I am not sure why there are so many low reviews. My boyfriend and I dined here for our 4 year anniversary and had excellent service and a tasty meal. This place made me feel at home in the Midwest! The ambiance reminded me of fancy steak houses my family used to go to when I was a kid. The food was absolutely delicious. The Alinea group knocked this one out of the park (per usual!). The service was great to boot, and a very cool experience to watch our meal prepared in the open kitchen environment. I really, really wanted to love this place. Space: Small, noisy, active, loud music, fun crowd Food: Excellent Quality, Great Prime Rib Cuts, nice traditional sides, accompaniments and desserts Cocktails: Traditional with a spin Pros: Excellent Food Quality. Prime Rib Cuts were perfect, no bone and not as fatty as most restaurant prime rib. Perfectly cooked to medium rare and very flavorful. Cocktails were very good and they had a really nice wine list with some less known but lovely wines and vintages. Yorkshire Pudding was the best I have ever had. Sides were traditional, nice compliments. Desserts were limited but tasted very good. Our server was lovely and just the right amount of attentive. Now for the Cons: Nothing was hot except the Yorkshire Pudding and not just lukewarm either, tepid at best. The beautiful Green Beans were so overly salted they were almost inedible. With a simplified menu/format, chef driven environment like this, these mistakes were glaring and really pretty unforgiveable. Had to make and pay a holding fee on Tock for a reservation for 4, even though there were only ever going to be three of us. May try it again in the wintertime with the hope that something as elementary at this price point and reputation as serving warm food would not be discounted. read more

I was disappointed. First, I was disappointed that they don't allow parties of 2 to sit at a table. Rather, we had to sit at the bar. I don't have anything against sitting at a bar, but it's not how I want to eat a nice dinner. The bartenders were friendly enough, but I would rather be able to see the person I am sitting with than watch the bartender wash glasses. I was also disappointed in the prime rib. It was okay, but it wasn't as good as the prime rib that I had at a supper club in Wisconsin a few weeks ago for a fraction of the cost. Perhaps my expectations were too high, but this is not a supper club. The setting is upgraded coffee shop with a bar. No tablecloths. Food was good, not special. Overdressed caesar salad very spicy, though OK for me. Prime rib was good, but really no better than other restaurants that serve it. Yorkshire pudding was tasty, but very dry. Veggie sides were OK. Creamed spinach was very salty. Bread service seemed to be precious. Had to ask several times for OK parker house rolls. At this price level, I doubt we'd come back. We did have good waiter, who advised us to split the small salad 3 ways. He was right; it was huge. read more

There was a private event at Roister going on when I arrived and the hostess walked me past that and downstairs to St. Clair Very friendly staff from end to end of my visit I was seated at the bar and had a nice view of the kitchen in action Classy crowd at this place I ordered the St. Clair cut, expectation being 18 ounces The slab of meat that was placed in front of me was at least 4 inches thick and more like 24+ ounces Everyone that saw it was like , whoa, that is a piece of meat My waiter said that is not how they usually come out of the kitchen The roast was perfectly cooked at super tasty I guess I will have a couple of extra bonus meals read more

