This ain't it sis!!! Ordered the pick 2 combo - half a turkey sandwich and a side salad. When i tell you this was literally the tiniest side salad I've ever seen in my life. It was literally served in a microscopic bowl with no more than five pieces of lettuce. I posted a pic of the bowl the salad was served in so you can witness this atrocity. Basically paid over 9 dollars for half a sandwich with two slices of deli meat slapped on and a sample size salad. Highly do not recommend. At all. I have always liked the Spotted Dog because it the food was good, the location is convenient, and the prices felt appropriate for pub fare. I was very surprised to go to the Spotted Dog last week and find that they've raised their prices substantially - almost doubling them. What used to be a 40 dollar dinner for me and two kids now cost 80. A Burger that used to cost 12.50 now costs 20 dollars. It would be one thing if this cost adjustment allowed for living wages for the servers, but no, you are still prompted to tip 20% as a minimum. Their menu is huge but that means a lot of stuff isn't fresh. Our chips were so stale and our soup was separated. The carne asada fries tasted like the kitchen and were $15!!! Greasy table tops, non-existent service, portions that have shrunk down to mostly just a snack, and most of the beer taps were unavailable (we found out after sitting unattended for 10 minutes - had we known we would have left before being seated!). I really loved Spotted Dog decades ago, but they've slowly been slipping on quality and service to the point that their unique offering of "we can make vegetarian food accessible to all" has become "we can take supermarket fake meats and put them on bread! Look, we shredded soy nuggets to make 'chicken', too!" With people focusing on farm-to-table and legitimate vegetarian recipes, they may want to consider dropping the gross meat analogues and step into the world of making distinctive vegetarian dishes that people don't think of as vegetarian (I'd take a fig and blue cheese flatbread over soy nuggets tossed in Tabasco sauce any day!) read more

