Our waitress was very friendly on top of it even though we ordered a big piece of steak she came and checked on us as it was cooking. Overall this is a very americana place I recommend it for dates, and a treat yourself place. My fiancé and I ordered the ax handle ribeye which we loved very much and it was cooked to perfection. The baby carrots we're not some thing we liked, but I believe it was a pallet thing over a dislike due to not well cooked. I'm sure somebody really likes them as they were cooked very well, but the seasoning was not our favorite. The mashed potatoes is delicious and I highly recommend ordering this when you go. My boyfriend turned down ramen for this place he knew of. I walked in and was in amazement at the cool decor (taxidermy animals above the bar). We sat at the chefs counter, and was immediately greeted by our wonderful server, Keith. We started off with the oysters which were amazing. Probably the best I've had. We also had the blue crab deviled eggs and okra. Both were also good. Finally we enjoyed the butchers steak and lamb leg steak. This place is absolutely amazing! I went here for brunch with a friend and we are definitely going to go back again. The buttermilk biscuits are as good as everyone keeps saying they are and are easy to share with around 3 people. I had the Butcher's Steak which was cooked to perfection. It was exactly how I wanted it. I'm not sure if it was the best I ever had, but I absolutely want it again and again. The drink menu is insane! They have everything for anyone which just adds to the brunch experience. Being a huge fan of cognac I was immediately drawn to the cognac punch. While it is advertised as serving 4-6 people, you can get a single serving like I did. It was delicious and flavorful. It was definitely the type of cognac drink that I wanted. Lovely meal for brunch this weekend at St Anselm's. It was my first visit and I'd love to return. We sat outside in one of the "heated" (I'll add very lightly heated and wouldn't want to sit out there on a cold night -- the sun coming through the window was the saving grace on not being frozen) rooms; other than the temp, I love these little private outdoor spaces. We started with Irish coffees (like I said, it was cold!) and an order of the biscuits. If I'd know what main I'd end up with, probably would have picked a less carb-forward app, but they (4 to an order) were still very tasty and accompanied by lovely flakes of salt and pimento cheese. For an entree I was deciding between steak and eggs and the chocolate chip pancakes with a side of bacon; since it is a steak house vibe, I assumed the server would recommend the steak and eggs but he very quickly/confidently told me to get the pancakes. I'm glad I did. They (3) were fluffy and delicious and the side of bacon (2 THICK pieces) was great too. I only ate about one pancake and one piece of bacon after my biscuit, because they were so rich. Of course I took the rest home because it was so tasty. Service was wonderful. read more

Great interior, good service, and yummy food that balances traditional and modern! I'd happily come back here again, but some dishes aren't worth repeating. St. Anselm opened soon after we moved away from NoMa, so it was fun to come back and check it out. We started with wine--Malbec for him and the Bolivian merlot for me. Both needed a chance to breathe, then we enjoyed them. This was my first time having a wine from Bolivia, so that's why I chose it, and it worked well with the food, even the rich steak (though really I should have switched to something bolder). The pours seemed rather skimpy, and we don't think it's just a perception from the glasses. But the sever was comfortable speaking about the wines, which was helpful. We started with 3 small plates, which was too much but we wanted to try what sounded especially good: lamb merguez sausage, scallops in a curry sauce, and a winter grilled squash salad. All three dishes were really good. My husband's favorite was the sausage. I really enjoyed the excellent flavors in the squash salad. The scallops had a nice smoky taste. We each got a butcher's steak, medium rare, and we added cream spinach, grilled broccoli, and beef fat roasted potatoes. The steaks were delicious! Some of mine was too rare, but I wasn't going to finish it all anyway, so I just saved those pieces to take home since I'd be able to reheat them without getting the steak too done. I loved the broccoli, and we both thought the spinach was the best of the sides. The potatoes were disappointing. They were too greasy and they had a bad mouth feel. I thought it might just not be a good choice with the buttery steak, but when I tried the leftovers this AM with some scrambled eggs I still found the flavor displeasing and the texture unpleasant. We were keen for some dessert, mostly chocolate I think, but the options were limited and unappealing for us. Why no rich chocolate dessert? This portion of the menu didn't live up to the modern take on classics that we found in the savory options. I saw lots of other good looking dishes going to other tables that I'll be keen to try in the future, especially the cauliflower and the chicken with mumbo sauce. Enjoy! read more