I'm from Wisconsin I know Supper Clubs and Meat. This place is excellent. Prime Rib is perfectly seasoned just enough to bring out the beef flavor. Au Jus is a house recipe that really ties it all together. We had the cream corn and 50/50 mashed potatoes it was basically a desert it was so good. Prime Rib is best I've had, period. Au jus is not au jus, it is some kind of wine sauce, the drink selection is very limited and the sides overpriced. This is in no way a traditional supper club. The service was very aggressive with trying to turn the table. We felt very rushed even after we asked for some time to share our drink. The server came to take our food order and one of us hadn't even received his drink. The supper club vibe is really lacking! Supper clubs offer relish trays , piano tunes, wine by the glass! I've never been to a restaurant where wine can only be purchased by the 1/2 bottle or full bottle? The menu is limiting. Our menu choice was prime rib with everything ala cart the sauces are $2.00 each. The other food choice was a meat Italian dish. No salad or vegetarian choice. As far as the prime rib, flavor was good but the portions are very small for a supper club concept. One bit of advice to for this restaurant owner and wait staff is to visit a Wisconsin supper club and take notes....revamp your idea of a supper club or drop that off your brand! I'm just saying! Given the track record of the Alinea Group, we were really eager to try this place. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to our expectations. The first problem is that the only protein offered is prime rib. We knew this going in and we both love prime rib, so the idea of it didn't seem like an issue. However, in practice the concept is not one that would bring us back. Salmon was offered as a special that night and it looks like they will be offering a different special each night. So, unless you and your dining partners are into one of those items .... Second, there are no wines offered by the glass. To make matters worth, the only other alcoholic options are 3 cocktails. As dining experiences go, this is not an ideal situation. Third, sides are a $12 each and portions are barely enough for 2. The prime rib itself was delicious and isn't served with natural au jus, but more of a red wine au jus (we would have preferred natural). Annoyingly, they charge $2 for horseradish cream and other "sauces". We both ordered the Queen Cut ($48) which the waitress said was "about" 8 oz. Pretty sure it was closer to 6 oz or less because I finished the whole thing and could have eaten more. Highly recommend the Yorkshire pudding. It was the highlight of the meal. We also had the green beans with dijon and pecans which were supper salty. Desserts at $16 were overpriced given the portion sizes. The strawberry shortcake was okay. There was not enough sauce to soften the shortcake sufficiently. The Grasshopper pie was classic. My husband liked it, but it was a bit too sweet for my taste. Bottom line ... the $200+ bill for the 2 of us (w/ only 1 cocktail each) and nothing about the food that was all that compelling, we are unlikely to return. read more

I was excited to try this place as I am a fan of Roister and Next, but ultimately it was a big disappointment. First, you have to enter through Roister, which is buzzing and are led downstairs to the basement. The decor was ok, but there was not much ambiance and you never forgot that you were in fact....in the basement. We got the ceasar, crab cakes, prime rib and fries. The salad was very good, but the crab cakes (at $24) reminded me of the frozen variety and lacked any real lump crab meat. As for the prime rib, if you are only going to have one protein on the menu, it better be outstanding and this wasn't. I have had better at any country club Lawrys, and a dozen other places in the City. It didn't help that it was soaked in "au jus" which should have been offered on the side. Too many fatty, swiny parts in my "Kings Cut." We got two orders of prime rib for 4 people and the bill was close to $300 (with two drinks). It pains me that I could have gone to Gibson's, RPM, Rosebud prime etc for the same dollars and could have gotten a better piece of meat in a nicer atmosphere. I have been a Grant Achatz fan since his Trio days, and have dined at Alinea and Next several times. I was excited to experience his take on the supper club having spent time in the real deal in Wisconsin on several occasions. It is difficult, but not impossible, to get a reservation. And I decided not to read yelp reviews and make up my own mind about it. Had I read them, I would have known that since there were only two of us, we would be seated at the bar, so I was surprised when that happened. Awkwardly, it was not obvious where to hang our coats, and the staff acted as though we should have done it ourselves which was an off-putting beginning. Although my husband and I often sit at the bar in restaurants by choice when we know the bartender, we had no interaction with the staff behind the bar at all making it another awkward situation. Our waitress was friendly and available but not hovering. So essentially, the service was uneven. Nevertheless, I was (no pun intended) primarily there for the food. My companion does not drink, so the wine by the bottle was not going to do it for me, although there were a few half bottles. There are only three cocktails, but they made me a Manhattan anyway. Score points for this flexibility in a restaurant that is essentially a rigidly controlled format. We ordered the half Ceasar salad to split (it's quite large), we each had the queen prime rib, we had two sauces (bearnaise and horseradish cream) and two sides (creamed spinach and popovers). The salad had too much pepper and we did not finish it. The prime rib was fantastic--I had said it could not be too rare for me, and they did it perfectly. It comes with a wonderful au jus, but the unbelievable light bearnaise--yep, you read that correctly--was awesome and so was the horseradish. The creamed spinach was delicious but the popovers were overcooked and too greasy. We finished with the grasshopper pie which was also delicious. Overall, the food was good but not great. Ergo, my rating. Happy for the experience, but I don't think I will go back. read more

