States has changed. The hours are inconsistent, they don't offer toast anymore, and staff do not emote the same vibe as the place calls for. Coffee is still good, but the guy who used to roast coffee isn't there anymore. In fact, none of the regular workers are there anymore. The staff I see today, while nice, use the place to hangout. States gives an industrial/hipster vibe, but the attire of the staff don't match the brand. I feel like the place looks gloomier. The cheerfulness and Cheers-like environment isn't there anymore. I'll probably keep going here and there, but man, I miss the old states. read more

Ambience is more of an industrial feel, in a good way, with lots of space to hang out and chill. Had quite a few selections of pastries but was unable to have it warmed. It's summer break so this teacher can go in during non busy times! Every time I'm driving by on the way to work, the line is out the door for a mile . But the first think I try is the chai (hot)... oh it was so goood, I wanted another cup! I got the avocado toast, this wasn't my favorite variation. voted best coffee shop in martinez 2024! i didn't realize there were other locations in the Bay, including one in oakland! it was poppin on a friday at 11:30am. the line was about 5 people long when i arrived, with a steady stream coming in after i ordered as well. lots of people were posted with laptops in the large indoor seating area. they also have some tables outside. the wait to order was a bit longer than expected, but the staff was apologetic and kept thanking us for being patient, so maybe they were short staffed that day. i got an iced vanilla latte -- a solid choice! although i was told by a friend later that the honey latte is the way to go. so maybe i'll give that a shot next time. lots of pastries still available in the case. nothing spoke to me this time but they looked delicious and others in line snagged a few. read more

On our coffee pilgrimage today we visited States Coffee in Martinez. Entering the old brick building, we were impressed with the clean, industry modern design of the enormous coffee house. And the display of tempting baked good was irresistible. I had the veggie scone, which today consisted of broccoli, mushrooms, and parm. It was the perfect scone consistency--layers of flaky, yet moist pastry with a savory, yet slightly sweet deliciousness. Hubby had the morning bun and didn't give me a bite, so I have to trust him that it was "really good." (In all fairness, I wasn't about to share my scone!) Our coffee: I had the honey latte with oat milk. It's. so. good. Hubs had a vanilla oat milk latte. Same goodness. Oat milk is my fav for lattes, but higher in calories than I like so I don't get it often. It's also higher in potassium than almond milk, which isn't so great for my Groom. Because States doesn't offer almond milk, this will likely not be a frequent visit for us unless we go with regular coffee/tea, but we will be back. What was significantly different from the one in MacArthur is the seating space; there is a lot. There is outdoor and indoor seating, couches, benches, tables and chairs, bar stools, booths, lots of list off. There is even a semi-closed off room named "family space." This is still wide open and no sound proof, but it was a good closure space for parents to sit down and let the young ones wander around in the comfortable visibility. The line goes out the door, and it took around 10-15 minutes to get inside for our ordering time. I love the interior of the cafe. The building is made out of brick and the ceiling is very high. At the center of the ordering table, there is a display case full of sweet baked treats. I was feeling of eating something savory, so I was looking at their toast menu and picked the plain and simple butter toast. When I mentioned that I would be eating inside, they handed me a number card. I saw the staff walk around with a cup of coffee and delivering the dishes to the guests with the number card. Since I saw that, I decided to find a seat and wait for my coffee and toast to arrive. However, it never came. Well, we waited 5-10 minutes and we assumed this was due to how busy the staff were. 30 minutes of waiting and we knew we have been patient far too long. Buttered toast should not take over 30 minutes. I should have realized something was off, when the staff never asked me for the receipt. The good thing was that the sole proof of my purchase was from my bank app. My relative took the initiative and took the purchase proof to the staff. Still, that took another 5+ minutes for the order to arrive. In this case, since my family member was at the counter waiting, the coffee or the toast wasn't delivered to our table. 35 minutes of sitting at a table with a number for an order that was forgotten was an unfortunate memory to look back on. Turns out, something happened with the card machine, and so our order didn't go through. Out of the 3 years of using the tap purchase, this was the first that has ever happened, but things happen. The power of how delicious the coffee and the buttered toast was tugged this star rating at 4-stars. To be honest, if it weren't for that forgotten order, this cafe would have easily gotten the same 5-star as the one in MacArthur. Fortunately, the coffee and the toast were piping hot because they were just made. States coffee is really good and I love how creamy tongue feel I get from their drinks. The honey latte is good but the plain old latte tastes great too. The toast was a nice addition to the coffee. It was sliced thick, almost one inch width and a even spread of butter was spread on top. Curious on the bread and the butter's brand name because the combination was wonderful. The bread had a faint sour taste to it, and as a fan of sourdough, I loved it. If the same bread was used for the other menu (cinnamon and sugar) then maybe it might not blended well. Glad to have chosen the butter. Food was great, the ambiance was calming and relaxing. Might need to come back for redemption and an updated review to mask the first visit. read more

