The stars are for the beer selection, only. Went in last night with my sons @ 8pm and as is typical in these bar/restaurants the bartender waited on us at a high-top near the bar. The middle aged severe looking woman who waited on us needs to find another way of making her living. She was brusque, inattentive and churlish. It was clear that we were annoying her by our presence and that we were taking time away from her attending to the bar. A smile some small talk etc would have gone a long way towards making us feel welcome. My 20 year old was made to feel so uncomfortable that he wanted to exit even before finishing our meal, and he never leaves a table with food on it, never. Ahh the food. Ordered the tavern nachos, 17 bucks and another 3 for the chili to be added on. When it arrived there was a pile of refried beans that was larger than my fist I have large fist) dead smack in the middle of the nachos. It was impossible to touch any of the chips without getting a tablespoon of refried bean on it which was a turnoff for the 13 year old. There was at most three tablespoons of chili on the plate, more than a buck a tablespoon is pricey, about half that much fresh tomatoes and two tablespoons of salsa in a miniature container on the side. Plenty of pit less olives though. So essentially I got a chesse with refried beans and olive nacho for 20 bucks. Hardly worth it. The special for the evening was 1/2 priced pizza, I ordered one out of curiosity and so that the 13 year old would have lunch today. The tomatoes and cheese looked to be placed on a pita that was undercooked. It was so yucky looking that the 13 year old wouldn't touch it, last night or for lunch today. Who ever heard of a 13 year old turning down a slice of pie? 1/2 price is no bargain if nobody will eat it. The 20 year old ordered the ribs, wings, hamburger with a side combination for $20. Our bartender/waitress did not provide him with any condiments for the burger and was offended when we asked for more napkins. Wings were tasty but the others were overcooked and/or stale. His finishing it was no sign of the quality of the food. Anyway, below mediocre food, decent beers and a sourpuss waitress is the short version. Worst. Wings. Ever!!! Was here several years ago and remembered they had pretty good wings. My office relocated to Claymont and decided to order out for lunch. Even spoke highly of this place to my coworkers. Ordered 5 10 piece wings at $15.50 each. Kind of high but good food is worth it. Wings were absolutely terrible for everyone. Super tiny, either overcooked or old. Like eating chicken jerky. Why the cook would even package this up and serve it is ridiculous. A coworker called to complain and was told I would be receiving a call. Don't think that would be happening. Spent a total of $88 at this place. What a waste. My mind is blown that Stanley's only has a three star review!! This place was exceptional for a local sports pub. The overall atmosphere was great - Autographs on the walls, jerseys everywhere and Eagles memorabilia as far as the eye can see. The staff was extremely friendly and patient while we took our time ordering our meals. Top it all off the food was superb. My wife and I got the ribs with two different sauces on them! My mother in law got the pork with the Carolina sauce which was amazing. I can't speak any higher of this place and I highly recommend checking it out if you are nearby. read more

We have been to Stanley's several times for brunch, lunch and dinner. I do enjoy there food but I feel they need a little more of a selection. I don't know why but I have such a hard time choosing something because nothing on the menu is like "I have to get that". Hubby enjoys going here more then I do. We have tried the Buffalo Beer Cheese and the Tater Tots with Brie and bacon sauce both really good. I will definitely get the Tater Tots again. We weren't crazy about the burgers nothing special about them. The chili with corn bread is good especially the corn bread. The Salmon BLT was to fishy. The open face surf & turf is delicious but a little pricey for the portion. Their Mac & cheese is good. Hubby always gets the fish and chips or the meatloaf and he enjoys them both. I love soup. I could eat it for every meal. The one thing I don't like about Stanley's is almost every time I go there I want the soup they have on the salad bar but you can't get it unless you get the salad bar. I like Stanley's can't say they are my first choice when we go out to eat. The food is good can honestly say we haven't had a bad meal there and the staff is friendly and attentive. Really a great time. We have been twice, and both times have been very impressed. Food is great pub grub, prices are good, and my wife loves the salad bar. Service has always been awesome. Never had a complaint in that department, even when they are packed. My only issue would be that both times we have been there