Excellent service and food. My ribeye was cooked to perfection. Biscuits, pig's head croquette and grilled oysters were excellent. Lively, noisy atmosphere which was fine for us but if you're looking for a quiet romantic dinner it might not be for you. I expected DC steakhouse prices and wasn't disappointed. Ribeye was $53, Butchers Cut (think Medium Rare's sliced hanger steak) was $38, lamb steak looked good and was a bargain at $28. For those prices add a scoop of creamed spinach and mashed potatoes- all sides were extra. Also drinks can really run up the price, wife had a classic Margarita (no special tequila)it was $20 - she had two so with tax and tip that's $52 for two drinks. I know everyone has their own financial situation but $850 for a party of six might not make it an every week place. read more

Came here last night for a friend's birthday party. We were pretty much the worst customers imaginable, reservation was for 6 we showed up with 10. They were able to accommodate the change, the service was flawless, our server was knowledgeable on the menu and made excellent recommendations, handled the large party without issue while maintaining their other tables in the section. I can't recommend the biscuits and pimento cheese enough for a starter, the steak tar tar was spicy and the bread was perfectly toasted, and of course the steak was cooked perfectly. I would happily come back here anytime, of course with a correct count on our reservation. read more

3.5 stars Interesting decor - look out for the bear by the bathroom. Service was attentive and friendly - I was seated before my friend arrived, which I appreciated. They have quite an extensive cocktails and wine menu with several wines on tap, which is fun. For the smaller things, we got the radish with foie butter, which cake with two slices of buttery toasted bread. The flavor of the foie butter with the flaky salt was decadent, but the radishes were an awkward shape to try to put on the toast (not thinly sliced as I'd expected) and some pieces retained more of the thick outer skin, which made it impossible to chew. The biscuits come four to an order, are incredibly flaky and are accompanied by a generous helping of pimento cheese. The texture and flavor of the biscuits were top notch, and also made a useful device for spreading the rest of the foie butter on. The salmon collar was on the "smalls" side of the menu, but was absolutely giant! Definitely enough for an entree or for four people to split for an app. Beautifully cooked, flavorful and oh so tender. I would get this and the biscuits again. From the large plates we got the whole mackerel (well cooked, head happily intact, rich flavor cut by capers) and the rib eye since they seem known for their steaks. When the steak came, it was rather thin and when we cut into it, it was well done rather than medium as we'd requested. When I pointed it out to the server, the kitchen took care of it right away and multiple people fussed over us to make sure the new steak was to our liking. Though seasoned well, the redone one wasn't the best rib eye I've ever had and I think I'd skip a steak next time. The two of us were already losing steam when the entrees hit the table so we said no to dessert, but they still brought out a small dish of pineapple sorbet, which was a nice refreshing end to our food coma inducing meal. What can I say, but WOW! Never would have thought that this food was as good as it was. I just wanted a steak off the beaten path and this place did not disappoint. They have these biscuits that are made to order that come with a Pimento cheese (Which I do not like before coming here), so I asked for just plain butter. Once the biscuits and butter and cheese arrived, I tried the pimento cheese and was hooked! My goodness it was so damn delicious. I ordered a Ribeye with a side of Pan Fried Mashed Potatoes. The steak and eggs were disappointing (look at the pic...tiny steak morsels does not a steak make!) and the mushroom omelette was so rich I