Spires is one of those places that is consistently middle of the road. You'll never leave thinking that you got a great meal, but you won't likely be disappointed, either. My mother and I stopped in for breakfast. I hadn't been here in probably 5 years. For once, we didn't have to wait. (Breakfast on the weekends is usually pretty busy.) We were seated in the back corner. Our waitress was super friendly and gave us good service. I ordered the lumberjack breakast. The sausage and ham were pretty good. The eggs were flabby and a little cold. My breakfast came with a waffle. It was moist and limp. I still ate it, but it wasn't the crispy delight I had hoped to get. My mother ordered a breakfast that came with a biscuit and gravy. She took one taste of her gravy and stopped eating it. I think it was flavored with bacon rather than sausage. It was "interesting." So, she didn't eat much of her biscuit. She also picked at her homefries. I was surprised to see such big chunks of potatoes in her homefries. Makes me wonder if they were cooked all the way through. Our service made up for the lack of high quality food. read more

You guys deserve to go out of business. I could've gotten sick. They are lucky we took the left over food home or I would've made a huge scene this food is so gross and I don't know how they could ever serve this and it's like they don't care. I have pictures and the chicken was bloody. I hope we don't get sick cause you will catch a case with us. read more

A bit disappointed, menus are updated but now they no longer have a kids menu. The quality of the food isn't the same as before. Perhaps they changed cooks? Service is good as always. Everyone is accommodating and nice. They are always busy and the wait isn't too long so that's a good sign. However, the only thing I enjoy are the pancakes. There're so fluffy! read more

This place brought back memories, of the Spires I grew up by that use to be in Santa Fe Springs, many moons ago and then got torn down and new restaurants take place over it :( So we went late Sunday morning and was surprised to have been seated quickly, as Sundays are the most crowded when everyone's getting out of church or just the huge families going at that time everyone goes. It was nice. Same menu (with more choices these days), food was good, fast and service was also good. It looks small on the outside, but it does accommodate pretty well. If you ever in the mood for breakfast (or lunch/dinner/late night) food, and not in the mood for Denny's or Norm's, this is the place to go. read more

I have been looking for a good place for eggs and waffles and this place nailed it. Good, clean restaurant. Very friendly people. The eggs were NOT served in a bath of grease or burnt butter so that was nice. Good place. Will be back read more

Had the NY steak and bacon avocado omelette. Low end steak that was very tuff. Should have ordered a baseball bat to tenderize it. Note to self bring bat or mallet. Omelette was not up to par either. Eggs tasted like powdered eggs. This was cafeteria food service aka the public school system from the 80s. Yikes. Two stars due to the good service. read more

This Spires in particular is quite friendly and warm. The food is nice and hearty. I love, love, love breakfast and can eat it all day long. I happened to be getting a car wash close by and thought I'd walk here for a bite during the break. I was greeted by Karla. Very charming young lady. Today would mark my 4th visit in the last two weeks. I think I have a new permanent spot for my egg white omelettes. Oh yes, they now ask if I'll be having the usual when I walk in. read more

My mom likes this place. I like it too. It's more of an "old people" place but it's a nice place. I usually come here like 1-4 times a year. My last visit was for my moms birthday and everyone enjoyed their meal. She always gets the country breakfast and I get the same or the lumberjack breakfast. read more

This is a really fine diner. I had a Popeye omelet made into a scramble with home potatoes and coffee. I sat at the corner and was one of those customers that take their sweet time and it seems like they'll never leave. The thing is, I was impressed with how sweet everyone was, I just wanted to stay and soak it all in. Now the omelet/scramble was good. I wish mine had more spinach in it. The man next to me seemed to have a generous amount. And I love spinach so much! The daily homemade salsa was amazing. With all the food I was able to witness coming out of the kitchen, I'll definitely be back. I'm going to give four stars because this place has room for improvement....and I can't wait to come on back to try the pork chops. They looked thick, huge and juicy. read more

