My wife and I eat out a lot and we have been coming to Spoleto for years and have never had a bad meal. However, I have not been in Northampton since Covid. Everyone seems to understand that Covid has changed so many things so I was concerned about what may have happened with Spoleto. We came in last Sat night and in talking with the owner, we were warned that only two of the wait staff showed up due to illness. We sat down and witnessed two people work the entire place with amazing efficiency and a smile. Our dinner was excellent ...as it always is. I love this place because they have always paid strong attention to detail. Covid has definitely changed some things that are beyond all of our control. Probably the most noticeable change is that a lot of customers have become whiny, impatient and entitled Karens. And this can make a place seem like it is doing worse than it really is. Lovely outdoor seating area. Delicious appetizers. I think a bit over-priced considering that you don't even get a basket of bread on your table. What I did NOT like was the fact that I had leftovers and a dessert packed to go and we accidentally left them on the table as we left. In less than 5 minutes we realized we forgot the leftovers and ran back immediately. The leftovers and uneaten dessert had already been thrown out!!! I Who does this?? They couldn't have held on to it for at least 15 minutes?!!!. I made my daughter ask for a new dessert to go, otherwise they offered nothing. Will not be back. read more

Had a fantastic margarita , Clase Azul , really smooth and decadent tequila. Loved the shrimp scampi , Spicy meatballs also Well received. Service is attentive , friendly & warm . We really want to love this place because it's local. We've been here twice before and it's not been a great experience. 3rd times a charm? Unfortunately not for this place. Our server was great attentive helpful with the wine. Love that. Ordered the calamari. It was cold and we sent it back. 2nd time around it was cold we sent it back. Word to the wise don't order the brick oven calamari. Ordered the house bread and it was absolutely overdone, like a brick. We also ordered the crab cake appetizer and it was average. The wine was great. But then it came out of a bottle and they don't make it there. So disappointing. We live in Northampton and really want to love this place. Came in with a big party late one night and was seated outside on a picnic style table. My only gripe is the table feels much too high for the seat height. Kind of like being a little kid at a table built for adults. Regardless, we had many starters all of which were quite good, drinks that were served promptly and of course our entrees. Ordered a $12 burrata caprese and it was basically three tiny slices of cheese next to giant slabs of mediocre tomato. The pizza tasted like the frozen ones I buy from Trader Joe's. Honestly one of the worst dining experiences I have had recently. My family waited 45 minutes for a table which is understandable given the constraints at the time as the outdoor area was largely unavailable due to some rain. That said, we waited in the outdoor area 45 minutes under an umbrella. When finally seated we were served by a friendly server who was either too busy due to understaffing for the evening or just unable to coordinate even service. Everything took a long time to arrive, came without the requisite plates or serving utensils and was, to be honest, just awful. My wife ordered a vodka soda but the soda was flat so it was just vodka water. When that was sent back she asked instead for just a glass of pinot grigio which came warm. The garlic bread app was good but we had no plates initially on which to eat it nor any additional napkins. The calamari was underdone. The main plates were next level bad. Firstly, they were cold. They had obviously been sitting quite a long time. We had five plates of different types of pasta and they were all bad. Flavorless sauces seemingly devoid of any spice or herbs. I really suspect it may have been jarred sauces. Even the parmesan in the dish looked and tasted like the stuff you get on the supermarket shelf in the green cardboard cylinders. I get that many establishments may be struggling with service right now. That is a fact. However, if that is the case then please don't seat us next time. We would have preferred to enjoy a meal elsewhere rather than be experience something like this again. We of course did not take this out on our server who is, likely, largely blameless but I cannot strongly enough urge potential customers to look elsewhere until this establishments improves its offerings and service. read more

This has now become a restaurant to actively avoid. The food had devolved into cafeteria food at hysterically overpriced prices. The salads are no better than airport salads. The pasta is overcooked mush tossed with gobs of salt to make you think it's flavorful. Despite being a more than 20 year customer of owner Claudio Guerra's restaurants, he rudely made clear that he didn't want to "waste" an outdoor table on us, to the point that we ended up leaving. Sad to see that on a more recent visit that things have gone incredibly downhill... Ordered the calamari appetizer, which had good flavor and a crispy breading toit, but was definitely on the overcooked and rubbery side. The real bummer was the experience with the entrée special of the night: rack of lamb with shallot risotto and salsa Verde.. The rack of lamb came out in three completely different sized chops ranging from 1 inch in thickness to 3 inches in thickness and, unfortunately, all three were incinerated to a dry gray well done. The consistency of the risotto was fluffy like a pilaf with shallots that were still half raw. The side of vegetables look like something that came fresh out of a freezer bag and steamed. The "salsa Verde" was basically a mint oil, which was very confusing given the name. I guess in all fairness it was a sauce and it was green. :-) I sent it back and went with the mushroom ravioli instead, which was nothing shy of pre-fabricated/frozen raviolis. It's a shame that a pasta house doesn't make any of their pasta fresh in house, or so it seems. read more