felt like I might have a stroke from eating it. 4.5 stars. In sum, fantastic steaks, huge portions, great dessert, good drinks, great mood lighting, very loud, a bit pricey. Here's a quick rundown: BAR: Excellent cocktails & wines, uncomfortable seating. Had the Amaro Sour, which is like a Pisco Sour and was simply amazing (& includes Zacapa 23yo rum) and a Lambrusco. Fantastic. They should have chairs with backs, though. APPS: Had the Merguez sausage and Salmon collar. Both were phenomenal, and the salmon was enormous. Definitely only need to share one next time. MAINS: Flat Iron steak ($24) and Ribeye ($46). The flat iron was very flavorful, and the ribeye was very good. Both were big (ribeye def. moreso, at 16oz). Given the price difference, I would go for the flat iron next time. I really liked the creamed spinach as well. Beef fat potatoes were a little too much for me - too much extra flavor in the parmesan. ATMOSPHERE: Very loud, which takes away from the date-night ambience one might hope for. And we went on a Monday! But the low lighting and decor was great, and I liked the open kitchen - that always keeps restaurants cleaner. SERVICE: Excellent. They decanted our wine, were very attentive, honest, and not pretentious (the waiters wear t shirts - totally fine for me). DESSERT: Wow. If this is still on the menu and you decide to order it, just keep that in mind to slow down when eating this deliciousness. *Filet mignon- wife ordered this and she loved every bite of it. This made the list of one of the best meals I've had in 2018. On a whim, I popped in after leaving a neighboring bar and I'm very glad I did. I got there about an hour after they opened and was able to grab a solo seat at the bar. Although it was mid-week, and perhaps due to the limited dining options on that block, it did get pretty full and rather quickly shortly afterwards. Or...it could simply be because the food is damn delicious. The decor is cool too. Very masculine and stately but not stuffy...unless you look up and notice the taxidermy at the bar. The bartenders were attentive and helpful and got me started with the Brandy Cocktail which is a boozy but tasty drink. For dinner I had the Lamb Sirloin with salsa verde which was cooked so perfectly it sort of melted in my mouth. (Note for the future: I'll order it medium rare instead of medium in case I can't finish it again and want to reheat). I also got the Grilled Carrots (sweet with the tiniest hint of spice - not heat) and the pan-fried mashed potatoes (great fluffy texture). St. Anselm has been on my radar for a while as one of the many new restaurants populating the improved Union Market area recently. I dined with two friends. We were seated promptly at an outward facing booth which was cozy but a little awkward for three people. It was either sit far from each other in either end or sit shoulder to shoulder. Our waiter was great throughout the whole experience and we liked the decoration. We started with wine and the Hemingway Daiquiri which was tart but well balanced. I decided to splurge for the ribeye while my friends got the Butcher's cut. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't something I couldn't cook at home. On the other hand, the Butcher's steaks were a great size and better seasoned than the ribeye. I regretted my decision and warn others that bigger is not always better. The sides were a highlight. The whole roasted cauliflower was delicious, I loved the tahini on it especially. The smashed potatoes were covered in garlic, and the Steak fries were very well cooked and came with a delicious creamy dill sauce. To finish, we all had the ice cream cake. While visually stunning and a large portion, we didn't feel the flavor of it was that great. Think flavorless ice cream with store brand chocolate sauce. We would have appreciated a more elevated ice cream cake rather than something you'd serve to a kindergartener. We shared the port flight as an after dinner tasting, and were pleasantly surprised at the presentation, which included beautiful glassware and vintage name tags. The post cards at the end of the meal were also a cute touch. Overall, I'll definitely be coming back here as I thought the price of steak and sides were pretty reasonable. I will just make sure to avoid the ribeye next time and stick to a smaller cut. read more