Sat at the chef's counter and every other one I have sat at the chefs interact - explain some things but this time they barely acknowledged you. Prime rib was solid - says served medium rare seemed a little more to the rare. 50/50 Mashed potatoes were some of the best I have ever had and the corn was extremely flavorful. I have two other turnoffs: 1.) chefs please don't keep touching your cell phones without washing your hands - most cell phones are horrible germ carriers. 2.) we asked about going to their sister restaurant Aviary for a fun after dinner cocktail (and I know it's usually reservation only but it was a Sunday night) and you would think they would call over to see but the response was "you can try." read more

If your food comes cold (and cold roast beef is not good) and your sides are tepid and not as advertised DO NOT think your experience will be different. Don't eat them. Send them back and leave. This restaurant is not as advertised and all you will get from the management is "Gee we're sorry." Not okay for the money and not a supper club in the true sense of the word. If you like prime rib, this place deserves not just 5, but 6 stars. However, I give it a 4 (I would really give 4.5 if I could) because of just a couple things: we were seated and didn't have a server come greet us for over 15 minutes (once she came she was wonderful) and the oysters weren't cooked nearly long enough--they were cold and the cheese wasn't melted which is a visible sign, so I don't know why the chef even served them like that. It's a small place and if there's two of you, you sit at the bar...we actually enjoy all that and we got to see the meat cut/served all night. Mashed potatoes and beans were our sides, delicious. If you can imagine the anticipation I experienced prior to being escorted down the steps to what I thought would be a wonderful evening filled with great drinks and rare steak, it was high to say the least. You enter through Roister's - down steps and basically through the lobby serving the restrooms accommodating Roister's and St. Clair's. Unfortunately, several of us picked up a slight sewage smell while entering SC's, not the setting of the table you may have expected. After being seated (two tables of four next to each other) we met our server James. James was very good. I ordered my first drink, Jack Daniels, which they didn't serve. Help me here, I'm to believe/imagine I'm in a Wisconsin supper and no JD? I audibled to a Manhattan with cherry juice and had a couple - very good. Of course we all had prime rib, Caesars Salad, mashed potatoes, mushrooms with marinated onions (like the ones used in a Gibson) creamed spinach and deserts. The deserts were a chocolate tort and grasshopper pie. One bottle of Pinot Noir, a cocktail each (8). With gratuity it totaled around a grand for seven people. The other thing that I didn't appreciate was the speed with which it was presented. Obviously they wanted to turn the tables and at those prices, who wouldn't? My husband and I came to St. Clair to celebrate our birthdays, Nov. 20, 2019. We made reservations (recommended) and seated at the bar in a cozy atmosphere for conversation with each other and those sitting next to us. It is also great for seeing the various chefs at work. We ordered the queen and king rib eye with a red wine sauce and 50/50 mashed potatoes as a side. The rib eyes were cooked perfectly, nicely marbled and those 50/50 mashed potatoes. Oh my. I asked for the secret to them with the chef. He told me with a smile. I'll just say they are decadent. The mixed drinks are limited, but do have a vast list of wine. My husband had an old fashioned (which he said was perfect) and I ordered a bottle of wine. They don't serve by the glass, but you can take home whatever is left. We ended the evening with a wonderful chocolate cherry torte. Our server was friendly and attentive. There was always water in our glass and wine poured by either himself or the chef who was wonderful. I would definitely come back to this welcoming atmosphere and a really great meal that met all our expectations. read more