3rd time here, not a great night. I realize COVID is almost over and restaurants are busy, but we first were given a table by the front door. We moved to another table (4 of us) that was really for two people. The service was horrible, we waited nearly an hour for food. The fans and AC were on high, we asked if it could be lowered, and they could not do that. All of us ate with our coats on. When the food came out, it was cold. My bill was paid with cash, the waitress took the cash and came back and said I assume you do not need change. This was over a 20% tip. Burger, on second visit should be expanded upon, it was so sad. I ordered a burger w/side salad and a mixed drink - nothing else - for a late lunch - over $25 w/tip. Think about it - $25 for lunch w/a cocktail. The salad was good. The drink was weak, the ginger ale was a bit flat. For my burger, I was served 3 pieces of re-heated dried-up pieces of ground beef under a cloud of sprouts. I did complain in that 'C'mon, did you really mean to present this as a hamburger' way and the waitstaff promised a replacement but had to stop and say... "You didn't order well-done, did you?" No, I didn't ... nor did I ask for it to be old, dry and in three pieces. My replacement burger was just that - a little patty on a saucer. Again, "Is this really what you want to serve me?" kind of comment from me. "Oh, did you want a whole new plate? I thought only the burger was the problem." Really? I mean, really? I'm frustrated to see reviews for my favorite area restaurant knocked by people who, for example, "abhor the thought of eating soy beef." I mean, you know what to except from a vegetarian/vegan restaurant, right? I'm not going to go to a steak house and criticize the lack of vegetarian options or give a lower rating because I "abhor the thought of eating real beef." Anyway, all bias aside, I brought my fully omnivorous boyfriend here who called his burger one of the best he has ever had. Any burger from their entire burger menu can be real beef or made vegan. We also got the "Puppy Ciao" appetizer, which I think was on the specials menu. It was a simple nachos appetizer but it was delicious! I've been twice. The night we went most recently there was a great special on local beer, but unfortunately, there was apparently high demand and many kegs were out when we came for a late dinner. I have been a veggie for most of my life and never tried BBQ before making the switch and oh my gosh, the vegan BBQ sandwich makes the top 3 of the most delicious sandwiches I have ever had (apparently by not eating real BBQ I really am missing something). My boyfriend is a good sport and tried it and said it tasted real and was very good. The first time I went I got one of the burgers converted to veggie and added soy bacon. It was a little more expensive than I would have liked to add bacon, but well worth the splurge. I was eating with my vegan roommate who had the homemade lemon sorbet. It had a delicious flavor but was a tad bit icy for my taste. If you're vegetarian or vegan, this menu will thrill you. It cannot be beat. If you're a meat eater, you'll have delicious options there as well and if you're willing to try some of the soy stuff, you may be pleasantly surprised! I was in the mood for something pretty light last night; despite the girl eating the delicious look burger next to our table. So, I decided to go with a grilled tuna salad and I wasn't disappointed. It was a fresh and lively dinner. I'm really picky about my dressings and the Asian dressing was perfect for this salad. The tuna was sushi grade, so I had it served up raw and with my margarita and salad I was a perfectly happy little girl last night. Jon went with crab cakes. They gave him three! I was really surprised to see three rather large crab cakes on his plate, that's a rare find as it's usually two and sometimes even one! They gave their best attempt to do it Maryland style, which they failed at, but I don't expect anyone to nail a good MD style crab cake around here... it's North Carolina. Despite it not being Maryland, it was still pretty tasty! All in all, I like this place. Additionally, we've had the same server enough times to say with certainty, the service needs to be improved. Her attitude is not pleasant and today she made the comment, "I'm sure you're ready to order but I have other things going on. I'll be back when I'm ready." We won't be back. I never knew North Carlina could be so charming. We had a detour into Chapel Hill on the way to pick up our new puppy. I love this little town with the hippie vibe. Who knew? We found Spotted Dog on Yelp :) and headed straight there. The place is in a corner building so it's got a wedge shape with a bar in the middle. AND they have Fat Tire! Awesome. The menu is american vegetarian style, and it's got lots of options. We split the buffalo "chicken" and ordered BBQ Chicken Sandwich and I ordered the Fried Chicken Sandwich. Yummy! Why am I such a huge fan of the Spotted Dog? For one, I'm not exactly a vegetarian, but I do tend to lean that way from time to time (more so because I hate vegetables and thus want to make them suffer rather than because of any sort of health conscious or moral reasons) and this establishment is very vegetarian/vegan friendly. Secondly, I do have a bunch of friends that are true vegetarians or vegans, and thus the Spotted Dog is always a good option to grab a bite with such peeps. However, the main reason is a simple one: the food is fresh, healthy, and tasty. I've enjoyed a number of dishes here, and have been pleased each and every time. For starters, the Champion Chili is perfect for a cold day with just the right amount of spiciness and topped off with melted cheesy goodness. Not a chili fan? Well, then why not enjoy a cup or bowl of the Punkin's potato soup---creamy, filling, and smooth. For a main dish, I recommend the spottofu as the grilled and perfectly seasoned tofu or tempeh (I've had both versions) is absolutely delicious over a bed of rice. That marinade is killer! The black-eyed pea cakes and turkey burger are also sure to please. A strict carnivore may not appreciate it, but I do think it's pretty cool that you can make almost any dish vegan. They are definitely more than willing to customize your order. Even cooler is the fact that they serve a wide variety of dog-themed microbrews (ie, Flying Dog, Dogfish Head, Thirsty Dog, Sea Dog). How amazing is that?! To top it all off, the staff is super friendly and seemingly quite dedicated to make sure that you have an enjoyable dining experience. During one visit to the Spotted Dog, my girlfriend was not feeling well and thus did not eat much of her meal. Seeing this, one of the owners stopped by to see if anything regarding her meal was not to her liking. He was clearly genuinely concerned, and when he heard that she was suffering from a pretty severe headache, he insisted on finding some ibuprofen for her. How is that for customer service? One thing's for sure: If there's good, healthy food and wittily named microbrews, I'll be a fan! And thus I put the Spotted Dog near the top of my list of Triangle area restaurants. read more

So this isn't the most stylish restaurant in town, and it is kind of oddly laid out, with booths and tables seemingly better suited to munchkins than full-sized people. Or maybe I'm just fat. I usually sit at the bar. But the food is reliably awesome. Great chicken sandwich (the "Ralphie Boy") with bacon on it -- it's even better if you replace the dijon mustard with honey mustard, which is the best I've ever had. Seriously, stuff is like crack. Maybe it is liquefied crack, who knows. I could eat buckets of this stuff. Excellent fries -- different from Milltown's belgian fries and Tyler's garlic fries, both excellent in their own right. The Dog's are beer-battered and fried hard and crispy. The veggie burger is great also. I order it often, and I'm not even vegetarian. What else . . . potato and cheese soup is awesome, as are the nachos, and there are always a few good beers on tap (seems to be the only local establishment serving Red Oak anymore). What they don't have: good music (a lot of 80s playing, not really my thing), hipsters, good people watching, outdoor seating. But the food is so solid, I'm still here almost every week. read more

