Went to here a few times in the past when I still lived in San Ramon, California. This place is supposed to be like a Dick's Sporting Goods but with more variety of sports equipment and other related products. As well as better quality since it's like a private owned business and not a public one. The service overall was good at this place as the employees were helpful with guiding us to find stuff we were looking for. As well as helping my brother find a new bike for him to ride after his old one fell apart. When it comes to value that is where the problems set in as to why I am giving this place a 4/5. Lot of the stuff in this store is expensive and I do mean EXPENSIVE. It could be close to like 120 dollars for a pair of shoes which seems to be way more than most other retailers. And most of the other equipment could range up to 200-300 dollars as well which can make it frustrating to figure out what to spend your money on depending on the need. At least the store has plenty of equipment to choose from, as well as a range for you test stuff out and other useful features for equipment you want to rent. But I would only go here as a last resort if you can't go to a Dick's or find good pricing. read more

Amazing store, great service, and Puma, Mario and team are awesome. I spend thousands of dollars here usually, but HOLY COW, they really need to fix the AC. I was about to spend $600 on a new wetsuit but I couldn't even attempt to try it on without sweating profusely. I tried it on, couldn't get it on, and got so hot I almost hyperventilated. So I gave up, left and purchased one elsewhere. It's a shame. Hope they can fix that AC! I'll be back when they do. read more

I can always rely on the fantastic sales associates here to help me find gifts that are different, new or just right, especially for my workout fanatic husband that seems to have everything. After staring at a sea of workout tops, the associate named Puma recommended the perfect new top from ON. He had a wealth of knowledge of brands, price points and fit. Also he was so friendly and helpful. Another male associate in the equipment section was also incredibly helpful and kind to my predicament of what to get for a gift. Excellent place to rent ski and snowboarding equipment, especially if you're a beginner or have growing kids. Our family was headed to South Lake Tahoe for a week on the slopes, and we needed to rent, not buy, equipment for our girls. Our older one was a "just past beginner stage" skier, and our younger one wanted to learn how to snowboard. My brother-in-law recommended Sports Basement, and what a great suggestion that turned out to be! From the moment we walked in, we saw how large the place was, with a massive selection of outdoor equipment and gear. They even have a ski bus ($99) which takes you to some of the popular resorts. The rental section is on one side, and staffed with very knowledgeable associates. They asked our girls a few questions, such as whether our younger daughter was goofy (left footed) or regular (right footed) so we could rent the right snowboard. And we rented brand-new ski boots for our older daughter as those were the best fit! The total cost was about $300 for eight days, and it was totally worth it, because the girls had a great time. Our older daughter has vastly improved her skiing (she didn't need poles by the end of our trip), and our younger one can snowboard now! I returned all the gear yesterday, and it took less than a minute. Thank you, Sports Basement, for helping our family learn how to snowboard and ski better! Absolutely amazing experience shopping for my snowboarding gear. Everyone was super kind, friendly and helpful. This is a follow-up to my previous review of sports basement. I previously had a bad experience over a pair of shoes earlier this year. The business reached out to me quickly and they immediately rectified and resolved the situation. I was so happy with the service and how they demonstrated that they do value their customers, that I decided to shop for my snowboard gear at the store. From the beginning, Jason over at the snow boots area got me into some Burton BOA boots along with Burton step on bindings. He got me a great deal on a snowboard. Then I went on to buy jackets, bibs gloves, helmets, and goggles here. I also bought gear for my niece who is starting skiing. Every single person I interacted with was super helpful and generous with their time and knowledge with snowboarding and skiing. For some reference and comparison, I did go to REI on two occasions. Mainly to compare helmets and goggles. They had a poor selection of jackets, bibs, and gloves. The prices were higher. And I couldn't find anybody to help me in REI. At the Dublin location. It's safe to say Sportsbasement is the best place to shop for sports oriented people. It's also safe to assume that my negative experience in the past was a one-off situation which is not the standard that this company operates in or how they strive to be as a company. I already went snowboarding 3 times. All the gear I bought performed at 10 out of 10, and I stayed super comfortable and dry all day long. Yes I did spend a bit because I purchased higher end equipment. But when you start a new sport like snowboarding at the age of 40+, Equipment does matter. I wish I wrote down the names of all the people who help me in picking out all this gear, mainly because I had a lot of questions since I am new to the sport so I was surprised with how helpful everyone was. read more

Came here to buy my first road bike and was met with incredibly helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly staff! I learned so much and they had really great tips on choosing the right bike for me. You can also test out the bikes in the parking lot. You just have to leave your drivers license as hostage and fill out a short form to do so. I ended up getting a Felt VR 40, and with the discount (50% for members!) this came out to a little over $1000 including tax. Super happy with my experience here! read more

