My husband and I absolutely love visiting Starbucks Reserve Roasteries. We've been to three out of the five locations so far, and we've truly loved our experiences in both Milan and Tokyo. We've actually gone back multiple times because they're just that good. I've been to the New York location before, but it had been a few years. This was the first time for my husband and our friends, and all I can say is that it was one of the biggest disappointments. Honestly, it was disappointing across the board, except for the amazing gentleman who greeted us at the door. He was friendly, kind, welcoming, and took the time to explain how the Reserve Roastery works. He was fantastic and was easily the highlight of our visit. After that, everything seemed to go downhill. We ordered quite a bit of food and drinks on the main floor, and after waiting over 30 minutes, we realized our buzzer had never gone off. We had to go find someone and ask what happened to our order. When we finally got our food, about 90% of it was either mediocre or just not good, which was shocking considering how much we've enjoyed the food and drinks at other Reserve locations. We then went upstairs to the bar area for table service, and unfortunately, the experience got even worse. Our server was absent most of the time, not very helpful, and didn't seem to know much about the menu. When I asked what iced teas they had, I was told they didn't have any. I knew that wasn't true, so I ended up going downstairs myself. Instead of checking or offering help, the question was basically dismissed. The service was unbelievably slow. It took around 30 minutes just to get our espresso martinis. When we wanted another round, we couldn't even find our server. Once we finally placed the order, it took another 30 minutes for the drinks to arrive. At one point, when we needed additional seating, we were told to use a child's booster seat as a chair. I honestly couldn't believe that was the recommendation. By the end of it, we had spent around $300 and left wondering what happened. The food wasn't memorable, the drinks weren't anything special, and the service was some of the worst we've experienced, especially at a Starbucks Reserve where expectations are understandably higher. I don't necessarily want to steer anyone away from visiting because I still think a Starbucks Reserve Roastery is something everyone should experience at least once. I genuinely hope our experience was an exception and not the norm. But because we've had such amazing experiences in Milan and Tokyo, I felt it was important to share this one. It's like a Starbucks cranked up to the max. There is a lot of seating so good to chill with your friends with a lot of good food and drinks to choose from and a few areas of which to do it. There are sweet pastries and savory bites and unique coffee drinks to this location. First, we tried the caramel mocha drizzle affogato which was the perfect little sweet treat and a decent size for sharing with a blend of coffee flavor with creamy ice cream and a blend of sauces on top. To go, we got a pastry I hadn't heard of before - the demerara kouign-amann which was a sugar, crispy on top, soft pastry. It definitely had some great options beyond your usual SB fare. There was also a coffee sample available when I went and some blends only found at that location, so we picked up a bag to go (other merchandise was available too). This place has been on my list for quite some time to visit. I can't quite put my finger on it but something felt off. The entire place felt somewhat performative and not authentic! The entire time inside I did not smell one ounce of coffee roasting even though the staff led with this guise that you could get the best cup of coffee in the world here freshly brewed. The staff were knowledgable and enthusiastic as a way to draw in customers and tourists. I'll give them that. They have a large selection of pastries and sandwiches. I tried the raspberry cheesecake ($12.50) and it was stale. On top of that, I could barely taste the flavor. Most of the other treats looked a bit stale as well. Nothing had that sense of freshness to me and service was painfully slowwwww. I will say that the space however is incredible. The bar upstairs is cool and so is the entire layout of the store. Great espresso martinis! My favorite was the peppermint one- it was also the sweetest. The classic one is very good as well. I wasn't the biggest fan of the eggnog one (I also do not like regular eggnog). My sister who enjoys the taste of eggnog loved this one. I really enjoyed trying all of the cold brews but the whiskey barrel aged cold brew blows the others out of the water and remains my favorite coffee. Portions for the martini tasting were rather small and a little pricey. Tasty nonetheless. Good service. I had a great time! The ambiance of this location is amazing and easy to navigate with no issues. Upon entering we are greeted with the nice gentleman who is welcoming and friendly. The service downstair is excellent and friendly with the staff as they are