Not a bad place for watching sports. There are TVs literally all over the bar. Don't expect to have a conversation here because everyone including yourself will simultaneously be watching football, american football, basketball, you name it. My brother and I came here for St. Patrick's Day because it's one of two Irish pubs in Mountain View and the only one that serves food. I was pretty disappointed. Food prices were jacked up - got fish & chips that's usually $14, was $19 today. I don't mean to be tacky but the marked up food was on top of a $10 cover per person (which I'm still not sure what that covered since there was no live music). Pretty greedy and exploitive, St. Stephen's Green. Overall meh food and overpriced. Waitress was nice. $10 Guinness (you've gotta be kidding me) was cold. We won't be back. read more

I came here at 4pm on a weekday and unbeknownst to me, Happy Hour began at 5pm. To me, this made no sense. In order for me to take advantage of reduced pricing for food and drinks, I had to wait an hour? Most of the bars that I've been to, their happy hour starts at least a 4pm and goes until 6pm. But St Stephen's Green starts at 5pm and goes until 6:30? I next wanted to try to see what food they had for Happy Hour. I grabbed a menu and I looked up and down the menu to find a clue on what was discounted. Here's what I find: "Selected Menu Items up to 50% off." Really?? That is really super clear and precise... They also didn't have a large specialty mixed drink menu and a variety of lesser known European beers on draft and in bottles but a very decent food menu that included fish and chips and a variety of burgers. With the opening of the Stein's Beer Garden down the street, I don't think St Stephen's offers anything that will bring me to their bar. read more

Came here for happy hour with coworkers and had a blast. Service was friendly, there's a great variety of beers and tasty fried appetizers. An unexpected delighter: We had way too many people for our table. We literally squeezed as many chairs around our 5 combined tables and had a cozy merry time. I was surprised we were able to make such a ruckus getting our party all seated w/o getting even a dirty look from the other customers near us. My favorite beer was a dark beer with a name that included the word "oatmeal." I can't remember the whole name, but just ask for a dark beer that has oatmeal in the title, and you'll be set. It also looked like they have a comedy night, karaoke night and live music. I look forward to coming back here, trying more beers and having some good fun. read more

The pub was packed here on a Wednesday during happy hour! It was so packed and so understaffed that it took us 25 min to get the garden burger we ordered and another 15 on top of that for me to get a glass of water (that's after I showed up. My friends were there an hour before me and they ordered the burger before I came). Sure we had a great time, but that was more because of the company than the food. The garden burger was tasty, but a little on the dry side. They charge you extra to cut it in half (my friend and I wanted to share). That's so dumb! Wish they served sliders. read more

We came here last night after dinner across the street and it was still early (around 7:30pm). Saw the sign to seat ourselves so we walked in to the back and sat at one of the middle tables in front of the huge tv that was showing the NBA playoffs. The Warriors happened to be playing last night so there were a bunch of warriors fans sitting around us. Anyways, we sit down and the waitress says she will be with us in a second but its more like 5-10 minutes. She doesn't bring us menus or anything, just asks if what we want. Good thing we weren't there for dinner. We ordered our drinks and she asks if we want menus, so we tell her no. A few minutes go by, and our drinks finally come out after another 10 minutes. By the way, i'm not sure if it was just the Warriors fans that were there or if Warriors fans are like this in general but DAMN they were annoying... this may be unfair cuz it was primarily one guy that was there but he was super annoying. But i digress... The service was slow here, the waitress was not friendly. This is why I give this place only 2 stars. Friends and I stopped here around 10 for some drinks. I saw ST STEPHEN'S turned into SANTO ESTEBAN in a matter of minutes. What we liked: -good crowd and pretty packed, yet managed to get a table -decent selection on tap, had the oktoberfest! -had TVs in the back to catch MMA -free pkg lot abt 1/2 blocks off of Dana/Castro in the evening. Why no fifth star: -innocently enough, -placed turned into dance nite within minutes, very noisy and couldn't really talk much -Plenty of eye candy for you single guys out there, but might be tough to see with the smoke machines and colored strobe lights blinding the patrons. -Latin music playing in an Irish pub, the dance floor was literally next to us, it's like they imported PURE for one nite! Would likely come back during the week and for happy hour to try their food or fish&chips. Turns into a meat-mkt in a hurry, so I'd probably hit a lounge or coffeehouse next time. read more

St. Stephen's Green makes for a pretty decent sports bar. There are tv's and projectors at practically every corner, so you don't have to worry about getting a 'bad view'- and the drinks are CHEAP. A pint of Stella set me back $3.50, and for a Friday night, I don't think that's terrible at all. My problem is with the service. The ladies at the bar are cool, and they are super efficient at what they do- but once you sit down, that's another beast entirely. We finished work and went here to catch a Sharks game- grabbed a couple of tables- and was met with the MEANEST woman with the dourest face. She never cracked a smile, spoke only in a brusque manner, and she never really checked up on us after our order. And the food took FOREVER. I mean, how does it take twenty minutes for a plate of FRIES to get served out- I will never understand. To the lady waitress, a smile will net you a ton more tips than that sour service you've been doling out. Protip: come here for the drinks, not the food. read more

