The best aspect of this restaurant was outdoor seating on a beautiful late spring night. The food was not good. The pasta dishes were overcooked and bland. Our table shared a carafe of overpriced "sangria," if you can call it that. It tasted like overly sweet fruit punch. I don't think there was any alcohol in it, and there certainly wasn't fruit in it. Went Saturday evening. Love their outdoor space, but unfortunately the restaurant was very under-staffed Saturday evening. The poor server was very kind, but it took forever for anyone to come to our table, and then later it was a little unclear whether she even noticed that one of our kids' meals didn't come out until 10-15 mins. after everyone else's meals. They also forgot our appetizer until our food came out and we asked about it. We did order the app the same time we ordered our entrees, but it was only the house bread, so it wasn't a long prep time item. Stopped in tonight and ordered their (Thursday night) paella for two. It was absolutely delicious. A generous portion, lots of seafood, and perfectly spiced. The owner brought out Tabasco (just in case), and it wasn't needed as the jalapenos provided the right amount of heat. Amy, our server, was attentive and charming, and the owner checked on us several times. We've eaten here several times and have never had a bad meal or poor service. My time at Spoleto was in a word, exquisite. I was on a first date with my now wife, and I have to say that our marriage is partially due to the great service, and the meatball duo, which was perfect for our duo :) It was salty and I could taste that the cut of meat used was from a cow that had a good life. Hostess was so friendly and made us feel so welcome. The bartender made drinks so strong we considered eloping lol. The ambiance was like if Italy was picked up and placed in Western Massachusetts. Casual elegance, superior service, and delicious food works very well for a romantic evening.Dishes are individually prepared with fresh ingredients, so have a cocktail while you wait- you won't be disappointed. Bartenders here know how to make the a good martini, and they also know and stock excellent wine and beer. We love oysters, and Spoleto's always has them, perfectly prepared. My co-worker and I came here on a bustling Thursday evening, our last night in Northampton on our business trip. We had heard good things about Spoleto, so we decided to make this the finale to a series of great dinners in Northampton. As I said, the restaurant was quite busy, although we didn't have to wait and got shoehorned into a two person high top table directly across from the bar. The restaurant had a warm and comfortable palate of oranges and reds , with a mix of booths, banquettes and tables. The bar behind us was impressively stocked, although the area was quite high traffic, especially when other patrons were standing around waiting for tables to open up. The crowd was noticeably older than other restaurants we had been to in Northampton, but it wasn't the early-bird type of crowd either. Our waitress was quick to start us off with some drinks and we ordered some brick oven meatballs to start while we waited for our mains. While I was tempted by the wild boar pappardelle, I ended up settling on the gnocchi which won me over with it's description of house-made potato gnocchi with oyster and shitake mushrooms, guanciale, shallots, fresh lemon, pecorino romano, and topped with a poached Feather Ridge Farm egg. There was no resisting this dish. The meatballs arrived after a short wait, and we eagerly dug into them. Made of a pork and beef blend, in a slightly spicy marinara sauce, they were nicely browned but still moist, and had a little bit of zing to them. The marinara also made for a great dipping sauce for the plentiful bread that flowed our way. Now that I had some meat and carbs, I was primed to eat more meat and carbs. The gnocchi came piping hot from the kitchen, which helped me slow down my eating of it, which kept me from exploding from potato pasta goodness. The gnocchi was soft and pillowy, and soaked up the slightly sweet sauce of onions, mushrooms and olive oil, and the egg yolk added another level of richness to the dish. It was quite filling despite the lack of large amounts of protein. With attentive service and good Italian food, Spolteo is a winner, unless you're a local student that doesn't want to run into their professor at dinner. read more

I am so disappointed. We spent $78.00 with tip. 2 mocktails, 1 salad and 2 pasta dishes and bread. Food was ok. Bread came with ricotta cheese sitting in oil... whose idea is this? No flavor. The bread was very good. Salad was good. My mushroom pasta had no spice or flavor. My daughters crazy Alfredo was good. It's Covid times and a lot of places in Northampton have outdoor dining but the tables are a little too close. Patio at Spoleto was good for distance and the protocols they have in place for ordering and serving food are good... but we left pretty quickly after dinner once a bunch of young people started coming in for drinks-- masks were suddenly nowhere to be found and people were up roaming between tables and dancing and greeting each other (one girl went to the bathroom without hers and someone said something and she was like "I have no idea where it is LOL". Some old drunk dude also went to the bar window to order a beer and was leaning into it and talking all over all the stuff in the window (no mask). No one that worked there called any of these people on this total lapse of protocol and it got really annoying to watch and be around so we left. read more

I consider Spoleto to be my rock-steady back-up when it comes to Northampton. I love it for its convenient location right smack in the middle of Main Street, and right around the corner from Turn It Up, Sergio's favorite record shop. I will often walk across the street to enjoy a cocktail at the bar while waiting for Sergio to browse. It is only open for dinner though, so it has to be a 5 pm drink or later. Spoleto also has a really nice pre-fixe menu that always delivers. Though the food can be a bit common place, it will fill your belly. And with a little something for everyone on the menu, it's usually a crowd pleaser. From time to time, the service has been a little off, but its not meant to be a fine dining atmosphere, so I never mind too much. Last time, there was a new young girl training to be a bartender, and she, as well as her trainer, were both polite and attentive, while not being obtrusive. Overall, a good spot to have a nice dinner while going easy on the wallet. read more

