flavor, however, as a complete dish, it all came together well. This dish was served in two containers, soup and noodles. These noodles did not clump together. Knife Cut Noodles with Minced Meat - 5 - While this was not a dish that we would have ordered on our own, it is a dish that we will order again. For whatever reason, we have a fascination with handmade noodle because of the flavors and textures. There was just a hint of heat that we think may have come from spicy fermented tofu, but please don't quote us on that. Braised Beef Brisket and Beef Tendon over Rice Plate - Order this to eat in house but not to go. It's served in a plastic three-compartment plate with a lid. Because the rice and the Brisket/Tendon are served hot, the Smashed Cucumber, Wood Ear and Bean Curd Salad gets "cooked". It would tastes much better cold or at room temperature. The restaurant is small and clean. The people friendly and service, relatively quick. Parking is okay if you don't mind walking across a parking lot. The Signature Hainan Chicken Over Rice ($15.50) was truly yummy! This dish was the best of the three that we ordered. It didn't seem to give you a whole lot to eat, but the chicken was very "slick" and oily. The flavor was excellent, and the ginger scallion sauce tasted perfect. Be careful! It does have little pieces of bone fragments from the way the chicken was cut. It comes with a little bit of yellow rice, which was very lightly seasoned. The appetizer on the side contained cucumbers, tofu, skin, and little bits of wood ear fungus. It was lightly salted. The soup was pretty good too, but had a little bit of seasoning that I couldn't identify, and pieces of seaweed in it. The Braised Beef Brisket and Beef Tendon Over Rice ($15.95) was OK, flavor was good, but the tendon seemed a little bit chewy. This dish came with regular rice and the appetizer. DH really loved the Chiu Chow Marinated Duck Over Rice ($15.50), but that's his thing. I thought it was OK, the duck didn't have much flavor, but the sweet garlic sauce really helped to add more. Portion size did not seem very large on this one either. We tried a vegetable soup, which was really good. It was listed as a vegetable in broth, Choy Sum In Supreme Broth ($10.95), so it wasn't exactly what we were expecting. I think it was a chicken broth thickened with cornstarch. Quick service, delicious food, no frills dining. There was a TV playing quietly with an Asian drama, between that and the family with two toddlers, we were entertained. We had half Hainan chicken with the chicken flavor rice, the romaine lettuce with garlic sauce, the deep fried peanuts appetizer, the mala shredded chicken appetizer, Everything was except the lettuce dish which had been stir fried. I would have the peanuts were cold, unsalted, and I'm not even sure if they were fried. I've had hainan chicken at a few different establishments now and they all have come with peanuts. These weren't salted and didn't seem fried. We ended up taking our peanuts home and will most likely toast them in a pan and salt them. I really enjoyed the lettuce, so simple but the crunchy garlic bits really worked for me. The hainan chicken was yummy and had just the right amount of seasoning. The mala shredded chicken was also served cold, I wasn't expecting this but it was fine, the taste was good and they told us it was spicy when they dropped it off at our table. We both ordered the Hainan chicken plate (K9) and the server mentioned that this chicken is served cold. Different but okay, we'll give it a try. She brought us little bowls of broth with seaweed. It was clean tasting and a nice way to begin our meal. Our main dishes came next which consisted of a scoop of flavored rice, a cucumber/wood ear mushroom salad, peanuts and the chicken was chopped into smaller pieces. On top of the chicken was a dollop of a scallion/ginger sauce. The rice and cucumber salad were very good. The chicken is flavored but the wing pieces I received had skin and bones and very little meat. My husband's piece of chicken was larger but he found it to be fatty and I think this is the typical slightly jelly-like substance that develops from being refrigerated. So please be aware that if you've never had Hainan chicken before, the chicken does come cold with skin and bones intact and the chicken is chopped like with a cleaver. The rice was our favorite. Came back to give this place a try. I think the day we originally tried this place the chef may have been a bit heavy handed with the salt but this time was perfection. Best flavored and ample portions for Hainan Chicken. Great as takeout for home or as a lunch option if you bring lunch to work. The rice is classically flavored. The ginger scallion dipping sauce for the chicken is on point. Service is efficient. Simple ambiance in restaurant. No idea about the other dishes. This is a definite "local go to" for Hainan chicken! read more

