Spent the weekend in Pismo so had to try this place after hearing all the recommendations. Clam chowder and sourdough was some of the best I've had. Quaint little shop with fantastic service. Loved it so much I also bought some frozen chowder to take home with me. Lived up to the hype.
When we got here, there was a line but moved pretty fast. Lobster roll: 3/5 I have definitely had better. But giving it a 4 overall because the person making the lobster roll was very generous. Didn't taste the Calm Chowder but fam definitely enjoyed the chowder more than the roll.
This is such a well know establishment I had to make a stop as I was passing through. I ordered online to avoid the wait time and picked up my clam chowder to enjoy at the beach. It was delicious. Would love to come back and try some of their burgers. Took a peak inside and it was super busy. There were many tables to sit at but the wait was about an hour.
Delicious food and super fast service. We got the clam chowder in a bread bowl with the seafood, clams, and green onions, and also got the grilled cheese. Good sized portions. Just know you might be a line a while since it's popular but the line moves fast. Great casual place. Want to come back for their lobster rolls next time.
The best clam chowder ever!!! Splash cafe is a must-visit if you're in Pismo Beach. This was my second time here and honestly the food tasted better than I remembered! My friend and I ordered a clam chowder bread bowl, a regular clam chowder bowl, and calamari & fries to share. We were FULL and had leftovers. The clam chowder was delicious, and the calamari & fries were also really good. I highly recommend getting both! I came on a Saturday around 8pm, and there was still a line outside. Thankfully the wait to order wasn't too long. After ordering, you can find a seat and wait for your food to be ready. Overall, I had another great experience at Splash Café and would definitely come back the next time I'm in Pismo Beach!
Splash Cafe is such a staple eatery in Pismo Beach, located by the boardwalk, it's difficult to see the place without a line. We tried the 1/2 steamers, fish and chips, and clam chowder. Everything we tasted was delicious! The broth the steamers came in was so tasty and paired perfectly with the bread to soak everything up. The fish and chips were nice and crispy. We loved the curly fries it came with. The clam chowder was our favorite, it tasted so homey and rich, yet still light and full of flavor. Would recommend coming early as this place can get packed. There are tables and bar seating - seats open up fairly quickly. They also have a special type of carrot hot sauce that packs some flavor to whatever you choose to add it to!
Came here years ago and Ofcourse since we stayed in Pismo again, we had to stop by for some clam chowda and this time we did the seafood + bacon + green onions topping. I'm not sure I'd get any of these toppings again as the soup is great by itself but it was nice trying something different. It's huge and definitely a good portion to share if you want to try some other things. Service is quick as well!
Customer service when ordering at the counter was great. The guy at pick-up not so much. Was in town with my mom and had to find out what the hype was all about so I ordered a cup of the "famous" chowder. I LOVE chowder and since I live between both Santa Cruz and San Francisco, I've enjoyed plenty. Sadly, the chowder at Slash was pretty disappointing. My cup had very few clams and potatoes and an overwhelming amount of cream. The place was packed even at 3pm so clearly tons of folks like it but not me unfortunatly. The vibe is old school diner. I won't be returning any time soon.
Yes it is true, the best chowder around. I know seems like a tourist trap, but it is not. The Splash Cafe is just flat out good! You must stop in and partake. I had the bread bowl and chowder, a simple classic. I recommend the splash cafe carrot pepper sauce - Raucous Daucus!! My Bride ordered the clam strips and chips, fried perfectly! Thank you Splash Cafe, keep doing what you do! We'll be back every time we are in town.
While searching for restaurants in SLO County, Splash Cafe came up repeatedly as having some of the best clam chowder in California, so it quickly became a priority stop on my trip. When I arrived on a Monday evening, I was surprised by how long the line was to order. What impressed me even more was how quickly the staff moved everyone through and got food out. They clearly know what they're doing. The clam chowder absolutely lived up to the hype. It was rich, creamy, and packed with flavor. Honestly, just writing this review makes me crave another bowl. My mom ordered the lobster roll, and we were impressed by how generous they were with the lobster. Another nice bonus is that they offer daily specials, giving you even more reasons to come back and try something new. Overall, I highly recommend Splash Cafe and would consider it a must-visit spot when exploring SLO County.
Located next to pismo beach. Theres paid parking lot or paid street parking nearby. Or you go a block away theres free 3 hour street parking. Process: - Line up - Order - Grab a table If you order to dine in, they will call your name when its ready. Just raise your hand to let them know where you are so they can bring it out for you. If you do to go, your food is called out at the back of the store. This place is pretty poppin. We arrived around 5 PM. All the tables were full but we got luckily and got 2 seats. I would not recommend bringing a large party here to dine in. They have 2 genderless restrooms located all the way in the back. It's clean and well kept. Order: - Clam chowder (9/10): the clam chowder is amazing. They have actual clam inside. You can get it in a bread bowl or container. The container size range from cup to pint. - Fish & Chip (3/10): This was also recommended on the menu but it was subpar. Lacked a lot of flavor. The chips looked season but it tasted like nothing. The tartar sauce and lemon helped out a lot. I would definitely come back for the clam chowder tho!
Best clam chowder in California? I saw a claim saying that Splash Cafe was the best clam chowder in ALL of California and I had to go try it myself. I came on a Thursday when it was raining and there was still a line out the door. We also struggled to find a parking spot regardless of the weather being rain or shine. Majority of the parking spots are metered and it was $5 for 1 hour which is crazy. Since we came on a Thursday, the loaded clam chowder bread bowl had a $2 discount! The total came out to be $18.35 after tax. Obviously, we ordered that and shared it between two people! It took about 5 minutes after ordering for us to receive our order. Food: Loaded Clam Chowder Bread Bowl (9/10): Oh WOW! We decided to take it to-go and their packaging was so convenient. Everything was packaged separately and deconstructed so the bread bowl wouldn't be all soggy and the bisque would be non-existent by the time we got home. In the loaded bread bowl, they cut out the hole so we can place the bisque in and they toast the top with butter! The loaded clam chowder comes with cheese, clam, crab(?), bacon, and green onion! The clam chowder was SO creamy! Every bite was LOADED with all the toppings.
This was highly recommended by a frequent visitor. Boy, are we glad we came. It was delicious. The bread bowl is a must. They toast part of the bread--delicious! We took w food and at one of the nearby tables down by the water. It was perfect.
Love the clam chowder and curly fries. The chowder is not your normal chowder your use to, it seem like it's much more creamier. Really really good and comforting. Now the lobster roll was cold, not sure if the meat inside was suppose to be cold, but it looks like minced lobster bits not chunks of lobster BTW. Perfect comfort food for an overcast day! We ordered the bowl of clam chowder, a pint of clam chowder to go, a lobster roll, and fries. The clam chowder was rich and flavorful, and I appreciated that they were generous with the extra toppings. The only downside was that the toppings were served cold, which cooled down the chowder a bit. I wish the chowder had been served piping hot, as it would have made it even more satisfying. The lobster roll and fries made for a great quick meal, and overall it's a solid spot when you're craving comforting seafood. Nothing too fancy just a decent place for a quick, satisfying bite. read more