Went here while in Union Market area. Had a to wait about an hour because the restaurant was that popular. They had lots of seating but much of it was outside in heated huts. Due to the weather we opted to wait for inside. We didn't know it was brunch so the menu was limited. We enjoyed steak and eggs, biscuits with pimento, pancakes, blue crab deviled eggs, fries and, of course, bloody marys. The food was really very good. The fries were some of the beat i have had. The ambiance was very nice, not too loud and the environment was very cozy. Our waiter was a little off his mark because he kept forgetting things ordered but he made up for it with his attitude and acknowledging his mistakes. The only real negative was that both cold water handles were broken in the womens restroom forcing the use of fairly hot water. Had a child with us so not good. I would definitely go back but would prefer a broader menu as one of us doesn't eat beef and most of the choices involved beef. read more

This is by far one of the more memorable dining experiences in Washington DC of late. As context, I came here for brunch and ordered brunch foods. First off the ambiance is terrific - it has a niche historical feel, but in a bit of a trendy and accessible history feel (not the stuffy annoying history type) which oozes Americana in a very inviting class way. The food - wow everything was simply terrific - from the Monkey Brain cake to the steak and eggs - everything was just so flavorful and on point! The bar - beyond just looking great - they have so many exciting cocktails to offer! We tried two, both were fun and classy. The service - had a robust neighborly feel and super nice and friendly! ***Once again this is a situation I wish allowed 1/2 stars because St. Anselm is 4.5 stars all the way with one issue I had that can't allow it that coveted extra star for 5 stars.*** I had been searching for a decent (ie:7-8pm) dinner reservation time on a Friday or Saturday evening at St. Anselm for several weeks and was unsuccessful until, on a whim, I checked this past Thursday and low and behold a 7:30pm time slot appeared. I snatched it up quickly and then proposed to my husband to meet there on Friday evening. On our last free weekend before welcoming baby, I was uncomfortable, tired, and feeling antisocial BUT I really wanted to try out St. Anselm and my food priorities took over. We arrived about 15 minutes early and were told we would be seated closer to our reservation time. I HIGHLY recommend reservations at peak dining times as we saw several parties be turned away without them. There is a bar area for waiting or dining sans reservations but it was consistently crowded the entire time we were there (until almost 9pm) so I'd suggest grabbing a drink at Bidwell or just waiting it out in the hella small waiting area if you don't have much time to kill. The ambiance is upscale tavern-y: lots of dark wood, dim lighting, stuffed ducks, raccoons, etc. , and shriner's hats along the upper echelons of the bar. We were seated in a nice, semi-round booth that could have easily held 5 adults so it was nice to have it all to ourselves. The atmosphere was not stuffy and was very welcoming. Our server was Peter (I made sure to grab his name off our receipt) and he was AMAZING! 5 stars for service (more if I could give them!). He was attentive, friendly, not pushy with upselling or pushing drinks (on my husband since I clearly cannot imbibe), efficient, and generally helpful with ensuring we had a wonderful date night! Our waters were always kept full if not by Peter by one of the several food runners that delivered food, cleared plates, and refilled beverages. Managers were visible walking around and were attentive to ensure a fabulous dining experience! I wish I could have had some drinks but the drink menu is extensive and intriguing! I'd love to return to share a punch bowl with friends! Cocktails, beers, ciders, and wines were a plenty along with a detailed whiskey and bourbon list. The dinner menu includes the usual: appetizers, small plates, salads, proteins, and sides. The entrees are served a la carte, so I'd recommend getting some sides for the table for accompaniments. My husband and I decided to share the lamb sirloin with salsa verde and the flat iron with garlic butter. I wanted to order medium rare, but my husband insisted we should do medium since that whole "no rare meat while pregnant thing" (although at over 39 weeks I'm sure it'd be fine but I decided to appease him). The flat iron came out a perfect medium-pink but not raw, very tender and flavorful (even without the garlic butter), and I loved the slightly charred outside. The portion was perfect in size. This was the favorite meat hands down. The lamb sirloin was a smaller portion. My issue with the pre-sliced lamb was that at medium, it was very raw in some of the pieces and was cooked more rare than