I have carefully gone over the beer list, eventually settled on what I wanted...and then they didnt have it. Either the keg had just been tapped or they were out of the bottle...both times, it happened more then once. Maybe I just have great taste. Regardless, they were always able to make alternate suggestions and I have certainly never felt like I had to settle. This is my first time eating here. My Fiance told me it was better than her last visit since the menu changed. The food was good, brought quickly and by good staff. This place has an ENORMOUS menu and lots of good craft beers on tap, which is a relatively recent development. Margarita was also delish. But they had Southern Tier Pumking still when a lot of places didn't! My fav. October beer! I had the Kobe burger, and it was delicious. I'm actually craving it right now. They give you chips w/ it, which kind of annoys me lol. I feel like fries should be an option with a big juicy burger, and they are an option for extra $$, and not just a buck either. We split the fried cheesecake for dessert. HEAVENLY. One of the best desserts I've ever had. SO delicious. Service was great -- seated promptly (place is pretty big), and waitress was friendly. The first time we went, I had the mac & cheese & we got nachos and onion strings for apps. Mac & chz was delish, nachos were behemoth and wonderful. Portions are seriously, huge. I've eaten at Stanley's a few times; it's a favorite of my co-workers, and convenient to go to for lunch or after-work drinks. Things I've tried and would recommend: - The mussels (Rosa style, so tasty) - The portabella fries (thick, lightly breaded strips of mushroom served with zesty horseradish sauce) - The pizzas (chicken and brie was good, the lejon is better) - Hushpuppies (crabcake was good too, but MAN, those hushpuppies!) - Chocolate covered banana mixed drink (blended and huge) The menu is extensive, and it looks like they do some seasonal stuff at the front. They have both food and drink specials pretty much every day. Wednesday is half-priced burger and wine bottle night. Thursday is the mussels special. This is also the least obnoxious sports bar I've ever visited. They keep all the aggressive, beer-spilling loudmouths in a seperate area of the establishment, which is nice for non-sports fans like me. The servers are usually very friendly, although one (Gianni? Johnny?) can err on the side of being over-familiar. Other than a couple of kooky upcharges (crabcake came with tartar or cocktail, boyfriend wanted both and was charged an extra dollar AND friend ordered mussels and asked for one extra piece of bread to sop up the broth, got charged $3 and was given three pieces instead of the once she asked for), I would say this place is good food at a decent price. The cumulative rating as of today says 3.5 stars, and that's would I would give too, if able. But there was this one time that a party of 13 of us descended upon Stanley's for lunch and our waitress never wrote anything down, but remembered every last order down the substitutions and particulars! I made an order through DoorDash and had high expectations of their food as Stanley's Tavern previously impressed me.... Not today ! I ordered the plank salmon, parm. green beans and macaroni and cheese. The salmon was not seasoned at all, I barely tasted the essence of the plank. And the macaroni was horrible. The topping was simply a mound of crushed ritz crackers (some of it was discarded into the garbage), not toasted or anything. This was an experience that will never be forgotten as I will N E V E R purchase anything else from this establishment again. Wow!!! I have been wanting a crispy chicken sandwich for a while now but haven't found the right place. Haven't ordered from Stanley's yet but I was always intrigued to try them. I love that the ordering online process was super easy and they offer delivery through DoorDash if you don't want to pick up during covid. This sandwich was amazingggggg crispy, juicy, perfect. Stanley's is a dive. That isn't an insult or a compliment but the feel you get going there. I happen to love dives so I love the place. The food is good but not generally mind blowing other than the tots with the bacon Brie dipping sauce. Amazing. The beer selection is good and they're one of the places that goes the extra mile to rim your beer glass with appropriate salt/sugar/cinnamon for some of the more seasonal drinks. Like most dives, being a regular will likely get you better service but I've only been twice and I've yet to feel left out. I will say I felt more welcomed in the bar section over the restaurant section though. If you don't mind kitschy decor and SLIGHTLY overpriced food it's a great place to hang out with a couple of friends. read more