The black-eyed pea cakes are sublime, and the vegetarian barbecue sandwich would go from wonderful to divine if only the slaw had more vinegar! Pros: Charming place, Friendly Service, good Vegan selection Cons: Entrees hit-or-miss, and some overpriced Let me start at the end: We paid $49 with tip for two kids meals and two adult meals (no drinks) and none of us were particularly happy with our meals. Normally that would mean "never again" in my book. But in this case I'm sure we will give Spotted Dog another try. I'll explain below. My wife ordered the Fish and Chips. They were quite pricey at $14. It should have been called "fish fingers". We were envisioning a traditional pub-style Fish and Chips with two or three large fish fillets, but instead it was a basket of little breaded nuggets. Definitely never again on the Fish and Chips. I ordered the Fish Tacos off of the Nightly Specials menu; also $14. Maybe I misread the menu, but I was surprised when the tacos arrived deep fried. Imagine a Southwest Eggroll and you get the idea. If the whole tortilla is deep fried, isn't that a Fish Chimichanga? Don't get me wrong ... they were very good but not the light entree I was expecting. One of the kids got a burger and the other got a hot dog. Both of them picked at their meals but they both looked good to me so I can't complain about the kids meals. Also they were reasonably priced and came with a free drink. I guess the kids just weren't hungry. I guess I could complain about the 50 cent charge for lettuce on the burger, but upcharges with no warning are just a pet peeve of mine. Next time I'll probably order a burger. They looked good and were a lot more reasonably priced. Also the Vegan entrees looked good. And the waiter and manager really were nice. Again, it's not like anything we ordered wasn't tasty ... just not what we were expecting. I guess my advice would be to ask the waiter/waitress a lot of questions to make sure you know what you're ordering. read more

I keep going back to Spotted Dog and I don't know why. The service is slow (and occasionally very rude), the food is mediocre (its either ok or horrible), and its a little expensive for what you get. I only rated it 2 stars because I am all for supporting local businesses, but these guys just seem to have completely given up. If you are in Carrboro, opt for one of the other restaurants. After visiting the Spotted Dog for the umpteenth time, I thought I'd finally write a review. This is by far one of the best places in the Chapel Hill/Carborro area. What makes it so great you ask? 1. Great cute decor, but not overly fancy nor too college town diner like. You can feel comfortable bringing anyone here, in any dress. 2. Great service, the wait staff are all friendly and knowledgeable and the managers are as passionate about good food as they are about dogs. 3. I've taken multiple people with many different tastes here from Vegans to Vegetarians to Meat-Eaters to Foodies to Northerners etc. No one has ever had a problem finding something on their menu and I've never tasted a dish that wasn't great. 4. Not too shabby on the bottom line. This last time I was there I brought my family for lunch, so that's four people and we all got entrees and an appetizer for about 10 bucks per person! Can't argue with that. My recommendations: -The endless chips and salsa verde -Their balsamic vinaigrette dressing -The chili -The spinach artichoke dip -The Black bean burger - Any of their pasta dishes! Fantastic place.. Just got back from here for lunch and WOW... Went to lunch with a few people from work with one being Vegan... First, the location is fantastic, you can get there a little early and walk around Main street and enjoy the college atmosphere. Second the building has fantastic character. It is an old building that they did a great job converting into the Spotted Dog. The FOOD... As I said we picked the place because of the reviews of the place adjusting to vegans... Not only will they change existing menu items to accommodate vegans, they now have vegan courses. We started with the vegan soy wings and being not vegan I was a bit hesitant... Boy was I wrong.. AMAZING!!!! It comes with sauces that they make in house and was fantastic... I got a chicken sandwich with fries and you can just tell that the food is prepared and cooked with care. It was great... The vegan in the group got the tacos based on the owners recommendation and he said he would have licked the plate!!!! The last thing to note was the ownership, fantastic... She was walking around and actually spent time talking to you about where they get their soy and their menu items. There's an awful lot to like about the Spotted Dog. In no particular order: - The whimsical decor. I almost bought a painting I certainly didn't need because I was so mesmerized by it - The world's most cheerful waitress (I say that without a hint of irony... she was awesome). - A menu that allows meat, veg and vegan diners to co-exist quite happily without patronizing any of them. Joel even ordered two meatless dishes! People, that sort of thing does NOT happen. - A couple of truly standout plates: 1) the BBW wings that were actually made of some vegetarian faux chicken were really, really tasty. We ordered them regular (having been asked if we wanted to dial up the heat) and they were plenty hot enough. 2) The bread pudding .I forget what the twist was, but it was one of the better bread puddings I've had in my time.. - The beer selection. Anywhere you can order something called 'Wee Heavy-er' must surely be a winner. - The doggie hall of fame pics on the way to the bathroom. I'm not even a dog lover but it was still quite sweet to see all those canines showcased, like members of one's extended family. I have to dock points for (1) terribly uncomfortable booth seating and (2) mystery tummy troubles that struck one or two household members the next day. Perhaps you can have too much of a good thing? The Spotted Dog is one of the most vegan-friendly restaurants that I had the chance to visit in Chapel Hill. From their tempeh salad to the uniquely crafted veggie burger, I loved their creative veggie dishes. (Sometimes I get tired of restaurants who only have hummus wraps as their vegetarian friendly dishes.) The dining room itself is oddly shaped, but actually really cool. The only problem is that it's a pretty tight space. But all-in-all, I have no complaints. They had $2.95 wells on Friday. Woo! I got the sweet potato and black bean chimichangas and they were delicious! The dish has 2 large chimichangas and I really wanted to finish them both, but I had to stop at one and a half! The service was friendly and quick as well. I will definitely come here again next time I am in Carrboro! One thing I would warn patrons about is that the building has an odd shape and seating is a little tight. Seating could be difficult if you use a wheelchair or if you have a large stroller with you. There are only a few tables near the front that have wider spaces in between them. read more

