Super rude employees (hey maybe they're stressed), but i have no idea why they feel the need to be actively mean. (I was yelled at because the bagel i ordered was sold out, then mocked when i asked if they had a tie dye bagel to replace it). I decided never to go back but not update my review as everyone has a bad day. But then...My husband went back. He placed his order online with an estimated 35 minutes. He got there 35 minutes later and was told it would be 20 more minutes for 2 bagel sandwiches. And when he got the order over 20 min later, the sandwiches were not correct. Will never be back. A premium price for a sloppy mess! I ordered avocado toast for me and my girlfriend. We were shocked when we opened the box. "Where is the avocado?" The bagels were carelessly topped with ingredients sliding off the side or down the middle whole. It was just sad! The surface of bagel was stained green by a few lonely avocado molecules. Without exaggeration I can say that it was the worst attempt at avocado toast I've ever seen (and I've seen many). Also, the coffee we ordered was weak and cold. We asked them to make it for us again and the woman made us coffee from the exact same coffee machine as before. To no one's surprise, it was the exact same experience. She then tried to convince us that the coffee was in fact hot, despite it clearly not being hot. We requested a full refund, then we went around the corner to Ultimo where we were able to get coffee that was actually hot (and strong). Just ordered 2 bagels and a coffee, almost $20 worth of food only to pick it up (5 minutes before the scheduled pick up time) and everything was cold. Coffee was cold and both toasted bagels were cold and dry. Ordered the nova salmon spread on one bagel, there was "almost" a sliver or salmon in the spread. ‍ Don't order for pick up. My favorite breakfast sandwich in the city. Idk what to say other than I taste the TLC that's put into every sandwich. The bagels are on point every time. Eggs are cooked to perfection. Turkey bacon, pork bacon, or Canadian bacon, they have it all! If a legit sandwich was not enough they have La Colombe coffee as well. This place literally never disappoints. I used to order bagels from them regularly - the food is good (not quite as good as NY bagels (such as H&H), but still good and still delivered. Now there web site is so glitchy. It has switched my order from delivery to pick up. Then it told me to order from a different location (yes the website makes you decide which one to order from). After cycling through several locations I finally found one that would take my order...but wait - NO! - It tells me my address - a regular house address in the city is not a valid address. So spread is pretty hard for me to judge, because I feel like they may have a problem keeping staff around. Every time I've gone there's new faces, so it's hard to put quality control on that. Sometimes the staff doesn't always get the order right, especially on their busier days (like the weekends). So check your to-go orders before leaving. Also on busy days, expect to have a line out the door and a 20 minute wait, unless you go early. But I'd say its worth it. Spread has a lovely interior- cute marble tables and wood everywhere. Big windows in the front. It's an aesthetic cafe. The bagels are great, the oven brick Montreal style is not easy to come by and is definitely delicious. It gives the bagels this crispy warmth that I haven't tasted elsewhere. For a philly bagel, it's pretty good. They also serve la colombe coffee, so it's pretty safe to say I like it here. Their menu of sandwiches has minimal vegetarian options except for the egg/cheese. (Sorry, vegans!) I recommend a bagel with their berry spread, it's a cream cheese base with berries mixed in. Immediately at the entrance is a counter, separating hungry patrons from the flurry of workers flipping eggs, toasting bagels, and assembling sandwiches. The wood-fired oven is on full display, emanating a cozy heat that fills the entire front of the restaurant. Deeper back is a snug mezzanine, packed tightly with a handful of granite tables, metal chairs, and a dark-wood church pew. Unassuming white subway tiles and muted teal walls offset eclectic decorations, such as a handful of rusted, old-fashioned watering cans and a collection of brightly colored, classic movie posters, but featuring Spread; one boldly proclaims, "I'm going to make him as bagel he can't refuse." I've been meaning to give this spot a whirl for some time now, but have never been able to commit to it. That finally changed, as my partner and I visited Spread last weekend. Right off the bat, we were shocked to see a line trailing out the door. Moreover, all of the tables were taken with parties palavering over the Phillies and their plans for the holiday