While searching for restaurants in SLO County, Splash Cafe came up repeatedly as having some of the best clam chowder in California, so it quickly became a priority stop on my trip. When I arrived on a Monday evening, I was surprised by how long the line was to order. What impressed me even more was how quickly the staff moved everyone through and got food out. They clearly know what they're doing. The clam chowder absolutely lived up to the hype. It was rich, creamy, and packed with flavor. Honestly, just writing this review makes me crave another bowl. My mom ordered the lobster roll, and we were impressed by how generous they were with the lobster. Another nice bonus is that they offer daily specials, giving you even more reasons to come back and try something new. Overall, I highly recommend Splash Cafe and would consider it a must-visit spot when exploring SLO County.
Splash is a solid place for a quick bite. We visited the one in SLO before it closed a couple of years ago so this is the first time we tried this location. Very busy in downtown but the line does move pretty quickly. Once we ordered our food we got our food in about 10 mins. We ordered a bowl of clam chowder and lobster roll. The lobster roll was okay, it was a lobster salad which we expected and it was loaded with filling. We should've ordered the clam chowder in a bread bowl. It would've been perfect. The clam chowder is a must there. It was so creamy, flavorful, and packed with clams and potatoes. We enjoyed it very much and would come back just for the chowder.
Located next to pismo beach. Theres paid parking lot or paid street parking nearby. Or you go a block away theres free 3 hour street parking. Process: - Line up - Order - Grab a table If you order to dine in, they will call your name when its ready. Just raise your hand to let them know where you are so they can bring it out for you. If you do to go, your food is called out at the back of the store. This place is pretty poppin. We arrived around 5 PM. All the tables were full but we got luckily and got 2 seats. I would not recommend bringing a large party here to dine in. They have 2 genderless restrooms located all the way in the back. It's clean and well kept. Order: - Clam chowder (9/10): the clam chowder is amazing. They have actual clam inside. You can get it in a bread bowl or container. The container size range from cup to pint. - Fish & Chip (3/10): This was also recommended on the menu but it was subpar. Lacked a lot of flavor. The chips looked season but it tasted like nothing. The tartar sauce and lemon helped out a lot. I would definitely come back for the clam chowder tho!
Best clam chowder in California? I saw a claim saying that Splash Cafe was the best clam chowder in ALL of California and I had to go try it myself. I came on a Thursday when it was raining and there was still a line out the door. We also struggled to find a parking spot regardless of the weather being rain or shine. Majority of the parking spots are metered and it was $5 for 1 hour which is crazy. Since we came on a Thursday, the loaded clam chowder bread bowl had a $2 discount! The total came out to be $18.35 after tax. Obviously, we ordered that and shared it between two people! It took about 5 minutes after ordering for us to receive our order. Food: Loaded Clam Chowder Bread Bowl (9/10): Oh WOW! We decided to take it to-go and their packaging was so convenient. Everything was packaged separately and deconstructed so the bread bowl wouldn't be all soggy and the bisque would be non-existent by the time we got home. In the loaded bread bowl, they cut out the hole so we can place the bisque in and they toast the top with butter! The loaded clam chowder comes with cheese, clam, crab(?), bacon, and green onion! The clam chowder was SO creamy! Every bite was LOADED with all the toppings.
I get the hype! The clam chowder actually contained chunks of seafood (even without the extra clams we added). Other clam chowders I've had are usually just the soup with barely any chunks. It came out pipping out and they hollow out the bread bowl and toast it for. I found that to be a really nice addition and you get more soup! The calamari & chips were good. There was a mix of rings and tentacles which we prefer! Great service. It does get a little crowded and might be difficult to snag a seat. If you get it to go you can sit closer to the pier.
My family and I stopped into Pismo Beach to sightsee while on the way to Solvang on Friday! We did some research beforehand on where to stop in for a quick bite and came across Splash Cafe! When we arrived, the line was pretty short and we noticed that we had just beat the rush! The inside was pretty small and they request that you do not sit at a table or the bar area until after you have ordered at the counter which I like. We got a seat in front of one of their windows with a nice view of the area. We ordered the Clam Chowder in a Bread Bowl with Loaded Toppings to share since we were still a little full from breakfast. It was so good - I loved the added toppings of green onions, seafood, cheese and even bacon! They also offer Fish and Chips, Chicken Strips, burgers and specialty sandwiches like their Lobster Roll and Shrimp SLO Boy. I also saw a entire case of fresh baked goods! Staff weren't overly friendly at the counter, but the employee who brought us our order was lovely. Overall, I'm glad we had the chance to stop in and check out their award winning Clam Chowder - I can see why there is always a line out the door! We will definitely stop in again next time we are visiting Pismo Beach! Check them out!
Perfect comfort food for an overcast day! We ordered the bowl of clam chowder, a pint of clam chowder to go, a lobster roll, and fries. The clam chowder was rich and flavorful, and I appreciated that they were generous with the extra toppings. The only downside was that the toppings were served cold, which cooled down the chowder a bit. I wish the chowder had been served piping hot, as it would have made it even more satisfying. The lobster roll and fries made for a great quick meal, and overall it's a solid spot when you're craving comforting seafood. Nothing too fancy just a decent place for a quick, satisfying bite.
Stopped by for lunch on a weekday. The line wasn't too long, so ordering was quick, and the food came out a few minutes after I sat down. There was also more open seating than I expected. I ordered the lobster roll and a cup of clam chowder. The lobster roll is pretty filling and comes packed with meat -- probably enough to share if you want to try other items. The clam chowder was good, creamy and straightforward. The place has a casual, hole-in-the-wall beach town feel that fits Pismo well. It's within walking distance of the beach, and there's nearby parking for about $5 an hour. Overall, a solid option for a quick, casual lunch.
We came here on a whim on our way down from Pismo, and we loved it! We heard a rumor that Splash won the best clam chowder nationally, so we had to give it a try. I thought clam chowder pretty much tasted the same everywhere but it was probably the best clam chowder we've ever had! We finished the whole bowl (which, we're never usually able to do.) The eggs brekkie was okay! The eggs were very moist, so that was a plus! :) Service was good. We ordered in the front and found some seats. The space is a little small. It's a long restaurant, so you could find some round tables in the back, but expect to sit at the bar.
I had a lovely, memorable experience at Splash Cafe (Pismo Beach). I ordered the Clam Chowder Bread Bowl ($12.95). WOW! That immediate familiar clean salty flavor bubbles through. It's creamy and very fresh. Surprisingly, its buttery, fluffy bread brought a bright crunch. I couldn't stop myself from smiling as I continued to feast. I arrived at Splash Cafe (Pismo Beach) on Wednesday (around 8:50AM - 10 Minutes Before Opening Time). A line had already formed!! POPULAR spot! It's a brief two minute walk from Pismo Beach's Pier. Parking is challenging; nearby parking spots contain parking meters. Staff is very professional, welcoming, and efficient. Staff is very experienced and accustomed to the long line of customers. Staff quickly helped me. My food arrived within two minutes. Fast! As mentioned, I ordered the Clam Chowder Bread Bowl ($12.95). It's one of the best! Fresh food, thoughtfully prepared chowder, and delightful service is very apparent. This location has won multiple awards for their Clam Chowder, and the high quality truly shows. As I bit into those thick clams, I smiled. On ambiance, Splash Cafe (Pismo Beach) feels a little claustrophobic due to its narrow dining area and many customers. However, there's a couple large tables in the rear, and there's small tables & counters near the front. Muffled diner music plays, but the main noise are the chatting customers. Overall, I found a blissful experience at Splash Cafe (Pismo Beach). The long lines are well-deserved! It's one of the best clam chowders that I've tasted in a long time. If you love clam chowders, this is an easy recommendation. 5 out of 5. Go!
One of the best clam chowders I've ever had was that splash!! We ordered two bread bread bowl clam chowders loaded with seafood on top. So good. We also ordered fish and chips. My husband wasn't a fan of the breading on the fish. But I did not mind it. You order at the counter and wait for your number to be called. You are not allowed to sit down until your number has been called. We found seats right away. They have a self-serve drink station. Seating is a little crammed... Outdoor seating would be ideal. Splash Cafe is a must stop when coming to Pismo Beach.
This is definitely the best clam chowder I've ever had. Better than any clam chowder in San Francisco or anywhere for that matter. Service was good. The inside had a nice vibe just very packed. The bread pudding came out warm and was amazing. 100% recommend. read more