My parents came to visit from Arizona. Self-proclaimed vegetarians (with the exception of holidays. Yeah, go figure), I wanted to give them the most options possible and had heard great things about Spotted Dog. We did a late afternoon lunch (2:30/3). This was the only downside of the experience. No one was there to seat us. I literally had to wander in the kitchen, calling out the entire time for assistance. Once that we settled, the food and service spoke for itself. The daily special was a butternut squash/pumpkin bisque with a grilled cheese w/spinach, tomato and this incredible cream cheese spread. Immediately after she named the special, we all three opted for it. We did try the sandwiches on different breads (wheat, sourdough and rye). The bisque was rich with flavor. The grilled cheese was perfectly cooked, cheese melted in all the right places, and that cream cheese spread just took it over the edge. I will definitely be back to try other dishes (some meat as well). It's a cozy corner spot with some good drink specials as well (and excellent craft beer available). read more

Upon walking in, it is a cute little place with a unique set up -- booths and tables on the perimeter and the kitchen/bar in the middle. I ordered the grilled tuna salad. The amount of greens they give you was impressive, but the tuna was not. It didn't seem fresh and it was incredibly tough. Not the way fresh tuna should be. By boyfriend ordered a burger and did not enjoy it. For the price, we expected better. But with this being said, I would be willing to go back and try a salad with grilled chicken on it. Their service and beer selection is great. Their wine selection is nothing to brag about, but I don't think this is a place you would choose to go have a glass of nice wine. Not a place for me. The food tastes fine, but I'm not a vegetarian and all the cool dishes were meat free. I really wanted the grilled flautas, but I abhor the thought of eating soy beef (yuck). Since the flautas are pre-made, you can't substitute for beef or chicken. I settled for the special (grilled cheese with tomato and avocado), and it was tasty, but I wanted something more interesting that didn't involve soy (or a burger). However, if you are a vegetarian, the menu is awesome. You can substitute any sandwich with its meatless variety, and the salads are pretty good (fresh, organic). Next time I REALLY want a bean burger or soy flauta, I'll come back, but otherwise, I'll stick with the meat. read more

The outside tables are small and wobbly but it was worth it for how nice of a day it was. We started with the buffalo "chicken" wings. This dish alone I would give it 5 stars. They tasted so good! I would definitely come back for these. As a table we ordered the tacos, tostadas, a Mac and cheese dish, and another pasta dish. I thought all the dishes were okay. The taco and tostada dish tasted a little more on the tomatoey side so I was not a fan. I normally like my meat marinated in a spice versus a tomato sauce. As a dedicated carnivore (I used to own an actual spotted dog... he was delicious), me and the Spotted Dog had some issues to work out between us. This place is the epicenter of hippie dining in the area (rivaled only by Weaver Street, which is a scant thirty feet away), so you should really exercise caution when ordering off the non-vegan parts of the menu. That said, I have to agree with Henry S... These are some rockin' fish and chips. I'm a huge fish and chips lover, and these guys do them right. Love it to death. So much, in fact, that it's all I've ever had here. That's five stars for food, and the decor similarly (how cute can you make this place, honestly, it's almost too much), but the service tends to be a little slow and even rude. YAY! We had a great experience here! we went in for dinner and sat at the bar. We had not one, but TWO, very cute and fun bartenders take care of us-- I wish I could remember their names, though! The girl bartender was Chris, but I can't remember the cute boy bartender's name... My dining partner and I were looking around the area as a possible place to move, and the bartenders were super friendly and helpful with regards to our questions about the area. Then, the food. It was GREAT to have a menu that had just as many veggie options as it did meat-options! Sadly, the vegetarian "BBQ" sandwich wasn't all i'd hoped it to be... the texture was right-on, but the "sauce" had been described on the menu as an "Eastern Carolina" bbq "sauce" (meaning- dry and vinegary, not sweet-n-tomatoey and gooey)... but the flavor ended up being kind of sweet, with no real vinegar flavor to it...