Splash Cafe is a seaside restaurant that opened in 1989 and is one of the longest standing restaurants in the Central Coast. It's located in Pismo Beach by the beach and the pier. It has a casual and beach-town vibe with its decor and interior. We were driving from Paso Robles and made a stop by Splash Cafe because we were told the clam chowder was really good. When we arrived there was a decent sized line that moved quickly. Other than clam chowder they also offer sandwiches, burgers, and have daily specials. They have different sizes and you can get it in a bread bowl as well. We ordered the cup ($7.95) and it came out really hot and stayed hot. It was creamy, delicious, and flavorful. We liked it so much we got the bowl size ($11.95) to go. It was definitely one of the best clam chowders I've had and I can see why it has all those awards hanging on the wall and why it's an absolute staple in the area. read more
I heard this cafe had the reputation for serving the best clam chowder so my expectations were high going in. I came in on a Friday around 1pm. There was a long line, but it moved briskly. Once I ordered I received my food within 5 minutes. I ordered a pint of clam chowder and onion rings. The chowder lived up to the billing. The chowder was creamy, thick, just the right amount of clams to potatoes. Perfection!!Probably the best I've ever had. The onion rings were great as well. Nicely seasoned. Initially we went here to eat-in but due to the Pismo Beach festival, it was too busy. So we decided to do takeout and eat at the beach. Their take out process was effective especially since they announce clearly on a speaker. Being from San Francisco, I've had my share of clam Chowder. Theirs is different but very good as well. Wish we had sourdough bowls though. Their bread didn't do justice for the chowder. The kids liked the grilled cheese. Highly recommend and will come back next time in town, or may even come back before heading back home. read more
This is a must try over in Pismo Beach! The seating inside is pretty crowded because so many people are here, and I can see why. The clam chowder bread bowl is a must get -- one of the best clam chowders I've ever had. I also really enjoyed the fish and chips (the chips are curly fries!), and my friend enjoyed the fried fish tacos that are loaded with toppings. Overall, a great vacation lunch spot! read more

