I have been excited about going here for months. They make a big hype with the whole reservation concept. We got there and there were plenty of seats and tables open. I wanted to like the food so much but I didn't. The king crab did not taste fresh. I told our waiter we couldn't even eat the liver tart and he didn't seem too concerned. I think their idea is, if we don't like something it is our fault not theirs. We ended up canceling the rest of our order and leaving. From the reviews I had seen, I had high expectations coming in here tonight. I am very pleased to say that Staplehouse exceeded those expectations. From the second you walk in the door you are greeted warmly and made to feel like an old friend. What is even more spectacular is that as the evening moves on you do truly feel like one of the family. I particularly enjoyed stealing a moment here and there to express my joy and talk flavors with Assistant General Manager Melissa Davis. She was a delight to talk to and incredibly sincere in her desire for me to have a great exoerience. This comes across through all the staff. I had the extreme pleasure of having Kristin as my server. She was fantastic and I had a fun time geeking out and talking about the the phenominal food with her. In fact, all the staff I interacted with were friendly. knowledageble, and just fun as hell to talk to. :) Let's talk about the food... becuase amazing vibes and incredible people aside... it really comes down to the food right? I had a great view of the open kitchen and was pleased as heck when I realized the dish I watched the staff meticulously asemble for at least 3-4 minutes was my incredible aged duck. On top of all of this, Staplehouse is a for-profit subsidiary of The Giving Kitchen, a nonprofit organization. Staple House: the epitome of creativity, simplicity, and presentation. The food is spectacular and the presentation is flawless. The uniqueness in every dish is draw-dropping. I had the tasting menu... 1. Okra filled cracker - good starter with unique flavor 2. Ribeye Tartare - this steak tartare with Australian Spinach and pear topping was fabulous. Rich meat with unique complements. 3. Heated crab and veggies - Delicious, sweet, blue crab meat warmed to a good temperature and it was mouth-watering. It had a light spice to it which was nicely counter balanced by the peppers and asparagus. 4. Bean and Tomato dish - This dish was great. A juicy ripe tomato with thick beans and a handmade cracker. Very one-of-a-kind course. 5. Liver tart - I don't love liver so I'm not going to write anything good nor bad. (The others with whom I was eating thought it was good.) 6. The steak - fabulous, juicy cut of steak well seasoned with various mild spices. ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC! 7. Bread - Handmade, family recipe with in-house-whipped butter. 8. Kombucha - good palate cleanse before dessert. 9. It's really tough carving through the raw pretentiousness of this place. I found the menu very good particularly the king crab and the beef dish and our waiter was very competent. The cobia ($38) had a strong fish smell with a fishy taste. When I brought it to our waiters attention I was told by a staff person that the dish was cooked as "intended ". The chef unceremoniously blew me off. He was filling in for the professional chef who had the night off and clearly lacked the social skills to work out a simple problem with a diner. They did take the item off the check when I pushed back. They seemed horrified that anyone would question their gastronomic expertise. I've eaten at high end restaurants in NY, LA, Europe. A fantastic dining experience. The Staplehouse is an upscale place when it comes to fine cooking, even though it has an unassuming atmosphere. This is for sure the finest dinner I ever had in all Atlanta. The 8-course tasting menu (or was it 10?) let's you forget about the world for a while. Absolutely Ah-mazing! The food, ambiance, knowledgeable and engaging staff (Brandon is a rockstar)... are all top notch. We tried one of everything, tried the house cocktails, indulged on dessert and completely feel in love with this place. This is by far the best dining experience in ATL but only for a discerning palette. If you're a picky eater and not willing to try new favors and combinations, don't waste their time. I plan to set a monthly reminder to ensure a routine reservation, it's really that good! And my admiration is only heightened by learning the story behind the place. What a wonderful night! Make sure you get a reservation; one on the most popular restaurants in town, you'll need one! We arrived early and went up to the Paper Plane lounge. beautiful and cozy. The cocktails don't have listed ingredients, which evoke a sense of whimsy and was a great start to the night. Our server was highly attentive and we never wanted