Shrimp alexander with kale et al foreground; fried oysters

It was certainly worth the travel time and distance from S. Asheville to try this quirky and delicious restaurant. We left enough time in our trip to walk the streets and over the bridge in Marshall to take in the area. Eating in the small indoor seating area was intimate, cool, and quiet. The retro deco was interesting and evoked conversation. Kate ushered us to our table; Bri was our friendly and helpful server. We shared appetizers and split the generous serving of lobster fettuccine. In retrospect, should have order a bread serving to sop up the sauces and juices. Fried shrimp Alexander and crispy fried oysters were cooked to perfection. The added greens that accompanied them were appreciated and sufficed as a mimi-salad. The shrimp were large and juicy. The oysters, albeit, breaded retained the flavorful taste of the raw. The lobster entree was a delight. Large chunks of sweet cold water lobster pieces decorated our individual plate (there is a fee to split). The noodles and sauce was a perfect complement to the seafood. The vanilla creme brulee with pineapple chutney topping was a wonderful finish to our meal.

Found this small hole in the wall diner in the small historic downtown of Marshall. It's an old gas station turned into a restaurant. Visiting from Florida and decided to check out this spot. PHENOMENAL FOOD!! Highly recommend this spot. The Brussels sprouts were delicious, prob my fav app. We ordered the seafood pasta dish and wow. So much flavor! Happy I decided to check out this spot. Great food, great service and great ambience. Will def recommend to friends visiting Asheville!

Oh. My. Goodness! Magnolia Inn of Hot Springs closed their restaurant, which is where we would normally have dinner during our weekend getaways. Fortunately, they recommended that we try this restaurant called Star Diner in Marshall. I am ever so glad that they recommended this place. We made a 6:30 pm reservation for a Saturday night. We were sat quickly upon arrival. They have all outdoor seating under an awning in the front of the restaurant. Upon first being sat, I honestly didn't have high hopes for the place; perhaps it was being guided to our table through uneven pavement, dirt and gravel followed by a wobbly table and chairs. Or maybe it was the idea of an upscale menu with a blue collar dress code. It could have been the horrible dinner from the night before that was still rattling around my brain. Whatever the cause, I was very pessimistic from the start. I ordered a sweet tea to drink and my husband had a water. The menu was very simple, yet exotic. Our server was polite and attentive. We ordered Almond Crusted Brie and Beet Salad for appetizers. I did take a trip to the all-gender restroom between the appetizer and entree, and it was very clean. Also very different compared to most public restrooms. It's a single restroom with one door to the hallway. You can see shapes of the people walking down the hallway through the foggy glass while you're sitting on the toilet. I assume that you can't see inside the restroom as easily. They also provide real towels to dry your hands. Not paper towels that you throw away, but real towels attached to a chain that gets discarded into a linen hamper. Very unique and I kinda liked it. Onto the food... Typically, you would think of beets being a bland side dish to your turnkey with thanksgiving dinner, and never even consider it for the rest of the year. I am not exaggerating when I say that a plate of beets have never tasted so good and I will never look at beets the same ever again. The beets basked in cashew pesto was a perfect pair to the goat cheese. I didn't even know that I liked goat cheese, and now, I absolutely love it. I ordered the Chicken Saltimbocca and my husband had the Beef Short ribs. The mashed potatoes were perfectly cooked. It was easy to tell they were homemade and not some potato powder out of a box. They were so light and fluffy and delicious. The chicken tasted so good with the melted Prosciutto on top. It was too much food for my little tummy to take, but you bet your bottom dollar that I ate until I was STUFFED. The chicken was high quality and juicy as a fresh watermelon. Every bite had liquid oozing from the white chicken meat, but in a good way. A very good way. I tasted my husband's short ribs and I have never had a bite of cow that was so tender and screaming with flavor. We were both so full by the end of the meal that we had to order our desserts togo. Once we got back to our room in Hot Springs, and after our food settled in our tummies, we dug into the gourmet deserts. Both deserts were absolute heaven, but I will say that I liked the cheese pie better than the chocolate; the cheese pie tasted like cream cheese and was a pleasant sweet treat whereas the chocolate pie was more of a bitter chocolate overload and not as sweet. Overall, I cannot say enough good things about the food here. It is a bit spendy as restaurants go, but it is worth every single penny. If I were on death row, and they asked me to place an order for my last meal, I would hands down choose food from this establishment. If you haven't been here before, GO. Like now. Just go. You won't regret it.