Let me start by saying, on this venue I give both positive and negative reviews. If you're good, I'll say it because you deserve it. If you're bad, you've earned it. I couldn't have been more disappointed with my experience here at Stanley's. My parents and I arrived at 1pm on a weekday, after the lunch rush. We were seated immediately and waited on promptly. Everything went downhill from there. Despite the fact that practically no one was here, it took exceptionally long you get the food. When it did arrive, the crab cake was cold and my Dad's sandwich didn't come with the requested onion. My roast beef was mediocre. The French onion was good. Once the crab cake arrived at the proper temp and the onion was added to the sandwich, my parents enjoyed both. For a place that has been a mainstay in the area for so long, I was not impressed. This was always a 'go to' place but has gone down in quality and service. The past 2 visits were disappointing with service as slow as molasses! Lunch special for $9 consisted of a SMALL piece of meatloaf that looked like it was the end of the batch. All broken and in pieces as though it had been cut into prior to me getting it. This with a side of beans for $9 was way overpriced! Hubby got the fried haddock lunch special for $9 which was very good. However, the shoestring onions were ice cold! Been eating here for years just jumped on yelp. They have a san francisco seafood stew that is like heavan in a bowl the size of a mountain. There are specials almost every day of the week. Don't even get me started on the ribs. I make a mean rib, but if you want some great ribs right away instead of waiting for 4 hours, this is the place. Everyone knows everyone there, and you can't find a bad seat to watch any game. No place is perfect but if you stick to what's best, seafood, ribs, kobe burger wings and other apps, you will never have a bad meal. If the server says it's good, then it is. Quality has dropped over the last few years. I used to go for the ribs which aren't too bad, except they don't cook them with any sauce and attempt to slather (I call it more of a plop) some of whichever flavor you order. Last time there I order the fish and chips without high expectations, and my wife ordered the southern fried chicken. Drinks were fine and service was slow but not too unpleasant until I ran into a problem with my fish. Our orders arrived and look pretty good, as I broke open my fish it was cold and totally uncooked in the middle. 5 minutes to flag our waitress (who had a waiter in training following her) and I showed her the fish. She apologized and took back my platter, fries and all. I told my wife to go ahead and eat since her's was hot (and greasy I might add). Fast forward another 10 minutes, I've been ask if we'd like another drink (Yes, please) and was told my food would be out soon. 6 minutes more and our drinks arrive and I ask about my food, the waitress apologizes again and says she will go check. In the meantime my wife is 75% done her meal and I'm still waiting. 3 minutes later the waiter in training walks up with my dinner and I now have a pipping hot, nice looking meal I should have had 20 minutes earlier. 3 minutes later the waitress stops by and asks if this serving is OK, I confirm it is and thank her for asking. It's now my wife's turn to watch me eat. I hurry only because we have now been at the table for close to an hour. The waitress comes back and asks if we'd like any dessert (i'm still eating) and we decline and ask for the check. The check came back just as I was done and, to my surprise, we were charged full price for everything we had. I called the waitress back and ask if we could at least be comped on a round or drinks or a dessert, she said she thought we didn't want dessert. I said perhaps if if were free I'd consider it. I mean we were here and extra half hour + because I was server undercooked fish. She asked if I'd like to talk to the manager, I said yes because I'd like to explain that I think this was an unacceptable business practice. 5 minutes later I flag our waitress hand her my credit card and tell her to cash us out and asked about the manager. She told me that she had talked to her and she should be there shortly. I made sure when the waitress came back (before the manager) that she understood that I was tipping them only because the still served us ok but I wrote on the receipt that I was very unhappy with the meal itself and wrote my phone number. No sign of the manager so we get up to leave. As we head around front to exit the manager catches up and ask if everything was alright? I said "No, not even close., and if you had showed up 10 minutes earlier you would know that." She was still apologizing about being held up with a problem as I was walking out the door. It's been a good 4 months now and I will not be back there for for quite a while since I never ever got a phone call from the ownership. Not that I really expected one. read more