I've came here twice now and both times I was blown away. Located super close to the beach parking lot and pier with plenty of parking. We came today around 11am and there was already a line that managed to move pretty quickly. The last time the line was around the block but still went fast enough that it didn't discourage anyone in line. I ordered the clam chowder with everything in it. It looked like a poke bowl at first, it was so loaded. I regret not getting a bread bowl this time because a few bites in we both mentioned how good a piece of some good toasted bread would enhance this through the roof. We also added some of the jalapeños from our fish taco to our chowder and it was amazing. Definitely gonna request that next time if possible. The food isn't cheap but id say you get your money's worth. I made the mistake of adding a custom tip and slipped in an extra zero. 40 dollar tip wasn't my intention but I wasn't gonna cry about it. Chalk it up and hopefully the crew sees it and feels appreciated. The interior is as beach Cafe as it gets. We sat at the front window and had more flies accompanying us than we'd like but I wont hold it against them. If you're looking for a classy establishment, this might not be your place. Cool little spot off Pismo Beach. If you come here, you have to get the clam chowder in a bread bowl, that's what they're known for! We also grabbed a hot dog, which was meh, but the chowder was solid: thick, creamy, and hits the spot. Overall, the place has a lively, beach-loungin type vibe. We came back again! I absolutely love their clam chowder, especially the Thursday special loaded chowder in a bread bowl. Wow! It had lot of shrimp, crab, bacon, lots of green onion, cheese... everything was so good. My favorite part is the sourdough bread topper;;;; they toast it, so it's crunchy and super tasty. Their hot sauce is great too. The carrot hot sauce doesn't really taste like carrot, but it's addicting! I kept adding it to my chowder. I got the famous bread bowl with chowder. They give a good sized portion of bread and chowder and I definitely had a lot leftover. The clam chowder was a little more on the saltier side for me but still very delicious, and they gave a lot of fillings. It was meaty and hearty and definitely hit the right spots on a cold day. I also really like the sour dough bread the clam chowder comes in. The bread was more "sour" than I was used to but loved it since it went great with the heaviness of the chowder. I wish the outer layer of the bread bowl was more crispy but other than that the bread bowl was delicious and definitely worth trying. read more