Came here because we are a fan of the Millbrae Special Hainan Chicken and thought (mistakenly) they were the part of the same chain. They're not, but I like Yummy Hainan even more because of #1 on their menu -- the fish laksa noodle soup. The name of the dish - fish laksa noodle soup - is misleading. We were fully expecting slices of fish with rice noodles. Instead, we got soft fish cake molded into noodles. The fish cake tasted fresh and homemade and was much lighter than rice noodles. The laksa broth was complex and so good we finished every drop. We could tell it was well made hours later because we didn't feel the MSG hangover. The soup was also chock full of what tasted like homemade meatballs, slices of char siu, shrimp, quail eggs, and mushrooms. It was excellent. Right next to Ranch 99 in Pleasanton, the restaurant was full even on a Sunday evening. Very reasonable prices and clean. Friendly service. Cantonese-speaking ftw. read more

I kept thinking, 'This is really good!' I came in by myself and ordered the Hainan Chicken, of course. I'm not an expert, I just know I like Hainan Chicken :) First of all, what a nice looking dish! I've never had a salad with woodear mushrooms and cucumbers so that was a delicious surprise. The rice and the ginger scallion sauce were both solid. The chicken - sooo tender, juicy, flavorful. The chicken skin- wonderful texture. (The chicken is served in chopped slices so just be careful eating around the chicken bone.) It's a nice little restaurant with very friendly service. Tons of parking but it can be busy in the parking lot since it's next to 99 Ranch. Unfortunately, I live about 45 minutes away, so I'll have to come by whenever I'm in town. read more

Despite "chicken" being in the restaurant name, we like to come here for the duck. A half duck and veggies with meatballs in soup is the right amount for two people and a toddler to share. What I like about the duck is that it's lighter than the roast duck you get at the market, less fatty, and topped with a savory sauce (reminds me of how chicken rice is served in Malaysia/Singapore, but it's duck). The drinks are the same as you would order at a Cantonese cafe, but cheaper. We like the hot honey lemon drink. As someone else noted, the Hainan chicken is served differently than the Malaysian/Singaporean style. That is partially why we gravitate towards the duck, although trying variations of the same dish does allow us to appreciate the diaspora of the region. read more

Food was decent and service started off attentive, but the experience ended on a bad note. I signed the receipt with no tip(gave back to worker at register) but left cash tip on table. Later the staff came over as we were packing leftovers and pointed it out in this quiet restaurant with many other customers. It felt embarrassing and unnecessary. I understand that tipping is important, but situations like this should not happen. It unfortunately took away from what was otherwise a pleasant visit. Will not return after that experience. If you do end up reading this, yes I ended up tipping less than what I had planned. Please do better. read more

Had high expectations for Hainan chicken at a hainan chicken restaurant. First off, service was excellent. Servers were nice and attentive. We ordered: Hainan chicken: the test for any chicken cooked to perfection is probably in the outcome of the white meat. Sad to say, it was dry and bit chewy. Not tender nor flavorful (or salted enough). The skin was nice and bouncy though. Side soup: the chicken came with a side of soup. I was hoping it would be chicken broth from the chicken or a derivative of chicken. It wasn't. It was watered down broth with lots of white pepper. Fried fish: very crispy, good portion. Excellent Fried chicken cartilage: also be try crispy and good. Maybe I had that one chicken was a tad bit overcooked. I was hoping for a better experience. read more

Had an amazing meal here! Went with some friends on a Friday night, and it was almost fully packed, so keep that in mind. On to the food! I had to get the Hainan Chicken, and it was SO GOOD! So tender, so flavorful! Man, it was so delicious, it really tasted on par with something you'd get in Asia! As far as sides go, I got the tripe, and it was yummy as well! I'm glad the friends I went with love tripe as well, because I know it's a bit of an acquired taste and texture. Service was good, and it was pretty quick as well. Hainan chicken over rice is good. Noodles soup with duck is ok, I rather have ho fun, the duck meat is good though. Laksa fish noodle is okay, the broth lacks of coconut milk and I rather have Ho fun instead of fish noodles. read more