So amazing!! Can't believe I've been living in Mars Hill now for 2 years and haven't been to the downtown part of Marshall! I went last Sunday and found this diner and I can't wait to go back. the prime rib I got here with cheesy mashed potatoes and asparagus was such a good comfort food and kept me warm since we did have to sit outside. That would be my only complaint is the chilly outdoor seating but it's decorated so cute I didn't mind. The best part though is the goat cheese shrimp and grits which I haven't seen anywhere else and will really keep me coming back again.

Delightful! Yes, I just used that word to describe a dining experience. It really was! First you absolutely can't beat the decor and atmosphere, second our waitress was absolutely first class, third the food was scrumptious! Highly recommend getting the bread service- wow! Most delicious crusty French bread I have ever had and whatever they are putting into that whipped butter is incredibly delicious! I wasn't a huge fan of the anchovies in the Caesar salad but my fiancé thought it was delicious (I don't like fishy things in general so it's my fault for not reading the description) I had the pork shoulder as my main and it was falling off eh bone and delicious - fiancé had the lobster fettuccine and it was so so good! Our friends had the chicken and gave it rave reviews as well. Can't wait to come back!

Wow-just Wow! Who would expect this in Marshall? White table cloth, unique interior, creative menu, decent wine list. Kate, our server was very pleasant and attentive-not overbearing. I had escargot, the seafood pasta and chocolate pot d creme. The seafood pasta offered generous chunks of lobster, shrimp and scallops in a Cajun cream sauce-one of my favorites! It was delicious! Escargots were perfect, swimming in butter with a puff pastry in the center. The chocolate dessert was not to sweet but so full of chocolate -loved it. I will make a point to visit again next time I go there.

Every time we visit Mars Hill we stop at Star Diner. The food is outstanding and the staff are so nice! The pork schnitzel was our families fav but the chicken Saltimbocca and shrimp and grits were amazing also!

I like the variety and the soul food sides with your fish. The crab Rangoons with the chili sauce was yummy! I tried the Henny Island because I as curious if Henny could be a girl drink....it's a tomgirl It might bully you a bit, but still sweet. The service was quick. Harmony was nice and checked on us. You can tell they really want you to get comfortable and enjoy yourself because they put butcher paper on the table. Eat the goodies and leave the shells behind is the message I received. And right now they're playing some Christmas music with a little boogie to it, so I know the play list is jumping in a regular day. I would eat here again-and when I do, I'm ordering those greens-so be ready Crab DJ

This time our server was not only quick, but also knew the menu and made good recommendations. My wife had her usual Dungie crab and shrimp boil with sausage. It had a fair amount of kick, especially the sausage. Would love to be able to get some at the market. I tried their gumbo, then their seafood pasta. The gumbo was wonderful, even had pieces of okra in it (call me weird, but I LIKE okra), and was very savory and filling. The seafood pasta was also good, with clams, mussels and shrimp in marinara, but could have used a pinch more salt in the pasta water and maybe a minute less boiling time. All-in-all, a very good dinner at a fair price. I'm already looking forward to a future visit.

We…read moretried to book ahead of time because we know things fill up during the holidays as well as it being a weekend. Unfortunately we got our days mixed up and our reservation was the following day. However the hostess told us it was not an issue and still seated us right away moving our booking to the correct day. The food came out in a timely manner and our server was very helpful as well. I ordered the seafood lasagna and it was very flavorful. Personally if I were to come back, I'd order another dish that was more filling. The server raved about how good it was and she was correct. It did have a lot of flavor to it. However it lacked seafood in the shells. At some points, I felt as though I was only eating shells and sauce with tomatoes unfortunately. Upon finishing our meal, unfortunately my father became ill after sipping water and going down the wrong pipe. We were so embarrassed seeing as though we were sitting in the middle of everyone dining. However the staff were so kind resulting us that it wasn't the first and dropping everything they were doing to tend to us with wet napkins and checking on my father. While we were deeply embarrassed, it really meant a lot to us that you all made us your priority in that moment and I greatly appreciate you alls service!

As for the food, it was honestly pretty underwhelming considering how hyped this place is. The crab dip was okay, nothing memorable. The steak and lobster was disappointing- the lobster had that soft texture that overcooked or not-so-fresh crawfish can have. The baked shrimp wasn't bad, but definitely not something I'd order again. Strawberry shortcake was decent enough. Ironically, the bread basket ended up being my favorite part of the meal-absolutely delicious. The service, however, was genuinely warm and hospitable. It was a bit slow, but the staff was kind, friendly, and personable enough that it made up for it. That was honestly the highlight of the experience. Was I excited to try this place because of all the hype? Absolutely. Would I personally recommend it? Probably not.