weekend. Seeing the prices, we decided to split a meal -- the Classic Sandwich with smoked Nova salmon. I really enjoyed our sandwich -- it actually rivals some restaurants' smoked salmon brunch appetizers for flavor. The top and bottom halves of our everything bagel were both generously seasoned. Although it was warmed, I wish it had been toasted to a crispier texture. I don't know if it was genius or diabolical (maybe it was both), but the tomatoes have a similar consistency to the salmon, really making it feel as though the sandwich was absolutely packed. The cream cheese itself wasn't particularly notable, but it worked in physically holding the ingredients together. Additionally, our request for capers was granted, adding an extra saltiness and acidity. However, I have to ding Spread on two accounts. First, the price is pretty absurd. The $13.50 sandwich jumps to $15 after tax and tip -- and that's assuming you only want to split a single item without drinks. Second, the service was sorely wanting. The hostess was rudely aloof and not particularly efficient (probably explaining the huge queue). Moreover, it took nearly 15 minutes for our order to be completed, despite us not even ordering a hot item; meanwhile, customers behind us in line both received their items and had nearly finished up eating by the time we were served. While it's definitely a handy in-and-out option to have around Rittenhouse, I'm not planning on heading back to Spread any time soon. read more

So, even if you just ordered a bagel toasted with cream cheese, you have to wait until all the orders before you (sometimes, for multiple bagel sandwiches), are complete before you get your bagel toasted. Food: The eggs and bacon are standard - nothing outstanding. They do give you a LOT of cream cheese on a bagel - that's a plus. Overall: - if it were meant to be a short wait, grab-and-go breakfast, then I would give it a higher score. However, the fact you generally need to wait 30 minutes for a bagel doesn't seem worth it to me. The first time I walked by Spreads, the line was out the door and though hungry, I walked by because I couldn't understand why a bagel place in Philadelphia had a line out the door. I decided to stop by the next day when the line was pretty short and got a "standard" sandwich the next day and completely understood why people waited. The bagels are freshly made and the sandwiches are amazing. A standard is a bacon, egg and cheese and the cheese was melted so perfectly. So perfect I almost got a second sandwich just to take back to New York with me. Spreads definitely deserves the line and it's totally worth the wait. read more

If you are in a rush, avoid Spread Bagely on a weekend. We order from here regularly. However we won't be anymore. Three out of our last four delivery orders have been messed up. The ticket is correct but items are missing. Luckily we used a third party delivery the first two time. This weekend we used Spread's website. We ordered bagels, lox and cream cheese. They delivered the cream cheese. That's it. When we called we got an auto text to start a chat. There is NO option to speak with a live human being. Seriously. We got no reply as of Two nights later. I feel this place is worthy of more stars but at the moment I cannot appropriately give it to them. I heard great things and have a newly reoccurring appointment near by and decided today was the day. The BAGEL! The bagel itself is fantastic. I personally love everything and it's loaded up. But I have the wonderful crunch from being baked in the brick oven. The WHITEFISH SALAD. Yum, unfortunately they only have half a serving left. Which now makes me nervous this post may be followed by some gastrointestinal issues. The reason! Three stars because the were not prepared. They were out of flavors of bagels, cucumbers, ice tea, now white fish... and who knows what else supposedly because the prep cook didn't prep. Instead they took the QR code sign off the sidewalk. Here's the failure: Not enough communication as to the fact they had been swamped, delaying orders. No text update to that effect. Had they communicated better, those waiting around would have been more sympathetic, easing tensions. Not only were they very late with my order, but when I asked (Both in person and through the app) it be bagged separately, I had a bag tossed across the counter. Your bagel sandwiches are expensive. I'd appreciate politeness and courtesy regardless of your current activity level. Was down visiting and was looking for a good bagel place the morning we left. We walked by this place a couple times and said we should give it a try. The bagel flavors were fun, I had the Rosemary Sea Salt with Lox and it was delicious. My boyfriend got the everything bagel and got the egg white added, it has spinach, turkey bacon