A must when visiting Pismo! Casual restaurant near the pier, famous for their clam chowder. It's a tradition for us every time we visit Pismo Beach to stop by here at Splash Cafe. My kids enjoy having the usual clam chowder and calamari fries. We were here right when it opened and there was no line yet. We got our food fast and hot so pretty happy with that. It wasn't crowded inside at that time but we're happy to enjoy the breeze and sun while eating. It's best to just order the large sizes and share, we will see yall soon again! read more

Something that stood out to me is that the clams were good size chunks and the "soup" itself was delicious, almost like cream of mushroom for some reason. The bread bowl itself was also very decent. Had to try this iconic place out during our trip. We ordered the loaded clam chowder bread bowl, fish and chips, lobster roll, and onion rings. The clam chowder was absolutely the star of the meal. There is a reason it is what they're known for. Fish and chips were just okay. Fish was dry and harder than we expected. Onion rings were crispy and fresh. Lobster roll was good and we would get it again. Food came out fast and the workers were all nice. You can tell it's a local favorite in addition to being a tourist destination. My husband said this is the creamiest clam chowder he has had in years. The fish and chips were very good. They were breaded and not greasy. I did not like the onion rings at all unfortunately. There is usually a long line but it moves fast and we had no problem getting seats. It's right by the pier so very convenient location. This place definitely lives up to the hype! read more