I am a frequent customer here. I always get Guinness since they have it on tap. I don't know what happened, but I came here for HH on a Wednesday a few weeks ago and I was charged for the full price (I thought it was only $2.75 like the last time I was here!). My friend, on the other hand, got the HH discount for her Strongbow cider. We were served by the same bartender, who I've never seen before. He seemed new.. I figured maybe HH was over, but that wasn't the case because my friend ordered after me. My card got swiped and everything, so I decided to let it go and not make a fuss about it. Next time, though... I'm making sure I'm paying the right amount! I've never had this problem before. ANYWAY, the music has improved a lot (they used to play a bunch of mariachi and international music, haha), and I appreciate that they do not really charge covers anymore. This place was PACKED, more so than Molly's and all the other nightclubs on Castro. I felt like I was at the Patio in Palo Alto or something, where I could barely move through the crowd. I always make a stop here when I am hanging out in downtown MV. Great beer and atmosphere. Still have yet to try their food though. read more

Nice pub. Good beer, good food, reasonable decor. About the only negative I'd have would be that it was a little noisy. Hardly surprising though. We managed to find a spot which wasn't so crowded or noisy and had no trouble hearing ourselves. We had the bangers and mash. One portion fed two of us a reasonable portion. The bangers were tasty with just the right level of spicing. The gravy didn't overpower the rest of the dish. This is a good place for a TGIF beer or beer and dinner. read more

I'm being a bit lenient by awarding this place 5 stars, because I have had better. That, however, was in the old country. Here in the great U.S. of A., we have to settle for what we can get. So by American standards, this is a fabulous Irish pub. Even my hella Irish dad comes here on occasion. If you're more into the pub feel than the nightlife/sportsbar feel, come around lunch time. The place is pretty empty and you can enjoy whatever is on TV and a beer with some peace and quiet. I stopped in for lunch with my mom because she claimed this place had "the greatest veggie burger." So, I ordered the garden burger which consisted of a lovely veggie patty, sauteed mushrooms, sauteed peppers and onions with swiss cheese. Of course it was served with a glorious heap of french fries (or chips as we call them) that could rival those from back home. This review is for the night club hours. Went here after going to Molly MaGees at around 11:45pm. A place with no cover and no dress code is always a plus for me. Dressing up is cool, but I like to dress down, wanna feel comfortable at the club. The place was pretty dark, could barely make out any faces. Good music though, the dance floor is weird...I feel like I'm dancing in a giant wooden box. My two friends and I were the only people dancing...Seemed more like a kick back, chill spot, most people were sitting at tables, some standing around talking. I probably wouldn't go back because I like places that are more lively. read more

3/4 people got very sick (missed work the next day due to frequent trips to the bathroom if you catch my drift) from eating here on our first time, and after management 'investigated' (and dismissed) the order, I was placed on Stephen's Green's email blast campaign = poor marketing strategy. My boyfriend, room mate, and friend got food poisoning after sharing three different items from Stephen's Green on a Tuesday evening. The manager explained that no one else that week had complained and advised my cohorts to visit a doctor. Our waitress was totally slammed and couldn't come by often, but was very polite. I've been here a couple times now for Happy Hour and have to say, it's worth the drive to Mountain View. Not only are the hours ideal (5-6:30pm) but most of their menu is 40-50% off with $2-3.50 draft beers. While parking in downtown Mountain View isn't always easy, finding a seat for a small group of friends inside St. Stephen's Green is. First impressions of St. Stephen's -- all good so far. They have a fairly good selection of draft beers, and they offer a variety of imports from around the world (something you wouldn't expect from an American Irish pub). I'm looking forward to trying some of their menu items. My first time around, I tried the shepherd's pie. The beef was tender and comforting when combined with the potatoes. The included veggies make for a worthy side. Overall, it's the right portion and, for $7.99 during happy hour, is darn well worth it. Their happy hour prices and selections (drink and grub) are excellent, too. Overall, this is a welcoming establishment with what I consider a customer-first approach. Came here with friends on a Friday night. Too bad we got there about 6:40pm and missed their happy hour (I heard they have a decent happy hour) Basically they are only getting 2 stars based on service. After been greeted by our waiter.....we barely saw him. We were one of 3 or 4 groups on the patio....but it felt like our waiter must have been running the WHOLE restaurant. SLOW to take our order.....SLOW to get our food (almost 1 hour from the time we sat to the time the food arrived) and we had to go and hunt them down to pay our bill. Love this bar. I have been coming here for years for Sports, Trivia, and have always enjoyed the food. Trivia night is an DTMV institution, the best in the area. Recently, I am really enjoying the takeout menu, which the staff/management change daily. Highlights for me are the Fish & Chips, Fried Chicken Sandwich, and Salmon Pasta. These guys added their own tip. Once the amount was 24 bucks, I made it 30.00, and the guy took 36.00 bucks from me. I thought perhaps my writing was bad, and they mistook it. The next time I was at the bar, I did not add a tip as he took forever to even pay attention to any customer. They added a 17% tip on their own. The amount was 46.52 and they made it 54.52. A little advice to the bar tenders would be to understand that people don't get so drunk that they forget everything. If you would like a tip, add a mandatory tip to the bill, or serve a bit better .. people will tip on their own. Edit : I disputed the transaction, and they refunded the amount later though. But, it was very irresponsible to do this mistake twice. Also, I see there are couple of other people who have suffered this. read more