Good food. Good size adult portions but kids pasta was small. Dinner salads came out 45 minutes before the rest of the food. Our waitress was helpful but had to be reminded about moving us out of the rain. Not a huge deal. We ate outside and it was loud, but you could still hear your group at the table. And our kids probably added to the noise, so no complaints. Food was SLOW ... over an hour... but we had a big party, so maybe that's why. read more

The salads came and when we asked the server about the other appetizer he said, "It's not up yet." What happened to serving everyone at once? The pork milanese was tough. However, we ordered the house bread and it was still frozen when we received it. When our pizza came out, I found a piece of plastic label mixed in with the melted cheese. It was disgusting. Spoleto has been a fixture in downtown Northampton for decades. Together with Joe's Pizza and Spaghetti House, located just a couple hundred yards down the street from Spoleto, they're where to go in town when you're in the mood for Italian. Although not nearly a "fine dining" establishment, Spoleto is a bit more upscale than Joe's and has the advantage in these times of the pandemic of a lot more outdoor space. Indeed, they've moved the whole operation outside into an adjacent large parking lot, which they've spruced up with gravel underfoot, a few potted plants, umbrellas and awnings for shade, and an eclectic mix of outdoor furniture. While still looking a bit scruffy and shabby -- it is, after all, just tables and chairs in a parking lot -- the outdoor dining space provides patrons with a great view of the scrum of pedestrians and traffic passing by. Several companions and I went to Spoleto for an early dinner on a warm, late summer evening recently. The outdoor dining area was crowded, but we were seated quickly. You may have read that restaurants these days are having trouble attracting workers and thus are chronically short-staffed, but that's evidently not a problem at Spoleto, which was teeming with servers, assistant servers, servers in training, bussers, cleaners, etc. Service was not a problem; in fact it was excellent. The food, however, is another story. The menu at Spoleto has always been pretty limited, but it seems to have shrunk even more since the last time I was there pre-pandemic. This is not necessarily a bad thing. But check the menu online before you go to make sure there's something on it you'll want to order. I got the spaghetti and meatballs, which were a disappointment. The pasta was cooked as I like it -- completely tender (none of that crunchy, "al dente" nonsense) but not mushy. But it tasted flat -- the water it was cooked in could have used more salt. The tomato sauce had a good consistency that coated the pasta well, but it too was underseasoned -- might as well have been crushed tomatoes straight out of a can. The meatballs were hard little buggers -- tough and dry. They could have been made last week, frozen, and then microwaved back to life (and I use that term loosely) before being plopped on top of the spaghetti. My Caesar salad starter -- some lightly dressed romaine lettuce, a few croutons out of a bag, and a sprinkle of parmesan cheese -- wasn't bad, although hardly a good value at $7. One of my companions ordered a cheese pizza, which turned out to be an exercise in minimalism. The crust was as thin as parchment (but it had a good chew). It was topped with the merest blush of tomato sauce and a light, powdery dusting of cheese. If you get distracted while eating a slice, you may wonder if you ate anything at all. Other entrees, like shrimp scampi and a special of shellfish and tasso ham -- a Cajun departure from the otherwise Italian-American focus of the menu -- were perfectly okay, if nothing to write home about. I must commend the bread you can order to accompany your dinner (it costs extra) -- it was excellent with a chewy crumb and a slight sourdough tang. Portions at Spoleto, neither skimpy nor generous, are ... adequate. But prices are quite high. Figure on $25-$30 per person just for your food, not including drinks, dessert, tax, or tip. If the weather's nice and you've got friends or family you want to take out for dinner, I'd recommend Spoleto, unless you want spaghetti and meatballs, which I'll bet you could make better at home. read more

Ambiance was great as I entered, but that was one of the only redeeming factors. Service was subpar from the waitress who was severely underdressed especially since it was Valentines Day. Prices were through the roof including a lack of complimentary bread which is a staple at every other Italian Restaurant. We were left unattended with empty drinks for a considerable amount of time. An hour passed after ordering before we received food, and the portions were extremely small considering the price. The food was good, but It felt more like an appetizer. The appetizer took forty minutes to come and the actual food another thirty. Food: The food is definitely not worth it. The mashed potatoes had no salt. The steak was burnt. The pasta tasteless. The drinks were really mid too. No because how do you mess up a mojito? Well Spoleto has the answer. The food was absolutely not worth my money and I left unsatisfied. Food severely overpriced too. Please don't come here you'll be disappointed. Weather: NORTH POLE. No heater whatsoever. They left us in the cold and we had to survive with a tiny flame of a candle. read more

