If you haven't experienced authentic Asian food in its native country, you'll probably think the food is pretty good. If you're trying to scratch the itch for food you experienced on your travels, you'll be extremely disappointed. Super excited to taste some of our favorites from Taiwan, we ordered a bunch of food including the roasted duck, some dim sum, lo mein, and a "Taiwan style" meat dish. The duck was low quality and fatty, the dumplings and Bao buns were falling apart and had very little flavor, and the "Taiwan style" dish was just deep fried cartilage and bones - was not expecting that. The only acceptable food was the beef lo mein and pork xiaolongbao. We ended up tossing the duck and Taiwan style in the trash. We might go back to try again when everything is back to normal after COVID, but definitely won't do take out again. Disclaimer: Food was ordered during non peak hours and was takeout during COVID. I've never been to dimsum so I don't have much to compare it to but the line for this place is always out the door. That's always a good sign. We waited an hour and used their waiting app to keep good track of our wait times. If you're not familiar with dimsum, I would recommend getting familiar before going or else you'll get lots of stuff you don't want or won't eat. You do not simply order off a menu from your designated server, eat and pay. Instead, each server comes around with a cart of different food that they then stamp on your dining "passport" of sorts and move to the next table. The dining passport becomes your bill which you pay at the front. The servers WILL for sure try to get you to buy things, even if you don't want them, saying they're " yummy" or " very good" or "just try". If you're up for trying whatever, this will work for you. If not, you'll have to have a firm hand at saying no. I mean, they have like, lots of really interesting things here - fish guts, fish, various gelatins and buns and a whole host of traditional foods. I am not super comfortable with this type of dining set up and it was hard to feel like the food was fresh since there is layers of it being carted around the restaurant. The food we did have was good but nothing to really signify the hour wait we had, in my opinion. So I was super bummed to find out when we got to Star Kitchen that dim sum is only served earlier in the day. But that's what I get for not doing great research on the fly when the first place my husband and I were planning to go to ended up being closed. Thankfully, Star Kitchen has a GIANT menu with tons of other great food options. My husband and I shared the French style fillet steak and chef's special fried rice. The steak was on top of a bed of onions (not my fav). But the combo of the steak and onion was spot on. The steak was perfectly tender and I loved whatever type of marinade/sauce they used. The portion was a little small in comparison to all the other plates I saw and our fried rice. The fried rice was one of the best I've had. And I loved that it had a little pop of sweet from raisins. As a Cantonese person, my experience here was a nightmare. If you've gotten the chance to experience Chinese food in the Chinatowns in major cities in the US like San Francisco or NYC, you'll understand my review. Don't bother coming here. For those who haven't gotten the chance to experience good quality Chinese food at the Chinatowns like NYC and San Francisco, you still have time! I think it's safe to say that nothing we ordered was fresh. We ordered Chinese BBQ pork, Har Gao, Shiu Mai, and Wonton Noodle Soup. The biggest sign was the Har Gao. When I went to pick it up, the wrapper stuck and ripped open exposing the shrimp filling. Already off to a terrible experience. Both the filling of the Har Gao, Wontons, and Shiu Mai weren't dry and a bit rough, which means they're not fresh and have been frozen for some time. Freshly made ones have more of a smooth and moist texture. The Char Siu was probably the most alarming thing. This dish usually is one of the first things to be brought out to you because IF made fresh it should be hanging on the skewer. All they had to do is cut it once the order is in and serve. We ended up getting it last which could only mean one thing! It's not made fresh AND the meat was refrigerated. How do I know? They definitely steamed the BBQ pork, which is a no-no because that completely steams out all the flavor of the meat! To make matters worse the sauce that's suppose to be drizzled over the BBQ pork is suppose to be a sweet soy sauce base, but instead they drizzled honey all over it and the sauce is pure honey! Since the meat was refrigerated prior and had been steamed, it got dry and tough really quick. I shouldn't have ordered it since I didn't see all the different meats hanging under a heating lamp. The parking lot is always full. It's not big enough and there's always a bit of wait if you have a large party. It's a bit concerning that this "Hong Kong" spot has over 1k reviews with 4/5 stars. I could only think of one reason why. It's probably because this is one of the few if not the ONLY Cantonese Chinese Restaurant. From what I've seen, not a large population of Chinese people who immigrated here who can differentiate good/bad Chinese food. If you live in Denver and are desperate for some Cantonese food, I get why you wouldn't mind this place, but for those of you who have eaten authentic Chinese food, it's probably better for you to eat non-Cantonese food in Denver. LOOOOOOVE THIS PLACE! The dimsum is unreal, the prices are affordable, and there is a guaranteed food coma and or/food baby if you order correctly. The one thing you need to