And to think - my husband and I were going to cancel our reservation because of a food influencer that could not have been more wrong about their assessment of this restaurant! The food was tasty and not overly salty as previously mentioned by others. The portions were generous, more than enough for a party of four. The service was excellent! Thank you to Conner and his team that served us during our meal. The price is affordable! We've been to other places that have charged more for less. A good option for large groups, they have plenty of space! My main goal for this review is to encourage giving this place a try for anyone that is on the fence! I know when we were reading/watching reviews, it was mixed but we gave this place a try anyways and we enjoyed it! Hopefully folks are pleasantly surprised!
Saw this restaurant on several social Media websites so we decided to give it a try. We went there on a Saturday afternoon, around 4ish, before the dinner crowd. Got in right away without any wait. The menu was very interesting. Dishes are the best varieties from Southeast Asia flavors. We ordered the yellow chicken curry with choices or breads or rice and salted egg crispy shrimp. The shrimp dish came with about 8-9 shrimp and that was it. So veggie or rice or anything comes with it. The yellow chicken curry was meh. Nothing too excited about. For the price that you pay for each dish, it's not worth the money. The place is decorated tastefully and very relaxing atmosphere. They have a good size patio dining area as well.
Star Leaf came across my Resy search and ended up being a spot I try for my birthday. I went on a Saturday at around 2:00 pm as a walk-in. I was able to find metered parking on the street; not sure why but I didn't need to pay that day! Upon arriving, we were fortunate that there was no wait time and got seated right away. Their menu was quite extensive so we took some time to browse before we ordered. They had a main menu and also a special menu. We pointed out some allergies to the staff and he helped us work around it. The orders came out quickly and he checked in on us frequently to see if we were okay. Great service! Bakka Wild Salmon - This salmon had a lot of things going on for it, in a good way! The combination of flavors felt very refreshing, especially on a hot day. The lime and basil played a big part there. Crispy Short Rib with Lime - Even initially before coming here, this was the dish that caught our attention. I will admit the portion size was a bit smaller than I expected and was even skeptical when it came out. However, without a doubt, this was the highlight of the visit. As someone that loves savory foods, this really hit the spot. The burst of flavors settles in right away. Truffle Wok Seared Noodles - We wanted to pick this noodle dish as a balance to the protein dishes. It did its job but it tasted okay. Not something that stood out. Slow-Drip Vietnam Coffee Flan - I liked the caramel that was layered on the flan, it was crunchy and added a nice texture. It was a nice presentation but tasted okay. Thai Tea - This was my personal drink. It was a standard Thai tea but came with ice cream on top. It was not too sweet but didn't stand out compared to other items. Strawberry Pandan Lemonade - This was my girlfriend's drink. I had a small sip here but found it was refreshing and not too sweet. However, I didn't really get any pandan flavor, mainly strawberry. When it all comes together, it was a good experience. The interior of the story is more dimly lit and felt like a romantic night dinner, despite being the middle of the day. The dishes had a balance of standard and hidden gems. Everything was more than sufficient for two people to share. Service was great and very attentive. Will come back for the Crispy Short Ribs! American Express is accepted here.