My friends and I went on a Friday night in January for a nice, casual dinner. The atmosphere was intoned good service and classy menus under the dim lights. Food was very satisfying for the 3-for$23 meal; I had the lobster ravioli, mixed grill meats, cannoli, and a glass of chardonnay. The ravioli was delicious and I was eager for the entree. However my main dish was slightly over-cooked; the meats were more medium than rare (I like mine medium rare) and the potatoes were a bit dry. Still good overall, and the cannoli was a sweet finish. We had not been to Spoleto's since they moved down the street so decided to give them a go. For the table we ordered the 'All' Artisinal Salumi and Formaggio plate and it was excellent. No lardo was a bonus. Additionally, the warm bread and (housemade?) ricotta/olive oil was very good. We went to Spoletos for Mother's Day, expecting to see the menu from the website, but instead found a cinco de mayo menu that had little options for one of our party members who had a lot of allergies. Alexa, our waitress, did everything she could to make sure that the kitchen could make her something she could eat. We were so appreciative of her help and attentiveness. She brought me tastes of two different wines when I could not make up my mind, too, which I really appreciated. Spoletos has always been one of my favorite restaurants in Northampton. I'm afraid to say that we felt that the quality wasn't to par this time. My rigatoni bolognese, which is usually rich and meaty was nothing more than a basic meat sauce. We were a large party celebrating my son's graduation, and we needed a restaurant with outdoor seating. With few other appealing options, we settled on Spoleto, despite a previous negative experience there. We suspected we were in trouble when we arrived and told the young hostess we had a reservation for a party of 11; without even glancing at the reservation log, she said, "Um, I think we can do that." Three young staff members then pushed two long picnic tables together, creating a space that could have accommodated a couple of dozen people but left one end of our combined table far away from the other. Failing to get anyone's attention, we took it upon ourselves to move one of the long tables and replace it with a smaller, unused table that was nearby, and then taking two unoccupied chairs from another nearby table. After we waited about 20 minutes, a rather harried waitress appeared with empty water glasses, promising she'd be right back with two pitchers of water. Twenty minutes after that (after one parched member of our party went to the bar to get a glass of water), our waitress reappeared to take our drink and appetizer orders, whereupon we reminded her of her promise to bring us water. Ten minutes later she came back with a single pitcher of water, explaining that the restaurant seemed to have only five pitchers on the premises, and the other four were in use. Each subsequent interaction with the wait staff compounded our frustration and annoyance, as we had to wait interminably long for delivery of drinks, apps, and entrees, which were delivered sporadically instead of all at once (it seems the kitchen lost our ticket after they made the margherita pizza and Caesar salad that two members of our party wanted to share). Several times, individual members of our party felt motivated to march to the hostess station or to the kitchen to inquire about the status of our orders and to voice our displeasure. The wait staff and hostess were clearly overwhelmed and undertrained, resembling deer in the headlights whenever one of us approached. As for the food, the apps were good, especially the calamari, as was the ricotta/EVOO mixture that came with the bread (which we had to ask for); the margherita pizza was also very good. But everything else was mediocre. The Caesar salad had only minimal dressing. The pasta special I ordered was nothing special. Toward the end of our meal the owner came over and apologized, telling us this is the hardest year he's had in the 37 years he's owned the place. He comped us for our drinks and proceeded to bus our table quickly and efficiently -- a skill he seems to have neglected to teach his staff. But we don't blame the staff for our disastrous meal. The bottom line is Spoleto has far too many tables for too few staff members to service adequately. And nothing seems to have improved in the year since we last tried to dine at Spoleto, when we were shown to an outdoor table before being entirely ignored for the next 30 minutes, prompting us to leave. You can bet we won't be going back to Spoleto. At least it was a nice evening to sit outdoors. read more

Avoid this place. I don't go out of my way to post reviews but after making the mistake of going to Spoleto I'd like to save anyone who might read this from wasting their money on REALLY BAD food. We made the mistake of "dining" here for my teenage daughter's birthday dinner and even the teens immediately remarked, unprompted, that the food was just not good at all. I couldn't help but think that this restaurant is a good example of wasted kitchen resources, location, etc., --- and could use a Gordan Ramsay "Kitchen Nightmares" makeover. read more