I had previously stockpiled my old favorites and had finally run through them, so I went to the Snowfest in Berkeley today intending to buy some new pairs. With the array of new shoes, I was quickly overwhelmed with all the new lines so I enlisted the help of Dominic, on loan from the San Ramon store. I went into the store in San Ramon with my daughter on Tuesday April 29, 2025. I was in a situation that we had to switch the size of kids fins for my daughter because the "Easter Bunny" got the wrong size. Didn't know how I was going to pull it off. When I went to the cashier i mouthed to the young man behind the counter "please go with this" the young man's name is Conner. Conner was amazing. I explained that the Easter Bunny gave her the wrong size and he said he would text the Easter Bunny and let him know that we came in and got a different size. He grabbed a phone and acted like he was texting him and said that the Easter Bunny said that he was sorry and to exchange them. Conner was amazing. I was really impressed. It is very rare to have this kind of service from a younger gentleman in this kind of situation. That is an employee people are looking for. I just want to say thank you to Conner for doing this for me and having my daughter not have any questions of what happened. She is 11 and she believed everything that he said. I went to this Sports Basement to try and find an Exped MegaMat Duo sleeping pad to rent as a walk-in for I ended up needing it a day earlier than for what I originally reserved. Due to this adjustment, I would have to be a walk-in rental and if I could find one, Sports Basement could adjust my reservation. Walk-in rentals are a hit or miss depending on available stock. Also, the MegaMat Duo is a hot commodity which made it that much more hard to find. However, I was able to find one and this story ends well. Yay. I am leaving this review for even though I rented the sleeping pad from the Sports Basement in Berkeley, I wanted to recognize Kaleb and Joon in the Rentals department at the Sports Basement in San Ramon who were super helpful in my pursuit! This place is good. Staff is very helpful and I typically don't get the sense of trying to be "upsold". I normally do my research before visiting the store, so I have a pretty good idea of whatever item (particularly high $) I am looking to buy. And normally, I can find what I am looking for at SB. The prices are very fair, even more-so when you become a Basementeer. One tip I have for you - become a Basementeer. If you find yourself regularly shopping for outdoors / sports gear, don't drag your feet like I did in joining the club. You'll save a grip. The sales staff appear to like what they do and prices are right. She not only helped me but she was phenomenal at helping my extremely picky 13 year old granddaughter find a pair of running shoes. She's not the easiest teenager to buy for. Livy was amazing!!! They have an incredible staff especially Puma who has helped me find just about anything I need or order it on the spot if they don't have it. Came into purchase a pair of new pair of walking shoes. Trying on Merrell's brand a size above and below my normal size with self service. Ok.. The size10's were the correct fit. But I had to try 3 pairs of size 10 shoes out, one pair had the security sensor laced through the top lace hole making it impossible to lace the shoe up. Next pair was solidly a used pair of shoes. Third pair was a winner, a new pair I could laced up. I spoke to the sales person in the shoe department about the security tag issue, in the first pair. She showed no concern. Then, I pointed out the used pair with sole wear and sock lint. And her response was, " They have been used for one walk", WTF. I didn't expect to look through their stock for a new pair. Did not even remember there was a SB in San Ramon. Called and asked if they had a particular type of backpack in. Khi put me on hold for only a short time and told me he did and it would be up front waiting for me until the next day. I immediately drove there and he greeted me as I entered. He gave me the BP and sent me to the Back Country section to get fitted and the BP's features explained to me. He radioed to let the associate know I was enroute. There I met AAbid. He was personable and extremely knowledgeable. He took the time to fit me and explained features and what the ratings and numbers meant. He had personal knowledge of several types of packs and great advice. He was patience with me and gave me options. I went in with little knowledge and no confidence in selecting an appropriate BP for my needs to understanding BP's and The Duffel bag options so I was able to dial down what would work for me. Shout out to the rentals team. I had rented a bunch of tents for a recreational event for the non-profit I work for. I had e-mailed Customer Service to see if I could do a late return since we weren't scheduled to come back from our adventure until later in the day. They were super accommodating and said it would be no issue. I also put it in the notes when I set up the rental. I picked up the tents early on a Friday to assure we'd have everything ready by the time we left. Someone in our group misplaced/or lost one of the tents. It happens when a group of people shuffle things around especially when kayaking. When we were setting up camp, one of the other tents had been missing stakes. I explained the situation when I returned and they were super accommodating again & even took half off the lost return since I didn't receive all of the equipment (missing stakes) I had requested. Talk about great customer service! Noah who handled my questions over chat on the website and Jesus and Shane in rentals were such rock stars. They also offer 10% to charities - I'm not sure how it works but I'm definitely going to look into it and will coming back to rent or buy from them in the future. read more

Customer Service - starting with Bryan, Camille and Carl (the black lab) was fantastic from start to finish. I walked in, asked a couple questions and was directed in both places I needed to be. I had no idea what the price or comfort would be for Hoka shoes when I walked in the door, but they peaked my interest. I had not tried any on previously so I had no idea if they were going to work for me or not. Having had several foot surgeries, I needed a shoe that is comfortable and fits my feet well. Camille was very kind and helpful and patient. I tried a few different pairs on and listened to Camille's recommendation. Although they didn't have the color I was hoping for, I did end up finding a pair I am sure will work for me. Since they are pretty expensive, I wanted to make doubly sure I picked the "right" ones. The customer service was great and I definitely will return whenever I need something they sell (they sell just about everything!) BTW, Carl the very sweet and attentive black lab did a great job putting the clean socks I had used to try on the shoes in the dirty socks basket! Kudos to Carl or Karl, whichever it is. read more