and truffle mushrooms. It was good! There was a line and a little bit of a back up that morning but they moved fast for a small prep kitchen. Solid bagels. Spread Bagelry is always busy (on weekdays, weekends, for breakfast, even lunch), and I get why. I find Spread's bagels to be similar to those I had in Montreal, with that slightly denser texture and wood-fired taste. After a year away from Philly, I visited Spread late on a weekday morning on my way out of town and found Spread to be as tasty as always. Bagel prices range from $3.50 for the basic bagel with cream cheese to $12 for a sizable pastrami bagel sandwich. I'm a fan of the nova scramble (scrambled egg and smoked salmon cream cheese for $8.50) and the Greek bagel sandwich special (salmon, tzatziki sauce, and red onion for ~$11), and my sister almost always goes for the standard (scrambled eggs, bacon, and cheese for $7). Spread's prices, though a bit high, are in line with other bagel places in Center City, and for me, their bagel sandwiches so filling, I can usually stretch them over breakfast and lunch. There are some tables at in the front window and at the back of the place, but as seats are hard to come by, I usually get bagels to go. Because the place is so busy, the most popular bagel flavors (sesame apparently) often run out on the weekends, but on the flip side, the bagels are always super fresh. Service is not particularly friendly - just make sure you know what you're ordering before you get to the front of the line and you'll be fine. The ordering line moves pretty fast, but after that, prep time for each order does take another 15+ minutes. I never felt like I had to write a review for Spread because they always have lines out the door, but their 3.5 star rating on Yelp surprised me. If you like bagels, can accept that Spread's bagels are Montreal-style, not New York-style, and are willing to wait a bit, I'd recommend stopping by Spread Bagelry for some toothsome, loaded bagel sandwiches. P.S. If you go on the weekend, be prepared to be regaled by live accordion music while you stand in line. read more

Spread Bagelry was right out the door and had plenty of people that were there waiting for a bagel. Usually a good sign. We ordered two sandwich bagels and a plain with smear. WOW! The sandwiches were wonderful. The bagel was crisp and fresh and the spread, eggs, bacon and tomatoes made the best breakfast sandwich. Disappointing! Several years ago I had the BEST Montreal style bagels from a place I don't recall, near Priceton. Doing a Christmas road trip from Tampa to Boston (!) I planned on bringing a dozen to my son in BOSTON as we're NYers and used to NY bagels. Well apparently the place is no longer in business or I couldn't locate it. I thought it might have been a branch of Spread. Sadly no relation. Located in Philadelphia, at 12 they had so few bagels left (despite being open till 4) and were making more. Most frustrating because of their poor management they refused to sell a dozen because they were so low, after waiting in line for 10-15 minutes. They acquisied and sold me 1/2 dozen for $10. Today I ordered a nova classic on an everything bagel (both sides toasted). I also requested cutlery. The bagel was stale, the lox was not fresh either and no cutlery was provided. Read the reviews. I have eaten here a few times because I usually stay in RItt Sq when I visit Philly. I always order a bacon, egg and cheese on an everything bagel (not toasted). They usually screw it up and toast the bagel. They did it again today. They way overtoasted the bagel and overcooked the bacon. I have finally given up on this place. If I wasn't hungry, I would have thrown it out. There is a much better bagel place in So Philly, but it is a 30 minute walk and I didn't feel like it today. I was in NYC last week and their bagels are night and day from bagels in other cities. Philly is no exception. Philly has exceptional restaurants and bakeries, but Spread Bagelry is pretty bad. Not sure how they have lasted so long in an upscale area that generally commands better food. Really awesome Montreal style bagels. Really instagrammable display case. Great service if you don't come at busy hours. Heavenly cream cheese. Cute seating. Great location. On the other hand, if they are slammed, the service is way way too slow and they make your meal subpar. So I highly recommend going off hours. When you have food this good nearby, you need to get over the hurdles and figure out how to eat it. Horrendously under-reviewed on Yelp. These bagels fresh are heaven. I really want to like this place - but the bagels are just average to me. Very crispy and don't have much flavor. The cream cheese is just alright too. Just want a tastier meal when you factor in the price and waiting time on a typical Saturday or Sunday morning.