I've came here twice now and both times I was blown away. Located super close to the beach parking lot and pier with plenty of parking. We came today around 11am and there was already a line that managed to move pretty quickly. The last time the line was around the block but still went fast enough that it didn't discourage anyone in line. I ordered the clam chowder with everything in it. It looked like a poke bowl at first, it was so loaded. I regret not getting a bread bowl this time because a few bites in we both mentioned how good a piece of some good toasted bread would enhance this through the roof. We also added some of the jalapeños from our fish taco to our chowder and it was amazing. Definitely gonna request that next time if possible. The food isn't cheap but id say you get your money's worth. I made the mistake of adding a custom tip and slipped in an extra zero. 40 dollar tip wasn't my intention but I wasn't gonna cry about it. Chalk it up and hopefully the crew sees it and feels appreciated. The interior is as beach Cafe as it gets. We sat at the front window and had more flies accompanying us than we'd like but I wont hold it against them. If you're looking for a classy establishment, this might not be your place. But if you want a real beach front experience with great food, you can't miss out on eating here read more
Cool little spot off Pismo Beach. If you come here, you have to get the clam chowder in a bread bowl, that's what they're known for! We also grabbed a hot dog, which was meh, but the chowder was solid: thick, creamy, and hits the spot. Overall, the place has a lively, beach-loungin type vibe. We came back again! I absolutely love their clam chowder, especially the Thursday special loaded chowder in a bread bowl. Wow! It had lot of shrimp, crab, bacon, lots of green onion, cheese... everything was so good. My favorite part is the sourdough bread topper;;;; they toast it, so it's crunchy and super tasty. Their hot sauce is great too. The carrot hot sauce doesn't really taste like carrot, but it's addicting! I kept adding it to my chowder. Splash Café: Chowder Worth the Hype Stopped by Splash Café at night with some friends after a long road trip. It's a well-known spot for clam chowder, so we had to give it a shot and it didn't disappoint. * Clam Chowder: I ordered a cup, and it was amazing. Rich, creamy, and flavorful definitely lived up to the reputation. * Location & Atmosphere: Just a block from the beach, with good views and a laid-back, welcoming vibe. Perfect for winding down after a long drive. Service: Friendly and efficient. It was busy (as expected for a popular spot), so we had to wait a bit but it was absolutely worth it. We got the 3 piece fish and chips, clam chowder in a bread bowl and 2 of the fried fish tacos Baja style. Everything was good. The bread bowl top was toasted and chowder was good. The fried fish was fresh and not heavy breading. The fish tacos use the same fish. It fills the corn tortillas to overflowing. 2 is plenty! The only thing to knock about splash is not enough sit down space but that's what you have to expect in a beach town literal "hole in the wall" restaurant. Best clam chowder we've ever had! It was so great, we came back again the next day. The first day we had the clam chowder bread bowl, it was heaven! The second day we had the loaded bread bowl and lobster roll. Everything was very good! We envisioned the lobster roll being a hot sandwich but it wasn't, it was cold. It was still yummy though! We prefer just the traditional chowder bread bowl over everything else. 1000000/10, a must if you're in Pismo. read more

The occasion...my BIRTHDAY, the venue...Splash Cafe in Pismo Beach and as usual, I was not let down. There's an old sayin..."consistency is the first sign of professionalism" and Splash Cafe is definitely consistently really, really good. The line you will most likely see "out the front door" is there for a reason my dear review readers. Sure, there will be "nay sayers" ...always someone in the crowd, but don't pay too much attention to their "noise", give it a try and decide for yourself. Waiting at the register to take my order was Jas. Exuberant attitude, smiling and helpful Jas took my order and topped off the "birthday occasion" by adding a free Cake Pop for dessert. Yasss Jas, thank- you! My order: a Double Bacon Cheeseburger (5/5) Combo w/Onion Rings (5/5 - these onion rings are really "damn good"). I saw a lot of outstanding looking food coming outta the kitchen while I waited for my order...as in, many Clam Chowder Bowls (had them before and yup...they're outstanding especially "fully loaded"). The restaurant had a good "buzz" going on (as per normal) and my order didn't take too long. Nothing to complain about here...except for "the parking situation " in Pismo Beach. I suggest parking farther away and walking in. Other than that, in this Yelper's opinion...on this occasion, as many previously experienced, Splash Cafe in Pismo beach remains a "go to place" and earns another "highly recommend" 5 Star review. read more

So I am sure that we have been here before and we didn't think much of it meaning it might've been a four star when we were here years ago. But now that everything has gone up in price and we were trying other restaurants with lobster rolls. We paid $32 for a lobster roll yesterday somewhere else and the lobster roll here for $17 Was way bigger. I know lobster went up in price, but you could buy a pair of shoes for $32. I liked this clam chowder bowl because it has not so much clams in it. I know that isn't good to say for people who want it to be full of clams. But I don't like it too chunky I just like the base of it. This place allows dogs to be inside most places do in Pizmo, but you still have to ask. It's very crowded on the weekends, but it was very quick and easy on a Tuesday. We'll be back! read more