I have been to this restaurant before when it was Roy's Hawaiian restaurant. I am glad Star Leaf has kept that tropical vibe inside. A friend and I met here for happy hour prior to a performance at Pasadena Playhouse. It couldn't be more perfect since it is 1 to 2 blocks away and you only have to park once. You also do not have to rush. They have happy hour until 6 PM and another one at 8 PM. The options for drinks and food, as well as the prices are very appealing, but the quality and taste really make it. The food is more of a Thai fusion with strong Thai flavors. The bar bites are meant to be small, but we ordered about four items that completely filled us up as dinner. Standouts for me, worthy tiger, prawn, ceviche, and the crispy Seabass with mangoes, mango sauce, and papaya salad. All the food has a kick, but it is not overly spicy. When I walked into the bar, I saw some house made bitters and fresh ingredients everywhere so I knew the drinks would be awesome. The Peacock margarita has passionfruit and a touch of Mezcal in it. The lychee margarita is not too sweet and so well balanced. Our mixologist, Sebastian was delightful and provided incredible service. I could go back for all these reasons and definitely will do so
My family and I have been here multiple times and have enjoyed ourselves every time. The Pork Collar was our favorite - the mix of flavors was honestly so good! All of the dishes were solid from the fried rice (which was much larger than expected), to the seasonable veggies. The ambiance is great - we saw larger groups celebrating birthdays and folks on dates. I do think they need to staff more waiters. We saw one waiter handling all the orders with support from a bus boy. She was pretty busy and handling the tables well, but didn't have much time to check in on us, refill waters, etc. Tip: there is validated 1 hour parking at 44 Madison
Came here with my family to celebrate my Dad's birthday. We had a party of 4 which was perfect for the family style portions of food. The inside of the restaurant was elegant and comfortable. The decor reminded me of a tropical palace. There is plenty of seating and tables which could definitely accommodate a larger party. The staff was friendly and welcoming. Shoutout to our server Connor for his hospitality and good vibes. Now on to the meal. The food came out in a timely manner. Each dish, in our opinion was seasoned well and flavorful. The highlight for me was the Thai Royal Curry with soft shell crab. I would definitely order this again, with some white rice. The Royal crown fried rice, which I've seen a lot of people get, was ok/good, but beautifully presented. This restaurant is a great place to celebrate a special evening, especially if you're in the mood for Asian cuisine.
This place has easily become one of my favorite Thai restaurants in the area. Whether it's celebrating a birthday or just going out for a date night, this place does not disappoint. Definitely recommend trying their 12 hour Braised Angus Short Ribs, the Golden Salted Egg Yolk Prawns, and the Spicy Thai Som Tum Mango Salad. SO DELICIOUS! Staff are always very friendly and personable!
Yall better treat your staff well- The only reason why I'm leaving a positive review is for Connor. The happy hour menu online is outdated, the new hh menu is significantly smaller. We ordered their SINGAPOREAN WINGS(5PCS) and when it arrived, we only got three pieces. I asked them to cross verify the menu and with the kitchen. They're claiming since the wings were bigger than usual, they only gave me 3... We went back and forth and the kitchen still stood their ground. You can't advertise 5 wings and give me 3. Buy smaller wings if you're cheap. Connor made it right by asking them to make the additional wings we were promised at the end of our meal. The apps were tasty- their royal fried rice is nothing special. I'd come back for happy hour in Connor's section but nothing else.
This place is by far one of the best places to eat in Pasadena. We were lucky to be seated in the Athena section again. She also remembered the table. She always gives the best selections for the table. She is beyond kind, and as I said before, always asks to sit in her section. She is a true joy at the table. We, of course, ordered all the same favorites in the photos and were able to try the desserts too. The ambiance is very fun and uplifting. I will be back again soon. So glad this location is thriving and here for everyone to try.
Great vibes and ambiance. We came during Happy Hour from 3 pm- 6 pm and got the chance to try most of the dishes. We sat at the bar for Happy Hour and the bartenders customer service was fantastic. Very chill and we were loving the decorations. The food was delicious and did not disappoint. We ordered the Singaporean Chicken wings, 2 short rib tacos, Shrimp Ceviche, Shrimp cakes and Crispy Chilean Sea Bass. I loved all the dishes my 2 faves were the Crispy Chilean Sea Bass and Short Rib Tacos, they both come with really good dips on the side. I will say they often change their Happy Hour items. We will come back again soon! Can't wait to try the other dishes.
My daughter took me out to start leave for Mother's Day. We had the Mother's Day six course special menu. Luckily we were able to get a table without reservations. The staff was super friendly and helpful to keep asking how we wear and if we like the food also the ambience it's so welcoming and pretty. I'm glad that we would have this special so we could try a lot of their foods.. my favorite was the line steam Chilean sea bass. The lychee martini was good and strong. Check it out .