even medium rare let alone the requested medium. It was very chewy too, and could have used more salsa verde as the actual meat lacked flavor. My husband ended up eating most of it since it was mostly rare, so that was disappointing. This dish is the sole reason I cannot give St. Anselm 5 stars. I highly recommend kitchen staff try to be more cognizant of temp requests with this dish. For sides we shared the steak fries served with ranch and the beef fat fried potatoes with parmesan. The steak fries were a generously large portion, and we both appreciated the very light salting on them. The dill ranch was delicious for dipping! The beef fat fried potatoes were a smaller portion but still hearty. I loved the hint of lemon zest drizzled on top along with the parmesan and garlic. We decided to splurge on dessert which i cannot recommend more! Must, must, must get the ice cream cake (vanilla and brownie ice creams, chocolate crunchies)!!!! The piece is HUGE so I'd recommend splitting one slice amongst two people. This brought me back to childhood when I used to get an ice cream cake every year for my birthday, except this one was richer, creamier, and the icing tasted less processed. What a sweet way to end a delicious meal! I thought our meal, overall, was incredibly delicious and satisfying! I would surely order the flat iron again but I'd pass on the lamb sirloin. I would also definitely end with the ice cream cake too! The overall value is very reasonable ($82 for our meal), but of course gets pricey when you add in alcohol. I would say St. Anselm is NOT kid friendly, so I will not be back for awhile, BUT I highly recommend to anyone who is looking for a special date night or a group dinner with friends! read more

This has to be a new favorite. My girlfriend had a milestone birthday coming up so it was up to me to find a great place to take her. I like to be the one to find new places that she has to yet to check out. That can be tough since she grew up in this area and I didn't, so I turned it the trusty Yelp app to assist in my search. I did my research checking reviews and the menu, etc. I went back and forth between several other restaurants but always coming back to this one. The problem being every time I went to OpenTable to check for open reservations there weren't any for the specific day I needed. I did one last check late in the week and Voila! a time slot opened up!! Off to St. Anselm we went. Our table wasn't quite ready so I headed to the bar to grab us some drinks. That area is a bit tight, so I tried to find a good spot where I would be noticed by a bartender. By the time I was able to receive my two drinks and pay the tab, our table was ready. We were greeted by our pleasant server, Ed. We had already figured out, for the most part, what we were going to order but he said he had some menu items to discuss. Because of that we held off ordering to see if he had something better to offer. Turns out he just wanted to breakdown the menu layout for us. King Crab Leg: As you can see in the photo, it was two decent sized legs with a good amount of meat and a delicious vessel of melted butter goodness. The meat was fantastic. Flat Iron Steak: We ordered this Medium and it arrived cooked perfectly, accompanied by more delicious butter. It was so darn delicious. I could've ordered a second one! The main items are a la carte, so of course you have to get a side. We questioned possibly the grilled broccoli, but settled on the crispy beef fat potatoes. Basically like a small crispy potato round. They came "mouth wateringly" seasoned in a bowl. Oh my yum! This was a birthday celebration, so we did something we rarely do and that was order desert. I'm not really a steakhouse person because of the massive proportions and extremely high prices. But St. Anselm was a very unique type of steakhouse because prices were reasonable and there were a variety of dishes you could eat if you didn't want to eat steak. The ambiance is super cool. Looks like an old industrial building with brick walls and a historic vibe that was really nice. It was a type of steakhouse you can casually dress to. My friends and I got a significant amount of dishes.... but it was perfect because I got a little taste of everything! - BUTTERMILK BISCUITS: wowie! I don't even want to know how much butter they put because it was very very delicious. Comes with a side of pimento cheese. In my mind it was a bit too salty but a great combination with the biscuits. Comes with 4 biscuits. (Id definitely order since they don't bring side bread to nibble on) - BLUE CRAB DEVILED EGGS: another wowie! So good. You