A chain store I'm sure you've heard of advertises "footlong" sandwiches for $5. Truth in advertising laws being what they are, I'm sure those sandwiches are indeed 12 inches long. Having seen those sandwiches up close, however, I'd imagine the width to be about 2 inches. Also, expect skimpy amounts of meat and veggies topped with tiny cheese triangles if you go there. At Spiteri's, $5.95 gets you a sandwich that probably isn't 12 inches in any one dimension, but is large in all, with big thick slices and rolls packed with meat, cheese and veggies. Oh yeah, it's also much, much better. Much. "Fresh" fast food chains are still fast food chains. Spend the extra buck, get just as much (if not more) for your money, and support a local business rather than a national chain. As your reward, you'll get a better sandwich in the process. Last time I went and ordered the lasagne. It was served piping hot on a microwaved paper plate. A nice one, you know, recyclable. Sturdy. The plate, that is. The lasagne was meh. I'd never heard of this deli until my new-ish group of friends started including me on their Saturday sandwiches lunches. It was intimidating at first as a newbie, but the staff is friendly and helpful. My sandwiches are always yummy (even though they're always the same. I'm a creature of habit). Ingredients are fresh. Nice bread choices. Decent prices. Drawbacks: sucks being a vegetarian. I always want the half sandwich and soup combo, but the soup is never vegetarian. Although, I shouldn't complain because no one I'm with who orders the combo ever seems to be really satisfied with the soup anyways. Their hot tea selection is sucky. They only had one kind, and it looked as though it had been sitting there since last Christmas (it was a cinnamon tea?). For years i was content with eating at places like Subway for my sandwiches, or just buckling down and making my own. I make amazing sandwiches, and really just ate at sandwich shops as a quick filler when i was in a rush. My perspective of this all changed after my husband asked it i had ever been to Spiteri's. My answer was "where", in which he immediately had us rush across town so that i could experience this deli for myself. This place has been amazing since that very first day i got a sandwich. since then I've tried their assortment of salads. This is a WIDE range of salads, and it's ever changing. There's pasta, potato, veggie, fruit, cheese, dessert, i know i'm missing some. They don't skimp on any ingredients. You'll be pleased to find huge chunks of artichokes or delicately cut kiwi slices to look like flowers. The pasta has always been cook perfectly, and the sauces are vibrant in flavor. It's all behind glass so you can drool over what you want as a side with your sandwich, or go all and and just eat a salad. They also have meatloaf nestled in the middle of all of that. This has been my son's favorite. He's 2 and will not eat anything else but a huge slab of meatloaf. The Sandwiches they make also have their spot in making this place amazing. First of all they have a generous list of meats, cheeses, and breads to choose from. I really enjoy the smoked cheddar they serve, okay i like all their cheeses. the meats are better quality than you could get at most sandwich shops, and the breads have always been fluffy. What you receive after order is a monster of a sandwich. If you ordered something with meat, then expect a good 1 to 2 in mountain of meat on it. If you get just cheese (aka veggie) then you'll be happily please be lots of cheese. On top of all of this there is an italian dressing that sits on most tables that you can drench your sandwich in. This is their version of olive oil and vinegar, and it is truly amazing. The last thing i'm going to talk about is the customer service. Everyone who works there is kind and upbeat. I haven't had a complaint in the world for the men and women who work behind the counter. In fact, i was even shocked when one of the ladies turned around to take our order, looked at my son, and went "wow, he just gets bigger every time I see him. Will he like the meatloaf today?". That, right there, is amazing. They are a busy business, and yet employees can remember small details like what a 2 year old eats whenever he's in there. read more

I finally made it over to Spiteri's for a sandwich the other day, as I have heard from many that this is the place to go for a great one in Chico. I have to say that I would have gone sooner, if it weren't for the unusual location and outside appearance of the place. I walked in and immediately was hit with that fantastic "deli smell" and the 70's deli decor. The aroma of cold cuts and cheeses brought back memories of my family's weekly visits to the Round House deli in Campbell, CA when I was a kid, but that's a whole other story. (Damn, I miss that place!) ;-) I was pleased to see that there were at least a couple of choices on the menu beyond the usual ham, turkey and roast beef. I decided to try the coppa, since I am a huge fan of this and all Italian-style cold cuts (you may also know it by capicola or "gabagool" if you watched the Sopranos). I chose the Dutch Crunch roll and got a half sandwich. ($3.95) There were tons of choices for sides in the case, and I chose a small side of the potato salad with egg ($0.95). I didn't get a drink, but there were plenty of soft drinks and beer to choose from in the refrigerated cooler in the back of the deli. My order was done pretty quickly and was brought over to me by a friendly employee at the table where I was waiting. The sandwich was tasty and included a generous amount of meat and provolone cheese (bonus points!). It was