Everytime we in Pismo, we always have to grab their clam chowder. It hits every time! Nice creamy, buttery taste with a plump little clam in almost every bite. It's even better in their bread bowls. I've alway had nothing but their creamy chowder. So this time, I decided to also grab fried calamari for my son, it came with fries. And then I grabbed myself a lobster roll since I noticed it was a weekday special and it just so happened to be Monday which made the lobster roll on sale for $15.95.. $2 off the usual price. Service was great. Even with the long lines out the door and them having to tend to an order non stop, they still did an amazing job. The place was packed! Inside and out.. even in the back near the restrooms it was people eating and waiting for their name to be called to get their food. There was even a line to the restrooms. Heard my name, got the food, headed to the Beach and ate there. The calamari and curly fries was just okay. Not the best I had. They gave me way more fries than calamari. Fries got cold quick. The lobster roll was not that good. It looks like small chunks of lobster mixed with what could be shredded up imitation lobster or crab. I would not get that again. The chowder as expected, was delicious! And it being in the bread bowl was even better! Overall I think this place is overrated. It's just good for their chowder. Usually I get the kids I'm with a treat and I was actually considering ordering more food but the guy working the register today was super rude. He was rude to my friend , me, and everyone before us in line. No idea what his problem is, usually the girls and other guys are super nice and have me reconsidering my options and if I should order more food lol but this guy was ready to go home or idk.. also I usually leave a tip and even if my friends that I come with don't tip I leave a tip enough for all us if the service took their time and explained all of our questions. My friends and I work in the restaurant industry so I really do try to show my gratitude it doesn't go unnoticed, him yelling across the restaurant to make sure I raise my hand when my name is called is not necessary. Probably one of the best clam chowders I've ever had! Getting curly fries to dip into it was such a great move as well. The contrast of the crispy fries and the creamy chowder really hits. There was quite a bit of a wait, as we decided to come here for Sunday brunch. But it's honestly what you'd expect from a popular spot! There was quite a bit of seating, but since so many people come here to eat, you'd might have to "camp" for a spot to sit. First time back to Pismo Beach in 5 years and we decided to visit our favorite local diner. The place still retained its beach shack casual vibe and was busy as usual. Luckily, we found a table in the back room (inside it has seating for around 50 people). The large menu on the wall showed all the items and their prices. We ordered the following: Lobster Roll: It was loaded with tender but firm texture shelled lobster meat, blended with very flavorful mayonnaise based dressing and celery bits. Fully Loaded Clam Chowder: The sourdough bowl bread was fresh and soft. The savory chowder was creamy, and yes, fully loaded with seafood bits of clams and lobster, and topped with bacon bits, green onion and cheese. Steamer: Clams were simmered in flavorful tomato base sauce. The plump and fresh clams were the smaller size type. It was a very nice meal, and it brought back all the good memories from our past trips to Central Coast. Highly recommended. read more

