    Chocolate hazelnut cake with figs

Not sure where the negativity and poor reviews are coming from. My experience was great. Friendly server, great value hh, and no weird smells or heat (it was 80s and sunny outside). Most importantly the food was excellent from the oysters to the sides and prime rib. Also tried the Wisconsin fish fry which was not oily but flaky and lovely. Cakes were distinct: hazelnut chocolate and spiced carrot cake were top notch. Honestly overall on par with Bavettes or any other top steak house in Chicago.

Pre-meal: Reservations are advised and are done through Tock. Valet parking available at Aviary or Swift & Sons. Enter through Roister and then down one flight of stairs. Room: Cool Wisconsin supper club vibes! Long bar leads to small dining room. Comfy chairs and tufted banquettes. Picture-taking: Moderate lighting is ok. Beverages: Curated classic supper club cocktails include delicious brandy old-fashioned. There are WBTG and bottles, and a house mocktail. Happy hour is before 6 pm and there are drink specials and discounted oysters (raw and Rockefeller). Menu: Classic supper club items with some upgrades. Prime rib is the main attraction but there are non meat choices. Upgrades include Yorkshire pudding instead of rolls and Robuchon pommes puree instead of mashed potatoes. Food: We had several appetizers. The oysters Rockefeller were delicious - I'm often disappointed by this dish but theirs was really really good - so juicy and succulent. Fried cheese curds are never bad but these were particularly good and so was the house made hot sauce. Crab cakes were tasty. Deviled eggs ($15 each) were good but sticker shock prevented complete enjoyment. Entrees were also very good. Prime rib (from Australian wagyu) was predictably delicious. The cod fish & chips were excellent - as good as any I've had. Pan roasted salmon was perfect. Schnitzel was overcooked and missing the crispy puffy crust. Yorkshire pudding was great as was the Caesar salad. Desserts were good. Carrot cake was a small portion but was tasty and spiced differently (star anise?). Grasshopper pie was ok - the Oreo crust was very tough - difficult to cut through it. Service: Attentive and knowledgeable. Price: $$$$ Value: 2 out of 10 Summary: Expensive upgraded supper club with very good food.

Don't be fooled by the Alinea Group moniker- St Clair is a restaurant with potential that it doesn't live up to. We had the oysters, prime rib, horseradish sauce, mushrooms, carrots, and grasshopper pie. The food was good but with only one entree on the menu (Prime Rib) attached to the name of a celebrated chef it wasn't the "greatest" prime rib. The sides were mediocre. If you've been to true Midwestern Supper Clubs in northern Wisconsin you will be disappointed by the food and you'll be paying West Loop prices for that let down. The service was very good, staff friendly and attentive. Decor / Ambience is nice, though again, it seemed like they didn't "nail" the theme they were trying for. The open concept kitchen left all my clothes smelling like frying oil upon leaving. Location is very good in the heart of the West Loop, easy valet and garages are nearby. All and all, I wouldn't prioritize going back but would try it again if someone really wanted to- just avoiding "fish fry Fridays" for the sake of my dry cleaning bill.

Restaurant is located under the roister restaurant, enter that restaurant and the host will guide you downstairs. Reservations are a must as the space is small. Our server was super informative about the menu! Happy hour deals are awesome! Fresh oysters for $2! And these dirty martinis was delish! The real star was the prime rib....it is amazing! Order each of the sauces for the prime rib, my fav was the bernaise sauce and the peppercorn sauce. Order the Yorkshire pudding to sop up the juices! Sides were tasty, potatoe purée and creamed spinach. Wedge salad was also good! Desserts fell very flat. The grasshopper pie was pretty to look at but very very minty. Could just be me but it was too much mint. The whipped cream and Oreo crust was delicious though! Now the chocolate cake. We wanted to like it but it was incredibly dry. Very crumbly and dry. Not a good chocolate cake. But the rest of the meal was delish!!

It's not that the food is bad, but it's not great. It's only ok. There are many restaurants that have ok food. Like TGI Fridays, or olive garden, but they don't charge the kind of money for their food that this place does. I spent $350.00 for myself and a friend. We got apps drinks and the prime rib with sides. There wasn't anything that really stood out as great. It wasn't bad, just not worth the price. I kind of feel ripped off, and I will never go back again.

English cut prime rib, Robuchon potatoes, caramelized mushrooms, Yorkshire puddings
    Sunipa K.

It pains me to not give this a higher rating bc the food and drinks were SPECTACULAR. One of the best prime ribs I've ever had, mostly bc the jus was so flavorful and more like a sauce than most other jus that are kind of thin and watery. We had shrimp cocktail and mushroom soup for apps (both super yummy), and then shared the English cut along with caramelized mushrooms (next level amazing) and the Robuchon potatoes (decadent and delicious if not a bit too salty). Also had Yorkshire puds but were so full that they were barely touched. Brandy old fashioneds were *chef's kiss* BUT. The ambience almost ruined the whole thing. First off, it's tiny and is in Roister's basement. So no windows or light. And you're kind of shoe-horned in there, so if you're remotely claustrophobic then forget about even trying this place. Next, it was soooo hot in there. I, and many other patrons, were fanning ourselves with our menus. And it wasn't even remotely hot outside. And worst off, the place REEKED of oil. Like an old fried chicken place. Because you're basically sitting in the kitchen, the odor just wafts over to you. My hair still smells like old frying oil. All in all, I would rather go to Roister and try to order the food off the St Clair menu lol