be aware of is the wait. Like the other reviews mention, you will have to wait quite some time depending on what day and white time you arrive. Sundays are definitely busier than Saturdays, and the earlier you go the better. The staff does the best they can to turn tables, but the place is very busy. Prepare yourself for a 30/40 minute wait, but trust me, it will be worth it. Once you are seated, the food carts come around quickly. Favorite things to order: cheung fun (steamed rice noodle rolls with shrimp), char sui bao (baked pork bun), shu mai (steamed pork dumpling), and har gow (shrimp dumplings). All of these items are absolutely delicious. I would recommend also branching out and trying an item or two that you normally wouldn't. We couldn't get in the door today (Sunday) so did carry out-- which is not the way we'll go next time (dim sum carts are part of the fun of eating this type of meal!). I'm glad we did because we were seated right away and when we left there was 6+ groups waiting outside to get a table. The salt and pepper shrimp is to die for. This is a must order if you're getting dimsum here especially if you like to eat the tails and shells like I do! I also highly recommend the pork shiu mai! I didn't love the shrimp and bbq pork rice rolls...the sauce is usually sweet for these dishes which I love...but the sauce tasted like low sodium soy sauce. This place is going down, fast. The servers are inattentive and rude. The food tastes old and spoiled. It used to be a nice place for a meal, but they've reduced their portions and raised the prices. The veggies we got yesterday, were yellow and wilted. The brisket and daikon dishes tasted spoiled. The servers were really rude. I love coming here for dim sum lunch. It's so much fun and they have so much to choose from. Be careful that you don't order a ton of stuff from the first cart or two that comes by; sometimes the better stuff comes by when you're too full to eat anything more! This restaurant is huge, but depending on the day or time you come for dim sum, you may have a wait (Fridays and weekends are super busy). NOTE: When you arrive, sign in at the kiosk in the entryway to get on the waitlist. Me and The Hubs have had a lot of fun trying new things here. Most items on the carts are fairly easy to identify, but there are some things that I'm clueless about. Each time, we like to choose at least one dish we can't identify. So far we haven't been disappointed! I think dim sum is served from 10:30 AM to 2:30 or 3:00 PM (closed Wednesdays). They have a menu to order from if you're not in the mood for dim sum. PS - Your tab can add up really fast if you don't pay attention to what you're doing. Most of the items seem to be in the $6-9 range, but they have some that are $12 or more. For the two of us, we usually spend about $60 for lunch, but one time it was closer to $100 (we are big eaters, so take that into account). FWIW, the $100 time I think we had three or four of the premium priced items in addition to some lower priced ones. I have been here in the past and it was good but today guaranteed I will not be back. 1) when we came in 3 carts surrounded the table at once and started putting things on the table. I would tell them no, but they left it and stamped our card for it. By the time we walked off we had 10 plates on our table and we had only asked for 5 of them. 2)the stuff we had was cold, we did come with 1 left before lunch closed but it seemed like we were just getting leftovers. 3) after the first 3 carts bombarded us, no one else came by. My husband was looking forward to the vegetable dishes but none came by. 4) my husband went back up with two of the dishes that we didn't even want to try and the employee took them (after they had been on our table for 10 mins) and put them on someone else's table. That has to be a health code violation. 5) even though my husband asked for them to remove the two dishes he took back, we were charged for 11 dishes. $64 for cold, soggy food and bad service!!! The soup dimsum was tasty. Otherwise, not impressed at at all. It took an hour just to get our food ordered. I ordered the shrimp in lobster sauce, big mistake. It was a large bowl of egg drop soup with shrimp in it. I sent it back because it wasn't at all what I expected or wanted. I don't mind egg drop soup but not as an a main dish. Plus, if I had known they were only going to offer 20% off I wouldn't have ordered anything else to eat. Since I only had one bite of the dish, I paid 20 bucks for pot stickers that were just ok. If they had removed the uneaten dish from my bill, as restaurants usually do, this review would have been more stars and I would considering driving across town to try them again. Several people recommended Star Kitchen to me as one of the best dim sum places in the area, and I was definitely pleased. I came here for lunch on the weekend, and was prepared for a long wait. Though we had to wait 20-30 minutes, the line moved fast, and the staff seemed pretty good about clearing tables quickly to make room for the next parties. To speed up the wait, they also asked us if we would mind sharing a table with another group. The tables were pretty big, so we didn't mind. While there is a separate menu to order entree items from, we just went straight for the dim sum. I was impressed by the variety of dim sum they served. We also didn't have to wait long for the ladies with the food carts to stop by our table, so we got our food quickly. I will say that I didn't think the quality was the best. For example, the soup dumplings didn't really hold, and the top and bottom halves were separated so the broth had