I've said it before and I'll say it again... this place is THE BEST for clam chowder! Nestled in the heart of Pismo, it's the perfect setting. The beach is just a few steps away, you're craving seafood as the night begins. This place is worth the stop. When you go in, it definitely has that seafood shack vibe. I love the fun clam cartoon decor. It's always been crowded when I go but you can usually find a spot. I always get the clam chowder bread bowl and top it with extra seafood. It never disappoints. The chowder is light and creamy... and best of all, filled with clams. I love the little topper bread they give you that's very toasted. Perfect for dipping! This place is a legend for a reason. I ordered clam chowder bowl( their award winning) but it's bit salty and very limited clams but the bread is very good. I have tried better chowder somewhere. My husband ordered fish and chips, it's alaskan cod and a bit chewy, but the curly fries is seasoned well. The service is good, nice servers. The area has a good vibes, plenty of sitting. We sat by the window overlooking beach. They have baked goods and merch as well. Only paid parking around the area, we were lucky to find one right away with left over time from previous car. read more
Came here for the obligatory social media clam chowder bowl. My partner said it was delicious I couldn't eat it because of health reasons. I got the fish tacos. The Baja taco is better than regular but that being said both were great. Two is plenty of food. I was so full. The ambiance is cute! Lots of bright beautiful colors. The reason I took one star off was the girl at the register. She seemed like she hated her job. Acted super annoyed we came to order anything. We got food once. We are here at Splash again! The line is so long as usual. The wait to get a table is like 15-20 minutes. We ordered the steamed clam, fish & chips, clam chowder. The clam chowder is as good as before. The clam itself is not as great and the garlic bread doesn't have much garlic taste. The fish, imo, over cooked a bit. Had a road trip from Socal to Norcal and as we passed by the city we've heard there's a popular clam chowder around the area so why not try it. When we came, cafe was fully packed and busy but food came fast. They are friendly and nice.. I ordered a hotdog and their clam chowder of course and would say it's really worth driving . My craving was so satisfied. Even my son who is so picky loved it.. Will definitely go back again once we visit Pismo Beach. read more

Do not be intimidated by the line that will be formed outside of this spot, I guarantee it will be well worth the wait! I am not a seafood eater so I went with the cashier's recommendation of the chicken avocado wrap and it was definitely the way to go for me. My friends got the clam chowder in the bread bowl and LOVED IT! They move very quickly and the quality of the food is great. Anytime I'm in the area, I have to get some Clam Chowder from Splash; it's one of my "happy places", and I always restock on their carrot hot sauce and seasonings. Small place to dine at, but it's right next to the beach. Service is at the front counter, and friendly staff. read more

Expect a line, but it's absolutely worth the wait! The line moves fairly quickly, and the payoff is huge. I stopped in for lunch to grab something for myself and a coworker, both of us craving clam chowder--and wow. Hands down the best clam chowder on the Central Coast. So delicious! read more