Brussel Sprouts (undercooked and a bit too sour)

This is a great hidden gem below Roister (all owned by the Alinea Group) and really captures the feel of driving through Wisconsin and pulling over to a bar-style supper club. The kitchen table seating is AWESOME and highly recommended for solo visitors or couples (more than that and you can't all talk to one another since you sit side-by-side). Be sure to avoid sitting in front of the stove area where it can get very hot. The food here was so home-cooking-delicious, that we'll easily come back when we save up more cash, haha... Our bill was over $400, so a place like Wildfire could serve up similar food for less, but then again, it wouldn't be the same incredible version for a few items (see my pics for winners and losers). The prime rib had an incredible sauce glazing the service plate while my roasted 4-star mushrooms (side) and mushroom soup (appetizer) were so good, I was thinking about them on the ride back home, LOL... Watch out for the brussel sprouts; ours were nearly raw and too much vinegar was used, so raw *and* sour. You can always take em' home and finish cooking them, so no loss, but for a $400 bill, they *could* at least cook them. Oh! They can serve drinks from Roister here, but surprisingly, the drinks are kind-of-sort-of... average? We've had many better Wisconsin-style "Brandy Old Fashioned Sweet" cocktails elsewhere. Otherwise, this place is our little secret, m'kay? Don't tell others! ;-D

St. Clair Supper Club's draw is definitely the experience. Tucked away in the basement of Roister, you'd never know there was another dining spot there! Upon entering, you are led into a sort of meat and potatoes speak easy. There are a number of tables in the back of the room, the main dining space is the counter/bar that faces the kitchen. The staff is preparing meals right in front of you! The menu is limited to prime rib and sides. So if you are looking for something else, you're in the wrong spot. While the prime rib was good, I was expecting more. The tower of onion rings was impressive. Overall, I'd come back but only if others in my party wanted to check out the space. Definitely worth a try, which is why we came!

The waitress had informed us that a single is a double, a double is a triple, etc! Opted for a single with bacon as an add on and it was delectable. The thick pieces of bacon were truly the cherry on top. It comes with a slice of pickle. Additional sides, including fries, are extra. We unconventionally got an omelette.. but let's just say it was one of the fluffiest omelettes I've had-- not your classic breakfast omelette. Inside are roasted peppers and cheese. It's dimly lit inside to set the vibe. Service was quick and the staff were friendly. They have a QR code on the table linked to your check that you can use to pay or a check can be requested instead.

I planned to dine at Au Cheval for Sunday lunch and unfortunately there weren't any reservations available on Resy for lunchtime when I checked. Of note, Resy charges $2.50 per person to book the reservation which does not go towards the bill. After looping around for parking and finding a metered spot, I checked in at the restaurant shortly after 11:30am and was told I was 28th in line and the host could not quote a wait time due to the inclusion of online reservations. I thought that was a bit odd so I ended up walking around to explore the surrounding businesses. I finally received a text that my table was ready around thirty minutes later. The restaurant itself is not big but gives off an old fashioned vibe which I guess correlated with the type of food served. I ordered a single cheeseburger, a side of thick cut peppered bacon, and a side of French fries. I figured it was more economical to order a side of bacon rather than adding it to my burger so I can eat as much or as little as I wanted. The food came around fifteen minutes later. The burger itself did not look as big on the plate as I expected, although it was apparent how thick the two hamburger patties were. Since everyone was raving about the burger I had high expectations which unfortunately were not met. The burger tasted like a burger found at any average diner across the country. The bacon pieces were thick and flavorful but I don't think they elevated the burger as much as I'd like. Also, I wished there were cheese options rather than offering only American cheese which is probably the cheapest cheese that can be added on a burger. The fries reminded me of In-N-Out fries but the fries at the bottom of the cup were way too salty as if all the salt was added to the bottom of the cup instead of trickling down after being sprinkled on the fries on top. Considering all the hype about Au Cheval and the claims that their cheeseburger is one of the best burgers in the country or world, I was very underwhelmed. If this burger were to represent the Chicago food scene on a national level, it should rank lower than several other major cities in the United States.

The halibut. This was very delicious. Somehow the blueberry nuoc cham works? The fish was tender and flaky. The sauce was salty and full of umami with a hint of blueberry sweetness. This fish dish made me crave for a bowl of steaming hot bfluffy white rice. The string beans. Unless you are allergic to nuts, this is a must get dish. Perfectly cooked string beans (still crispy but not raw) sautéed with fish sauce vinaigrette was an absolute delight. It's also on the salty side which made me crave rice but it's such a flavor bomb. The cashews provided a contrast in texture but yet complemented the seemingly simple dish. I wish the portions were bigger. The galbi. It's was good but compared to the first 2 dishes, didn't really wow me. The meat was one rib strip (4 rib bones) cut into 4 pieces so it's a rather small portion for the price. The stone fruit slices was a nice pairing in that it provided a sweet and tart contrast to the heavier meat flavor. After trying this dish, I felt I personally prefer the LA galbi marinade flavor and preparation for short ribs. Overall, I'm glad I got to try this place.