My mom and I had dinner there last night and we had a delicious and beautiful dinner! The crusty bread was warm and served with homemade ricotta cheese, they make in-house. The wine list has a nice variety of choices. Mom enjoyed a cocktail while I had a glass of red wine. We both had fish for dinner. She had Cod with farro and spinach and the flavors were well balanced and spiced just right. I had grilled Salmon with mashed potatoes and julienned veggies which were all cooked perfectly. Also, the music was very nice and soft in the background. It was a quiet dining atmosphere, even though the restaurant was full = relaxing and nice. Our server was friendly and our meal wait-time wasn't long at all. The atmosphere is pretty and a great place to go for a nice dinner in Northampton with family or on a date. The service for dinner last Saturday was terribly slow . We sat for 15 min without seeing wait staff , no drink orders were taken . We then ordered margaritas , they had no taste or alcohol in them . Next drink order with dinner was a beer .. The dinner meal , shrimp scampi was another flop . The portion size was very, very small . Typically for 22$ ( I think ) especially pasta I have enough left over for lunch the next day . The portion was so small, I ate all of it , was still hungry and we got big sundaes on the way home . Went here recently after not being for a couple years. It was AWFUL! I ordered cod picatta and it was super dry. Not a drop of sauce on it and the fish was all broken up. It came with greens that were way too salty to eat. I sent it back and the waiter did not look surprised! Next I tried the chicken parm. Sounds easy! The waiter was literally back with my new meal in under a minute. He said they have those popular meals ready. Well it was horrible!! Felt like it had been cold in the fridge and they just warmed it slightly. The cheese was still stiff and hard. At least they could have thrown more sauce on it to hide it. Sent that back too and told the waiter I was done. He totally understood. We will never go again! read more

Went here with my parents and my sisters dog. They let you sit outside with a dog which is great! Shrimp scampi was pretty good. Wild boar ragu was real good. The clam pasta stuff I didn't try because I don't like clams but my dad liked it a lot so great! The calamari appetizer was a little over cooked but the flavor and breading was really yummy. I did order a drink (revelation?) and it was ok. I can't say why but it just didn't spark joy like Marie kondo has been trying to get me to do. Anyways, it's worth going to for dinner. I dislike having to write a negative review but believe I must warn others. This restaurant is NOT good. So many other better choices in Northampton. They will not be around much longer with such a lack of attention to quality in almost every aspect. They clearly do not care. Maybe the bar is where they make their money? We didn't order anything from the bar. The good: -Our waitress was fantastic. -The dessert was good, though not served with fresh fruit as described. I highly doubt it was made in-house. The bad: -The table was dirty. Hardened stuck on food. Yuck. -The restaurant is shabby. -No soap in the bathroom. The container was a mess, broken, and empty. Gross. -The food was not good. *The garlic bread was tiny and drowning in butter and some strange gummy cheese. $8. *The calamari was not served as described. Basically a handful of calamari thrown on a plate with a small dish of marinara. $15. *The "large" Summer Salad is small with only lettuce, some shredded carrot, a few tomatoes and a couple of chickpeas. $12. *The Pasta Shells entree was practically inedible. I didn't eat after a few bites. $20. *The chicken parm was mediocre at best. $19 * The dessert was good but not served with fresh fruit as described. $8. *Sodas were flat and no refill offered. $3 each. -Way overpriced. We dropped $100 and left hungry and shaking our heads. We will gladly pay for good food but here we unanimously felt like taken advantage of. Dined outdoors, and devoured absolutely yummy scallops, accompanied by the goat cheese, cranberry and walnut salad, and the tomato and mozzarella appetizer with warm bread. Our waitperson, Christina, was attentive and sweet, and although quite busy, was timely in taking our order, all the while checking in frequently! The host, Adarrah, was also extremely thoughtful and charming; arranging for a quieter table away from the street, to ensure our comfort, and even apologized they could not get us closer to a firepit. I came to this restaurant last month to celebrate Father's Day..... Frozen strawberry margarita pitcher is a disaster hardly had any strawberry mix, worst margarita in my life! I ordered a chicken broccoli pasta dish and the broccoli was super hard, the chicken dry as a bone and it was a "thigh" people!!!! so that means they cooked the life out of that thigh until it was dehydrated! overcooked and the pasta sauce disgusting. Only good thing was the fried clams strips.. I would never visit this place again. Good luck too you! Don't waste your money overpriced as well for such a horrible food! And don't even ask for the bread you might need dentures after trying to bite into it, about an inch of crust.. did someone forget the bread in the oven? read more
