On my recent trip to Staples I brought a pencil sharpener to return that I had purchased online. I went to the front because there was no line at the time and I have been stuck in long ones before. The person working the register got my order id and then hands me a receipt. He was not trained to confirm the details about the amount of my return. Unfortunately I was only given back the value of 60 % the cost of the item online and 50% of the cost in store. The month before this I had placed an online order that never arrived so part of my purchase was using a credit, but not the kind of credit that requires a minimum purchase. So I asked if I could exchange the item instead and he called a manager who was not interested in even listening and she called some 800 number and handed the phone to me. If the employee had confirmed the amount of the return I would have been able to do an exchange, but his failure to do that cost me money. And the manager was unwilling to cancel the return so I left without my pencil sharpener and lost the credit that they gave me for failing to deliver my order. This is not a lot of money, but i expent cashiers to be competent and I expect managers to train them. The store manager was awful, did not care about the customer and took no responsibility for running the store. read more

My experience at Staples in Solana Beach was pleasant. There wasn't immediate service as I think they were understaffed, however someone did come to assist at the Passport Center and was very attentive and helpful. They made sure I knew how to look at the camera, took several photos and made sure I like what I got. Thank you! read more

For the first time, I ordered something from a 3rd party and requested it to be shipped to this Staples. Seemed simple enough. I arrived today after receiving the UPS email that pick-up was available. One person at the front desk working, so waited several minutes then waited again some minutes for the person to help other people then walk to another section across the store to locate the package. I provided the UPS and third-party email, but they said they needed an access code, which was not on the UPS email (though the staff told me it was, despite her looking at it with me). Couldn't find, then she said she needed an i.d. also. I went to my car to get, waited in line again, then her check-in phone said she still needed an access code, which wasn't on the email. Another person, Veronica, arrived to help at the front, so I asked her for help finding the code. She scrolled down on my phone below where it said, "You need an id to pick up this package" to a last line that read, "You must have an access code," which code was not provided. She said, with an attitude, pointing rudely at my screen, "There, you didn't look far enough." When I again asked for help finding the access code, she put her back to me and VERY RUDELY said, "I don't know, I don't buy things that way." The end. And to be clear, there was no one in line at that point, so she just didn't want to be bothered. I returned to my car and was able with my son's help to find the access code on the third party site by opening the tracking number and clicking a couple things (not in the UPS email as the previous staff had indicated and not at all accessible for someone using the service for the first time). Fortunately, the other staff helped retrieve the package, though when I walked in with my son, Veronica was saying "She's got another thing coming." No idea who she was talking about (it was spoken indirectly to the other staff), but again rude and unprofessional in a business setting. The worst customer "service" I have experienced in memory. Never mind the multiple waiting periods, which of course weren't acknowledged. Just a nasty staff person who couldn't be bothered to help out someone clearly working hard to look for the requested information, instead giving loads of attitude. I know you're understaffed, Staples mgmt, but you don't need employees who treat people like that. There's enough ugliness in the world; I don't need to go to Staples for an additional share. I will avoid going there again as much as possible and will certainly never use them as a pickup point in the future. read more

Terrible customer service . No one around to ask for help . Needed file boxes and asked the cashier where they were. She didn't know . She got on her microphone to ask some else and they were asking her to ask me what type. I was clear. Filing boxes . She spent over 5 min and there other customers lining up to pay . She finally asked for help at the register. The additional sales person that came to help finally knew the answer . By that time I had already paid for my other items. I'll shop here to drop off Amazon returns for the convenience , and get the file folders that I need ...and now that I know where the file boxes are located ...but the availability of help and service is not the best . read more

I've been waiting for help for 30 minutes for the TSA PRECHECK line. No one here. The other employees say go over there and wait and no one is there, even with an appointment. There were two people with appointments waiting. I finally ask the employees to please help find him. He comes in nonchalant no apology at all. Like who's next when 30 minutes late. No interaction just starts helping the woman waiting as well. There has to be an element of some customer service even at a tsa precheck especially when it's a staples employee. read more