This place as been around for as long as I can remember and that may just be why it's remained so popular. It's on two major streets and that could help it's status. Don't get me wrong, spires is another type of breakfast diner chains that have been around for years. However, it could use some sprucing up for sure. Plenty of parking and good prices. This place can be crowded for breakfast on the weekends for sure. The kitchen bar is one of my favorite parts of the set up. They have a stuff animal game at the entrance for the kids. I came in the other day by myself for a quick bite for breakfast. I figured this place is supposed to be better for breakfast. Prices were fair and had a good selection of items on the menu. By far the best part was the service. Paulina was awesome, hadn't seen her since high school and she did a stellar job. Super accommodating and checked up on me often. I got a standard breakfast, eggs, hash browns, toast, and coffee. Can't say the coffee was amazing, standard diner stuff. It's crazy because this place is just down the block from where I live so I would love to come by more often, I just don't. Overall I see why it's stood the test of time, loyalty. We had the salmon fish it was not cooked well and the fries were not cooked either. We sent the fries back. Everything was cold and dry. Horrible service too. Waiter was not happy to be working. We were very disappointed with our meal. Will not come back here again. This was our first and last time. :( read more

I came to this place because my cousins wanted to try something similar but different than Dennis and Ihop. It was early in the morning I believe they barely open when we got there. The food was Ok. I think I would rather to go to Dennis next time. The staff is very polite BUT (this is going to be hilarious) we all order coffee and my mug had Bright red lipstick stain on the top. Literally it was like they didn't even bother to wash it OR the lady who drank from that mug before had a Heck of a lipstick!! The thing is that I told our waiter to change my mug because the lipstick stain and HE LITERALLY WAITED AND LOOK AT ALL OF MY COUSINS LIPS TO SEE IF ONE OF US HAD RED LIPSTICK. LIKE IF WE WERE LYING. Are you kidding me??? Why would I lie about it?? Hahaha Funny. Good thing none of us had makeup on. I don't think I'll ever come to this place again. Disgusting. read more

Me and my hubby love this place. Yes maybe it us for the 60 something crowd. It's a older restaurant that isn't fancy by today's standards. Who cares? I've always seen clean freshly wiped tables and those waitresses really work hard to get everyone's food served. I like all of them. The prices are great. Scott's favorite is the Lumberjack Breakfast. For a big guy it's a real pleased. They get all kinds of goodies like hash browns, eggs, ham, sausage and bacon and pancakes or waffles. It's a deal! Everything is always done right and with a smile too. This is why we like it. It's been there for many years and many more years to come. Us seniors love the place. read more

I love spires restaurant. This location is the one me and my family have been coming to for years. I love the breakfast. Great service, good deals and quality food. The staff is friendly, and very welcoming many of their employees have been there for over 10 years, so coming in is nice when you see a familiar face. I have been in at their dinner service and it's great as well. However, I do enjoy the breakfast menu. It's not fancy, just a place for a relaxing breakfast with great service. read more

I LOVE Spires!!!!!! I havent been to one since they closed the one down in Monrovia, CA. Great daily deals! Get both soup and Salad, entree, and a dessert!!!! Came here after a day of fun at Redondo Beach Pier. My daughter got the steak special. I shared the pork chop daily special with the third person in our party. The waitress was cool enough to split one pork chop and a scoop of mash potatoes onto two plates. read more

