    Biscuits and buratta
    Alexandra A.

Loved the biscuits and the potatoes those are a must try. Servers and bartenders are so nice. They also have a really good espresso martini. We were sat in a unique booth that almost made the dining experience feel private which was lovely.

I still find myself craving this place! It came highly recommended on TikTok, and it definitely lived up to the hype. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to take many photos because my phone was dying, but the hostess was incredibly kind and offered to charge my phone for me in their space. That small gesture made the experience even better. Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious. The biscuits were perfectly done--not dry at all, but buttery, soft, and even better with the pimento cheese spread. The combination was amazing! My steak was tender, juicy, and cooked to perfection, while the broccoli had the perfect crisp texture that added a nice balance to the meal. The restaurant itself has a beautiful rustic yet modern atmosphere. The dim lighting creates a cozy feel, with most of the brightness coming from the natural sunlight that fills the space. Between the incredible food, welcoming service, and inviting ambiance, this spot is definitely one I would return to again.

Absolutely loved our meal here. Everything was a knockout. I ordered the chicken and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. You'd assume there's not many ways you can innovate fried chicken but there's was amazing! Other highlights of our meal were the biscuits, the broccoli, the watermelon salad, and the ribeye steak. The service was great and we loved the dark, moody cabin-inspired ambience as well.

Came last on a Friday, they were able to seat us with no problem. Got the chicken, grilled okra and pan fried mashed potatoes. I wasn't really impressed with the new recipe for the Bobo chicken however the grilled okra and mashed potatoes didn't disappoint. Our waiter also let us try a Madeira to go with the peach crumble. It was a perfect compliment. I love this place, not just for the food but the great customer service each and everytime

Have you ever had a server make your whole night? Abby was that person and more! Her thoughtful suggestions, jokes, and kindness put my birthday celebration over the top! What's more- with just a couple of questions, she was able to pick a perfect wine pairing for me. In addition to the exceptional service, there was stellar food to enjoy ! Everything we ate from the famed biscuits to the deviled eggs to the steaks impressed. I found myself wishing I lived closer so I could get those biscuits on my way home everyday! We sat in a cute curtained booth that felt luxe and comfortable. For the price, St. Anselm is one heck of a restaurant. Glad I got to celebrate there.

Finally got to check out St. Anselm and it did not disappoint! It's a cool vibe for dinner with friends or even a date night. The staff are super attentive to everything going on. They made sure to keep our table clean and gave us new silverware and plates before or entrees arrived. Any food that we did not finish was boxed up and put into bags for us. The manager was actively walking around the restaurant, making sure that every guest were enjoying their dinner. The food was good all around but there are some dishes that outshine the rest. The ribeye and New York strip were very good. The butchers steak I got for my son and he didn't really like it, it was lacking flavor. If you do anything when you go, please make sure to get the biscuits. Hands down THE BEST BISCUITS I've ever had lol. They are the most flaky and buttery biscuits, you can count each layer that these have. Pro tip is to ask for butter and the house made jam. The pimento cheese is good with them but it becomes a little too decadent. Overall I'm happy we made the decision to come here, we will be back soon.

we were in and out in one hour thanks to how delicious this was. took a recommendation from a friend and got the garlic butter steak and salmon collar. both were great. the salmon collar is such value for the money, incredibly tender. the grilled carrots were sweet and in a nutty + balsamic sauce. the tartare was not as good as i thought it would be though vibes were also good -- not super stuck up but clearly had the choreography down.

For what it is: *Food is good *Service is also good, but my aunts had to educate our waiter on what the term "dirty rocks" meant when it comes to a martini, but he gave us good food suggestions. *Atmosphere screams date night I had the lamb which I have had very few times. I only order it when I think the restaurant can live up to its reviews. I am happy with my selection and was very tasty. I shared small bites with the family and they liked it to. My aunt ordered the Bobo Chicken, THAT is something that should be ordered if you come. What a bite! Tried some steak and really didn't wow me like the chicken, good though. Overall 4-5, I had a very good meal elsewhere earlier in the week so this didn't quite do it for me, but would still recommend coming.

