Just off the beaten path and the hustle of what we lovingly call the "redneck riviera" is an unassuming eatery that you must check out. We were visiting the area for a much needed relaxing weekend, and didn't really want to fight the crowds and have to wait hours for a table somewhere. We found this cozy spot and ate dinner last night and came back for brunch today! The hamburgers (dinner last night) were amazing. Fresh, hot, juicy! Brunch was perfectly cooked eggs, fluffy biscuits and savory sausage gravy for me and a grilled chicken sandwich for the hubs. Not a morsel left on either of our plates! Full bar, cozy fireplace, and a beer wall (yes, a self serve beer wall) and full bar for your enjoyment. The staff was southern hospitality at its best. Attentive, smiling, warm and friendly! My family was visiting the Smokey mountains this past week and this place was recommended several times for locals so we made sure to check it out. Honestly, it exceeded our already high expectations. It all started by the staff who made us feel at home the moment we walked in. Split Rail was our second choice for lunch, but the first fell through because during the first week of August, downtown Gatlinburg is COMPLETELY INSANE!!! So off we went to the Arts and Crafts Community, and Split Rail is at the northern end, tucked away in a compact office park. A compact office park... with a pedestrian mall. It's hard to square what this physical space is, exactly, but for us it ends up being a place to eat lunch in peace, so I'm down. I got fish tacos, with slaw (unaware that the fish tacos themselves would have slaw on them), along with an oat milk iced latte. I would learn later that the fish tacos are cod; as it was, the fish was thinner than I expected. They tasted really good, but were closer to fish-flavored fried batter tacos with slaw. A thicker cut of fish would be appreciated. The cole slaw was mayo-based and reasonably thick, but spiked with some spaces to make it interesting. I was glad I ended up getting it as a side. I very much liked my latte, and added a teaspoon of sugar to round off the bitter flavor. For a good, quiet meal in an outdoor patio setting, Split Rail fits quite nicely. read more

We are always happy we stopped in here when we're in town. The last time we were in we noticed they've expanded- it's cozy and beautiful inside. We had a table near the cozy fireplace. Cool spot with good food! We stumbled upon this place during their re-grand opening. They had live entertainment which was nice and were doing raffles for gift baskets. It's located off of the main drag of Gatlinburg in the arts and crafts village. We were happy to find a place to eat that wasn't a long wait to get in. It's cafe style which was nice for our group of 6. The menu is displayed on a board and you just go directly to the counter to order and pay. They do bring the food directly to your table. The only downside to our visit was they were out of tortillas right at lunch time. Some of us had to quickly change our orders but we were all still happy with the food. I ordered the cheesesteak with Mac n cheese and my boyfriend went with the fried chicken and tater tots. My cheesesteak was on ciabatta bread yum and the meat was nice and juicy, not dried out and crunchy like some places. The Mac n cheese was good but nothing really special. I will mention that my niece ordered the cheese curds and they were perfection. The whole group loved them! We stayed in an Airbnb next to this restaraunt. We went there almost everyday during our visit. The employees were very nice, and the restaurant ambiance is so nice and relaxing. We got a couple things but I loved the steak n cheese and frozen margarita! If you are in the neighborhood or find this little gem stop by! We were told many times from others walking in or out that everything on the menu is good! My only issue is they close at 6pm. We would have loved to come through after our tournaments were over. I've never been to Gatlinburg before and I wasn't really sure what to expect. We got a hotel on the main drag and honestly it was just crazy crowded. Especially with everything going on with Covid, we wanted to escape the crowd. I found a recommendation for Split Rail Eats here on Yelp. We took a very scenic drive out to the restaurant and found some really cute shops as well. When we got there, this was how I envisioned Gatlinburg. Winding streets, beautiful trees, and quiet. The shop is super quaint and they were very good with social distancing and COVID restrictions. I was in the mood to piecemeal so I got the pimento cheese and the chicken fritters. The chicken fritters come with a really great sauce that just sets them off. The pimento cheese is awesome as well, and I love the fact that they serve it with dill pickles. That cuts right through the savory, rich cheese. We were able to eat outside on a gorgeous Tennessee afternoon, so that was a plus. They also sold spirits so my husband and I both indulged a little bit. You can tell that the owners of this place really care about it and their customers. I would 100% recommend split rail eats and will definitely make it a destination if we head back to Gatlinburg. read more

This place is on the Arts Loop in Gatlinburg. It was recommended to us by the instructor of the pottery class we took (shout out to Mike with Fowler Clay Works). The food was flavorful, unique, and as a vegetarian, I found many options available. I had the Greek veggie burger and fries, and the wife had the Greek tater bowl with her fries on the side. Both were sooooo good! We finished off with a piece of cake each (carrot cake and Italian lemon cream cake). SO FRICKEN' GOOD! The vibe in the place is nice too! Spacious and clean. Quite a unique experience and was not what I expected. The restaurant was clean and appeared fairly new. They had live entertainment. One person playing a guitar and another singing. Not a large crowd. Everyone seemed to be having a good time. When you walk in and on the back wall is a station with napkins, soft drink machines and condiments. To the left is a wall with the menu. Once you make your meal choice you approach the counter and place your order. If you decide on a beer to drink a beer, you will lend the cashier your credit card and they will give you a wristband that looks something like a watch. You will then be directed to a wall where there is a row of "self serve" taps. The cashier (kindly) helped me as this was a new concept, to me. I poured my beer into a semi-cold glass and seated myself. I ordered a cheeseburger, tater tots my spouse had the same. We shared fried pickles as an appetizer. The pickles promptly arrived, delivered by what appeared to be kitchen staff. Hand made, they were quite tasty. No complaints. Like the appetizer, the burgers arrived, via the kitchen staff. Unfortunately, order was wrong. It took three attempts to get it right. With the disappointments, the food was good. Well cooked, and not cold, as my burger probably had 100 yards of travel on it. In paying the beer tab, a tip was requested. This confused me as I didn't know who I was tipping and for what. I don't tip at Wendy's, McDonalds, or KFC. Nobody checked to see if our food or service was satisfactory. We served ourselves. What's the difference? I expected a traditional dining experience. This was closer to a fast food restaurant. Albeit a little more upscale. I tipped (someone) and learned a lesson. read more