quite large for a half sandwich. All the other sandwich "fixings" were nice and fresh. The Dutch Crunch roll was awesome - on the soft side how I like it. The potato salad was yummy too. The only thing I was disappointed about was the fact that the coppa was sliced way too thick. A cured cold cut like that needs to be sliced very thin or it is really hard to bite and chew. I will request it "extra thin" next time. I'd never heard about this place until a friend mentioned it being a hole in the wall across from a donut shop I've been to. I'm not sure what the deal is with the strip mall in the back but this place is a hidden treasure. I'll be going back to try other sandwiches as well as the prepared food they offer as well. Excellent sandwiches and service. Many of the servers know me as a regular and remember my typical order. The dutch crunch is fantastic and the deli meats are always fresh. This is my favorite sandwich shop in town by far, and the first place I recommend to others. There is shaded outdoor seating as well. The line can get pretty long during the week between noon and 1pm but the staff is good about keeping the line moving fast. If you are in a rush though, you can call in your order ahead of time and skip the line. If you haven't tried this place yet, you definitely should. read more

Went here for lunch Tuesday during Spring Break before St Patrick's Day this year so it wasn't crowded at all besides one other family. This deli reminded me of the back deli in the little market in my home town except restaurant style. All the produce and meats were very fresh and cut daily. I ordered a provolone cheese and vegetable sandwich and my bf ordered a pastrami sandwich. They were both a good size and filling enough. We also ordered some red potato salad which was really good as well. The staff was efficient with taking our order and making our food. They had a wide variety of drinks to choose from along with choices for your sandwiches and side dishes. Overall it was a very nice experience. My only complaint is that they should have put more cheese on my sandwich because the bread was pretty thick and overpowering with veggies. I have had good luck with them before and had been a returning customer. Had. I ordered what I found to be utmost Delicious. Corned Beef and Pastrami on Sliced Sour Dough with Pepper Jack Cheese. Absolutely Devine. What killed my patronage of them forever was waiting to pay for my sandwich and at eye level , on the cold cut case, on the top was a Live Roach, walking about. No one of the staff took notice of this. I quietly squished it with one of their decorative displays. I went to the back and asked who was in charge, a Manager. Once located I explained what, where found said intruder. The Manager's response was a quiet thank you and carried on with her Business. This was a ROACH!. Spiteri's is a clean, beautiful place. WOW! my boyfriend just took me to Spiteri's and they have a new customer for life! I LOVED my meal and EVERYTHING looked sooo yummy it was really hard to choose. Their sandwiches are really yummy, filling, and fresh. I love their bread, it was perfect, little crunch on the outside but light and fluffy on the inside. And I got this pesto pasta salad on the side, and it was to die for! We read great reviews so we made the 2 hour drive and really wanted to like this place. Sandwiches are large and staff was friendly enough but their meat is awful. I had a rueben and the pastrami tasted like cheap processed Walmart special meat. My wife had turkey bacon avocado and it was decent but again cheap tasting meat and avocado was from a pouch. We went here for lunch yesterday and were completely blown away. I haven't had such great tasting food in a long time. It all tasted so good, so homemade, and so filling. My husband and I got the Reuben and my mouth is watering just thinking about it. It was big, and well priced at under $9. We also got their bacon mac-n-cheese, the broccoli salad, some kind of Russian fry bread I can't remember the name of, chips, and drinks for under $30!!! It was an amazing price for all of that food. My Spiteri's experience was alright. They offered a lot of options, and I ordered a turkey wrap. I wanted more salad toppings than they gave, and there was way too much turkey in my wrap. It actually made me a bit nauseous! I also was hoping for some fresher and healthier salad options, but it seemed to be mostly pasta and potato salads. Their dutch crunch bread is amazing, and they have the best vegetarian sandwich that I have ever had, hands down (double cheese of your choice, sprouts, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, and avocado). I always add EXTRA olives. You should expect a long line, because if you are a local, you are very familiar with the Spiteri's sandwich craving. Despite the long line, you move along pretty quickly. Tried this place for the first time despite being in Chico at a constant. The place is full of twenty-somethings; eating and behind the counter. I wouldn't say this was unpleasant but could scare away some people. Good music station! Classic stuff like Led Zeppelin, The Who and Pink Floyd. A+ there! I ordered the turkey and gouda with bacon and avocado on a dutch roll. It was pretty good. The roll was soft, the turkey wasn't dry at all. The gouda was cheese...which never fails no matter what kind. Bacon was awesomely fashioned into some type of circle so it fit the sandwich perfect. That was a nice touch. The only issue I had was the size could have been a bit bigger. Location isn't the best either. It's difficult getting out of that parking lot if you plan to head back to the highway.
