Let me start by saying that cowboy star is usually my go to place for a steak dinner for any special occasion. But I decided to switch it off this year for my birthday and boy am I glad that I did. Brian O'Malley and his assistant John went above and beyond to make my special day great and make me feel like I was the most important girl in the room. I decided to go out to dinner by myself because I wanted to have a peaceful day by myself with nobody bothering me and they really cater to me to make me feel special and make me feel like it wasn't totally weird that I was out to dinner by myself. From the minute, I sat down they made me feel super special, chatting with me, asking me how my day was, asking me if I needed anything.constantly (but not to the point of annoyance) .. we had great conversation about some important things going on in my life (they will know what I am talking about) .. and they really created a very memorable experience for me. While I was there, I texted several of my friends that I was having the best time and an honestly was the great nightcap to a really great birthday. The food was great, but honestly, the experience was even better and I will absolutely be back. I ordered the petite filet mignon, the lobster tail, the whipped mashed potatoes, the sautéed broccoli, the Caesar salad to start, which was unbelievable with homemade croutons the best croutons I've ever had in my life, and it was finished off with a complementary Keylime pie, which was the best Keylime pie I've ever had. We stumbled upon Steak 48 Del Mar while searching for fine dining in the San Diego area. It was the greatest dining experience we have ever had. There is no way to describe the incredible flavor and quality of the food. Each item is perfection, with attention paid to every aspect of the food. The steaks were perfectly cut and cooked, the sides were fantastic and the dessert was literally out of the is world. I can not stop thinking about that food! Our wait staff were amazing, at one point there were 4 people bringing the food and serving sides, etc. This meal comes in at around $100 per person, and it was worth every penny. SO Extremely disappointed. I was very excited to celebrate here. I just dined here last night for my mom's birthday. I made reservations for a party of 5 thru open table. I made them well over 3 weeks ago. Left a message on open table stating it was her birthday and she was a special person to me. My mom is a recent cancer survivor, and had a stroke 3 years ago. So EVERY birthday I have with her is extremely special. That's why I chose this restaurant. I woke up this morning bothered about last night and had to leave a review so others would be aware. Let me start by stating the good. Someone called the day before to ask for my mom's name which was very nice. She also received a nice card from the GM thanking her for choosing Steak 48. Special dessert included her name. Lovely. Laura our server was personable and attentive.I do believe she forgot we ordered a bottle of wine because I had to ask her about it. Not a big deal but still. 5 star deserves 5 star service. Also when the bottle came out she asked my guest to try it when she should have asked me since I was the one who made the reservation, hosting and ordered the bottle. Standard. . The steak was very good. Top 3. The appetizers/sides good. I would love to review the food but I know for a fact that I didn't enjoy it as much because of the experience. This restaurant doesn't seem to realize how very important the atmosphere is part of fine dining. Here goes the bad. Very bad. It completely ruined the evening. While the server was telling us about the menu, I even said "omg they are so loud!" And she kind of winced and said something but I COULDN'T HEAR HER and that was all that was done..I'm not over exaggerating when I say we couldn't hear her. I eventually gave up and just asked my friend next to me what she said since she was right next to her. I feel after that comment, she or someone should have offered us another table. But no.nothing. I kept a happy face for my mom, and for my guests, the other guests kept mentioning the noise and how we couldn't hear each other. they were not having a good time. Other patrons were also turning around. I felt sorry for the couple sitting behind them as well. Celebrating something because they brought out a dessert w a candle. For a 5 star restaurant who states on their website they enforce a dress code, they missed the mark on the overall experience. My mom couldn't hear her friend right next to her. I honestly would have complained more to the server but I didn't want to make the evening worse for my mom. I have been to MANY upscale restaurants all over the country/world and this was supposed to be my top 2 to go to since I was so excited it was coming to my city. But sadly no. This is a top notch restaurant with a wonderful fully stocked bar. They have a wide selection of wine. Food is delicious. We had the seafood tower for an appetizer. The shrimp are huge, fresh and cold. The Crab is sweet and the meat from one serving is plenty. Many oysters from which to choose. All delectable. Our party all had steak: rib eye, filet mignon, all seasoned and cooked per order. Sides are awesome. The potatoes were seasoned and cooked with perfection. Brussels sprouts were tasty. The