We stopped at Starvin' Marvins for dinner on our first night in Branson. From the roadside it looked appealing and had a fairly full parking lot. I wish I had checked the reviews first. 3 days later my husband still talks about how bad it was. After checking out the lackluster buffet, the husband ordered the shrimp po-boy. It literally fell apart with the first bite. The Dutch crunch type of bun disintegrated. It was either too stale or I'm not sure - but it was almost cracker like and became powdery chunks. The server said that she had never seen anything like it. I ordered the shrimp salad. I love Cajun, but not too hot. I asked the server and she said the boiled shrimp did have a little kick, so I took my chances. It had no Cajun flavor at all. The only spice was oddly from the honey mustard dressing I had on the side. Otherwise, it was a fresh basic salad. Our teen boys had the fried shrimp and fries which was good but average. Neither finished their meals which says something. The hostess was great and gave us a great trip to check out Presley's Country Jubilee for a show. (It was excellent). The server was nice and did a good job. With the exception of the po-boy, the portions were large but way overpriced. This place was HORRIBLE!!! We went there yesterday, our server spoke broken english at best and understood only alittle of what we said. Our food came out one dish at a time with a good ten minutes in between. when i asked to speak to a manager i was told that there was not one available and an asst. manager was not there either. So someone sent an older waitress over to speak to me. To come and find out there was a manager there because he kept peeking around the corner at us! The buffet looked super sad and a couple of items were unrecognizable. The ambiance was fair at best. As we left after we were told that our meal was comped the waitress stopped us to give us the bill to pay!!! Ate at "Starvin Marvin's" last night. Good food. Buffet was kept well stocked with fresh food.

All these fools leaving 1 star reviews maybe try and order some fresh food off the menu and don't be cheap and take the $15 buffet scraps? The service is second to none- we sat down and had our drinks, appetizers, and entrees within 45 minutes tops- more like 30. Our waitress Nancy stopped by to make sure we had everything we need plenty of times, and was extremely kind and helpful with any questions we had. We had the coconut shrimp and blackened fish and it was AMAZING. We are from out of town and this was the only restaurant we ate at that wasn't disappointing. It was about $65 for two people and a LOT of food. 10/10 would recommend, truly unfortunate to see this place under 4 stars. This place is on the lower end of the food chain. Food was either no flavor, too runny or too salty. The food looks and tastes more like nursing home food. This is definitely NOT a seafood restaurant!!! We was too hungry to look at the food selection when we got there. We googled and it was a seafood restaurant buffet so we just went there. Stopped to eat at Starving Marvin's on way back from Talking Rock Cavern. It a Cajun style restaurant and decor. Really enjoyed the meal. They have a buffet, but we ordered off the menu. They have a good selection of food items on their menu. Being from Alabama I had to try their Chicken and Sausage Gumbo. It was not as thick as I usually get, but was very good and flavorful. Also had a little of their fried fish and it was excellent. Our waitress was Kelly. She very knowledgeable, attentive and personable. She could run a school on how to be a hood waitress. Not sure about the bad reviews here. There was a little buffet for $12 or $13 dollars. It wasn't bad at all. The catfish was perfectly cooked. Crispy on the outside and flakey on the inside. Honestly that's all I ate it was so yummy. It was salty though, which seems to be a theme in the area. My son ordered from the menu and enjoyed a chicken sandwich and my husband tried multiple thing from the buffet and enjoyed it all. read more

I can only comment on the breakfast buffet. We take our kids and their friends down to Branson for Christmas. We always stop at least once one our trip to Stavin Marvin's. It's a lot disconcerting when a place bills itself as a Cajun restaurant. But their Lunch Buffet isn't Cajun, is mostly bland, and the best dish was the green beans. Unfortunately my green beans came with a piece of stiff Saran Wrap, the size of a US Quarter! It did make it into my mouth, but it didn't choke me, but a kid it most likely would have. We gave it to our waitress, no apology, nothing at all from her after taking it, except, "I guess I should tell the kitchen," and she walks away. When later asked, what was Cajun in their very limited buffet, "Our dinner buffet is Cajun, not our lunch buffet." Well, the ads don't make that distinction. The lunch just wasn't palatable to our liking. . . Even their salad part of their lunch buffet was a disappointment. I've never been much for dandelion greens (pretending to be lettuce), but if you do enjoy them . . . We left plenty for you to enjoy! We felt pretty ripped off. Even the cashier didn't even ask, "So, how was everything?" I suspect they've heard the appropriate answer plenty of times before we got there. One last observation after reading the reply's from Amanda, an owner. . . It's all lip service. The lackluster of this restaurant has a pretty consistent presence here, and the "Form letter" response is just that. They are making money by serving it the way they have been, and could really care less of our opinions! Waitress took our appetizer order. We waited 20 minutes to be told they were out of what we had ordered. We observed another waiter taking food off the buffet and serving it to a customer. I know i'm Texas that is against health department regulations. Even though they were in error we had to pay for our iced teas we had. The name of the restaurant seemed appropriate to our situation and we weren't familiar with the chain so we came with no preconceived expectations. After two weeks of "sticker shock" with the prices in Branson, the lunch buffet seemed like a good deal so we dove in. The buffet had plenty of choices so my cowboy loaded his plate with spaghetti and salad while I grabbed a couple of pieces of the hamburger steaks, a roll and some salad fixin's. Neither of us were disappointed as we finished off our meal with apple cobbler for him and blackberry for me. As we headed down the road, both of us agreed that for us, Starvin Marvin's was the best of the best on our Branson trip. We went here on Mother's day. We were a large group. I'm taking this into account, since they were a bit busy this day. Our servers seemed a bit frazzled, and I'm sure the kitchen staff were swamped, so I'm taking this into account as well. That all being said, our server was just flat out rude. When we did finally get our food, it was lukewarm, and very salty. The gravy was rather bland too. Our server, who saw us bow our heads and say grace before our meal, did try to be nice when giving us our check afterwards, by saying God Bless and Via Con Dios to us, but I was still annoyed at his rudeness, and so was my wife. I'm going to chalk this first time experience up to an over worked staff, and a busy work day, but they did not leave a very good first impression. We may go back our next visit, but we'll see. read more