Spacious, delicious and friendly covered outdoor dining without noisy traffic. Prices very fair. The most tasty item loved by all was the sumptuous lobster quesadilla. Owner is involved and actively concerned for the good cheer to be had by all. Excellent free and safe parking adjacent to dining area. Very dog friendly. Disposable dishes and safe table spacing promotes safety and cozy space for couples. Our favorite evening spot in Northampton!! Just to let everyone know I've been working in the restaurant industry for a very long time. It was my first time trying this restaurant. The food was a solid 3/10. Reason being is, the bread was pretty good and made up for the mediocre food. Experience was a solid 2/10. The host was extremely unfriendly and unwelcoming. The waiter and waitress did the best to their ability. However, there needs to be more training and communication. We sat next to a couple that waited over 20 minutes for bread. What a mediocre meal! I haven't eaten here in years and I was looking forward to it. First the good news- the salmon was good. The veggies with it were boring. Butter was the main flavor. The pasta with eggplant was beyond disappointing. Eggplant Al dente, meh. Not enough of the other vegetables listed in the menu. The sauce tasted like it came from a jar. And it took forever to order and forever and a day to get the food (despite the serving saying it was coming right up about midway through the wait. I was excited that Spoleto was open in the pandemic for their patio and take-away. We did take-away. My partner's pasta shells were, well, meh. My chicken parm was dry, tasteless, and the pasta and marinara sauce was bland. The vegetables were soggy and salty and they got our deserts wrong. Somehow tiramisu became chocolate mousse. I don't know what's so hard about this, they had a take-away restaurant once, and usually, they're tip-top. But this was an epic waste of money. read more

My first visit, good cocktails, meatball appetizer hit the spot, warm crusty bread with house-made ricotta is excellent, and the pear salad was perfectly balanced with great texture. So, I'm always a "glass is half-full" kinda food critic. I think all places has some good qualities and I usually never base my entire judgment on one particular bad experience. This restaurant, however, is the exception to my rule. Please keep in mind that this was based on one REALLY BAD experience, so don't let it persuade you completely. Furthermore, I will preface the review by saying that I have heard from my peers who tried this restaurant and they said this place was "ok," it wasn't earth-shattering, but it was certainly nice. So, let's talk about the PROS: it looks really nice, the decor has a nice, elegant (albeit expensive) appearance that makes you immediately for your wallet to see if you brought enough $20s to pay for your meal. Albeit, you'll be spending most of that time dwelling on those thoughts as you wait over 40 minutes for a table. CONS: Looking beyond the overpriced, generic tasting Italian food, I'd like to state the service (our particular waiter) was absolutely atrocious! We came to the restaurant on a busy Saturday night, and waited longer than any of the patrons who came after us. In fact, by the time our food had arrived (smaller portions than other groups who ordered the same dish), all of our neighbors who came after us had already finished their meals. Furthermore, the waiter got 2 of our dishes completely wrong, and when we tried to reason with him, he actually blamed US for being rude. As icing for the terrible cake that is Spoleto, since I had waited 40 minutes for my $20 pasta, my appetite was already quelled by the numerous baskets of gratuitous bread. So I specifically (and politely) requested to take my meal to go. After 10 more minutes, the waiter came back with our check, and had thrown away my dinner! When I confronted him, he simply said that I had not mentioned about taking my dinner to go, and upon further confrontation, he asked the chef to bring a new meal, which took only FIVE MINUTES! We left that restaurant dumbfounded, for I've never had a worse dinner experience in my entire life. read more

From the beginning of our experience, the bar was set pretty low. I'm not sure I've ever been greeted by a hostess who mentions that she's recently had a miscarriage...! After processing that--which we had a long time to do, as it took our waiter quite a few minutes to introduce himself in this half-full restaurant--we were greeted with a blackboard of specials. The waiter either didn't know how to read or felt that he couldn't adequately explain them in full detail, as we had a one-word description of each. We read the specials ourselves in the low lighting. I was then served some beer in a chipped glass before dinner began. Appetizers and salads weren't too bad, but the entrees were a huge disappointment. My special, the shrimp "loco" alfredo quoted as a spicy chili powder alfredo. I ended up with mostly green peppers and sausage, making this more of a stroganoff than anything. The rest of the table was also disappointed with their choices from the menu. Too much spice on the beef tips (wish I had that problem!), bland salmon. Most of this time, the waiter was absent and didn't clear dishes before the next course was served. Lastly, the waiter couldn't be bothered to provide a drink menu with deserts. Asking for the port, I was told, "Oh, they're right up there behind you on the bar." Guess this place thrives on self-service. Deserts were good--probably the best course of the evening--but pretty much thrown across the table to each of us. A combination of poor service and average fare make this an 'established' Northampton restaurant to avoid. read more

I have never had a bad meal or a bad drink at Spoleto. Everything is either spot on, or a near miss. I am not sure I would really called Spoleto's an Italian restaurant. I would say it is Italian influenced. You will find a lot of different seafood and grilled items on the menu. Overall, the menu is one of the best things about this place. It's interesting. For me I have had consistently fair service here. Its never been bad, but it never blows you away either. Occasionally, you will need to wait a while for a drink here also. Not sure why that is ... Spoleto's can get busy. Since it has been around a long time a lot of people know about it. I would put it in the top tier of restaurants for Noho and close to or on par with some of my favorites like Eastside Grill and Sierra Grill. Anyway, its worth checking out and its worth a 4 star rating for me. I have been here several times ...and that is an endorsement on its own. read more