Once we were finally seated and started to eat, the waiter came over and took the plates off the table saying "you aren't using them and we need them for another table". Cute concept, small basement area done up to look straight out of your grandparents house with wood parquet flooring , low ceiling and cartoons on the wall. Super quick service, probably due to very limited menu, but felt very rushed (not so cool when paying big bucks). So so offerings were crab cakes, asparagus, green beans. Stand outs were Yorkshire pudding, the prime rib, mashed potatoes and fries. Really needs work was horseradish cream (no bite no tang no horseradish?) and the strawberry biscuit dessert (rock hard). Went last night to celebrate my husband's birthday with 2 other couples. I was really excited to try this restaurant, as we are all lovers of prime rib. We did not order appetizers,we wanted to save our appetites for the main course and sides. All I can say is, the whole experience left me feeling disappointed. First, the music selection was fine, but it was loud enough to make the conversation with the folks at the other end of the rectangular table repeatedly shout "what???" at us. The server explained the menu, took the drink order, and returned almost immediately after drinks arrived to take our dinner orders. 6 small dinner rolls arrived, one for each of us and they were like store bought Parker rolls, nothing great. Then the meals arrived five minutes after that. I was shocked at how quickly everything was served, as if they couldn't get you out of there fast enough. I expected dining, not a deli counter. The sides...another story. I am glad that we did not order the spinach, as I have now seen on other reviews that is was not great. We the 50-50 mashed potatoes, which were good, but the serving was insulting for $12 dollars. The brussel sprouts, also good, and also an absurdly small serving. Last we ordered the Yorkshire pudding, nothing to get excited about. We ordered a second mashed potatoes as one was not enough and our waitress said "I'll get that right away and then she went off to chat with a table that was getting ready to order. A busser came by and we asked if he could get the potatoes as we would have been almost finished eating if we waited much longer. The busser was great, got the potatoes, kept filling the water glasses, etc, but the waitress never came back. The busser brought the dessert menus, and described the choices. After we finished eating, which took less than 45 mins. from the time we were seated, they starting clearing the table, no big deal, but even pulling away the water glasses placemats....as if to say, "time for you to leave!" The bill came with the 20% gratuity added in, and that is not totally unusual, but considering the waitress' lack of interest and the insane rapidity of the service, was, in my opinion, not deserved. So, my advise is, if you want a supper club dinner, drive to Wisconsin, where they know the genre and they do it right. read more

4 of us dined at St. Clair Supper Club, 5pm resi, Sat, Aug 17. It was fantastic. Brian was an amazing host. It was like we were in his house just chatting away like old friends. Jennifer was one off the best servers in memory; either loves what she does or is a superb actor. The food was delicious. My friend said it was the best prime rib in his life. My wife is typically disappointed because no prime rib can live up to her Christmas eve dinner. She said this beat it. The Old Fashioned (St. Clair version) was a perfect balance. The chef stopped by to let us know we were the first to try the king crab special and asked our opinion. All four of us loved it. We only wish they had cut the shell the entire length. We had the fish and chips special for an appetizer. Mashed potatoes; yes, just do it. We finished with the grasshopper pie. What a great night. Our advice before you go, read the menu on line. It lets you know what this establishment is and is not, and includes prices; no surprises. For us, it exceeded expectations! I wanted to come on and write a review to help boost this place's rating!! We went last night for dinner, and I honestly was not that excited because of all the negative reviews I read regarding the bad service and not so great food. Maybe the restaurant just needed time to get things going or something because it was great!!! We sat at the bar (where most people are seated), and our waiter was so nice; we were not rushed in and out at all. Since I heard the apps weren't the best, we got the crab leg special (that was offered on Sat night dinner menu's special) for our app, and we are so happy we did that. We both got the queen prime rib, which was definitely big enough -- I couldn't finish it, and I can eat ALOT! That was really good too. For sides, we got the 50-50 mash and the creamed corn which both were great. The dessert (it's green and like a pie or something) was amazing. The only thing that I would say is maybe the chefs can interact a little bit more with the diners since we were sitting right where the chefs were cooking. The chefs in front of us were texting on their phones in between their cooking which I thought was a little odd- they could have interacted with us instead. If you have never been to a Wisconsin supper club you may like St Clair Supper Club a tiny space in the basement of Roister. Going up to the hostess stand before we could say anything she simply said, "Do you have a reservation?" Yes good evening we do. The dining room itself is small with a large serving bar and a few tables with a view of the bus station and the door of the dish room. The first thing you notice is the music, Jimi Hendrix playing All Along the Watchtower at a volume that would have made my high school self very happy but unfortunately I could not hear our server. I asked if the music could be turned down and got an eye roll from our server with a flat I will see what I can do. The table next to us was in mid meal and solved the problem of the loud music by simply screaming at each other. Drinks for our table of four took about ten minutes to get to the table and during that time we quickly googled any place else we could go to for dinner. The Who is now blasting away and the table next to us is screaming a very long joke. The house policy on reservations is that they hold 25.00 per person at the time you make a reservation so we had 100.00 in our account. When our server came back with our drinks we asked to settle the bill she said is there anything I can do? We did not go into any details and just said we are not feeling the experience. Our server went to the manager and came back to let us know our four drinks didn't exceed the 100 dollar deposit. At that point we just assumed they would keep the hundred dollars regardless.
