The batter they used bursts of flavor that you just want to keep on eating more. It's accompanied by cubes of watermelon and pineapple. So refreshing. Mango fish appetizer - so lightly breaded and flaky fish on the inside. We devoured that as well. Longanissa mussels - that was really delicious as well. I wouldn't have expected this combination but it worked. The broth is filled with the pork longanissa so it's very flavorful. Noi's pork - the pork was very tender. It's basically make your own lettuce wrap. Delicious as well. Flan for dessert. Light, creamy, and the candied sugar on top adds crunchiness. I just wish that the coffee flavor is intense. Quite an experience. I came with my bf for date night. Stepping into their space is like removing yourself from Pasadena. I was disappointed that my Nimm's Cup was very heavy with carrot juice - I wanted it to be lighter with the ginger beer. My bf's drinks were better. He started with the Kamata Club Blues which was very interesting and then the Hello from Hanoi which wasn't what he wanted it to be but was still tasty. For food, we got the * Night Market Shichimi Tofu - a unique dish with tender crusted tofu bites and watermelon and pineapple cubes. I just wished the fruit were more ripe. This is one of our new favorite restaurants! The food is wonderful and the staff is friendly and helpful. When we went for dinner on a Sunday night, they had a magician that came by the table and did card tricks. It was a fun diversion! The cocktails are creative and tasty. But, the main show is the food! We've tried a variety of dishes and never been disappointed! My personal favs are the Royal Crown Fried Rice, Mango Fish, Lime Steamed Chilean Sea Bass and the Bakka salmon. I will say I been dying to try this place for awhile! I'm currently on lent so I wasn't able to eat the dish without some modifications . With that being said overall a great experience. We had to ask for extra rice but the amount they gave us was perfect and didn't charge extra for it. They did say this was family style. The short ribs were to die for but I wish it was a bigger serving. (But I just eat that much lol) the grilled lamb chops were yummy but we were told it was supposed to be medium rare and it came well done. We told Cameron and he was so great about getting us a second batch. Sadly it was still well done; however, the flavor was there and it was still shockingly tender! I think the chops are just too small to be cooked mid rare so just don't expect that. But still recommend! Star Leaf is an elegant restaurant serving creative Southeast Asian-inspired dishes with multiple branches in Asia and their first US location in Pasadena. We started with the Spicy Tom Yum Soup, a sour and spicy shrimp broth with prawns, mussels, mushrooms, lemongrass, kaffir lime, and galangal; the Spicy Papaya Salad, made of shredded green papaya, mango, and cherry tomatoes in fish sauce, all topped with crushed peanuts; the Crying Tiger Salad, made of greens, toasted wild rice, tomato, and shredded manchego cheese, served with a juicy sliced crying tiger steak; and the Siam Beach Club Egg Roll, thin crispy rolls stuffed with blended shrimp, water chestnut, and lemongrass, served with a chili mango dip on the side. All of the starters were delicious, but even better were the entrees on the menu! I came here for my surprise baby shower dinner around 32 weeks pregnant, and unfortunately, it wasn't the experience I hoped for. We were seated in a booth on the opposite end of the restaurant from the bathrooms. Not a deal breaker for most, but being very pregnant and needing to walk across the entire place every 15-20 minutes made it uncomfortable. Our server started off nice but quickly became annoyed with my party, especially when they were confused about the shared plate style of ordering. One of my family members ordered a shrimp dish that looked nothing like the picture on the menu, and when she asked about it, the waiter's attitude noticeably shifted for the worse. As for the food--hit or miss. I ordered the 12HR BRAISED ANGUS SHORT RIBS, which looked beautiful but were dry and completely lacking flavor. For one of the most expensive items on the menu, I expected a lot more. On a better note, the MAMASAN'S SHRIMP CAKE SKEWERS were delicious, and the SAIGON SUMMER RICE PAPER ROLLS made a great appetizer. What really ruined the experience was at the end. I got up to use the restroom one last time, and when I returned, the lights in our section were suddenly turned off. It was so sudden and dark it actually startled me. There was still another large party dining nearby, and their lights were still on, so it felt targeted and passive-aggressive, like they were trying to shove us out. It was unnecessary and rude. We were already getting ready to leave so it was very confusing to say the least. Also, there's a cake-cutting fee we weren't told about in advance. If we had known we'd be charged just for using their plates, we would've made sure they at least served it for us instead of us doing it ourselves. Overall, this place left a bad taste in my mouth--literally and figuratively. I won't be coming back, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. read more