Everything was really good! Started with the blue crab deviled eggs and beef tartare, then had the ax handle ribeye. Everything was flavorful and well prepared. Finished with an espresso martini--great meal all around! Had a nice dark inside and customer service was amazing.

WOWZA!!! We went to a special event: "Crawfish Broil" at St. Anselm on an early Sunday afternoon. The theme was featured on Resy and I'm so glad that we got tickets to this event. The decoration was the cutest. We were the first to arrive and had our assigned area with our names written on the table. All of the fixings were also ready hand wipes, lemon, remoulade, homemade hot sauce, Cajun garlic butter, and a bucket of course. We started with the best biscuit I've ever had with pimento cheese. The biscuit was fresh, hot, buttery and flaky and came with fresh pimento cheese. When I tell you they had me at biscuit, the biscuit alone is worth another trip. It was so fantastic we got some to go with their special jam. The crawfish came with a little guide to tell you how to open them (and a cracker if needed). We were fortunate to have two ladies from New Orleans at our table who were able to offer some guidance. The feast was brought out in large metal bowls by a team (including the chef) and it was all great. Crawfish, corn, sausage, shrimp and mussels. The portions were large and plentiful with drinks offered à la Carte. I didn't love my first drink so I switched to a Hugo spritz and my partner had the Hemingway daquiri. After 2 pours/portions of the crawfish boil we were tapped out. Our table mates ordered another round of biscuits and gave us a piece to dip in the butter and I melted again. Everything was so good! Also the staff was outstanding they were so accommodating and friendly. We will definitely be returning to St. Anselm soon for another meal.

We ordered the biscuits, oysters, pan fried mashed potatoes, and butcher's steak with a half bottle of their chateau de fleurie. Everything was delicious and I would order it again. We ordered the steak medium rare and it came closer to rare. Restaurant was busy at 7:30pm on a thursday. I recommend making a reservation. It was a bit loud. Service was amazing and so sweet!

Man, places like this need to duplicate as much as they can. St. Anselm did not disappoint from start to finish! I was a solo diner for this experience and sat at the bar. The bartenders were friendly, filled waters promptly and were fast. I came in about 5pm on a Saturday and there were only 5-6 other people at the bar, but the dining area was pretty full. This place has an almost pioneer-ish vibe with all of the taxidermy on the walls mixed with like your Uncle's cabin in the woods in the 60s. I was digging it. I started with the buttermilk biscuits and pimento cheese. Wow. I could have eaten all of them. The bartender and I agreed that it wasn't a good idea. He said he did it once. I also had a mint julep, and while I normally like them, this one was a little different. The presentation was cool, but the drink was all ice, which was disappointing. For dinner I had the Butcher's Steak, medium well (should have gotten medium) and the Brussels sprouts. I'm thinking about the leftovers now. The folks next to me ordered my exact meal because it looked so good. I will indeed return! Thanks, St. Anselm!

Salmon collar- good if you are ok with picking bones

Great time at St Anselm! My friend and I tried a number of dishes and everything was tasty. Started with the famous buttermilk biscuits with pimento cheese as well as butter/jam and the blue crab deviled eggs. My main was the salmon collar with a side of broccoli, my friend ordered the butcher's steak with side of carrots. Portions for the sides were enormous so we should have looked at pics beforehand. Ambience was very cool- we sat at the chef counter since it was just two of us but there was little interaction with the chefs so probably a regular table would have been better. Our waiter was really nice. He had a lot of tables and we didn't see him for a while but I suspect he was letting us chat. Overall dinner was very good and I would come back to try so other stuff.

St. Anselm Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - St. Anselm

What is the dress code do you wear fancy casual?

You can wear whatever you like. No judgements.

What is the outside like? They only have outdoor seating for most of their reservations but it's winter lol?

