Spotlight is an ok place for Karaoke fans. $10 cover on weekends, Friday Saturday and Sunday's. Is it worth it?No. You can go to many FREE entrance karaoke places around the houston area. Cheapest drink is $7.50, beer by far is the cheapest at $5. Also, they are incredibly irresponsible. You want free water? They say buy a $3 bottle of Ozarka. Or nothing. Ok karaoke bar? Henry, our bartender was a really cool dude and served my wife and I great. He also helped me out with the long karaoke line. The KJ is the only one I would giving feedback about. Having a ticker on the TV or way of letting the long list of singers know when they are next would be helpful. Also, the DJ let dead air happened a few times. As a fellow KJ, if you have a line that long, you have to speed up your production time with no dead air and less music playing. I walked in after paying the cover charge and was immediately warned by my friends about the seats and how uncomfortable they were. DJ obviously picks singers in whatever order he wants rather than by when you sign up. (He wants to be tipped to get your song played according to other reviews). At the end of the night, our DD was charged $15 for soda. Are they trying to eliminate a sober driver? He paid the cover to get in, the place was maybe at half capacity on seating. Him being there made it possible for others to drink. I get that you want people to drink... It's a bar but come on! Twice as much as a cocktail for soda? The staff practically laughed when he asked if his bill was correct. Not impressed. The best thing about this place was the crowd, which you can get at most karaoke places. My favorite karaoke bar in houston . Believe I'm now a regular. I like it because the staff are friendly so is the owner who super cool. It's a beautiful ambience and is actually pretty large if you walk around a little. They have drink specials happy hour and they make really good drinks. I also love the sushi there at one point it was the only place I ate sushi it. The most busy nights I believe our Friday Saturday of course and sometime Sunday. Went to this location for my cousin's bday party and I must say the only enjoyable part was clowning with my family singing off key. We had a private room but the waitress sucked and only saw her maybe 2 times out of the 4 hours we were there. She kept forgetting my drink a glass of red wine how hard is that to remember? She precedes to tell me that even tho we've bought MORE than two drinks per person, because were using ONE card/tab it only counts as ONE person buying drinks therefore only ONE person can sing. I'm sorry but I wasn't born last night. You apparently have an issue with us. I even point out to her that If I'm on a date at "your establishment" and the guy I'm with is purchasing my drinks you mean to tell me that only HE can sing because at he's the one who's physically paying??? Service is horrible - we had a party for a friend. The waitress, in front of everyone and the birthday boy berated our friend who put down the deposit about how much he put down and how much we all had to spend - and her biggest concern - how much gratuity SHE needed. He quickly replied - "It's fine, I get it" but she wouldn't let it go. The waitress immediately hit everyone up for a drink not with a smile but a sneer. She wasn't totally heartless - she bumped us to a larger empty room since the AC was shot in the room we were in, but I'm curious to know if her smile muscles were severed at some point. Drinks were expensive, but not unheard of when going out (she threw in a group gratuity and i was NOT giving one cent more though I gladly would have if she was hospitable). I have sent 2 emails to management but have yet to hear a "sorry" or "we'll work on it". This place is awful! Not very friendly to designated drivers! almost $20 bucks for Sprite! no tap water, just bottled. Song selection mediocre, at best. The dj has his posse, so good luck getting a song in...we saw the same lame people over and over...and a special party trying to have a good time...NOT! We decided to leave when the wait became hours for your song to play. Oh, make sure not to order water. They won't serve you a free glass of water like most restaurants, you have to purchase a regular 16.oz bottle for $3.00 each. They don't have the courtesy of telling you up front that their bottled water cost $3.00 each. You can buy a 24 pack for $3.49. I paid $5.00 just to get in the place, what a rip off! Very dissappointing at the end. Booked a private room on friday night. Came and got the room set up and drinks ordered. One Asian waitress told me that it was 2 $ for domestic soooo I decided to order 48 of Bud light. Throughout the night it was fun. Then I noticed we ended up with another waitress and claimed Asian waitress left bc it was slow. Anyways the music was awesome the room was. pacious. Had a bathroom connected which was a plus. Everything was fine until I asked for the bill. They must think I was too drunk not to notice that the bill was way higher than expected. I asked for a breakdown and she struggled with that and came into the room with all of the tickets. Showed me a ticket of dried squid and told her no that was already paid for and she stutters saying that it came free with the drinks....yeah right liar..anyway I asked her how much was the beer and told me it was 5$ for domestic! Wait...say what now? Thought it was two. Told her that the Asian waitress before her told me 2. Her response was that they never sold 2 $ beer and that shes gonna get the Asian girl. And im here thinking thought she went home bc it was slow tonight? ? 0_o?? Okayy getting a shady feeling from them already. Asian waitress shows up and said she told me that it was 4 $ for domestic (which was utter BS) and then the white waitress corrects her and said its 5 $ loll okay yall cant get yalls crap straight. Over a month ago, 8 of us on a weekend night went into this mostly empty place. A friend had recommended it and we love karaoke. We signed up, ordered food and drinks and in 30 mins had the place poppin. We were enjoying ourselves even though they didn't have any more wings and we were pretty much the life of the party in the main room. Things went south went 40 mins later my cousin and a few others realized their name had never been called to sing. My male cousin went to the booth and asked why and the dj/song manager said he wasn't calling anyone from our table anymore. His excuse was we went too many times. Only 3 had went (one of the 3 went twice). The my bro then asked why because my cousin was getting upset because he had already spent $30 bucks and wanted to have fun and do his song. The DJ then became hostile and threatened to call the police on my brother and male cousin. There were other tables with smaller groups that went 4 times each, but he was accusing us of hogging the songs?! The DJ was so rude! My cousin told our waitress and she didn't do anything. The DJ definitely discriminated against my party because it was a lot of us and we were they youngest people there. It definitely ended on a sour note- and to think, half of us were on vacation! I told the Texas people to never return to that place again! In LA, we've never had such poor treatment at our karaoke spots. If you're a small group and look a certain way this place might actually treat you with respect. read more