Came here last night for a birthday + anniversary dinner. We ordered: Thai som tum mango salad - delicious! I think at a traditional Thai restaurant this would be on the light spicy side so if you're used to having this be spicier, I'd ask. But the ingredients are fresh and it's a well prepared dish. Saigon summer rice paper rolls - good for vegetarians and a nice, light way to start the meal Bakka salmon - the sashimi + mint + garlic trio was lovely and made every bite so bright. My family was practically drinking the sauce. Golden salted egg yolk prawns - my biggest disappointment. If you like salted egg yolk chips, you'll probably love these. I assumed it would crispier, but it wasn't. Spicy string beans - wasn't spicy at all, but still very enjoyed by the table. Thai royal curry with lobster - came with baguette slices to soak up the sauce. The red lobster tail is for show as the meat is right next to the shell. Someone in our group isn't a huge fan of seafood, but he actually ended up eating some lobster because he found the texture to be perfect and the curry to be a great compliment. Again my family was basically drinking the curry by the end. Steamed Chilean sea bass - wasn't super popular at our table. Despite the plate being hot, the fish felt almost a little chilled? Tropical panna cotta - great for a light dessert Coffee flan - best way to end a meal here. It is a sweet dessert, but coffee flavor hells balance it out. Strawberry pandan lemonade - didn't taste any pandan. Was very sweet. My family loves spicy food so we had to ask for extra hot sauce on the side. Our server was amazing and got us chili oil using Thai chilies and house made Sriracha to help turn up the heat on some of the dishes. The menu is extensive so there's something for everyone. Decor was beautiful as well and it's a spacious restaurant. The price point is a little high, but it's fancy restaurant so I get it. For a table of 5 and 2 mocktails it came out to be roughly $50 per person without any left overs (we were hungry that night!). Lots of groups celebrating birthdays so I'd say this place is good for a small splurge.
The service was great, super nice and clean inside. The restrooms were clean and fancy looking - I would approve to go #2 there. However, the flushing isn't the greatest. It seemed really weak. The royal fried rice is too much and I couldn't enjoy it. Good flavor but too many fish balls. It was popping in my mouth in every bite. Would not get it again. The 12hr short ribs were tender. Good flavor and enough for 2 people.

The ambiance and decor is incredible. It's very welcoming and chic at the same time. From the beginning to end, everyone is so nice and attentive. Cameron is very nice to explains and suggests all their signature dishes to us. Everything he recommended is amazing. We ordered lunch sets and some other dishes. The portion of the lunch is huge. Everybody I seen who ordered the lunch set basically has leftover. We ordered two lunch sets: Shrimp skewer+ Thai royal curry (rice or baguettes) Summer roll + Royal crown fried rice (Cameron was so nice to tell us it's actually from one of the movie in the 90s) Other dishes: Egg rolls Thai tea with coconut ice cream Mango sticky rice Will definitely be back and try the other dishes! read more

I came here around 4:30pm on a Sunday afternoon, we were seated immediately. We had a stroller and they were very accommodating for our 10 month old. Service: Cameron was our server. He gave great recommendations and attentive service. Every time I look around, he immediately sees me, and comes over to assist us. Refills water, clears away plates without having to ask him. Parking: Very easy to find parking. They have structure parking next to the restaurant on 44 N Madison Ave. They validate for an hour. On Sunday it's a $5 flat fee. They also have 1 hour free street parking surrounding the restaurant. Food: Papaya Salad: super crisp and flavorful. This one is my husband's favorite. It stay crisp even after we took it home and have it for next day. We adjusted the spice level on this dish, as it come pretty spicy. It contains fish sauce, ground shrimp, peanuts, and other goodness. Royal Crown Fried Rice: this dish is based on the fried rice in the HK movie God of Cookery by Steven Chow. One of my favorite movies growing up! Their spin is to top it with orange tobiko. I was told that it taste best when the tobiko is tossed in with the fried rice, and eat it before it