very nice and polite. My biggest disappointment was in the merch area. I asked the staff for a medium size reserve sweater and I was told that she needed to complete her inventory and then will bring the items back in. She could have just grab my item out of the storage to hand it to me but instead she had me wait until she finishes her inventory and she acted that they didn't bring my requested item in where she was the only one doing the merch count on the floor. Some drinks are the same classic ones we loved previously: the whiskey cold brew for example. Some are new and city fab, like the matcha margarita! Loved the seasonal espresso tini flight too!!!! I got the holiday version and the OG. My favorites were the mole chocolate one and the peppermint mocha one!!! Service was a bit slow. Smooth, rich, and full of flavor. The food is also kicked up several notches here, with far more options than a standard Starbucks. I have never been a fan of Starbucks but their Roastery locations are gorgeous. (Pour out a latte for the departed and formerly beautiful Seattle Roastery location which may or may not have been shuttered after the workers threatened to unionize. Now, only two Roastery locations remain: Chicago and NYC.) The place is extremely attractive and much bigger than you think. It also has multiple levels. The upper bar area--which sells real alcohol--is amazing looking. There are many lovely baked good options and interesting coffee drinks you cannot find at regular Starbucks locations. Don't miss the totally nonalcoholic whiskey barrel aged cold brew. It is made with vanilla syrup but this is one absolutely delicious drink. The tiramisu latte is also excellent. I don't love Starbucks' food, generally, but the chocolate hazelnut croissant was solid. This location is literally next to the Chelsea Market. An unfortunate miss for us! My partner and I had our first date at the Roastery in Chicago, where we both live. So he thought it would be a cute idea to relive it in NYC, unfortunately the drinks were the best part.... We shared a hazelnut croissant and a raspberry cheesecake. The cheesecake had a refrigerator taste. So I asked a barista if I could exchange it for their tiramisu cake, they gladly did. But once again it had a refrigerator taste. So far, we had only been to the Roastery in Seattle and now the Roastery in NYC (and Reserve in the Empire State Building). I love how each location has items unique to the city it is located in. This location is WAY less crowded than the original Roastery in Seattle, which is expected to an extent because it's not the original location; however, it is New York so that is still surprising! It could be quite overwhelming. Fret not, there's a greeter at the door who briefly explains how things work. We found seating and checked out the menu (scan QR code by line entrance). My friends went to order while I held down the fort. They were gone for a good 20 minutes. That's quite slow service for an order and pick up situation. They got tiramisu lattes and I got the caramel miso hot cocoa. We were all very disappointed with our drinks. They both said the coffee was MIA from their lattes. My hot cocoa was like a Swiss Miss packet hot cocoa with foam and edible gold on top. Was the miso in the room with us? The chocolate was barely there. You can find one of three US Starbucks Reserve roasters locations in Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan. If you love Starbucks as much as I do you should make a stop here to enjoy beverages not offered at any of their regular locations. After ordering your beverage and food, you'll be handed a pager that will buzz when your order is ready. During this visit, I got the whiskey barrel age cold brew. The cold brew was in a craft to be poured over a large cube of ice. Six pumps of vanilla sweetener is normally added, but I requested 2 pumps because I wanted to taste more of the coffee than the sweetness. The taste was notes of oak, chocolate, and hint of whisky. It is basically a love letter to all that you love about Starbucks, but dreamed that your local one could have on a daily basis. The building is beautiful and one large open space. It has three floors once you are inside. You will see the huge copper roaster in the middle of the space. The staff are all incredibly friendly. We were greeted literally once our feet were inside the doorway. She told us about the space, where to go, how to maneuver for particular items, and to enjoy. We started with the bar upstairs. So we could get an overview of the space. The bar is spacious. But if they were having a busy day I could see how it could fill up fast. The bartender was excellent. Since I was at Starbucks I got an espresso martini flight. I loved the spin they put on two of them. We went downstairs and of course had to get a snack and caffeinated beverage before we left. All of the baked goods are made in house. You literally see bakers making items out on the floor. It is fantastic. I decided to get a Sakura float. It was a seasonal beverage they were only serving