for anything. Jeremy the bartender, however was the highlight of our evening! Very knowledgeable, sincere, not pushy, and very kind. We basically have him carte blanche on what to order for wine and we were not disappointed. The food was all beautifully presented and expertly expertly prepared. Yes, the food here is excellent, as is the service, ambience, and overall experience. We went as a party of 4 and ordered the entire menu. Most dishes were above average, but not greatly so. One of the fish dishes I didn't care for. Cocktails were very nice and our server helped us pick 2 good bottles of wine. What's not to love here? When we got home a couple hours later, my wife and I (neither of whom are in the big eaters club) had to cook up a frozen pizza because there frankly wasn't enough food at dinner. With a party of 4, perhaps we tended to not act selfishly and only took small bites of the dishes as they came out. But you can't hide the fact that the dishes are small. Tiny even. And some are salads, which don't fill you up to begin with. In fairness, I did starve myself the entire day in anticipation of the dinner. So lesson learned...don't do that. Overall I'm frankly over the whole fad of of ordering a bunch of tiny plates and leaving hungry. Give me a menu with a full dish that I don't need to share with anybody and a nearby defibrillator. Prior to go long we had heard mixed reviews on this place, some being thatt it was the best meal they have had in ATL and others that were not to waste our time and money! I agree with the second one and hope that the food used to be better when I was told it was so good. There was absolutely nothing special about this place. Much better places to dine in ATL. Out of all 9 courses the two desserts were the only things we enjoyed. -All the food was bland, or over seasoned and was way too salty. You couldn't taste anything they explained that was in the dish. -All the food was COLD. Even the three dishes that should have been atleast warm weren't, including the fish and the duck. Why are they serving people cold food? -I have had plenty of tasting menus and I have never left one hungry, until staplehouse. We were planning on where to go afterwards during our mediocre at best dinner. -The interior of the restaurant was just "meh" and average, also nothing special. -The beverage pairing was just ok, I think I enjoyed two out of the evening. The "wine guy" would tell each table, while pouring a different wine, that this was his favorite wine open. Although he did seem knowledgeable about the wine, the pairing lacked versatility. -The staff wore plaid shirts and jeans which I thought was odd for the price point of this restaurant. I'm torn on how to review this. The first time i ate here last year I selected what I wanted off the menu - it was also a Saturday night and we weren't dining at the bar. Now it's strictly a tasting menu pre-selected but still amazing. I only point it out because i would not order something with cucumbers but one of the courses was snapper covered with cucumbers and when i scraped those suckers off, i got a "we can note that for the future".... well, i don't want to make a big deal out of not liking them. Everything was delicious and well orchestrated. Jen cannot be any sweeter - seriously she is amazing, gracious, and beautiful. Our server was not the friendliest but the other waitstaff made up for it. This place was great! Besides trying to get a reservation here (which is nearly IMPOSSIBLE), Staplehouse is an experience worth having. They do accept walk-ins if there are no shows so you could take your chances! Their dishes are all seasonal so the menu constantly changes. The plates are very creative, tastey and all picture worthy. I'll say it's bit overpriced... the portions were small and even after ordering 4-5 plates my husband and I were not fully satisfied. I don't want to take away anything from the restaurant because their vision is so amazing and there are true artists in the kitchen. That's why I still give it 5 stars. However, it's not my type of restaurant. There is better tasting and more reasonably priced food in Atlanta than Staplehouse. In the end, if this type of restaurant still appeals to you I recommend checking it out. The service is spectacular. Otherwise, save yourself 100+ bucks. read more