Came here right when they were about to close so no lines yay! First time here and customer service was good. Plenty of seating inside and very beachy, colorful decor. We ordered 2 bread bowls with the toppings and the toppings tasted great! The chowder itself was too salty to my liking and the calamari was just okay. It's been a long while since I've been to Splash Cafe in Pismo! I used to go to the SLO location on Monterey almost weekly, but it's been closed for a couple of years now unfortunately. Probably one of the best clam chowders I've ever had! Getting curly fries to dip into it was such a great move as well. The contrast of the crispy fries and the creamy chowder really hits. There was quite a bit of a wait, as we decided to come here for Sunday brunch. But it's honestly what you'd expect from a popular spot! There was quite a bit of seating, but since so many people come here to eat, you'd might have to "camp" for a spot to sit. First time back to Pismo Beach in 5 years and we decided to visit our favorite local diner. The place still retained its beach shack casual vibe and was busy as usual. Luckily, we found a table in the back room (inside it has seating for around 50 people). The large menu on the wall showed all the items and their prices. We ordered the following: Lobster Roll: It was loaded with tender but firm texture shelled lobster meat, blended with very flavorful mayonnaise based dressing and celery bits. Fully Loaded Clam Chowder: The sourdough bowl bread was fresh and soft. The savory chowder was creamy, and yes, fully loaded with seafood bits of clams and lobster, and topped with bacon bits, green onion and cheese. Steamer: Clams were simmered in flavorful tomato base sauce. The plump and fresh clams were the smaller size type. It was a very nice meal, and it brought back all the good memories from our past trips to Central Coast. Highly recommended. read more

I've said it before and I'll say it again... this place is THE BEST for clam chowder! Nestled in the heart of Pismo, it's the perfect setting. The beach is just a few steps away, you're craving seafood as the night begins. This place is worth the stop. When you go in, it definitely has that seafood shack vibe. I love the fun clam cartoon decor. It's always been crowded when I go but you can usually find a spot. I always get the clam chowder bread bowl and top it with extra seafood. It never disappoints. The chowder is light and creamy... and best of all, filled with clams. I love the little topper bread they give you that's very toasted. Perfect for dipping! This place is a legend for a reason. I got the famous bread bowl with chowder. They give a good sized portion of bread and chowder and I definitely had a lot leftover. The clam chowder was a little more on the saltier side for me but still very delicious, and they gave a lot of fillings. It was meaty and hearty and definitely hit the right spots on a cold day. I also really like the sour dough bread the clam chowder comes in. The bread was more "sour" than I was used to but loved it since it went great with the heaviness of the chowder. I wish the outer layer of the bread bowl was more crispy but other than that the bread bowl was delicious and definitely worth trying. read more

No, they don't take reservations! They are a counter-service restaurant. Any time that is not a typical meal time is probably the best time to go. Breakfast is usually less crowded than lunch/dinner, but their chowder is a must so up to you!
Are there any vegan options?
They have them now. A beyond meat backyard burger that is labeled vegan, a veggie burger that might be customizable to be vegan, bread, and fries. Probably can make a vegan taco with no protein alternatives. For vegetarians there is grilled cheese.…

Do they have gluten free options or jicama for tortillas?
Not that I have seen in regards to jicama. However, you can probably do a bun less hot dog, a lettuce wrapped burger, etc.
When is the best time to go?
They mostly busy from spring through the summer but if you go before 1130 or after 130, you should be ok.
Do they have a kids menu?
I don't think they have an actual kids menu, but there are plenty of options for kids: burgers, hot dogs, corn dogs (my daughter loved it!), chicken strips and fries. Great prices too!
Is it only seafood served here?
No... They also have burgers, fries, etc. I just happen to love seafood.