wouldn't imagine yourself to order deviled eggs but I would highly recommend them. - SALMON COLLAR: a massive piece of salmon (with fish bones unfortunately). very very delicious. Honestly this could have been the main dish for me because the proportion was very filling. - SKIRT STEAK: grilled with sungold tomato vinaigrette... yes please! We ordered ours medium rare and it cut like butter. It was soo tender and delicious. Not too salty. It was perfect. - PORK PORTERHOUSE: sooo tender and delicious as well. If you don't like a sweet dressing over the pork... I wouldn't recommend it. It has a sweet taste to it and in my opinion it was pleasant but not my fave. - PAN FRIED MASHED POTATOES: definitely get this. Was bomb - CAULIFLOWER: our least favorite item on the menu. This massive cauliflower covered in tahini and other stuff but no actual taste inside of it. They kindly managed to replace it with the grilled carrots. - GRILLED CARROTS: topped with pesto. It was a bit salty for my taste! Overall, phenomenal experience. Most of the dishes were very delicious and staff was very kind to me and the other guests I came with. read more

What an amazing find! Who knew this charming and upscale dining option existed just steps away from Union Market!? St. Anselm is the perfect date night or business lunch spot that you'll want to return to again and again. There was a lot of thought and care put into the menu and design of this restaurant. It is a true experience from start to finish. The entrance and outside decor is eye catching and sets the space apart from the unfinished, industrial surroundings. The lights and brick facade are the perfect backdrop for group photos or social media influencers! There is an outdoor patio that, when warmer, would be a wonderful spot to people watch sip a specialty cocktail. The indoor decor is a throwback to the wild west mixed with a slick, city tavern vibe. The dining space is surrounded by Americana flags, 19th century portraits, and taxidermy. You'll feel as if you are stepping back in time until you take a look at the open kitchen that resembles that of high-end New York city restaurants. The food is fantastic and the service enhances the experience. Since it was our first time at St. Anselm we asked for recommendations and items that shouldn't be skipped. We dutifully followed our servers advice and tried the blue grab deviled eggs, cucumber salad, and oysters. Everything was super flavorful and creatively plated. The cucumber salad was the greatest surprise of them all. What sounded simple and rather boring was a great surprise. Although most of the ingredients were simple, the blend of vegetables with the whipped cheese and topped with the perfect amount of crunch from the granola made for a truly delicious experience. The drinks were also a hit with our group and the selection was almost overwhelming. There is even an in house sommelier if you are interested in trying a variety of wines or want to buy specific bottles. The only area of improvement for St. Anselm that I can see is the addition of happy hour or some kind of drink/food specials. The prices are a bit on the high end. While this is a wonderful spot for a long dinner, it isn't necessarily a place conducive to group events, after work team drinks, or a quick spot to stop in after a trip exploring Union Market. read more

I was here from my first visit on 1/18/19 at 6:30. It was cold outside. So my first impression was the very warm foyer. That was nice as I waited for my two cousins to arrive. I started my evening with a vodka martini at the bar which I found to be well balanced. I noticed immediately the atmosphere, which was inviting. The staff from the door to the bar to our table made me feel special....like they were glad I was there. The woman who took care of use was very knowledgeable about the menu and could talk to use intelligently about our selections. I had the King Crab. Devon has the pheasant. Tracie had the salmon. For the money the salmon was the best deal and boy was it delicious! I tried some of the pheasant which was also delicious. So we decided to order a bottle of win and our server suggested we talk to the sommelier. SOMMELIER!!!! I was like they - THEY TRYING TO GET FOUR STARS!!! He came over and I began with I would like a Syrah! Tracie wanted a blend....we always have this battle. So the Sommelier says, "I can do that" he began explaining the different selections from which we Domaine d' Eole! Look, I'll just refer you to the attached photos. Had dinner last night outside in a nice little booth. Second restaurant I've been to since C-19 