A lot of positives and negatives for this place. This is actually a 3 star place for me but their apple pie is my most favorite apple pie EVER which is why this gets pushed up to 4 star. Positives: - Well, I already mentioned the apple pie. It's the best. The end. - A lot of TVs - Full bar - Lots of different beer on draft to choose from - Always playing sports - Ample seating Negatives: - Food is SUPER over priced. And it's good but still...really expensive for my taste - They don't play anything with volume. Let me get to the point, because there is one main reason I go here regularly: the chicken curry. It's not spicy at all, in fact it's a little sweet and the while the curry is mild, it's extremely flavorful. The chicken is well cooked and I believe there are small cooked onions in the curry, so soft you might not even be sure what they are. It's okay, just eat it. They also have [had? not sure if it's still there] an excellent Chicken Cordon Bleu, the right amount of breading and melty cheese and their side veggies are decent if average. The steak fries are consistently good, so much so that I always get half rice, half fries with the curry. Be forewarned, this place is incredibly noisy and often crowded since they have several TVs showing whatever sporting events are on, including obscure foreign soccer matches. It's also very unpredictable, as I've experienced everything from random military activists approaching me to oddly inappropriate (and typically completely ignored) DJs to honest-to-goodness physical fights. Service is adquate and rarely outstanding, but really, it's all about the curry. read more

Last night I went with my girlfriends and had some security guard scream at the top of his lungs at one of my friends. First of all there was no one at the entrance so my girl just went in when suddenly this security guard yells at her to stop and then nearly slams the door on her when she walks back. I don't know what his deal was but because of that Stephens is no longer a place I want to go to. I ended walking next door to mollies. I haven't tried the food here, but I have had some of their drinks. They clearly are a pub, and do not even try to offer a large selection of wines or any inspired cocktails. My bf really likes some of their beer (good selection), and believes their prices are decent. We generally only come on Wednesdays for Trivia Night, which we also enjoy a lot, much more than some of the others in the South Bay. I'll say that the Trivia host isn't really entertaining, but the questions are actually manageable. The one gripe I have with this place is that the waitresses have always been a little off putting. The first time we came here our waitress didn't really even speak to us, just took our order and walked away. All the other times, our waitresses have been similarly weird. Throughout my 5-year employment tenure in downtown Mountain View, I have gone here from time to time to enjoy a drink or two...or three or more. More recently though, it seems I've visited this place almost every week...not sure who or what to give credit to for that...I'm not an alcoholic, dammit. :) What keeps me coming back is, quite frankly, the fact that every other drinking establishment in downtown Mountain View sucks! St. Stephen's Green wins by default. Agreed? Agreed! Huzzah! Let's drink to that! Irish Car Bombs for everyone! They have a good selection of draft beers that suits everyone's palates. Among my favorites are Stella, Fat Tire, and Blue Moon. If they had Hoegaarden on tap, I'd be coming here every single day. That's "real talk" for you. If you work at or manage St. Stephen's Green and are reading this review, please add Hoegaarden on tap. You'll have a customer (that would be me) for life! I'm relatively young too, so I have about 20 years or so until my liver taps out. Just sayin'. The Shepherds Pie here is definitely worth trying. It's probably one of the best I've ever eaten. But who am I to tell you that and it's not like I'm a "Shepherds Pie Connoisseur" or anything. Just take my word for it though. A large group of us came here Thursday afternoon around 3 or 4 to watch a game. I guess this is a slow time because there were only about 3 or 4 other tables throughout the entire restaurant. We arrived late and I was parched so I flagged down the waitress to order a beer & water of course. She told me to wait a minute since she was bringing out our tables food. I was a bit to eager so I headed to the bar to get my own drink.....little did I know our server was the food runner and bartender TOO! I sat back down and waited for her to take my order. She was very nice and let me and my BF split our check from the rest of the table. We ordered a SC hefenweisen, Stella and a sirloin burger with blue cheese. We also shared a few potatoes wedges, fries and wings which were all delicious. After we paid we went out front on the large outdoor patio. It was beautiful out and I heard that they have NO CORKAGE! I will have to come back and try this place out for dinner. Looks like a better dinner spot. My recommendation: Go for dinner. Service isn't much during the day. I couldn't afford a trip to Ireland, so I decided to come here instead. I was meeting a date, and made sure I was decked out in all green, green heels, bright neon colored tights, a glittery dark green mini dress and the only green hat I own, it was an A's hat, and I am a Giants fan so it was painful to wear, but I sucked it up in the name of the Irish! What a major dissapointment! No leprechauns, lucky charms or shamrocks. No one else was even in proper Irish attire! It was just me, and I sure looked like an idiot. No wonder my date never called me back : / Still, however un-Irish, I found this hole in the wall pub to be quite homey and inviting. It was dark just the way I like it, so I could easily hide amidst the crowd and people watch as if I was invisible. There is a large bar area with a good selection of beers, perfect way to fuel my alcholism. And there is plenty of seating outside of the bar area, lots of tables and chairs to stumble into after those first few drinks. The music was pretty good as well, and the crowd was decent. I might be too embarrased to show my face here ever again, but you should definately check it out! And don't bring a date, they'll be plenty of just slightly above mediocre-looking guys to check out (and that's pretty decent for Mountain View). Now ... me want some lucky charms! read more