I'm actually writing this as I'm eating; that's how impressed I am. It's a Friday morning about 7:30 am. I never eat at what I refer to as diners. However; there is no Starbucks at this intersection. I had time to kill, and I was hungry. Let me say , if I ever go to a diner I would drive here specifically for the staff at this location. The hostess that greeted very welcoming. Juanita was my waitress, and all I can say is superb! She was so friendly and accommodating. I know that I am an easy customer, but I saw her interact with the other customers and she was great! Aside from the great service, the rest of the staff was friendly too. Even the chef was smiling. In regards to the food, I had oatmeal. I know that that's not a meal to judge a review by, but I'm picky with my oatmeal. Theirs is good. This experience opened my eyes to the diner experience. This is my second time at this Spires. The first time me and family arrived was for breakfast, and that was a winner. So what happened? We arrived around after noon on a Sunday, where Norm's and even Sizzler was too overcrowded. I hate long waits, and I was starving. So I suggested to the fam that we should check out Spires, which one of us wanted Fried Chicken. I only suggested it since it is a Diner, they should have fried chicken. We get there, and we order lunch, except for Larry, he's the smart one- He ordered breakfast. I order some sandwich which is the famous Spires yada-yada sandwich- It sucked. And my poor Fiancée, she got a bland looking, tasting fried chicken. I told her if we go back, it would just be for breakfast. She won't ever come back, so there you have it. This was a random stop to fulfill a waffle craving, and the place was surprisingly busy for mid-morning on a weekday. But people kept coming, and if you saw their breakfast prices and the extra discount for seniors, then I understand why. They have fully loaded breakfast meals at a deal. My coffee cup was never empty and the service was fast. The food is good, exactly what you'd expect from a diner type place. But the service and atmosphere make this a great stop. It's not too far from LAX either, which is great for those who travel a lot for work and want a quick bite to eat. Their burgers looked delicious too, hopefully I'll get to stop in and try one soon. read more

Diner food galore. It was pretty full here on a Saturday morning. Our waiter was super nice and fast. I was stuck between breakfast and lunch, so I went with lunch. I ordered a bacon burger with onion rings. It was all good. I ordered sweet tea being the Southern girl that I am and my friend quickly alerted me on that. She said it will NOT be sweet at all. I'm like "Huh? But I said 'sweet' tea...?" She was right. Even if you ask for sweet tea, they'll still bring it out bland... lol. *shrugs* Don't ask. All in all, it was good diner food. Oh no, the fryer went down. Inconvenient. We waited 45 mins before someone came to tell us about the problem. The main person affected was my Mommy. She ordered fish and the solution the staff came up with meant she couldn't get her dish, but could get the friess. I hope the fryers have been fixed since with went last Saturday. This is Mom's favorite restaurant, and she has been coming there for over 30 years. It was a bad day for me to go. No good impressions left on me. I read the last good news review they had was in 2005. I guess with a little investment, Spires can get back to its glory days. read more

The interior is minimalist with vintage-looking posters of the business. They have WiFi and complimentary water. We ordered matcha and mango flavored bingsoo. I've lived near this Spires for the last 10+years and I've probably only dined here 5-8 times. I love supporting local business but the reason I don't come here more often is because this place never impresses me. Aside from friendly staff and decent value, everything else about this restaurant is mediocre at best. The decor is dated. I guess this is the "old-fashioned" ambiance they're going for. Although the Normal Rockwell pictures are pretty cool. The tables always feel kinda sticky to me. And the biggest disappointment is the food, which is always just "OK", but never great. I think the final straw for me was when I came for breakfast one day and ordered the Steak & Eggs. Most of the breakfast was fine, but the steak was the worst I'd ever tasted. Flavorless & tough as leather. I could actually hear the knife "zip" as I was cutting into it. This was the first & only time I've ever left a steak unfinished. Having said this, I will state again that the servers are friendly. And the prices are pretty good considering the amount of food you get. Notably, the kids breakfast (eggs, bacon/sausage, hash browns, toast) for $2.99, which is just about the same size as the adult breakfast (which comes with the exact same items) for $6. Not too shaby! If you're looking for just value, Spires isn't a bad choice. If you're looking for great taste, you might be better off looking somewhere else. read more