This is not worth it. Very plain flavor for every dish. The starter with caviar was pretty good. Desert, strawberry sorbet and white chocolate strawberry cake, was delicious. Other than these two items, nothing was very tasty. Every dish had too much acidity that covers the original flavor of food material. It's not worth the price. The set menu does not make you full if you are an adult male. I would say Bacchanalia is way better in both taste and amount. Go for it. I head back to Atlanta just for this restaurant because I heard it was *the best* in town. But now I'm so so so disappointed. Service was not bad but nothing special. Seriously disappointing. I waited months and months to get a reservation and counted down the days when I finally got it. Being voted best new restaurant in the country put it high up on a pedestal, and I had to try it. Went in on a Saturday night in March and was promptly seated in their very small and cozy restaurant. Took forever to get a server to come to our table and when she did, she was so cold. We thought, whatever that's fine, ignore it. Except she went out of her way to be nice to all of her other tables around us. We know because we heard their conversations. She offered to tell them her favorite things on the menu, including drinks, which we certainly didn't get. In fact, when we asked about certain ingredients on the drink, she seemed so annoyed that we didn't know what the obscure licquors were. We tried a couple of the drinks and hated them, so ended up with a bottle of wine. Now for the food... I don't mind when restaurants just list the ingredients of their dishes, instead of the name. Don't mind at all. Except at this restaurant. Where the ingredients/preparations were so inaccurate. Told the server that I wanted the beef dish and she replied, "the tartare?". Nothing on that list indicated that this was going to be a beef tartare. And I was fine with it, I love tartare, but I hated the smug way she said tartare as if I was supposed to have said that (unknowingly). Anyway, I digress. The food overall, was not that great. Out of the 6 or so dishes we ordered, there was only like 2 that were worth eating, the tartare and the cabbage. Everything else was mediocre and lacking in flavor. Actually one dish, the mussels, completely ruined the rest. We got it in the middle (everything came out when they felt they should come out) and it had such a strong alkaline taste, mixed with the wine, it was terrible. Overall, great concept and great location. Loved the 2/6 dishes. I would recommend adding more meat dishes into their menu (a lot of vegetarian stuff for that price tag). We chatted with one of the founders (who was actually the hostess for the evening) and she was extremely nice and listened to all of our praise and criticism with open ears. I wouldn't pay for that experience again. We were so hungry, we ended up going somewhere else for more food that was far more satisfying. read more

Ok updating my review after seeing my credit card statement. I made a reservation by phone at 15:26 last Sunday because their online reservation system closes for same-day reservations at 15:00. I had a 7-minute conversation where the employee (Collin, sp?) took my contact information and credit card information. He explained that the charge was $105 per person for the tasting menu and that it was non-refundable as reservation was made within the 48-hour cancellation window. He also explained that if I wanted to do a wine-pairing I could either order via phone or when I got there. I said I would decide when I get there. So he charged my card $210 and I thought that was it... When I looked at my credit card statement, I see a $274.43 charge for 2 tasting menus (i.e. 2-person reservation). I called the restaurant and they explained that it was $210 + 8.9% tax + 20% hospitality fee. I was shocked. I asked the employee to clarify these charges, which he did, and then he said that I can refer to the website for more information. NOWHERE on the Staplehouse site or Tock's site for Staplehouse is there mention of a 20% hospitality fee. If you read the FAQ section on Tock's site for Staplehouse, it states under "Pre-payment" that the price "includes food, service, and taxes". Perhaps if I was able to make a reservation online I would have seen this information however the online system was closed thus I was forced to make a reservation by phone. The 8.9% tax and 20% hospitality fee information was NOT disclosed to me via phone. I would have never made a reservation if I had known the ultimate price was going to be more than $210 for 2 people. Staplehouse Management: I would like an answer as to how to rectify this situation. I called the restaurant this afternoon and was told I'd get a call from Cara (sp?) but so far no phone call. I know this may have been an honest mistake but it further detracts from my experience with your restaurant. This information should 1) be on both websites and 2) be disclosed at time of reservation if made by phone. read more