gets cold. Because it will get fishy if it gets cold. This fried rice is hands down one of the best fried rice I've ever had. You can taste the gou qi (鍋氣), meaning the flavor that comes from properly handling the fire from the wok. Only skilled wok chef can produce such flavor for fried rice. The scallops and the shrimp inside were properly cooked as well. Definitely my top 1, and must eat while it's hot! Night Market Shichimi Tofu: Crispy fried deliciousness. Flavorful crispy exterior with a silky soft tofu inside. Great appetizer to share. It doesn't stay crispy for long, definitely needs to eat it while it's hot as well. Spicy Tom Yum Soup: Although it said it is spicy, the spicy level is more of a taste than spicy, which fit my taste bud. I love the giant tiger prawn and the green lip mussel that it came with, super flavorful and cooked just right. This soup is so comforting, it's great for any cold day, or when you are feeling under the weather. The servers had a story that said tom yum soup cured a princess. If you order the large portion, they even cook it table side for you. Mango Sticky Rice: My husband is a mango sticky rice lover. This plate is definitely picture perfect with the different color combinations. Given that mango is not in season, this mango was not overly tart. The flavor of the sticky rice is dragon fruit (pink), butterfly pea flower (blue), and plain (white). The server pours the coconut milk over the sticky rice for you after you snap a picture. Overall: this restaurant offers a lot of table side service option, a lot like fine dining, but without the stuff fine dining vibe. Definitely our new favorite Southeast Asian food restaurant go to. read more

Food was good but the service was a completely joke, can't believe this place is located in the heart area of pasadena. I was here tonight with friends and families for birthday dinner. When we about to check out and leave, one of the servants right next to us tipped over a full jug of water, the water were splashed everywhere: on my sister's face, my in law's and my clothes and bags. And not only he didn't apologize and offer clean up, all he said was "oh, it's just water" and WALK AWAY (yes, he ordered some junior staff cleaning up the mess on the ground but not help the customer and just completely walked away!) NOT EVEN OFFERING 1 SHEET OF NAPKIN TO US. Funny thing is, when we complaint to the manager about 10 mins later, then he suddenly showed up and start apologizing saying he doesn't mean to. Is this some kind of service you expected in a decent restaurant in downtown pasadena? I think Burger King has better trained staff and service TBH. Paired with cherry tomatoes, they're a must-try for meat lovers! 2 Small Seafood Tom Yum Soup (Serves 2) If your group has four or more people, order the large size. The staff will prepare the soup tableside, explaining the process as they go--enhancing the dining experience. The soup includes shrimp, mussels, and mushrooms. 3 Royal Crown Fried Rice Topped with fish roe and loaded with seafood like shrimp and squid, this fried rice is generously portioned and packed with delicious wok-fried aroma. A must-order for every table! 4 Lobster Tail Curry with Crispy Toast The crispy toast is a standout! I was so hooked I ordered three servings. It's fragrant, crunchy, and perfect for dipping into the rich, flavorful curry. You can choose lobster tail, beef, chicken, or shrimp for the curry. 5 Thai Tea Not overly sweet, just the right balance. Very cozy, very gatsby-esque aesthetic and atmosphere. Felt like a family restaurant at first until people started ordering shots and then girls came out with said drinks chanting like a club. Run! Don't walk!! They are offering lunch special for $25 Monday to Friday!! Get there before the special is over!?came here today for lunch and it was fabulous! What a bargain ! Got my favorite Royal curry with soft shield crab and the best Vietnamese spring roll with lemon grass.. perfectly crunchy on the inside and succulent shrimp on the inside!!Beautiful ambience as always! A place where nothing is spared and each detail has a purpose. The interiors are south east Asian chic with European influences here and there (including the beautiful restroom which by the way smells so amazing). Everything seems to be carefully curated and the fusion style dishes were delightfully scrumptious. The Cocktails: RAFFLES Singapore Sling -- this drink is rare in SoCal and because I've