started. Disappointed in the service and the sides were cold. The biscuits, and the deviled eggs were fantastic appetizers. The steak and fish were excellent portions for the money and taste. The broccoli was cold and the sweet potato was as well. Didn't want to complain because wanted to eat them with our entrees. Probably would of been a better choice to eat inside but part of my party was not comfortable. The vibe in this in this restaurant is sultry meets Presidential Antique and this description won't make sense until you visit it for yourself... if you call ahead definitely request a booth with curtains! It heightens the experience so that it's just you, your dinner guests, and a blacked out portrait of a President with low approval ratings (Ulysses S. Grant, apparent victorious commanding civil war hero but heavily critiqued while in the White House...I was unaware) Moving on to the food... the biscuits are heavenly. We were seated 15 minutes late and our server brought them to us on the house. They were perfectly buttery and one of the best biscuits I've ever had. The cauliflower had this popped popcorn vibe that everyone enjoyed. The steak and lamb were fabulous as well. Just a great dining experience all around and if you haven't been its worth heading out to Union Market for. We hit up cotton and reed for some fabulous rum drinks after that blew the Coconut Club out of the water! read more

Let me begin by saying this was my first but not my last time here. Due to reservations and limited seating we sat at the area overseeing the kitchen. Best seat in the house. We saw the collaboration of everyone working from garde manger to grill, sauté and quarterbacking. The communication was impeccable with the team. I live in New York but my sister lives walking distance from Union market so any time I'm in DC we must go for brunch. She chose St. Anselm because it had just opened. We went Oct 27th around 11:15.(sorry so late with my review but it's been a hectic couple of months). Anywhooo it was a rainy morning which was perfect for a nice tasty warm stick-to-your-ribs kind of brunch day. When we arrived we were greeted by a hostess who sat us immediately. These booths were so cool. Almost like we were on the polar express. We had our own little section with coat hooks and everything. It wasn't terribly crowded and it felt very homey. From the different rugs on the floor to the unique items adorning the walls. Our server came by and introduced herself immediately and gave us our menus. My mom, one of my sisters and I ordered drinks. My Mom ordered a local IPA. My sister & I got the one of the signature mixed drinks. I don't remember the name of either, but they were both nice and refreshing. For starters we got the Blue Crab Deviled Eggs & Cinnamon Roll Monkey Bread. The deviled eggs had great, fresh, lump crab meat. although tasty, they were nothing to write home about. I was looking for a little more punch and they just didn't have it. But this Monkey Bread took me right back to my childhood when we would make it with mom in the kitchen. It was NUMMAH NUMMAZ! (drooling just thinking about it) Next, we ordered our meal. My mom eats like a bird, so she got the Grilled Heritage Bacon. I chose the Salmon Collar with the Charred Corn Grits (which she shared). One sister ordered the Monster Prawn & Creamy Spinach and my baby sister got the Fried Oysters & Grits. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!!!!! EVERYTHING WAS PHENOMENAL. My salmon was cooked to perfection and seasoned perfectly. it was so soft and delicate and went perfectly with the grits. THESE GRITS THO! (small disclaimer my family is from Alabama & North Carolina. we know a few things about grits). The chefs at ST. Anselm must hang with harry potter because sorcery is the only way I know how to explain why they tasted so good. SLAP YO MAMMA GOOD! perfect amount of corn, salt, butter & magic...YUMMMMM!!!! My sister's prawn was huge...i.e. "Monster" and it tasted like they caught it while we were placing the order. The spinach was so good It gave me a better understanding of Popeye... LOL (I'm HERE all day) Now the Fried Oysters & Grits. The layers of flavors in this dish from the poached egg to the oysters to the grits (which I've already discussed) made the perfect marriage with my taste buds. I'm really pissed I didn't try the bacon but y'all I HAD NO MORE ROOM :( All I have to say is mom packed up the half she didn't finish and her and my sisters fought over it later that day. I can't wait for my next trip to DC to try lunch/dinner. It was my first trip but absolutely won't be my last. P.S.
