I decided to scope out the area one week in advance just to see how the ordering process and parking situation was going to be during the weekday. The store itself is clean and while organized. The ladies behind the counter are sweet and quick. The display case has donuts available as well as cupcakes and turnovers. For my office potluck, I ordered 40 count. Not one piece survived the masses! You can definitely lose control and eat more than 5. Always impressed how quickly the senorita bread is made and baked in mins. Always friendly employees and the selection is growing, which I like. One thing I did notice that is different from other Starbreads in CA, this one doesn't have hot dog buns, jalapeño cheese buns, ham and cheese buns, etc. I would LOVE if they could implement that. read more

First time at Starbread in SoCal, particularly in Chula Vista. We walk in, and were greeted immediately by a young lady with, "Sorry we're sold out." Not a hi. No hello. Customer service was out the door. Like, we shouldn't have walked in. So I was looking forward to some fresh cheese rolls while visitingfrom LA, unfortunately got there late and not surprisingly they were sold out. We didn't want to leave empty-handed, and opted for the Ube roll, strawberry roll, sweet roll and a bag of pandasal. The rolls were okaaaay, my issue for the 3 STARS was the taste of the Pandesal, apparently the bread had absorbed the cleaning solution smell of the store and when you bit into it, it had a gross aftertaste. We ended up spitting it out even after trying multiple times to remedy it. Tried putting butter and toasting it. That didn't help. We microwaved it for a few seconds, and the aroma of the store cleaner got amplified and even more noticeable. Sometimes certain foods absorb the smell of their surroundings, like the refrigerator smell in butter. Maybe next time don't use cleaners around the food or store somewhere away from the cleaning solutions. Perhaps change the packaging? It was utterly disappointing and a waste of money. They should just stick to senorita breads and forget everything else. But we're not giving up hope on this great Filipino family-owned franchise! There's a reason why they're famous for senorita bread. Also, try saying "hi! Welcome!" First impressions do count, even if a bakery's reputation precedes itself. Many times, I've had the pleasure of devouring these small, handheld fluffy pieces of bread at parties. Now, this was my chance to visit this store firsthand since I had to pick up several boxes for work. So, happily I drove, early in the morning, looking forward to their fresh baked bread. This didn't disappoint! As soon as I indicated how many boxes I wanted, the cashier disappeared for a bit the back. A few minutes later, I received my boxes full of warm bread!!! I was in the area and needed something sweet to go with my coffee. I searched bakery and Starbread came up. What a great little place! As soon as you walk in, you can smell the Senorita bread baking! Soooo good! While I was waiting, it gave a chance to look at what else they had. I was happy that they had mochi donuts which are my current crush! Oh wow, and malasadas! So I got 10 Senoritas, an ube mochi donut, and a guava malasada. Their mochi donut was good, everyone does theirs different, but it still had that texture that I like. The malasada wasn't as good as I thought it was going to be. It was cold and just tasted like a donut with filling. I guess I'm spoiled from the ones in Hawaii. 4.5 stars I heard a lot about this Señorita (starbread) that was so good. I waited for much of the opening hype to die down so I didn't have to wait in a long line. I got 5 of them for $3. Each piece comes out to 60¢ each no matter how many you buy, no discount for buying in bulk. They came out warm and are Delicious! Very light, buttery sugary and maybe a little salt too. They are magic and worth the hype. I also had a Malasada which was kind of a let down. So when you order the starbread they have it in the back, maybe under a heat lamp or maybe they pop it in the microwave or have them in an oven but its not just sitting there in the case like the Malasadas. The Malasadas were cold and lifeless and just like a cold donut, nothing special. I think they are really missing out on something special here.. They already have a killer product that they serve hot and fresh. Why not the Malasadas too? make them to order when there is no one; when there's a long line make a bunch so that they are all hot and made within 5 minutes, throw them away if they sit out for a certain period of time. This would probably double your business! The Malasadas I had here cold and boring and a huge let down. I think they are missing out on a huge opportunity. The señorita bread was great, highly recommend it, Malasadas not so much. Service was quick and friendly, there was ample parking. I just think they could do so much more! Wanted to see what the hype about this place was about and wow! The senorita bread is a must! I feel that when they are fresh and warm it is just so freaking delicious. Even when they are room temperature it tastes good! The service is very fast and expects people to purchase in huge quantities so I do not feel that you would have to wait any longer than 15 minutes for a huge order. I did call ahead to place an order however the staff did make us wait due to the fact that the person before me had purchased the rest of the senorita bread before the next batch was finished. I would say that the malasadas were mid. I do not think there was a huge difference between the cream cheese and the Bavarian filling one. The flavored pastries are really yummy though because the flavor is so strong. The staff was not the kindest, but there were a lot of people so maybe she was a little flustered. The shop is a decent size, and everything is labeled simply and cleanly. I would eat this again if I was around the area, and highly suggest bringing to parties. I've heard many things about Starbread. I actually had the opportunity to try the starbread on a different occasion a few years ago, but it was not fresh. When the bakery had came to San Diego, I knew I had to try them out myself. I had stopped by a few times now and have tried a few items. Some items include the starbread and malasadas. I came by one morning after the hype died down and was able to buy some for the office. To my luck, I was the only customer on a Tuesday morning around 7:45 am. At this time, I only purchased the starbread for the office. I was in and out of the bakery in less than 5 mins! By the time I got to the office, we all tried starbread. It was the first time I'd eat it fresh. The bread was still warm when I bit it. It reminded me of a limp breadstick with a hint of sugar. It was good! I had 2 and then that was it for me. My coworkers enjoyed it. If I come back, I would purchase the malasadas. I felt like the starbread was missing something, like cheese in the middle. Maybe I'm used to the cheese rolls I'd get at Valerio's. I know I saw posts that the bakery sells the starbread w/ube inside. I'll have to come back for that! Starbread bakery has the best senorita bread you can bring for potlucks or to share with people! I always get a box for my coworkers and they love it, especially when it's fresh. They also have stuffed senorita bread (dulce de leche, Nutella, and another flavor I can't remember), fresh donuts, mochi donuts, stuffed malasadas, pecan tarts, brownies, and other Filipino goodies you normally see at other Filipino bakeries. I personally have never had a problem with service, and the only thing I usually wait for is for them to give me the freshest batch of senorita bread.