Good vibes. Friendly workers. Tons of pastries. My partner and I were checking out a wedding venue nearby and decided to come here for a quick breather. The area was very lively with mini golf across from here so parking was a bit tough, but we were able to find a spot 2 blocks away and didn't have to pay for parking. I opted for their honey latte, my partner got their oat milk latte and a blueberry donut and we were given our order pretty quickly before going to find a place to settle in and enjoy the coffee shop. The place is bigger than anticipated. At first glance, I thought it was just what we see when we stepped inside: the cashier, the coffee bar, the pastries... but there's actually another room full of tables and chairs... plus another room next to it that belongs to States Coffee. First time in this coffee shop. When you walk in the ambiance is cool. It feels like a hip place to sip on coffee. Brick walls, black industrial lighting. Service was okay with 4 young adults working and no people in line, I believe I shouldn't have had to wait to have my order taken. Now, I came in here for the coffee. I usually order drip with heavy whipping cream. They didn't have heavy whipping cream, so I stuck with black. When I saw the young women pour the drip, it looked like diner coffee. You know, that watered down coffee. The color of the coffee looked watered down. I had to add half and half, which I usually don't drink. It still tasted watered down, so, I bought a shot. The coffee was still bad. The one star was for the ambience. When you call yourself a coffee shop, make coffee the correct way, nice and rich. Watered down drip coffee for coffee drinkers is not worth $4. That's why people order americano's. For $5, I would have preferred going to Starbucks. Is the second time I've been to this place and I have to say the customer service is horrible it hasn't improved at all. I was the only one in line and this two girls were rather talking to each other instead of helping me. No body is even smiling or welcoming you, it's seems as if they're force to be there. I walked around the place before finding the main entrance my first time here. They had multiple entrances, both inside seating and another entrance for more seating, and outdoor seating. Perfect spot for meet ups or to work remotely. I had some time to kill on a weekday while picking up my nephew so I worked remotely from here. I ordered their honey latte and the avocado toast. For a Friday right before noon it was pretty busy, lots of people coming in and out, work meetings, and people working. Their menu is fairly basic but all really good quality. I enjoyed my latte and my avocado toast as well. They have other toasts available as well as some other pastries and sweets on display. I enjoy their coffee and especially the space. Well, I have been coming to states coffee on and off since about 2017. They have expanded their Martinez location quite a bit. But, I noticed today some inequities that should be addressed. BTW, all the people working today were awesome, this is not about any employees. The line was out the door and down the street this Sunday morning. They had to keep telling people to keep the doorway clear. Firstly, why is there only 1 barista machine??? You can obviously afford to pay for all that empty room in the other 2 space you expanded into. Secondly, why isn't there a 2nd bathroom?? There is space for it. You have PLENTY OF ROOM for the above mentioned things, yet for years there is still no 2nd machine or bathroom. How about putting that into effect in 2025? BOTTOM LINE IS, DO BETTER. read more

This is a great location to catch up with friends or sit to study. I've been here a few times and every time it never disappoints! Can I just say they have delicious gluten free donuts!! I've had their banana bread and it is steals my dreams every time! For coffee, I've tried the lavender latte and the vanilla latte and vanilla is the winner for me. DANG! States Coffee has been on my list of places to try for a long time, and we finally made it in! The shop is really big with lots of places to sit inside and outside. It's a cool vibe, with brick walls, high ceilings and the coffee roasting machine. Lots of people hanging out, talking, working, enjoying the space. We loved it! We ordered iced latte/iced mocha, and two breakfast pastries. Everything was absolutely DELICIOUS! The coffee taste is wonderful and rich and the drinks were tasty. The pastries were gourmet!!! We ended up going back and buying more to bring home. Everyone who works there had a smile for us and we felt welcomed. Nice touch - they give you a number for your table and then bring your coffees to you!! There was a line the entire time we were there and I can see why. Ordered a vanilla latte ($5.50 + $0.75 almond milk) and a drip coffee ($3.50 - they rotate their coffee of the day), a chocolate babka and banana bread. The total was $18.75. Coffee has a good strong taste and the latte was smooth, though not very/too vanilla-y. The pastries were both moist and delicious! There was a small line when we arrived around 8:45am on a Friday. They have a nice outdoor patio area that is dog friendly, and an entire two seating/family rooms if you wanted to post up to read a book or do some work. Came here on a weekday morning after several coffee-loving friends suggested it. (I wanted to avoid the notorious weekend lines.) Had to pay for parking at the public lot next door but was lucky to find a wayward dropped quarter below the meter that someone was apparently too lazy to pick up--my lucky day! Space was bustling, clean, bright and modern. Tried a couple of their pastries: cinnamon roll and a cheesy/herby bacon croissant. Both were excellent but staff just laughed when I asked if they could be warmed up. At a steep $5 per pastry, offering warming is not too much to ask, IMHO. Their ubiquitous Seattle-based competition does it! Had their "neighborhood blend" brewed coffee. It was fine but nothing to rush back for. I've been coming to States in Martinez for a long time and have always found the coffee and atmosphere here to be awesome. Also the baristas tend to provide timely and welcoming service, which is super appreciated. BUT I don't understand why it is so hard for this location to stay open the duration of their posted hours. On Google Maps it says they are open until 4:00 pm daily. On their website it says they are open until 4:00 pm daily. Unfortunately this was not sufficient due diligence today, as they closed at 3:00 pm. I see that the time was updated on Yelp, which I wish I would've thought to check before heading over from Concord but I was certain their website would have the correct information. This isn't the first time this has happened. On a number of occasions over the years we've come to the cafe only to find a handwritten sign saying they had to close early. It is horribly deflating to pull up to a favorite spot and find that it is inexplicably closed. I REALLY REALLY hope States resolves whatever is holding them back as beyond this inconvenience I believe they've had to close a few locations recently. This place was convenient as I was headed to an appointment in the area. The reviews were mostly promising so why not? I came on a Tuesday morning at 8:55AM. Plenty of parking and there's nobody in line. There's about 4 people behind the counter just enjoying their conversation. I was not acknowledged, did not hear good morning, no one looked up nor smiled. So, I agree with the other folks who brought this up. The staff here are not friendly. No customer service at all. Dang, I even gave them a tip. Ugh! Oh, the coffee you asked? It's nothing special, really. Why waste time coming over when you've got your usual place close to home?
