I made an offer to three dealerships on a Friday night. By Sunday afternoon I was the owner of a Mazda CX-5. The people at STAR are outstanding. I worked with Brian Kim. He's quite good at email-communication and texting, very responsive. He negotiated fairly. It was pleasant working with him; people often observe that salesmen are pushy. Brian is nothing like that. The finance man...I forgot his name! But, he is more than friendly. I asked for a lower interest rate and he gave me lower than what I requested. That blew my mind! He's from Canada and helps us to know that the reputation our neighbors from the north earned is deserved. One final thing. My wife is EXTREMELY picky and only wanted me to buy a Lexus SUV. Star Mazda's only benefit is their competitive pricing. Other than that they are as sketchy as you imagine a call dealership would be. We found a Mazda CX5 on their lot with low mileage and a fair price. We wanted to trade in our car and put down a significant down payment. We weren't able to agree on a trade-in value and so my wife and I left the lot without purchasing the car. Later that day they called and came up some on the trade-in. After researching other Mazda dealerships, we believed that the price they were offering was the best amongst all the Mazda dealerships. The next step was to negotiate financing for the remaining balance. My wife and I are very fortunate and we both have credit scores over 800. Since this wasn't a new car, we didn't have the option of 0% financing. They offered us a very high rate and wouldn't budge much. So we went to Capital One, which is our credit card company. We found a more favorable rate and actually negotiated some additional perks through our CC by going with them. Star Mazda said that they couldn't go any lower. Star Mazda is a preferred dealer with Capital One, so it should be an easy process. We called our salesperson at Star, told them the rate we negotiated through CO and said we wanted them as our lender. Get the paperwork together and we'll come in the next day to sign. They agreed and we were off. Next day we went into the dealership to sign our papers and take our car. Our salesperson was fine. He had been as helpful as a salesperson can be. While waiting Don McCurdy, the Finance Manager, we updated our insurance to reflect our purchase. During that process we were asked by our insurance who our lender would be. We chose Capital One and were presented with addresses to match our lender. We asked our salesperson to verify with Don the lender address. He told us the address that Don chose. Then we were ushered into Don's office to complete paperwork. This is when it got really interesting. We were there with our 10-week old baby. She's the reason we were upgrading to a larger car. She was in a stroller. Had already been there 45 minutes. She was getting a little fussy and Don asked if the baby was a girl or a boy. We said a girl and he said, "Oh yeah, girls are the fussy ones. I have three daughters." Which fine, not a big deal. Sort of a playful dad banter. Then he goes on to say that his daughter got married this past weekend. We congratulated him. He said, "I didn't go. She had wanted me to walk her down the aisle but she said she wanted her mother to walk as well, so I refused." Then he rants about his three daughters. Rants about how he used to have a female dog but now he has a male dog and it's so much better. Female dogs are terrible. He looked at our credit score and saw that my wife had a higher score than me and said that it was unusual for the women's to be higher because "women have more credit cards than men." My wife has an MBA in finance. She is very good with money. In fact, she's the reason I even have a reasonable score. Once I told him that, he asked what my wife did and then belittled what she did. My wife and I continued to look at each other, like WTF. We signed and left. We were just happy to get out. We got nearly everything we wanted, so it was a win. A week later we get a call from Wells Fargo saying that they were the owner of our loan. We thought it was a prank call or someone trying to get us to give them our personal information. So we called Don to get the scoop on what was going on. He didn't return two calls and voicemails. So we called the store to ask for a manager. They verified that the loan was in fact sent to Wells Fargo, not to Capital One. So the benefits we negotiated were out the window. We spoke with a few managers that weren't very helpful and finally, Don called. He got on the phone with my wife. He told her that he bundled us with a less favorable loan. At least that's what she got after talking over him because he refused to let her speak. He told her "not to get excitable" on the phone. He then told her that he decides where the loans go, she doesn't. Needless to say, we're waiting for Star Mazda to change our loan or to at least apologize. They aren't doing either. If you want to go to Star Mazda, just be aware that they are pretty sexist. They are extremely dishonest and they don't care to have your input when it comes to financing a car. They believe that THEY DECIDE. Not you. UPDATE: Just so everyone is aware, Steve's response is not true. Star Mazda has lied about this and continue to do so. So just know what you're getting into with them. read more