The outdoor set up is just tables outside I didn't see any heaters? I wouldn't sit outside in the cold

Is this kid friendly? I have a 1 yr old and an 11 yr old.

The restaurant itself is not un-friendly towards kids, but I would check out the menu to see if there are things that your kids would like to eat. We have a 9 and 12 year old and though we LOVED the food, we didn't think it would fit our 9 year…

Do they have outdoor heaters on the patio?

    Yes they do.

Are masks required at the table you're sitting at ? Or just to get around the restaurant?

They are not required while sitting at the table eating. They are required moving through out the restaurant and going to the restrooms o

    What is their corkage fee?

$25 per bottle, and the bottle can't be on their list (it's posted online)

Is this kid friendly for lunch or an early dinner?

Yes! The music can be a little loud but it is accepting of families

    Do you have happy hour?

No, no happy hour. But the bar opens at 4pm (an hour before dinner service) and stays open between brunch and dinner on weekends (3-5pm).

    Is there valet parking?

Nope. But there is ample free parking in and around the Union Market District area.

    Are there high chairs?

    Yes

How is the noise level at St. Anselms? Looking for a relaxed birthday dinner for 5 folks, one with hearing issues.

I went Friday for dinner and it was LOUD. Lol

First off, there seemed to be only one waiter handling around 7-8 tables. Tables on both sides of us were visibly getting frustrated with how slow the service was. We came to enjoy ourselves and weren't in a rush, so we didn't mind waiting as much, but the service was noticeably slow. Interestingly, the actual dishes came out fairly quickly, but everything else--ordering, drinks, checking in, and getting things we needed--took a long time. For a restaurant at this price point, I was also expecting the overall experience and atmosphere to feel a little more elevated. It didn't really feel particularly upscale or special, and the bathrooms were noticeably dirty, which was surprising and definitely took away from the experience. Overall, the food was decent, but between the understaffed service, cleanliness, and atmosphere, I didn't feel the experience matched the price. Restaurant Week is usually a great opportunity to try a higher-end restaurant and want to come back, but unfortunately I don't think I'd return at the regular menu prices.

I visited as part of the full experience -- dinner downstairs at Birch & Barley, then up to Churchkey for drinks -- and honestly, it's one of the best evenings I've had in DC. Churchkey itself is everything a great bar should be. The beer selection is absolutely unreal -- hundreds of carefully curated labels spanning every style, region, and flavor profile you can imagine. What sets it apart is that the staff actually knows the menu. Our server walked us through a few options based on what we liked and landed us on perfect picks both times. That kind of genuine expertise is rare. The tavern pizzas from the wood-fired oven were a wonderful surprise -- thin, crispy, and the perfect companion to a cold draft. The smash burger also deserves a mention: simple, well-executed, and hits the spot. The vibe is warm and lively without being overwhelming. Great for a date, a group, or even just sitting at the bar solo with a good beer and good conversation with the bartender. I sat at the bar and the bartender was friendly but busy restocking as it was towards the end of the day. I had the cheery old fashion as she promised it was one of their stronger drinks. I didn't find this to be true, it was actually overly sweet and tasted more like syrup. The second drink I picked was the bourbon bash. I thought this one would be sweet as it's made with different juices but it was actually on the stronger side. Definitely stronger and better than the Cherry old-fashioned. To snack on I went with the steak and cheese, eggrolls and bacon, blue cheese brussels sprouts. The egg rolls were great. Lots of flavor and the texture was spot on. The brussels sprouts were good for the most part. They did go a little overboard with the blue cheese for my tastebuds. My second visit was for a late breakfast. I started with an Irish coffee by recommendation of the bartender. It was a great way to start the day. It was strong enough but with the right balance. My breakfast plate didn't meet my expectations. My eggs were too running, bacon was chewy, toast was stale and the hash browns were only cooked on one side. I did ask for them to be crispy. I picked at it enough to curb my hunger.