Yep, I've been away for awhile, and I should probably at some point write about Boston seafood, Chengdu hotpot, and Hong Kong brothels (I mean, Hong Kong Dim Sum)....but maybe when I have more energy, because it will take some serious effort to really encapsulate those experiences and do them justice :) This one is easy - Spotlight's new look and feel. In short: I like it! Hey, there are nicer bars, nicer Karaoke places, and even much wiser opinions of what is "good"...and for that matter, more "reliable" reviewers here are pretty easy to find....but I'm going to spew my thoughts on this anyhow, so like it or kill me. I don't care which; I'm a wasted husk of a man anyhow.. But I regress...I've been going to Spotlight and making a bloody fool of myself for at least 5 years now. I've done a duet with Mr. Lee, Bought drinks for the house, tripped on the stairs leading up to the main stage and done a belly flop on my way to the mike, watched an Asian gang fight in the bathroom that ended up in the parking lot., and staggered away happy (while at the same time somewhat queasy) and full of hope for my future singing career more times than I'd like to recall.....good times, baby....good times... However, I am not going to write about that stuff today. Spotlight, as some of you may or may not know, was hit hard by Hurricane Ike. The place was trashed - and it warn't that dang fancy to begin with. Well, thanks to Charlie (The owner)'s wife, Cindy, this place is UP TO SPEED! The new decor is very nice, with new floors, fixtures, lighting, flat screens, DJ stand, sushi bar (Believe it or not, the sushi is FRESH, if not fancy...I've eaten it as a head spin stopper or just because I forgot to eat earlier at least a few times) - long story short; everything is new and purty. Mr. Lee is still crooning through old Sinatra tunes nightly, Charlie is still glad handing, and the cute little bartenders, some of whom I have lusted secretly for years, are still pouring strong drinks and flashing pretty smiles and the occasional chest crack glimpse for those that tip well. If you love to watch others croak out their rendition of "Brown Eyed Girl", or watch a bunch of drunken bachelorettes drone through "RESPECT", or "I will survive", or if you just feel the need to become a blithering idiot and sing your favorite AC/DC tune in front of your peers, destroying any modicum of "cool" you may have once rated with them, and in turn any "esteem" they may possibly have held you in....you won't find a better place/venue for it in Houston. The party rooms are also refurbished, although I think they could use an upgrade on some of the sound equipment. The sound system seems to be the only thing they didn't improve, and it would be nice (But then again, hearing people better when they sing Karaoke may not be such a great idea...hmmm...let me noodle on that one) SO - Check out the new and improved Spotlight Karaoke. You'll be glad you did. I'll see you there some Friday or Saturday night....I'll be the guy hugging people and promising endless friendship in between belting out something you'll wish later you'd never heard...believe me, hearing me sing karaoke will come back to you in snippets on the drive home... like a bad dream....and you might throw up in your mouth a little bit. read more

I don't usually go to karaoke bars, or any bars really. But I was here last night for a little while. The bar is in a not too great area. It's not bad, but it's certainly not super classy. It is tucked in the back of a shopping center. When I went in, I was surprised at how nice and clean the place looked in comparison to it's relatively underwhelming surroundings. What also struck me when I walked in was the smell - I do not know what it was, but it was not good. It took a few minutes to get used to it and it made me want to leave. But I stayed. They do have private rooms, which is nice. And the service I received was excellent. The bartenders were very friendly and attentive, so that's why I give it 3 stars. The karaoke seemed ok, but I don't really have much to compare it to. read more

This was my second time at Spot Light and the first time I had a problem with the waitress overcharging my credit card but that's another issue for another post... Well last night Venue experience was cool. Few things that caught me off guard was the room temperature in the private room (which was extremely cold) Cleanliness of the restroom could've been better! Also the drinks could use improvement especially with the price points being offered. I ordered a Lemon Drop Martini which was $12 and after one sip noticed my drink taste funny so a couple more sips then my throat started to burn so I went back to the bar to ask the bartender what type of Vodka did she use for my martini because it taste funny, she proceeds to say Taka Vodka I nearly lost it so you're telling me you're charging me $12 for Taka Vodka. Overall experience was cool but I wouldn't return just the mere fact that I know they use cheap bottom shelf liquor but charges top self prices. read more

Went to a birthday party here in a private room on a Saturday night. Place was very nice not a large crowd like in the past which I liked. The private room was big and very nice setup. We were allowed to have pizza delivered. Last of songs to choose from. The only problem was or servers. It too awhile for her to come and check on us. We whould have gone to the bar but the room comes with a minimum tab amount.when she did come she was not very friendly at all. I dont think I say her smile at all. This is hands down the best Karaoke joint ever! The staff is super friendly and the drinks are perfectly made. The crowd is so diverse and happy go lucky that you just cant help but to get cheer on the singer. You feel secure as there is at least two security guard at all times during the weekend. I have come here dozens of times. It is usually a decent place. But Friday night I tried to go there and the asshole ar the door wanted me and my wife to pay $5 cover each to get in? Are you fucking kidding me? They have never charged a cover before. And for what? To watch a room full of drunk amatuers sing? I don't fucking think so. Awful. The service is 50/50 I suppose. One woman has been really nice and the other has been extremely rude. The drink prices are unreasonable. $4 for a bud light and $7 for a whiskey and ginger ale.