I went in to turn in my leased Mazda vehicle but I was refused of any sort of help by one of the employees just because it was under my mother's name. Instead of trying to get in touch with Chase to verify I was authorized, he just kept telling me that my mother was needed to be there to return the vehicle. She even spoke with Chase/Mazda before to make sure it was okay for me to return the leased vehicle since I have full responsibility of the car. Although I tried to ask questions, he seemed really unhelpful and unwilling to help. I've never been so disappointed by a car dealer especially for a dealer of the car that I have. I went to the Mazda in Culver City on the following Monday, and they didn't even ask any questions. They took the car out of my hands while being very helpful and friendly. I even had my mother call chase leasing/finance department again just to make sure I was authorized. We didn't even get to that point in the culver location, they told me it was fine when I told them registration was under my mother's name. After having said all this, what went wrong here? I went in as a loyal customer, but treated very differently by two different Mazda locations with two different results. There seems to be a bit of discrepancy when it comes to Yelp reviews of Star Mazda. I don't know what others have experienced but my experience working with Kyle was second to none. I have never felt what it was like to have a no pressure type transaction with a dealership and the process was as smoother than I could ever imagined. All my questions were answered, they beat my CU's APR, and I even got a A great deal on some wheels. I know that it's the job of these guys to build rapport and make the sale and if that's how the industry works, they do it very well. If it's not, then even better. I've been to Galpin Mazda in the past for two previous lease vehicles and both experiences were pleasant. I decided to give Star a try. The receptionist was very friendly and offered me a beverage, which is was a nice start to my visit. The salesman was a Mr. Nguyen. He greeted me in a friendly manner initially and showed me a 2018 Mazda 3. We took it out for a test drive and I was interested in buying it, but wanted to bring my wife in another day to also look at the car. This seemed to disappoint Mr. Nguyen. He wanted to know why I didn't come in with my wife and test drive it with her. I just got off work and wanted to get an initial impression of this car. He criticized me for "wasting his time". I was surprised that he reacted in such a manner. I asked why he was suddenly treating me this way. He abruptly cut my visit short and rudely said to me, "I have another customer to see, have a good day". I'm still going to buy the car, but will likely get it at Galpin. I want to start off by saying that I had a great experience here. Abiel Herrera was the reason why. He saw I was looking at cars and approached me. He asked me some basic questions and finally asked if I was interested in any of the cars. I told him that I wanted to see a Mazda 3 hatchback with manual transmission. He then proceeded to find a manual mazda 3 and took me to it. He explained that I can test out the car car and look at it as I pleased. He took me to their only manual transmission Mazda 3. He explained everything would be the same when it came to driving specs but that the trunk was the only difference here. Overall I appreciate how he handled my experience. If your blinkers does not work when you operate the lever, it's a modulator issue! Bulbs and wire connections are fine, however, i was charged a diagnostics test for a $100 bucks. The mechanic comes out to inform me it'll be more money to replace the modulator plus labor! I said no thank you. As a first time Mazda owner, I do like the car because it's fun to drive and I love the newly redesigned exterior. After my lease is up, I will get another Mazda but definitely NOT here and will go at other Mazda dealerships. This place is really small. Not much selection to choose from and because of that they would hungrily rely on a sale made on a day or if there's any sale made in a week or in a month. My sales guy and I'm not going to mention his name here said to me if I could give him a review on Yelp. Because he told me it was his first selling Mazda 6 after working here for 3 years now. I honestly wasn't going to leave a review until the last straw was finding a connector unplugged on my drivers side space. My CX-5 had a recall for a TCU update related to the battery. I scheduled an appt and when I got there, the gentleman who helped me out was very nice and professional from start to finish. I went to the lobby and did work while I waited for my car to be serviced. Some gentleman stepped out of his office and proceeded to mean mug me like I was peeing in the middle of the lobby. It wasn't very nice but I did glare back until he walked away. When they were done with my car, the person who gave my car back to me, Im not sure if it was them or not, but the plastic film booties they use to cover their shoes, were left on my passenger seat, in addition to leaving half of the contents of my center console displaced on the seat as well. While he was accidentally handing me the key of someone else's car, I handed him the used booties and told him that the key wasn't mine. I usually enjoy only leaving positive reviews, but I was a little put off by these small instances of carelessness. Its the little things that make or break service, and as I mentioned before, the original customer service rep was awesome, but the final transaction upon exiting was extremely disappointing. My wife and I had been looking to purchase a car with an optional third row for a couple of months. Supposedly Kia had the best third -row SUV vehicles with their Sorento and Telluride models. Thus, we went to two KIA dealers (Kia of Carson and Kia of Cerritos) and talked to another two via the phone (Kia of Valencia and KIA of DTLA) to talk about these cars but were meant were unrealistic prices, misleading markups, and a take-it-or-leave-it negotiation process. Kia of Carson was especially unprofessional as they never properly printed out their prices when we could not first agree on a price. We started looking at the Mazda CX-9 and were impressed based off their reviews. We then went in to Star Mazda to simply test drive the vehicle and were greeted by Brian who was extremely friendly and talked to us in a comfortable manner. He was not pushy at all and allowed us to test drive the car. Once my wife and I tested out the vehicle, we started talking to Brian about prices, and then Eddie, who was working in sales that day, and ultimately we came out with a brand new 2021 Mazda CX-9! We are in love with the car, but most importantly, we were very grateful of how Brian and Eddie treated us during negotiations; in all honesty, it felt like a realistic conversation between Eddie and us as we worked out prices. He wanted to work with us which led us to want to work with him. The experience was the complete opposite of what we experienced at any KIA dealership and we are thankful for their friendly and comfortable demeanor.