They have happy hours from 5:00-630PM from Monday-Fridays and they have a bunch of draft beers that range from $2-$3.50 and 40-50% off "many" menu items. $2 for Blue Moon is quite the deal, so plus stars for that. And there is a wide selection of beers for their happy hour special (but they don't have exact happy hour prices listed, you just have to ask). Try to get there early if you can because it will be packed by 6PM. The service is mediocre and the waitresses seem to pay more attention to the larger groups. But don't ever order the happy hour salads, it's pretty gross and looks super unappealing; everything else I'd say is pretty good, especially the burgers. If you're ever in Castro and in time for happy hour, hit this place up if you cannot find any other. read more

Came on trivia night and it was pretty entertaining. Ordered food and drinks. Food was mediocre. Drinks.... can't really mess that up. The atmosphere was pretty friendly and the staff seemed overrun by the crowded room. Our table ordered, shepard's pie (was ok), burgers (medium rare came out well done), fish and chips (was ok). The best bartender and new chef!!! I had the best experience at a pub since I've been at my home in Ireland. First off the pub service is top notch. Your man from Mullingar runs a great bar and they serve fresh, delicious pints of Guinness. I asked what he would order and he suggested the pork chop. Ireland serves brilliant pork dishes, top notch. The new chef José blew me away. It was a thick cut bone in chop. All of us that have tried to cook a chop like this know it's not easy. José and his team cooked it to perfection. The flavors were exceptionally balanced between succulent, savory, salty, crunchy, soft and sweet. I dare you to ask for what José recommends. The standard fare looks properly prepares. However, this chef and bar man create a brilliant laid back and delicious culinary adventure. read more

Castro Street is an interesting, lively, and eclectic little street, but for some reason, weird things happen to me there, which puts me off from coming down here more often. For example, last night, a groupof crazy Bible-thumpers condemned my two friends and me for being wicked and told me I was dressed like a harlot. (Incidentally, I was wearing a blouse I wore to my boyfriend's parents' house for Easter and long pants). Among other Castro Street weirdness that I have experienced was happy hour last night at St. Stephen's Green. The service was just so bad it was almost comical. First, two waitresses seemed totally thrown by our requests for glasses of water with our order. Then my friend ordered a Cobb salad, which appeared sans dressing. She called the waitress over to ask if the salad comes with dressing. The waitress answered, "Yes." My friend asked, "Oh, is it pre-dressed?" The waitress replied, "No," paused for about a minute and then said, "Oh, do you want dressing or something?" The gist was, "Yes, this salad comes with dressing, but you're just not getting any." When the honey-mustard dressing did arrive, it looked like a big blob of lemon curd. (My friend had a less G-rated description for it. And I'm supposed to be the harlot?) Then when she asked for more water, the waitress spilled water all around her glass as she poured it. She apologized, but didn't bother to wipe it up, leaving my friend to search for napkins to mop up the pool of water. Finally, the bouncers pulled out the giant welcome mat for the post-happy hour crowd, but unfortunately, they decided it would be a good idea to vigorously shake it of dust and dirt--inside, next to our table, so that we, our food, and drinks got sprayed with nice bits of door mat filth. Nice. Maybe it's my Castro Street bad luck that brought out the worst service, but St. Stephen's Green just isn't working for me. read more
