Ham, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich (with housemade pesto)

It's hard to reiterate how absolutely stellar this place is, but I'll try. Although I tend to be more of an explorer than a repeater when it comes to vacation food, Spiga was too good to visit only once. We came back for coffee and pastries every morning. Though everything was delicious, the star for me is the Almond pastry. It is as pillowy soft as a cumulous cloud and perfectly sweet. One of these alone is basically worth the flight ticket. Just absolutely fantastic and a true cannot miss mouth experience.

I made sure to stop at this famous spot before leaving San Juan, and I'm so glad I did! It's a tiny space with limited seating, and people waiting in line stand pretty close to those who are eating--but it's all part of the charm. The smell inside is incredible, and the place is clearly popular with both locals and tourists. The waitress was so sweet and welcoming. We ordered from the chalkboard menu without realizing there are even more options available if you scan the QR code--wish I had tried the egg sandwich! That said, I was still really happy with everything we ordered. We had the guava butter and almond pastry, the quiche, and coffee. Everything was outstanding. I can't wait to come back for more pastries next time I'm in town!

I inhaled the cinnamon roll with orange zest with zero inhibition, and proceeded to stare at the rest during my entire meal in order to plot the next victim (opted for chocolate chip walnut cookies to go :). Service is super friendly. There's only a handful of tables inside, and two outside, but turnover is fairly quick, and the staff keeps track of who is waiting. We had two breakfast sandwiches - mine with homemade pesto, thin slices of ham and fried eggs, and my partner had the ham, brie and homemade fig jam with added eggs. The sourdough bread was perfectly toasted and delicious. Washed down with the really tasty mocha (made with ground chocolate that sinks to the bottom and gives you that last jolt of delight at the end of the cup), it was a perfect start to the day. Highly recommend!

I was a bit disappointed with the food. I ordered their orange cinnamon roll and didn't taste any orange. I was intrigued but the lame but it was a let down. Their sandwich (I think it's Brie) is really gross, don't order it. But the items my friends got looked great and they didn't complain.

Absolutely delicious breakfast sandwich and the perfect stop to begin our day in Old San Juan. Can't wait to return. Service was great and the place was charming.

The buns and coffee here were great. I'm a sucker for fresh baked goods lol. Their cookies were also delicious. What kept this place from getting 5 stars was the minimal seating, and how ordering is gone about. The owner is really nice though.

The best breakfast sandwich I ever ate was here. I took a picture of it. It's the one below captioned, "The perfect breakfast sandwich." And it was perfect.

The guava bread is my absolute favorite! The cookies are also really good! I love the fresh coffee. The ladies working are amazing. The decor gives old San Juan coffee shop perfectly!

Cute little cafe! Not much sitting space, but that is the Italian way, right? I grabbed a cappuccino for the road. Staff was nice and fast. The barista pulled a perfect shot. Very great way to kick off a day of walking tours.

Yowza! THAT was a good breakfast sandwich. And the egg scramble my wife has was huge (I had to help her out, which tired me out enough that I only ate two pastries - get the guava coconut and smile). Came back another day because, well it's fantastic. Everyone knows it, too: cross your fingers that your timing will get you a table. The staff are pros and are friendlier than I'd expect. This is a remarkable little place.

AMBIANCE Parking: Old San Juan rules--come early or be ready to walk. Seating: Multiple seating areas for individuals and small groups but it's also a cafe too so there is seating in the back too. Vibes: Clean, modern café with a mix of locals and tourists. You can tell people come here for the coffee, not just to pass through. It leans more intentional and coffee-focused rather than just aesthetic--which I appreciated. FOOD / DRINKS Coquito Frap (Recommend) When in Puerto Rico, Coquito. Creamy, coconut-forward, and lightly spiced--like a frozen coquito with a coffee twist. Sweet, smooth, and definitely more of a dessert drink than a regular latte. We loved it so much we actually went twice during our trip - and even made a final stop before heading to the airport to go home. On our first visit, Hector (the roaster) happened to be there, which made the experience feel even more special. The staff overall were all so kind and attentive. The coffee is absolutely excellent - velvety smooth, rich, and delicious. I could easily drink more than one cup. I had a latte, and my husband had a macchiato, and both were great. They have a cute little outdoor atrium seating area, but we preferred indoors where all the comfy pillow seating was. Just a note - they don't offer decaf - but for regular coffee drinkers, it's a must-visit. Such a gem in Old San Juan!

I started with a hot latte. It was delicious. Creamy milk and nice coffee flavor. For breakfast, I chose the traditional French toast which came with fruit and a huge dollop of whipped cream and maple syrup on the side. I scooted the whipped cream to the side but enjoyed the cinnamon flavored egg bread with fresh fruit. We asked our server about interesting places to visit while we walked around San Juan. We couldn't choose amongst all the empty tables, because staff were rude and dismissive. AC wasn't working, so we felt the humidity and heat. Ceiling fans weren't cutting it. We got the $25 wagyu burger and $20 Mallorca chicken sandwich, both of which were dry, bland, and underwhelming at best. The burger patty lacked flavor and there was no sauce or any accompaniments besides a very sad, wilted, thin slice of tomato and lettuce leaf. Pretty bad burger! The chicken sandwich was so heavily fried, we almost broke our teeth against the chicken. Insanely salty--we couldn't take more than a few bites. Felt so parched for the rest of the day. Fries were the best part of the meal--so salty and thin.

Honestly, some of my favorite photos came from just walking around the neighborhood. Unfortunately, the drinks didn't quite live up to the aesthetic. The coffee was pretty bland and tasted watered down. I also ordered a matcha, and it definitely wasn't what I expected. The color alone didn't resemble a traditional matcha, and the flavor was lacking. Overall, I'd come back for the ambiance, décor, and photo opportunities, but I hope the drinks improve because the café itself has so much potential.

We made a reservation in the morning when we docked in San Juan since I read they stay busy. Atmosphere: Upon arrival, there was a short wait for 2 of us. The eatery has inside seating however with 5 full length doors to the outside it feels like an open air kinda eatery. There's a large countertop eating bar in the middle of the restaurant & an additional eating area in the back, but overall it's a pretty small dining spot. Food: Tried to make a few alterations to my dish such as scramble the omlette instead of the traditional fold it & add an over easy egg to the sandwich. They said the kitchen is very particular about the presentation of the food so no "scrambled" omelette & the over easy egg had to be on the side in case the yolk popped on the sandwich before making it to the table. Ok! Veggie omlette was really flavorful. Full of diced veggies. The avocado I added was such a nice consistency. Yes it was ripe but I think it's a different variety of avocado than we tend to get in mainland US. With the omelette plate, I substituted french toast ($6 up charge) for the regular toast. The french toast was soft & fluffy. Very good. The dish also came with a generous portion of hand cut French fries. It would have been better if they were hot but they were still good. My husband got the Cuban sandwich & added an over easy egg & said the sweet plantain on the sandwich was unexpected & really made it quite good. Pricing: Price point may be considered moderate to moderately higher, but you're on holiday and the food & ambiance are good. Breakfast was $78 before tip for 2 entrees (with add ons), 2 specialty coffees, 1 juice & $4 for unlimited filtered water. All in all, it was a heck of a lot of food, tasty, and I left very satisfied. I definitely recommend it!