Super cute, diner‑style café with a walk‑up counter. On a busy Sunday like today, finding a seat can be a bit of a scramble -- the line was out the door and the place was fully staffed and buzzing. It's just steps from the beach, and the moment you walk outside you're greeted with a clear view of the ocean. Currently waiting on our chowder bowl and seafood salad. Update: the chowder was among some of the best chowder I've had, but that bread was definitely the best! The salad was delicious as well. Loads of crab and shrimp, had to hunt for the veggies but there were plenty as well! read more

Splash Cafe in Pismo Beach truly lives up to the hype when it comes to clam chowder--rich, flavorful, and absolutely delicious. It's the kind of chowder you crave long after your visit. Definitely the star of the menu! We also tried the fish taco and the chicken avocado wrap. Both had great flavor, but unfortunately, the tortillas were served cold, which took away from the overall experience. They felt a bit more Americanized than we expected, which might not be for everyone. Still, the clam chowder alone makes this spot worth visiting! read more

Per local recommendation we decided to go to the best place for clam chowder in town. The restaurant is conveniently located within walking distance of the pier. The ambient is very casual. Be prepared to wait as there are long lines. First you place your order and then find a place to sit. The wait was well worth it. The clam chowder is really good. I also sampled the lobster roll which was just ok for my taste. My daughter enjoyed her fried calamari and chips. In conclusion I would recommend Splash for the clam chowder. read more

Hands down the best clam chowder in town. This place went well above my expectations. I really wasn't expecting much but I really have to give it to them, their food was amazing. We ordered the clam chowder, lobster roll, and fries. Between the two of us, this was plenty of food. Clam chowder came out piping hot and it was so flavorful and thick like a true chowder. LOTS of clams, in every bite. The lobster roll was ok. Its like a lobster salad with something else mixed in (was not all lobster) but for $15, still a steal. Fries were hot and crispy, well seasoned. Friendly staff, clean restaurant. Parking is metered on the pier. 10/10, will visit again. read more

Best clam chowder I've ever had. Yes, it even beats SF clam chowder, I said it. Don't believe me? Go try for yourself! The clam chowder was perfectly creamy and thick and very clammy flavor. It definitely hit the spot we were craving while visiting Pismo. The lobster roll was amazing as well - specially for the price! Definitely recommend getting both. Yes they do, but I only remember seeing shirts and maybe caps
Open on New Year's Day?
Yes, they should open on New Year's Day - the last time I was there they were open.
Are dogs allowed In the outdoor dining area?
When I went in late Feb, I didn't see any outdoor seating. I saw some folks take their food to-go down to the beach. It's a couple minute walk away
Is the clam chowder bread bowl order equivalent to a cup or pint of clam chowder?

Does the lobster roll have real lobster? We ordered it and it came shredded and couldn't really taste any lobster.
I believe it's probably not fresh lobster. We thought the same it didn't taste like it had lobster in it
Do they take reservations for seating? If not, when is the best time to go to avoid long waits? We will be (hoping) going on a Friday if that makes a difference!
No, they don't take reservations! They are a counter-service restaurant. Any time that is not a typical meal time is probably the best time to go. Breakfast is usually less crowded than lunch/dinner, but their chowder is a must so up to you!
Are there any vegan options?
They have them now. A beyond meat backyard burger that is labeled vegan, a veggie burger that might be customizable to be vegan, bread, and fries. Probably can make a vegan taco with no protein alternatives. For vegetarians there is grilled cheese.… Read more
What is in the seafood topping? Is it real crab or imitation?
crab, extra clams, etc
Do they have gluten free options or jicama for tortillas?
Not that I have seen in regards to jicama. However, you can probably do a bun less hot dog, a lettuce wrapped burger, etc.
When is the best time to go?
They mostly busy from spring through the summer but if you go before 1130 or after 130, you should be ok.
Do they have a kids menu?
I don't think they have an actual kids menu, but there are plenty of options for kids: burgers, hot dogs, corn dogs (my daughter loved it!), chicken strips and fries. Great prices too!
Is it only seafood served here?
No... They also have burgers, fries, etc. I just happen to love seafood.