ambiance at Steak 48 is impeccable, and the attention to detail, even down to the Toto toilets, is unmistakable. The service is also friendly and amenable, but this is where your expectations should end. Every dish is slathered is an ungodly amount of butter that would even make Paula Deen blush. To top it off, the plates were also served with a pool of butter. It was as if butter and salt would deter one from noticing the downright mediocrity of the supposed dry aged steak and sides. We were surprised at how busy this restaurant was on a Friday evening. The food was great and the service was immaculate. It seems that many people were there celebrating their anniversaries. My parents did that too. We were treated with some nice desserts. Our server also made sharing food as a family very easy. My husband and I wanted to enjoy a Valentine's Day dinner but was unable to do so the day of, so with grandma babysitting the baby, we decided to try Steak 48 for a belated Valentine's Day. The restaurant itself was beautiful. It appears to have taken over Searsucker and two other businesses that resided, so you can imagine how large the restaurant is. The decorations were done tastefully, with wines on presentation, as well as the raw bar and dessert bar. We were seated towards the back of the restaurant so we essentially were able to tour the entire restaurant! The service was impeccable, from the hostess to the busboy. At our table alone we were serviced by 5 individuals, ranging from our main server, Armen, to servers who distributed our sides onto our plates. Armen was able to provide excellent recommendations, and remembered our names, including my difficult Korean one, as he wished us good night after our meal. We decided to splurge since it's rare for us to go out without our baby, so we had a little bit of everything: -Chicken fried lobster -crispy shrimp deviled eggs -Shrimp cocktail -Florida jumbo crab claws -Miyazaki Wagyu -Tajima Wagyu -Au gratin potatoes -Corn crème Brûlée I can honestly say this meal was rich and decadent, with us leaving more than satisfied at the end of the night. This is solely for their private dining. I tried to make a reservation for 10 people and it was the most un-accommodating team I've ever worked with. I host events across the states for groups, all the time. I'm in the event industry and I've never worked with a team who is so cold. When teaching out they told me, no more than 10 people are allowed in the private room with a $2.4K food & bev minimum. $270 ish a person is pretty high. Average sits around $175. After chatting a little more, the room holds 16. That's why the F&B is so high but I was told only 10 people are allowed right now so even though it's priced for 16, a group of 10 needs to pay to compensate that even though the restaurant made the rule of 10? I wanted to bring in a custom cake. Most places allow that with a cake fee. Nope, not this place! They "will eventually have a cake service but it's not online yet". Okay great, let's do it and put it towards that minimum. Nope, not available and still can't bring in an outside dessert even though they're the ones with the limitations? In what way has this private party booking made to seem like this is a warm place to celebrate a milestone birthday? It was AMAZING!! The service was top notch. Servers were on top of everything. My girlfriend and I were celebrating our birthdays. I mentioned it when I made the reservation and they wrote out a nice card for us. I was fortunate enough and blessed to be gifted a new heart last year as well. The steaks were ordered a 12 oz Filet and a 22 oz Ribeye were so so so good. I had the filet with a crusted blue cheese top......WOW. It was grilled to perfection. As soon as it hit my palate, I was done. My girl loved her Ribeye. I think she only ate about half and had an entire steak to take home. The sides were really good as well. When they bring them to the table, the server actually serves them from the dish to your plate. We barely touched them. We were already full from the steaks. The great thing about place was the free desserts they gave us. We got a Key Lime pie and a Triple Chocolate Bombe. My grandson and I were tearing the pie up. It was decadent and sweet and tart. What a great experience. My ribeye was well worth the price and cooked to perfection. It was our anniversary and we offered a complementary dessert from the dessert menu. My wife and I were both stuffed so we told our waiter we would be fine with just a mango sorbet to share. We had a dozen oysters, the BLT salad and the superfood salad to start. Although the salads were a bit overdressed, they were delicious and the oysters were super fresh! For our entrees, we ordered the Australian wagyu (amazing!), prime filet, ribeye and the king crab legs. Looks high end and wanted to be "fine dining" but fell short. My husband and I came here about 2 months after they opened. I personally did not think that it would be that good and thought that this would be another classic example of a place that looked way nicer than the food actually tasted. I was right. The inside is very dark and gives the vibes of a late night restaurant or speakeasy with the mood lighting. What cuts against the white linen and servers in their white coats is the bar smack in the center of the restaurant with the high tops surrounding. That