Been coming to Stanley's for years. The newspaper made a big deal of their recent remodeling. I don't see what all the hype is about. Stopped in recently to check out the remodeling and have a late lunch. The nachos were sub-par at best. Very skimpy on the toppings and not only that, the toppings were all plopped on the top of the chips and not spread around. There was a dearth of cheese or other toppings. Our other entree's were just OK but nothing to jump thru hoops over. Not sure what happened but the old Stanley's was better. We'll try here again but not rush back. We live nearby and go to Stanley's rather frequently so we've missed it over the last several weeks as it was closed for renovations. It just reopened today and we went for dinner. The new renovations are AWESOME! The place looks great! Everything looks nice and clean. New hardwood floors replaced the dingy old carpet. The walls are painted a nice light color. All of the tables and chairs are brand new. The booths look brand new in a beautiful two tone brown. New and more televisions which will be great for watching sporting events. Just left Stanley's for lunch. Don't go there much but today was rib special day and I was in the mood. Ordered the $19 combo meal with half rack and crab cake and sweet potato fries. When asked what sauce I wanted for crab cake I said both. When the meal came the half rack of ribs looked like a miniature 1/4 rack. I didn't say anything since it was a special although other times I ordered them they were twice as big. When the bill came I saw they charged me $22 plus $1 for the fries. I asked the waitress why and she said the extra charge was because I wanted two sauces. Now the sauces were in those tiny little cups! I was never told about the up charge on anything when ordering. My $19 lunch came to $30 with 15% tip. I almost always tip 20% or better but this was substandard treatment. The place wasn't even crowded. Food is good here but is not so good. I've been coming here since I was knee high to a grasshopper. Seriously, my BFF and I used to walk here as kids from our Beacon Hill neighborhood and have lunch before stopping across the street at 7-11 for a dessert of Slurpees and gummy bears. Now, as an adult, I can appreciate this place even more, even though I don't live anywhere close to here anymore. The food is still good, but there's a nice beer selection as well. Had a plate of salad, her food was bad with hair in it and they saw that I gave her a taco and then up charged my salad. I said why would u do that I can't get extra tacos it doesn't cost u more? Very friendly staff. No pretenses. Food comes as ordered with a smile. Better than average bar food- wings are good, as are the burgers, nachos, and roast beef au jus sandwich. One of my favorites is a BLT with an egg and cheese thrown in the middle. Supposedly the best ribs in town, but I beg to differ- they're not housemade (the sauce could possibly be, but the ribs are the babyback kind that come in a Kryo-vac bag like Chili's or Fridays). I've been to Stanley's Tavern a couple times now. This review is from the third time that I went there. I was a bit disappointed the first time - their ribs have been touted as the best in the area. I got a half rack via takeout taxi, and didn't find them to be anything to write home about. Stanley's has come highly recommended by many friends, and I was beginning to question their taste. I decided to actually go in to the tavern next time instead of ordering through takeout taxi. The restaurant itself is pretty huge. There's a large bar area with some of the original seats from Veterans Stadium, a huge buffet area, and tables tucked in everywhere. Their menu wound up being pretty impressive - kobe beef burgers, steak tips with hollandaise and various other tasty things were listed. I try to avoid buffets, so I didn't really see what they had there. I wound up with a crab cake sandwich, which wasn't bad. If I had got it at a diner or something, I'd have thought it was great, but here, I didn't think it lived up to the "wow factor" of the menu. That was a couple months ago. Today, I needed lunch. Nothing too fancy, but something a bit better than diner food, or a chain restaurant. I decided to head back to Stanley's. Having been there a couple times now, I set my expectations a half a notch lower, and this time, they hit the mark. One of their specials was a "Steak Pizza". I was a bit nervous. It was a pizza with steak tips, caramelized onions and a cracked pepper hollandaise. I'm a bit picky about my pizzas in that I don't see tomato sauce as something that is "optional". There are very few pizzas that I like that don't involve tomato sauce. I'm also a bit picky about my hollandaise. I wasn't sure how this would all go on a pizza, but I figured I'd give it a chance. When it came out, the meat distribution was pretty uneven, and the crust didn't look like I usually expect a good pizza crust to look, but after trying it, my fears were proven to be unfounded. Yes, the