My significant other and I are on a mission to visit all of the top rated restaurants in Atlanta and we were extremely pleased with our experience here! I was a little nervous because the atmosphere is so casual, but the relaxed ambiance of the place only added to the experience! All seven courses were exquisite, and the little gifts (pallet cleansers) from the kitchen helped to perfect the meal. Each course had unique pairings and was perfectly balanced. I personally loved the Cobia and the liver paté tart. Some of the entrees (like the liver) were firsts for me, so the bar was set extremely high because it was all delectable. And not to mention, the cocktails and wine were just as great. Aside from the food, the wait-staff were top-notch...relaxed, genuine, and inviting. Lastly, I really appreciated the whole pre-pay aspect when making reservations, and didn't realize just how much I enjoyed that until we left dinner. And yes we spoke to the waiters about this. 3. Service) It's their way or the highway. If you don't abide by that they give you serious attitude...even heard the wait staff talk shit about us away from the table. We might be particular when it comes to food and wine but take it to the back of the kitchen, not within an ears distance!! . We always bring our own wine to dinner (we know what we like/want) but they won't let you keep bottles/decanters at your table so we had to ask for refills 5 or 6 times. Personally at the end of the day for the 3 of us to eat, including a set 20%tip + tax was $400, plus another $100 for two bottles of wine plus a few drinks upstairs, I wish I could undo it and take it back. Hands down the BEST meal I've had (and may ever have) in Atlanta. This place was recommended to us by a chef at Providence (one of the rare Michelin-starred restaurants in Los Angeles) and a few bites into our first dish, we could immediately see why. The menu changes all the time, so I won't bother recommending the amazing things you may not be able to try yourself. But no matter what they're serving, I recommend you do this: Sit at the bar, order the whole menu, and ask the (incredibly friendly and fun) bartenders to make up a drink pairing for you. I am so confused by Staplehouse and do not understand why this restaurant has such great rating. It truly was a sub par experience and the food was not preferable in our opinion. The pros: its in a cool area. their mission-their partnership with the giving kitchen is such a great community resource and I applaud their continued support. the desserts-they were pretty good. The cons: We had a 5:45 dinner reservation on a Friday, since that was the only time we could get a week out. We have small kids, and my wife and I wanted to leave our neighborhood enclave and try something new. trying to make a 5:45 dinner reservation on a Friday afternoon in Atlanta is a feat and I may have broken some speeding laws, but again I did not want be scolded since I knew how tough it was to get a reservation. We were literally the first people in the restaurant and they were still setting some of the tables. For a nice restaurant at this price point, you should be ready. Not only that, the place was completely empty and pretty much stayed that way for about an hour and a half after our reservation. The food was just not good. Each course was cold and not really appealing to the eye. I should have taken a picture of the gelatin beef tartare. I just pictured this dish being presented on a show like Top Chef and it getting supremely criticized. It honestly looked like the gel that you see when you put slow-cooked short ribs into the fridge overnight. That gelatinous mess was a course on their menu. It was not appetizing. All the food was cold or luke warm. There were no hot dishes. The waiters explained that it was a seasonal menu focusing on root vegetables, yet there were no soups or purees of said root vegetables. We basically had nine courses of luke warm or cold rutabagas, parsnips, and carrots in their original form. It may be some patrons preferences to eat cold root vegetables, but not mine. Drinks were fine-nothing spectacular. My old fashioned was watered down and basic, but it was certainly better that the cold parsnips and cold carrot pudding I was served. Service was fine. I found it interesting that the waiters were dressed very casually. I get rustic, but I think the waitstaff is better dressed at Highland Bakery for brunch. Prior to coming to Staplehouse, I had heard mixed reviews, but wanted to give it a try because of their partnership with the giving kitchen and the hype surrounding the restaurant. Quite good but a bit over hyped. The food was good but not phenomenal. I expected it to be as amazing as Better Half was (they no longer exist but did morph into Pulpit Suppers), but it's not even close. I'm glad I tried it, but once was plenty. They serve one meal and you don't know what it is until you get there. It's a 7 course tasting menu for $137 charged a month or more in advance. They then charged $7 for coffee and ice tea during the meal. I would have preferred to have been charged $145 for the meal in advance--it seemed a bit petty to charge for tea and coffee during the meal although if i ordered alcohol, I'd have understood the additional charge. The service was exceptional and well informed about what was being served. The staff was very nice and the other diners seemed happy to be there. The restaurant holds 26 diners inside at one time. It wasn't full when I was there. They serve Intelligensia Coffee which is OUTSTANDING!! The best part of the meal, for me, was the strawberry dessert. read more