alone diminished the ambiance from a fine dining establishment to a mixed use "nice" sports bar and nicer seating in the perimeter. All offering food at the same price. Our total bill was about $300 for apps, mains, sides and a drink. My husband ordered an old fashioned which ended up getting returned because it lacked taste of a usual OF and was watered down, did not have the orange hint, and was bitter. He had a glass of red at dinner which he liked enough to order another glass. To start we had the pork belly, calamari, and Caesar. For the salad, the poached egg on top was something we hadn't experienced before but was a nice touch to the overall dish. The dressing itself was nothing special and lacked flavor. The pork belly sat atop a sweet chili oil sauce and was muted by it. The sweetness overpowered the plate and it was not good. I don't think it was a good call. The calamari was not that good either. It did not taste fresh as with most calamari dishes and there was less calamari and more shrimp. The breading was not crisp and on the side it was a little watery which told me it was previously frozen. I believe I may have sent it back but as I write this review I am not sure. The bread that we ordered came with dinner and was similar to the Parker rolls from Rare Society but were dry. It was very disappointing. They were supposed to be drizzled or cooked in butter and light, fluffy and melt in your mouth delicious. However; that's not how they tasted. They were hard in some parts, under cooked in others and were dry on the outsides. I ALWAYS eat my bread. Always. I am a bread person through and through. The photo you see attached in all that was left because it was not good. For the mains, we each got steak and shared sides. The steak was OK, the second time. I asked for medium rare and it was medium. I had them take it back and when it finally came back it was fine but I had already sat around waiting and had eaten my other dishes. My husband had also finished his meal by the time my steak came out. The creamed spinach had a chunk of frozen spinach that tasted like straight spinach. In other words, it tasted like while mixing the batch, this chunk hadn't fully defrosted and was just plain while the rest of it was "creamed." You can very distinctly taste the difference between creamed spinach that has been cooked in the cream and has marinated in it, versus spinach that was just thrown in and tossed quickly with everything before getting to your plate. Ours was the latter. I set aside the chunk and they took it back and told me that they didn't freeze their spinach. The Au Gratin was fine. It was a little dense and difficult to cut through. From experience working in the kitchen as a busser and food runner I know that they usually prepare the dish in advance and cook it through and then when it's ready to serve they blast it in the broiler to get that caramelized cheese effect in top. That always leaves room for error in my opinion and you end up with cold pieces throughout. As a way to say sorry, the server covered offered to cover and replace the old fashioned that my husband didn't like and then brought us a dessert. It was a cake with ice cream and caramel on top. It was very sweet, but caramel is not my thing. The cake was similar to a butter cake and was very dense and hard to chew. The second old fashioned wasn't that much better. I would say for locals this may be a better place to go and be amongst friends than it is a place to be blown away by the food. The server was very nice and apologetic which we appreciated given that it was our first (and last) time going there. The buzzers were roaming all over but were not great at pre-bussing which led to some stacked plates just waiting around. Also, they serve the plates at 500 degrees which I absolutely despise because it is SO DANGEROUS. I burned myself because the busser put it too close to the edge of the table. This is a classic thing some fine dining places do and it's infuriating because usually they have already cooked the steak by putting it in the broiler, then they put it on the plate and then "flash" the plate in the broiler and serve it to you. It does not actually guarantee that your steak it cooked well at all and only creates a safety risk. Spend your well earned money somewhere else if you are actually looking for food that matches these price tags. read more

Long story short, food is good (not necessarily great), service was miss then hit, and ambiance was... odd. The food is classic steakhouse-- steaks were good, sides were mostly good (wasn't a huge fan of the creamed spinach). 4 stars for food. The service-- we were initially seated in a busy walkway at a table near the bar. Our server was extremely quirky, and we were generally not excited for the table and asked to move. Thankfully we moved to a different part of the restaurant with a much more polished server and were happy with that choice. Ambiance-- the weirdest music selection (EVERY genre, from old country to Rihanna to 80's to Sinatra and everything in between), and MUCH too loud. It was an extremely distracting part of our experience and the thing I remember most negatively. The restaurant itself is beautiful. The honest to god best part of this place are the bathrooms-- automatic Toto toilets with lids that rise on entry, heated seats, and bidet.