at the roastery. As well as the matcha butterfly tea swirl cake. Both were delicious! The roastery does have a lot of seating. We had to walk around and wait until someone left to get seats. It is a popular place. Just something to keep in mind if you plan to sit. There are bathrooms. They are unisex. The bathrooms were clean. And there was an employee stationed at the bathrooms keeping up with them to make sure they stayed that way. Came here during my trip to NYC. While I am not a coffee drinker, I do appreciate other drinks and the food items they carry. We just happened upon this location and saw it was one of a few Reserve Roasteries (six) in the country and decided to find out what it was all about. Upon entering, you see that this is not your typical Starbucks. The space is massive and has multi-levels. The entrance level had the food area with a great selection of food items found in your local Starbucks and some exclusive to this location (fig walnut ricotta toast, smoked salmon and cream cheese on seeded cornetto, chocolate ganache brownie, olive oil cake...you get the idea, right?) There was also a station offering complimentary coffee tastings. They have full service coffee stations on all levels, with seating for you to enjoy your order. The bottom level had an Experience Bar, with coffee brewing equipment for speciality drinks that were prepared and reminded you of a mad scientist in his laboratory. What a great presentation! Starting on the bottom level they also have a huge coffee roasting machine that churns the coffee through plastic piping you can see. It was impressive. They also plenty of Starbucks merch for purchase. There was a train station display board that changed with the latest Starbucks information similar to ones that change to display the latest train arrival and departure times. On the third top level, there was the Arriviamo Bar, featuring cocktails, wine, beer, and small bites. We grabbed a table and ordered a couple of cocktails featuring coffee and other libations, notably whiskey. We ordered the Roastery Old Fashioned, which included the Starbucks Reserve Cold Brew, Iwai Tradition Whiskey, Amani Del Capo, Pure Maple Syrup, Balsamic Vinegar, and Orange Expression and the Starbucks Reserve Espresso Martini Flight of three, which included Orange Cacao, Mole Spice, and Cherry Limone. Let me start off by just saying each one of these drinks was exceptional. The old fashioned, although it included caffe and balsamic vinegar, was barely detectable, great for a non-coffee, whiskey loving gal such as myself. Each of the martinis had a notable espresso taste, they were espresso martinis after all, lol, but each was delightful. All in all, if you love coffee this is a must visit. While walking the streets of New York, family we were visiting recommended we check out the Starbucks Reserve Roastery. I honestly assumed it would be just another Starbucks, but let me tell you as soon as I walked through the front door, I was in awe! Like what the heck did I just walk into?!? The space is bright, open, and very inviting. It's set up so nice. The amount of exclusive merchandise is incredible and I heard you can only purchase there (nope, not even online). The staff really stood out to me. The amount of employees around like each time you turned, but they never felt suffocating. I felt like everyone was upbeat, friendly, happy, and enjoyable to talk to. I had a few small conversations with employees and I always appreciate a personal interaction over a transactional quick experience. Now, I won't lie to you....I feel it's a bit pricey here, but I'm unsure if it's the New York factor or not. My best friend and I sampled the whiskey barrel aged cold brew and that was smooth and delishhh. We purchased one bag to bring back home, but let me tell you, holy cannoli when I saw the $42 price per bag..... my eyes and mouth went eeeekkkkk... why?!!! My bank account felt that and said you better fully enjoy this coffee, haha. I also learned there are only 6 locations of these worldwide and you can book an experience/tour here, but unsure what that all includes and/or how much it costs. Incredibly beautiful store, totally worth coming here to watch walk around and enjoy. Definitely not the place to buy a coffee, I have just paid over nine dollars for the toll coffee, yes nine dollars regular coffee not even fancy-schmancy cappuccino just a dark black dripcoffee. Starbucks Reserve in Chelsea is officially my second favorite location so far. The space has this perfect blend of rustic charm and upscale New York City elegance, and the warm smell of freshly roasted coffee hits you the moment you walk in. I ordered a hot vanilla latte, which came in a beautiful mug and tasted just as cozy as it looked. Staff were all friendly and helpful. There were plenty of seats, so I settled in, sipped my drink, and watched the massive roasters in action while doing a little people-watching. They also have so much merch. I honestly wanted to buy everything. A great spot to relax and soak in the NYC vibe. read more