Acelyn B and I finally scored ourselves some a seating to celebrate our 3rd anniversary. It was every bit a celebration for our palates. I noticed the 90s hip hop (REAL hip hop) playing and was delighted. Shortly after we received drinks, we began our 10-course journey. Each course felt tastier than the previous. By the 4th, we couldn't imagine how things would get better and yet they did. Their menu is obviously well thought in technique and a range of flavors that dance on the tongue. There were moments that I caught myself just savoring the bite and enjoying where the flavors took me. The halibut particularly took me home to mom's cooking. Unfortunately, (and sorry, mom and dad) I did not grow up on the elevated technique the kitchen applies at Staplehouse. Staplehouse is worth the hype and so much more. After reading and hearing so much about it, I had very high expectations, but it met and exceeded them. It's worth fighting for that reservation. I had a party of four, and our table was ready for us as soon as we walked in. We started off with the cocktails, which were also fantastic. I had the autumn daiquiri, which the name of the drink says it all. It was a great drink with warm notes of spice without being too overpowering. Now onto the good stuff. Since the plates are smaller, we ended up ordering one of everything on the menu. This is definitely the move if you have at least 3-4 people. We were pretty full even though we only got a couple bites of each plate. Each plate they bring out to us is an art of its own. They explain the details of each dish and the local ingredients they use as they bring the food out to you. There are small gaps between each plate, but it's not an awkwardly long pause. You end up really looking forward to the next plate since you get to savor the flavors of each plate. You definitely shouldn't expect to be in and out very quickly here. Now the menu changes every couple weeks or so, depending on what's in season. My favorite dishes were the snapper and the carrots. The snapper is a very fresh sashimi, but the other components of the dish add such great flavor and texture. The carrot dish is incredible, which sounds funny to say about a simple vegetable. It's cooked in this delicious creamy sauce, which the table could not get enough of. The persimmon dessert was the end of our meal, and we left very happy and full. The story behind the restaurant is touching, and the food is incredible. The service is also an A+. Parking is complimentary valet, so no need to worry about fighting for a spot. Y I'm almost hesitant to write this review, raving about Staplehouse since it's already so hard to get a reservation, but they deserve it and so much more. read more

I am going to leave the pictures of out this review simply because the artistic presentation of every dish should be a surprise. Flat out, this restaurant deserves to be the "best new restaurant in America". Grab a reservation when they become available and be prepared for an artistically delicious experience through dozens of local farms. Just enjoy. read more

Despite being a self-described "casual neighborhood restaurant," the feeing of exclusivity has been contrived to begin early in the process here. One feels fortunate to obtain a reservation "on release" (or even better, to have one "transferred" to you from a friend, as in our case). The feeling is underscored when you must pay a deposit to hold your reservation (after all this is a "charity"). They have nine items on the menu, one of which is bread, and one of which is dessert. It is suggested that a party of two order "five to seven" of the menu items to have a sufficient meal. Waiters reference the obscure farms from which their items "are coming to us" (a description uniformly delivered in the progressive tense) implying that the typical customer in Atlanta's Old Fourth Ward is deeply ingrained within the agricultural community and that the food somehow arrived here entirely of its own accord. It would appear they used a thesaurus to derive mysterious nomenclature for several of the otherwise commonplace vegetables on the menu. The food was well executed, if not as inspiring as the buildup and sanctimony would imply. Naturally it costs an arm and a leg. Staplehouse is the very cutting edge of culinary arrogance within today's uber-hipster dining ethos: so self-assuredly superior that they even feign not to be. read more