been missing Singapore, I decided to give it a try. One sip and bam! Their version got me hooked. No scrimping on the alcohol and fresh fruit all around. Lychee Martini - You can totally taste the lychee. This drink is as gorgeous as it is a killer. Talking about it now is making me want one again. The Grub: Mamasan's shrimp cake skewers -- thoughtfully served in green onion skewers. It does not look much but it is every bit as delightful with the Crunchy breading outer layer and chewy shrimp inside. The dip was perfection and this is truly best eaten with the Pineapple chunks it was served with. Saigon Summer Rice Paper Rolls -- Fresh and carefully prepared. The mango dip was divine and it all blends so well altogether. I can finish an entire plate of this. It's light and refreshingly rich in flavors. Night Market Shichimi Tofu -- Delish!! Served with what appears to be fried watermelon and avocado. Do have each bite with another fruit and the melody it creates in your mouth will delight you to your core. Bakka Wild Salmon In Thai Vinaigrette -- Perhaps my favorite dish tonight. Eye popping good and puts the F in FRESH. It was spicy for me but that didn't stop me from having more than a couple. Again, must be enjoyed with all its accompanying garnish. Siam Beach Club Egg Rolls -- Capital A (and all caps) for AMAZING. Crunchy, fresh goodness. Sauce to-die-for. Spicy Tom Yum Soup - Heavenly! Their version left quite an impression on us and the manner in which it was served was interesting and truly engaging. Served fresh and cooked in front of our table no less with storytelling to boot. My other favorite dish from our visit. Madame Noi's Pork Collar -- grilled to perfection and absolutely scrumptious! Roll em up altogether and hello, you're on cloud nine! Royal Crown Fried Rice -- Yummy albeit a bit salty because of all the seafood, nonetheless, a standout among all fried rices I've had in this lifetime. Longganisa Mussels -- My least favorite as it was too salty for my taste even with the freshly baked Baguette that came with it. Nonetheless it was a brave take on the longganisa which I grew up eating. It was quite an experience trying it out with mussels in a soup. Spicy Malacca Sambal -- My friend thought it was too salty but it was perfectly seasoned for me so I suppose it's a toss between the two. Crunchy green beans cooked the right way. We were too full to have dessert but I suppose that saves for next time. The only annoying thing about our visit was how the bartender informed us that the kitchen has closed at 9 PM (without even alerting us before it has closed) so when our friends walked in at 9:05, we were panicking. We haven't been seated yet and the kitchen has closed! My friend spoke to a hostess and they accommodated us. She says the kitchen is still open. Thank heavens we haven't left yet. This kind of miscommunication can be avoided in the future. Other than that, the service was impeccable and the restaurant was ultra clean. I'm returning with my kids next time--I hope they're kid friendly too. read more

10 stars!!! This place is amazing! The food was so delicious and the service is phenomenal! We got the beef curry, shrimp cakes, salmon, pineapple rice, Vietnamese flan, and coconut cup. Everything was amazing with great flavor and spices. We were served by two amazing waitresses.. Marissa and Bridgette. They were super friendly and attentive. Everyone here is welcoming. We had a 6:30pm reservation and we celebrated our friends' birthday here. The restaurant was definitely busy during dinner. We weren't sure who our waiter was for a long time, because after 20 mins of looking at our menu no one came to greet us at all. Finally we stopped who we believed was the manager in a suit. He got our drinks order in, but have to admit the way this manager spoke to us was not friendly. It was like we were interrupting his busy schedule or something. He even ended his comment with "Badda Bing! Badda Boom! Coming right up!!" All 4 of us were cringing like, who talks like that at a restaurant? Another 10 mins later our waiter Cameron finally showed up and took our order. All our food came out soon after which we were glad because we were starving by then. The 4 of us shared: Royal Crown Fried Rice - this came out first before all the other appetizers. They definitely don't skim on the fish roe Crying Tiger Salad with add chicken - This looks and tastes like any salad, not very memorable Shichimi Tofu - Best