Tried this restaurant on our first evening in Branson. Most of our party (7) had the buffet. Two had the famous crab legs and barbecue ribs. I was very disappointed at the buffet station. Food quality was not consistent. Frog legs were over cooked and so was the fried shrimp. Also serving tongs kept being left "in" the food (total germ incubator). Ribs were dry and eh! I have managed kitchens as well as cooked in them. This place was so very disappointing beyond words. The salad bar left a lot to be desired. Absolutely no options but a very few toppings. The proteins were fish which was good. Extremely dry a unpalatable chicken tenders. Bread stick were the only bread and they were so dry with no flavor not even pretend butter helped. A few veggie options again, not very good. Two "cobblers" that were so sweet I could not eat it. One small buffet table with very little to offer. You wouldn't be missing anything if you didn't go. This place was gross. The all-you-can eat buffet was not visually pleasing. There was mostly fried foods on the buffet and the salad choices looked just as bad. Fast-foward to the waiter that took the order for our large party. I think his demeanor could have been better. The way he posed his questions was is if we were bothering him and he was in a rush. In the end he pulled it off and got us our food promptly. I ordered the fried shrimp po boy sandwich. It was partially warm. Yeah...we all want partially warm food for dinner. My fries were also cold. I will say the sauce they serve with the sandwich was good. I was too hungry to ask them to remake my food so I just picked through it until my cousin offered me some of her fried catfish. That was actually very hot and appetizing. (That's why they got the one star.) As I mentioned we were a large party, I think about 23 people total. During the end of our visit, the kids got antsy and were walking back and forth between the tables we occupied. One of the hosts rudely pushed one of the children and talked to him with such disrespect. This took me over the edge. I politely told my family it was time for us to leave. I didn't want to make a scene. Did I mention that from the moment we entered the establishment there was nothing but stares. Why you ask? African-American family in a mostly Caucasian restaurant. It made us uncomfortable, but what can we do? Nothing but enjoy our lives. One day people will learn to see more than color. Do yourself a favor, and just turn back now, don't even bother walking in the door. That's what we should have done when we arrived at this place. First, when you walk in, you're greeted by the stench (and I'm not exaggerating-- stench!) of fish that just comes slapping you in the face. That should have been the biggest red flag for me, but I pressed on and decided to continue. The hostesses are nice, but they're kind of all over the place as far as how to seat the waiting customers. But, after some grappling they figured things out and we were seated in a booth in the corner of the restaurant. When our waitress came to our table, she was very nice and courteous. She explained to us the menu and also the buffet options, which were either with crab legs (much more expensive, and probably worth it) and no crab legs (which was cheaper, and NOT worth it). We opted for the buffets with no crab legs-- what a mistake. When we got up to the buffet tables, we gave the buffet a once over and we were so close to just walking out because it was SO underwhelming. But again, we pressed on. Normally, I can find things I like on any buffet, because I just love food, but not on this one. They had fried clam strips, coconut shrimp, chicken strips, crawfish (eyeballs and all! A waitress did teach us how to dissect it, which was educational...?), shrimp, veggies, and desserts-- which all seem awesome in retrospect, but not in this case. I tried a little bit of everything and it was all completely one note-- no flavors at all. So disappointing. It took me an hour to get rid of one plate of food. Also, I completely understand that the atmosphere the staff is working in is fast paced and it makes you hot. But man, if you are going to be filling food at the buffet and your sweat is DRIPPING on the buffet, then you just need to get a bee keepers helmet or something to keep those sweat drippings out of there. It's not appropriate, especially when you're talking to the customers and they see it happen. Such a health hazard. To say it again, this is a terrible restaurant.
