I agree with Sam H. about Stan's and also prefer NC-style thin vinegary sauces (and on pork, big surprise). There's nothing like a good pig pickin'! The owners of Stan's are staunch Democrats and really nice people, very committed to the Issaquah community and that makes me like them and I do eat there once in a while. The BBQ chicken is the best thing there for me. I ask them to go easy on the sauce. I don't like their corn at all... it tastes weird to me. The restaurant is clean and so are the restrooms. I've found that if they have something completely obnoxious on the TV, if there's not too many people there who are watching it, they are completely good-natured about changing the channel, so speak up. :-) Stan's fries are good but not incredible. The baked beans are the best side, for my money. Popped in to get some brisket on Mother's Day to take home. Hadn't been here in quite a while but my memories from last time weren't bad. Wondering if something has changed or that was just a bad day. ‍ I absolutely love brisket, It's one of those things that you wonder how people can be vegan. It was the worst brisket I've ever had compared to the awesome brisket my brothers make or my regular bbq place in Duvall. The meat was tough, hardly any flavor I asked for 'with fat' (I love that burnt fat) and there was barely any and it had little flavor. It almost seemed like this wasn't cooked long enough, when I make a roast in my crock pot it tastes better and is more tender than that. And it was sliced thick like a 'ham steak' could barely chew through it. Now either my regular barbecue place is that exceptional or there was something wrong with the brisket this day or it's like this every day. I was also disappointed that I could not just buy meat by the pound, and I was forced to get sides. Spent $60+ they were not busy and service was pleasant. At first, I was going to throw out the meat last night. I was that disappointed (we got 1 1/2lbs) but I slept on it and sliced pieces that were edible off to make a sandwich the next day. Long story short: the sandwiches aren't that great. The atmosphere is good and lively. Friendly service. The menu has a good assortment. I loved the pork and beans, the creamed corn, etc. But the brisket was dry and tough. And the sandwiches had too much meat. I'd give this place a solid 3.5 stars. The BBQ itself is excellent. Brisket and pulled pork were smoked to perfection and their hot sauce had a nice kick to it. 1/2lb is plenty if you're hungry! It is slightly expensive however and I wasn't a fan of the side dishes. The potato salad was average at best and tasted like the generic kind you get from the grocery store. The cole slaw lacked a bit of dressing or flavoring all together. Was hard to justify the near $50 price tag for 2 meals and 2 beers but it was still quite tasty none the less. I love this place so much. I've been coming here since high school and it never disappoints. The portions are massive, but not only that, it tastes GOOD. BBQ here is usually sticky, tiny portioned, and tastes like its pre-frozen, but Stans is the real thing. Ok so I haven't actually been to the South but I assume it tastes like the real thing. We usually get the large combo platters since our group usually consists of at least four people. Their chicken is super juicy and well seasoned, and even the turkey is flavorful. But the real deal is the big platter that comes with ribs, sausage, brisket, pulled pork, and creamed corn. The sausage is spicy and tasty, and the brisket and pulled pork are always the right amount of fat to lean. The sauces are vinegar based and are excellent on their own right, and doesn't mask the meat. Special mention to the creamed corn though. It's a mix of cream, cayenne, and super fresh corn. The smoke smell when you walk it is just what you would expect from a bbq place, but there isn't the old grime you often find in lower quality bbq shacks. I'm very picky about my barbecue, if it's too smoky or the smoke isn't done right it tastes bitter to me. Stan's does it perfectly. So perfectly in fact I ordered more to take home. I got the pulled pork and a side of their potato salad. It was so good. Drink prices are pretty outrageous: $3.25 for a pop. The food is on the expensive side ($13.99 for a sandwich with one side) and there's no onions or anything served with the sandwich. I had $25 off Gift Certificate from Restaurant.com, and I was so eager to use it - had to spend $35 to use the discount. I ordered Who's your daddy? and half-rack of Baby Back Ribs. I gotta say the ribs were the best thing from this restaurant. Meat fell right off the bones and they had hot, medium and sweet(?) sauce. Beef Brisket was juicy and tender. Lunch time. What to eat. We decided to try Stan's BBQ. Simple, comfortable bar and small, rustic restaurant. Saloon type. Lots of guys lol. When you walk in, you are greeted by the aroma of a smoke house. A true BBQ lover's delight. We ordered the 'who's your daddy' platter which had a sampler of ribs, shredded pork, smoked brisket and a few sausages. It came with two sides. We chose the potato salad and pork n beans. Although the meat had a nice smokey flavor, the meat was very dry. Every type of neat was dry and needed massive amounts of BBQ sauce. Ribs Pale looking, inpenetrable by a fork, likely sponsored by rubber-maid and smelled/tasted like chemicals were added. Liquid smoke? After one bite I stopped and nobody else tried it at my table after only smelling them and my impression. Massive massive failure here. Brisket Good, fatty, juicy, fell apart very well. However no smoke ring and they appeared almost boiled with the color of the meat and how wet the slices were. Everyone ate all of the brisket. Pulled pork Moist and tender, but again had an odd taste. Nobody enjoy it, especially after trying the brisket. A few bites and we all stopped. Hot links Just ok. Not the worst we've had, but definitely not the best. We didn't want to eat more than one or two bites as the brisket was massively better. Summary While brisket was the clear winner everything was easily forgettable. I don't know how this place is claiming Kansas City. I've had impressively good BBQ there among many other places. In fact one of my favorite places is in KC. One interesting note. I reviewed past reviews on Yelp about this place and many people have indicated that the food has no smokey flavor. Ours did yet nothing had a smoke ring. Possible this place is using some terrible tasting liquid smoke that doesn't work with their base flavors?
