We rented a bike for 2 hours ($25 if you pay upfront) and it was so quick & easy to get started on our way! My bike was a bit older & the handles were kind of sticky but I got over it once I felt the wind in my hair! I came back & ordered the chickpea farro bowl which was very flavorful & filling. My boyfriend ordered the CA classic BLAT sandwich which he says was kind of greasy. The cafe is surprisingly clean despite the rustic garage atmosphere. Love love love! We rented bikes for an hour here before settling down for brunch. What a perfect way to welcome in the warm LA spring weather! The bike rentals were $15/hr and easy to get. The LA river path is just outside the store, so it was very easy to go out and back for an hour. Brunch was delightful - it's counter style ordering and the line is long, so it's worth joining early and figuring out what you want in line. It moves fast though. - Breakfast Burrito (vegan): (4/5) SO tasty. The flavors in the burrito were great. The vegan one comes with a tofu scramble instead of egg. The potatoes and other toppings in this were so flavorful and delish, and the salsa they give you is spicy and very tasty. My only wish is that the burrito were mixed/layered better. The tofu is all at the top and the potato/other toppings are at the bottom, so it took a while to get to the toppings and by that point I ate all the tofu. My friend who got it non-vegan felt the same way though she really enjoyed hers too. - Orange Ginger Cubano: (5/5) this was amazing! The ginger and orange flavors were quite strong but in a way I love. I had this with oat milk and iced. Overall this was a lovely environment for a Saturday morning brunch. I go out of my way to drop by Spoke when I'm anywhere in the area because in addition to having a unique menu and everything tasting great, it's also just a great hang. It's one of the few places that I can think of in LA where all different people like to hang out and it's got a great ambience and isn't pretentious. It's also a great place to bring someone when you want to show them something different. And you can tell people they'll even get to see the beautiful LA River, haha. Spoke is a casual outdoor cafe along the L.A. River bike path. It's a happening place that serves both cyclists and a broader Frogtown brunch crowd, at least on a sunny Saturday. I took my kids about a month ago, to meet up with their dad, who spent the morning on his bike. Spoke was busy, with a line to order and lots of people on its spacious patio. The vibe was colorful and fun, with art and umbrellas and string lights. The set-up was kid-friendly, though it did strike me that there were not nearly enough high chairs. We decided to be good citizens and wait until we had our order in before claiming one, only to get juked by another family who took the only two we saw available. Service was fast, friendly, and informal, with everything done through a couple of windows. There was alcohol, which was nice. We got draft beers with our lunch: the There Does Not Exist "Absent Origin," a hazy IPA from San Luis Obispo, and the Radiant Beer Co. "Harmonic Energy," a hazy pale from Anaheim. The food was okay and very expensive. I got the chicken bacon sandwich, which came with marinated chicken breast, smoked bacon, provolone, arugula, pickled red onions, and garlic aioli on Bub and Grandma's rustic sourdough. This was tasty enough, but pretty small for $18 before tax and tip, with thin, insubstantial strips of chicken. It did come with a side, and I liked the crispy potatoes. I also liked the waffle fries that came with my kids' grilled cheese. I'm a sucker for oyster mushrooms, so I got a side of those too, and they were kind of dry and chewy. I guess Spoke isn't my favorite restaurant, but it does serve its purpose quite well. After we ate, we enjoyed an hour along the river, our four-year-old biking with his dad while his little brother and I strolled and eventually came back to hang out at the cafe. I'd recommend this place if you want a pleasant spot to fuel up, especially if you're riding a bike. read more

Came here for a comedy show with some friends. The good: The ambiance here was super nice. There are a lot of tables all around though the ones in the back might make it hard to see. The comedy show itself was great, though the host was a little cringey. The actual acts were amazing. They have a wide selection of beers and some wines, along with coffee and some food items. The bad: the service was spotty. The lines to order were super long and it didn't really seem like the staff minded? Especially during the show, it was awkward to order beers as you were missing part of the show in the long wait time. Also, there was a sign in the bathroom that said it was happy hour, but we didn't receive happy hour pricing on anything nor was there any mention of what the actual prices of happy hour were. Also doing the cost benefit analysis on a bottle of wine v glasses or even pitchers of beers makes it seem like its not really worth it to order those. Bike shop in the back closes early at 5pm and they have trivia nights, networking mixers, and a variety of other events held here so lots of opportunities to come back! Gotta stop deluding myself into ordering the food here. Eventually enough time passes and I forget. "It's only a block away and there's lots of vegan options! I can't believe I don't eat here all the time!" I don't love the ambiance. It's too loud, uncomfortable seats. I live by the river so I don't need a business to facilitate my enjoyment of the LA river (5 stars for the river) My partner went to pick up our order and as usual the drinks were not ready--she said they forgot about her smoothie altogether. I got the veggie burger without aioli, and she got the kale Caesar. she seemed pretty underwhelmed with her food. My burger was trash. The bun was stale, the tempeh bacon was greasy, and the patty was about the size of a Reese's cup. Ok ok but their waffle fries should make up for the disappointment right? WRONG! Stale, cold, and basically crumbs. They've been great in the past, but truly I believe even a fast food restaurant would've chucked that batch and given us something fresh instead. Ungodly expensive for what they actually served. I respect that they seem to care about compensating their people fairly, and would be willing to pay the you know $20 or whatever for a mediocre veggie burger, if only it was good enough to be considered mediocre. The London fog was good, and my partner said she liked her watermelon smoothie. So MAYBE I'll go back for drinks, but I think this was the last straw for food. Frogtown deserves better. read more