dish of the night! Silky tofu inside, light and crunchy outside. Comes with sweet and spicy sauce which I didn't care for only because I cannot eat spicy Tropical Mango Fish - This came with some VERY spicy habanero sauce which I cannot eat. Without the sauce, the fish was like frozen fish fillet from Costco Shrimp Cake Skewers - This reminds me of the fried shrimp/crab dish in Cantonese restaurant where you dip in mayo. Malay Captain's Curry - Very spicy Yellow curry which unfortunately I cannot eat. Comes with rice and baguette for dipping Pork Collar - comes with veggies and lettuce wrap, however the pork was a bit fatty Baby Brinjak Eggplant - a tasty vegetarian dish Overall I like the Royal Crown Fried Rice, the Shichimi Tofu, and the eggplant. All the dishes are very presentable and IG worthy. The decor is also immaculate here and upgrade to what it used to be Roy's. With Yelp Check-in, they comp us 2 Thai Ice Tea, and gave our friends 2 Vietnam Coffee flan for their birthdays which we really appreciated. The food was wonderful! We started off with the shrimp skewers, And then ordered the A5 Wagyu and lamb and let me tell you... the Wagyu did not disappoint It was literally melting in your mouth buttery deliciousness! Would absolutely order again. And then we got the ice cream for dessert, which had a wonderful presentation. We wanted the mango sticky rice, but unfortunately it wasn't available that day, or that time at night. Our server was great. He had a great attitude. He was very helpful. Our bartender was awesome too. The restaurant is beautifully decorated. It's definitely a fun spot for a date night, outing with your friends, Moms night out, or celebrating anything fun. Came here for Thanksgiving lunch, and everything was super tasty, but nothing mind-blowing. This ambiance of this restaurant feels like a super upscale Thai restaurant, with a bunch of friendly staff. We definitely over ordered for two people because we thought that portions would be small, but we were wrong! We ordered the Thai Royal Curry with Soft Shell Crab, and loved how the two pieces of crab were HUGE. Also appreciated the fact that the curry was perfectly seasoned and not too salty as the dish itself was already super heavy. The restaurant does provide complimentary rice and bread if you ask! Think the Pork Collar dish was one of our favorites, as pork was super tender and flavorful and loved how it came in a wrap-style with their papaya salad. Their pineapple fried rice was pretty typical to any other Thai restaurant. We also tried their seasonal Crispy Chilean Sea Bass w/ a lemongrass salad, which was just okay as it felt too heavy, since chilean sea bass is already such a fatty fish, that frying it made it too much. We thought the lemongrass salad would help cut the fattiness but the there was barely any salad and felt more like a garnish. What we tried ( *= fav): - *Saigon summer rice paper rolls (+ soft shell crab) - Siam beach club egg roll - Thai Royal Curry (+ lobster) - *Madame Noi's Pork Collar - *Pink Mekong dessert - Drinks (both good): Raffles Singapore Sling (red/pink drink) and Peacock Margarita (yellow drink) Currently in their soft opening but grand opening is on 5/20!! Delicious! The food was so flavorful. Highly recommend the Royal Fried Rice topped with roe. The flavor and texture was exquisite. The sauce on the sea bass was amazing and the two dishes paired really well together. Service was good, lighting was a little harsh and the table for 2 felt massively long. The coconut dessert was just okay, it lacked flavor for me even though the presentation was stunning. read more

Discovered this place through @Jules_cali. The vibe of the place is upscale, I would take my family and friends here to celebrate my bday, really gorgeous decor! Our server Justin was very attentive and knowledgeable-- made really great suggestions, all the girls loved him!! Every dish was absolutely incredible!! But here are a few of the favorites: the pink Mekong dessert ( must get! ), Royal Crown fried rice & Thai Royal curry w/ lobster. Will be back for these :) We also tried the grilled lamb chops, steamed sea bass, Siam beach club egg rolls and mango sticky rice... all so very wonderful! I went to star leaf 3 times and never failed for the food! The ambiance really good and comfortable. The food came a little bit slow but it's doesn't matter as long as the taste really good. Our server was very commucates very well. read more