Terrible Experience from Start to Finish I recently had the worst dining experience at Spires. From the moment we walked in, the host seemed visibly stressed and struggled to seat people properly. Walk-ins were being seated before parties that had been waiting for over 30 minutes, which was extremely frustrating. The service was even worse. Our waiter was slow and inattentive, failing to offer napkins or even water. When the coffee finally arrived, no creamer was provided. The food was the biggest disappointment. Everything came out cold, indicating it had likely been left out for some time. To make matters worse, one of our orders was completely forgotten. We had to get up and search for our waiter to ask about the missing food, which was just an order of waffles. He then told us they would start making it now. Overall, it was a horrible experience from start to finish. This place is not what it used to be. Stay away. read more

This is probably going to fall on deaf ears from management but here it goes. I just had the worst experience at this location with the manager Carlos. I was not looking for a free meal I was only letting him know the pancakes were not the typical spires pancakes I've had in the past. And the ham on the eggs Benedict had a weird taste as well as my wife's sausage. He was extremely rude and stood like 3.5 feet away from the table. And when he spoke to us he was very demeaning like I haven't eaten pancakes before. By the time I went to pay I was pretty pissed and the bass in my voice started to gather the employees and they just gathered around waiting for a fist fight. It was almost like they were waiting for someone to pop him one. Overall there needs to be a change in management if this company wants to stick around if not then kiss Spires goodbye. read more

Stepping into Spires in Lawndale is like taking a delicious step back in time. The moment you walk in, you feel the authentic, classic diner atmosphere that's becoming a rarity in the area. Our server Stefano, who was incredibly awesome, made the experience even better. The food was great and priced just right, so you can enjoy a satisfying meal without breaking the bank. Always clean and service is usually perfect.! today it was fantastic, drinks got filled before we asked and food was at the table in a timely manor. She introduced herself, was loud and clear, checked on us many times, and offered to refill our bottomless items. It was clear that she cared about our experience. Cynthia left a strong positive impression on us (and by extension, this location as well). We felt appreciated as a customer! This is an exemplar example of what I'd expect when dining out. Once our food was served, we gobbled the first plate of french fries up pretty quickly and immediately asked for some refills that didn't come for 45 minutes.......you read that right, 45 minutes for two small plates that maybe had 15 fries on them a piece. Needless to say, we tapped out out of frustration and just paid and left. Overall, you generally know what you are getting when you come to a chain like Red Robin and you are here exactly for those things. The food was just as solid as it always was, but the lack of service which appeared to be from the kitchen instead of our waitress was a huge disappointment and left us not caring to return to this location in the future. If I wasn't hungry, I would have definitely canceled the whole thing and left. And no, I wasn't going to ask them to remake my food after all of this because at that point I wasn't comfortable with that either. So yes, I took the food. But what really got me was the customer service. After ALL of that, nothing. No real apology, no offer to refund the order, nothing for the inconvenience. They should have refunded my order anyway after putting me through all of that just to get food I had already paid for. The whole thing made absolutely no sense. The explanation didn't make sense. The way it was handled didn't make sense. And the customer service was horrible. I'm sooooo done with this place. Never coming to this circus act again.

Our food and service were enjoyable, but when we reviewed our receipt, we discovered that both of our lunch meals had been charged at prices higher than those listed on the lunch menu. Fortunately, we had taken a photo of the lunch menu before ordering, so we were able to verify the correct advertised prices. After bringing it to the staff's attention, the pricing discrepancy was corrected. This also prompted us to write a letter to the corporate headquarters for Islands Restaurants, located at 5760 Fleet Street, Suite 100 in Carlsbad, California (they have still NOT responded). We are sharing this simply as a friendly reminder for others to take a moment to review their bill before paying, especially if you're ordering from the lunch menu. We are enjoying eating out less and less given the rising menu prices, automatic service charges, and hidden fees. Nearly 40% of Americans are eating out less frequently. Accumulated inflation, delivery markups, and unexpected add-on costs have made restaurant meals feel less worth our hard earned money.