I very nice place that I would give 4.5 stars. My wife and I came here with some family after taking a nice walk along the bike/walking path that runs along the L.A. River. For lunch, I had the Spoke burger that came with lettuce, heirloom tomato, bacon, cheddar cheese, and pickled onions. It tasted very good, and the waffle fries that came with garlic aioli on the side made for a great lunch. My wife loved her chicken bacon sandwich and would order it again. Since the bike path is only steps away, there is plenty of space to patk your bike while you grab something to eat or drink. Probably the best day of 2024 so far. One of my favorite humans and I took a 30 mile bike ride. We stopped at Highalnd Park brewery when we made it downtown, and hit Spoke on our way back. I've passed this spot so many times on the LA river path but finally popped my cherry and I'm so glad I did! Amanda was so sweet. She helped me decide between Beer-Booch, and the Lavendar Lemonade beer. The lemonade was calling my name that day, and it was surprisingly delicious! We also snacked on chips/salsa/and guacamole! Went there for breakfast. Nice spot. The guy who took our order was too cool for school. I got the breakfast bun, with avocado no meat and no cheese. The flavor was OK but the brioche bun was a disaster. Super thick and stale. I removed most of it out. I got a side of crispy potatoes, they were delicious. I came here because I read somewhere on Reddit that they had the BEST BLT in LA. Stay tuned... Came here for brunch around 11am on a saturday. The line for ordering was about 6 people deep which seems short but it actually took about 15 minutes. I ordered the California BLAT w/ waffle fries and a canned orange wine, and my husband ordered the PB&J with a side a bacon and a sort of specialty iced coffee with mushrooms (forgot the name), and my dog ordered the grilled chicken. California BLAT was absolutely delicous. The bread was hearty, the tomatoes juicy, the lettuce and bacon crispy, and the avocado fresh. However, I do prefer a mayo heavy BLT whereas this had a more acid forward sauce. The waffle fries were perfection though- crispy exterior and fluffy interior. My canned orange wine ended up not being what I ordered. My husband grabbed everything while I sat with our dog. And the beverage I received was a Lemon Spritz instead, which I didn't notice until after I had opened the can and tasted it. Too late to say something unfortunately. My husband LOVED the PB&J. He doesn't typically talk/care about food but he did not stop raving about it, saying he could eat that every day. My dog loved the grilled chicken of course. Us cyclists, we ride to eat! And one of the most popular places to go around LA is Spoke. It's bike-friendly (complete with a bike shop and mechanic), and the food and drinks are delicious. Today I had the avocado toast with egg added on top, and boy did I miss having this, especially a good one! Last time I had an avocado toast at another coffee shop, it left me disappointed, so I'm happy that Spoke's version is just full of goodness and flavor. It's filling but not heavy, flavorful but not overseasoned, and it just works! Best breakfast burrito in Los Angeles hands-down. Service is spectacular. It's owned by a actual person not a corporation and the vibe is so lovely on weekdays when it's a little slower. I tend to avoid weekends as it's more of a hotspot and super crowded in the mornings. The owner is absolutely wonderful if there is a mistake to any order and I will always remember that. Chicken Bacon Sandwich: 8/10 The sandwich came very hot with melted cheese everywhere. I got it on a bun instead of the signature bread. The sandwich was loaded with fresh ingredients. The chicken breast wasn't too dry and was a pretty decent sized breast. Sadly, the cheese wasn't that strong. I wanted it to come through a bit more so maybe if they used a sharper cheese. Although there was a lot I couldn't really taste it. Having some greens was nice but there was so much butter arugula some bites were fully bread and arugula. The bacon was obviously a great touch. Overall the sandwich was pretty decent! I would just use a sharper cheese and tone down the arugula and up the amount of aioli. I highly recommend this especially with the crispy waffle fries. There was nothing going on here this morning. Just a quiet late morning, one of the hosts was super chatty with the girl sitting next to me, and there was no hustle-bustle to be seen. Twice I went up to the counter to ask what was going on with my order. At no point did anyone acknowledge or apologize for the ridiculous wait. Finally get my order- avocado toast with an egg, over medium- and the bread isn't toasted and the egg is barely a shade north of sunny side up. No time to address it, now I'm late for work. What should've been a 20 minute stop was more approaching an hour. Seems like long waits are part of the deal here, because although I can't recall specific details, I know I've had similar experiences at Spoke in the past. Today was just that final straw. The restaurant portion is very casual-- you order at the counter and they have a large variety of breakfast and lunch options, coffees, and alcoholic drinks, all reasonably priced. I came on a Sunday for lunch, and there were some open tables and the food was ready within 20 minutes. I got the orange creamsicle latte which was absolutely delicious, along with a grilled cheese and fries-- the waffle fries are a must! The atmosphere is very lively and all the seating is outdoors, but it's covered with some fans. You can rent a bike to bike the LA river path too.