leaked into the foil cups. Having said that, everything we tried was tasty. Being a Chinese native and living in LA for 15 years, I have to say Star Kitchen didn't disappoint! The dim sum is as pretty authentic close to what you get in LA. They might lack a few varieties but they certainly do well with what they have on the menu. We arrived for lunch on a Tuesday just after 11 and there's already a line formed. Now that's a good sign that we're waiting for something super delicious and the constant sightings of steaming hot carts carrying dim sum just heightened our anticipation! We were seated after about 10 min wait which wasn't bad at all. Carts were gathered around our table offering all sorts of food. We couldn't help but to take as many as we like. The seafood dumplings were amazing so we're the short ribs and smoked duck! The chow mein was a bit oily and bland. They didn't give us the mustard and hot sauce like the restaurants in LA, which in my opinion is a big miss. Nevertheless, we enjoyed all the food along with hot tea. Service was prompt and courteous which is standard for Chinese restaurants. We were a bit surprised by our bill. I guess we need to ask for the price before piling up our table with baskets of dim sum. The prices are a bit high for a dim sum lunch but you do get quiet the variety. Good food but horrible service. This place is very busy especially during lunch time. servers who work there (who goes around with dim sum carts) don't speak English. If you ask in English, they could totally ignore you and move on to another table. That's what they did when I asked what kind of dim sum it was since I didn't understand what they said in Chinese. Not only one but all of the other servers just ignored me and walked away with carts when I spoke to them in English until I got pissed and literally told them how rude they were. Don't let the western name throw you, this is one of the closest spots to true dim sum in Denver besides hopping on a one-way flight to LA. The food is super yummy, especially the steamed, hot small plates. (Now, disclaimer, if you've never been too dim sum, it's family style with a cart that floats around. So try three small plates per person. Sharing is half the fun.) I'd recommend the shrimp dumplings, he fen - a shrimp noodle with fresh sweet soy sauce), shu mai (Chinese pork meatballs), and mango pudding. Egg tarts are always a win as well! On busy days, the cart with open food might get a bit chilled - still delicious, but buyer beware if that's not your cup of tea. Hot dishes work best. They actually have a delightful curry fish meatball that was really unique. Also, make sure to order tea! After heavy dim sum, nothing better than a spot of hot tea. This is the best dim sum in town hands down. Nowhere else comes close and yes, I gave a chance to what looks like (rating-wise) a close competitor. Nah, this is the only place to go if you want to be satisfied dim sum-wise. Employees are nicer here and the restaurant is much cleaner. The dim sum is better than many I've had in LA with some delicious dishes I haven't seen elsewhere as well. There is always a wait, less of a wait if you come later. But an hour is not unusual. It's a carts operation. Sometimes it can be tricky to get all the dishes you want quickly. Sometimes you miss out on something completely. The pork shumai is better than average here, one of the best I've had, a bit larger with lots of rich filling. The tripe with daikon radish is another favorite. The one here is light in saucy flavor, but we love the taste still, especially of the ginger and brown sugar and star anise, and chewy texture. I like the braised chicken feet here a lot...it took me four times to try this dish to fall in love with it. It is also sweet and full of umami flavor. The small fried fish, smelt, I also highly recommend. Even people who don't really like fish can enjoy them because they're very crispy and salty with garlic and jalapenos. You also can order duck, blood, chow mein, pork buns, char sui, gai lan, black bean clams, snails, salt and pepper calamari, scallop dumpling, egg tart, pineapple bun, steamed sponge cake, and many more. The one dish I've found rather dissapinting is the thousand year old egg congee. We have been patronizing Star Kitchen for almost 15-20 years. Sorry to say that it is Not the same as the old Star Kitchen pre Covid days. The dim sum is at best mediocre and twice the price for servings and items that keep getting smaller. Like Char Siu Bao are less than 1/2 the size it used to be at twice the price. Seems like they have lost their dim sum cooks and their wait staff has definitely had a huge turnover. Many wait staff that we have become friends with are no longer there. Have noticed this happening over the last year or two. They have definitely upgraded their ambiance, nothing was wrong with the old decorations, maybe a newer owner now? I had the Kung Pao beef, it was average The waiter recommended a spicy chicken dish , but we returned it after the first bite It was incredibly salty and the meat was not chicken, not sure what it was. The most legit Chinese food in Denver. So far... Tried some dim sum. It was decent. I wouldn't recommend just based on their dim sum but there were some winners...anything with shrimp in it. Basically. We also tried some items from their a la carte menu as well. Deep Friend Flounder - must try. Crispy to the 9s and a sauce you can pour over rice and eat on its own. Chinese Broccoli w/ garlic - we got hosed for the price on this but the flavor profile was spot on. In most Chinese food restaurants I've dine it, the broccoli is always in whole stalks.