crust isn't what I'd want a 18in pepperoni pie on - actually, pie is a good word - it was much like a pie crust, but it worked for this. I had only planned on eating a couple pieces, and saving the other half for later, but that plan didn't work out too well. I devoured this pizza. I could eat another one right now. So, now that I've been to Stanley's a couple times and know what it is, and what it isn't, I've decided that I do really like it. I wouldn't bring a date there for a romantic evening, or go there and expect food like I would get at Krazy Kats, but it beats the pants off of chain restaurants hands down, the staff are friendly, and they do have some pretty decent higher-end items. I'd give them a solid 4 out of 5. Now that Bourbon Street up in Claymont closed down, Stanley's will probably be my new "go to" tavern. We used to frequent Stanley's years ago for restaurant or the local bar hang out. The food was good and the atmosphere fun! However, we visited a couple weeks ago for the first time in years and it was a huge disappointment. We are older now with three kids so maybe just more picky. The salad bar was still good, fresh with a lot of options. But the food we ordered off the menu was below average at best. My husband ordered fish and chips and had to send it back and this man never sends anything back! It was one large hunk of fish that was overcooked and dry. My older son Got a chicken sandwich that seemed like it was sitting out for an hour before making it to the table. We will not be going back. read more

We went there on St. Patrick's Day (2012) to have a bite to eat and see an Irish band. When we arrived, we enquired about the band and were told they "retired," not for the night, but permanently. Anyway, we had some poorly prepared shrimp served by an inexperienced, rude waiter. We were both sick the next day. Avoid this place and go to Ulysses instead if you want good beer and food. I'm a fan of Stanleys. Its a neighborhood joint, but I like places that are kid friendly, but have good food and beer selections. The broccoli bites are seriously delicious. Like cheesey tempura broccoli goodness with a bacon ranch dressing. II always comment that we should have ordered another one. The food is consistant, the service is decent. Its a taaad overpriced for what it is which is the only thing that keeps us at bay. They're always crowded, so I don't think it hurts their business much! read more

My wife and I dine at Stanley's every couple of months. It's a bit dark inside (no windows to speak of) and many TVs (typical sports bar environment). The food is OK. On our most recent visit I had the Stanley's Original grilled. This is basically a 1/2 lb ham sandwich. It was good - not spectacular. We split a side of sweet potato fries. The fries were not fried enough - too baked potato-like. Chick-fil-a does these much better. On many visits I'll have the Wings and Things. Wings and a variety of mainly fried things that are bad for you - I like it! In summary, Stanley's is kind of a middle-of-the-road, tavern-food place. Not bad, but not great. Certainly good enough to keep coming back every couple of months. read more

I am at Stanley's about every six weeks because my husband likes to go there. Me, not at all because I find the food overpriced (especially the salad bar for a small eater) and the non-salad bar food not much better than just OK. But I wanted to try the Sunday brunch this morning. I love eggs benedict. The menu said the benedict would be ham, poached eggs, and hollandaise on a croissant. Sounded great to me. But somewhere in the conversation with the server, he got the idea I didn't want ham on my benedict, so I had to send it back to have the ham added. The dish didn't get slices of ham, but rather a mound of shaved ham. (This revisionist presentation made me think of the term "ham fisted.") Despite that disappointment, I dug in, only to find that the poached eggs had no run to the yolk; they were hard cooked. I asked for extra hollandaise to save the dish from "dry," but that didn't help. The Mimosa also was odd. It was served in a stemmed Margarita glass with the bowl of the glass completely filled with ice. That made for a small portioned and watery Mimosa. For my second Mimosa I asked for a non-stemmed glass and no ice. The drink was much better that way, although there still was some ice provided. Despite a great price of $12 for the food and $5 per Mimosa, I don't plan to return to Stanley's for Sunday brunch. Two stars ONLY for the good salad bar. Dry rub ribs were VERY salty and skimpy - a small portion compared to what others at our table got.. Fried portabella fries were not crispy and overly salty too. French fries were not cooked - pale & limp. Wedding soup tasted like Campbell's soup. Would have given it zero stars except their salad bar was very good. This was our second try there and we won't be back. read more