I would avoid their print service like the plague. I submitted an order of 5 copies on my own sticker stock in the afternoon. They told me they'll email me when the order is done. The following morning there was no notification, so I called and left a message. By noon, my message was still not returned, and there was no email notification that the order was done. I came over, and it turned out they made copies on the wrong side of sticker paper. At drop off they assured me they knew the difference. Never again. read more

After waiting at the passport photo kiosk for 20 minutes I dared to ask an employee if it was a do it yourself service. She told me to just wait they are VERY busy. I apologized for asking a question. Ten minutes later an employee took my photos. Then I asked for copies of documents to be printed. I was referred to self-service. After following all the steps - the codes sent to me by staples did not work. I approached full service and the employee was condescending and I decided to match her energy. She questioned me regarding the steps I took to complete my copy process. I told her. She spoke to me like I was five years old and asked each question again. She took my phone and said to wait for another code. I went back to the self service machine. The code never came. Another employee hovered offering to help. I let him know what was happening and he told me to go outside because the wifi would work better. This was after the machine had already taken my payment information- I was just supposed to go outside and wait patiently. Other customers came in and had the same trouble I had. It was clear when I spoke to other customers that my frustration was building. After being chastised and being treated like a five year old Esteban let me know I didn't need to give him attitude because he wasn't giving me attitude. I let him know how I felt about this horrible experience and left. No copies. I hate Solana Beach Staples. Worst service of all office retailers. read more

Today I stopped by to return 2 Amazon items. Young lady Lindsey was helping another person at the printer and said she be with me as soon as she can. No problem. I waited for maybe 8 min or so while she asked him this and that about his print job. Do you it bound like this, printed like that powerpoint or PDF ... I asked should I come back in an hour so. I wanted make sure she could finish her job. The guy had already left. She came over to see me and said "I told you I'd be with you in a min." To which I replied I was only asking so that you had enough time to finish your work. Her reply? "It's been a long day. You never know if someone is giving you attitude or not!" What??? Had a very similar experience to Dave below. Waited for 15 full minutes to have the print person scan my return...but she kept ignoring me and having a full on conversation with the print job about boys and Encinitas, etc. while I get the other customer was there first, maybe if you offer quick and easy returns you should have a dedicated employee for it. It takes like 30 seconds to scan a QR code...unless you go here and the employee doesn't care at all. After 15 minutes I politely asked if she wouldn't mind pausing to scan my item and she said she would mind...so I Left because I had a kid to pickup and it wasn't worth it, but yikes this is a bad customer service experience and I'll never choose them again for any service at all. I rarely experience excellent customer service at big box stores, but this Staples in Solana Beach surprised me! I had a last minute print job with special sizing, and was at the end of my rope trying to print from home. I came into the Solana Beach Staples store, frazzled and with very low expectations, but I shouldn't have been worried. I was greeted with a 'Welcome' and a friendly smile, and then Natalie got to work trying to understand my project. Turns out she not only understood what was needed, but got to work right away. She was so very patient with me and helpful. Needless to say, the printing project turned out a lot better than anything I could do at home. Are you pulling your hair out with a project? Ive gone in on a few occasions to purchase items needed for my small business. Like labeler, register, getting sheets laminated and more. Went in to buy a register around noonish as they were presented on the website and in stock. The staff said "we are not knowledge I need to look it up on google" was not sure about which register would work best for a short term 2-3 day short notice deal to accept form of credit cards and at a swap meet. He didnt have any recommendations. Recommended me to buy a square register that allowed cash which is like 1100 dollars. I have a website from them. I purchased said register that said electronic expecting an electronic display ran by batteries. Well this is a plug in 3 outlet wall gig. So i returned, full refund and purchased a magstripe. Am now currently at 10 pm working on website wasted my day now i have 1 day to finish this Also regarding their lamination, im not huge or worried about it myself but for those that are serious and need good lamination, they needed to trim the edges because of bubbling. Would not highly recommend as they have product and services others might need and can be urgent/short notice but would advise you to consider another store for your needs. read more

Eventually we happened upon this store in our on-line search and were most satisfied. Darrell, the tech supervisor, was completely on top of his game. He knew a lot about technology, asked me what my needs were and directed me to the proper printer, an Epson with refillable ink wells. It was on sale but he looked to see if there were any coupons I could use to further save on the price. It was awesome and this type of service continues to make me a very loyal customer!
