After hearing about this place from a friend, I was more than excited to take a 45 minute trek into DC for a late night dinner, and man was I glad I did. It was tiny in size but ENORMOUS in taste! The food was an amazing treat but the milkshake was truly the star! I had a 'Philly & Cheese omelet w. the works and a Banana & Caramel milkshake, we also tried the funnel cake fries' NUMMY was word of the night! The food was prepared by the owner, Osman, JUST as requested and he even added his own special flare which made it even better. The service was quick and SUPER friendly and since I tip based on service, my tip was equal to the the price of my meal. =o) Of course the place is old, I think I was told it was founded in the early 1900's so a little rustic charm is to be expected. This place had all the makings of a great spot. Retro outfitted and good vibes with a good crowd and good service. Everyone in my party went with simple breakfast stuff but I wanted to get a steak breakfast because the place is called Steak n Egg. But I messed up, the food took much longer than the tables around us and I started thinking to myself it's probably because I ordered the steak. I make enough steak at home to know that they were probably making a frozen steak. When it came it was discolored, a clear cut sign that the steak was once frozen. The staff is absolutely amazing and SO incredibly nice EVEN when the restaurant is SO busy and crowded!!! the owner Ozzy is top notch too! I visited a friend in Maryland and Virginia for the weekend, and it was so awesome to know there was some place open around 2am, especially since my flight from California got into Baltimore at midnight (EDT). It's definitely a busy place, despite the time of day! I ordered the Philly steak and egg. Although it took a while to be made, it was SO good! During my stay in Tenleytown ... I ate here for 75% of the time. This is only for my but my cousins come here quite often and the owners know him by name here. Visit #: 1. I had the chicken tenders and fries, which were delicious! The fries were nice and soft just they way I like it. The chicken was pretty juicy. 2. I had the chocolate chip waffles, and boy were they big and satisfying! They definitely did not skimp on the chocolate here! The waffles were light and fluffy, but huge! Reminds me of Belgian waffles. I also tried the strawberry shake here on an extremely hot day, and the shake was thick and full of strawberries. A nice way to cool off. 3. I had the BLT with ham and it comes with hash brown, which was my favorite! It was huge!!! I was barely able to fit that in my mouth!! I wish I had some more before I left. Been eating here for years and still believe it's the best spot for a late night snack or giant ass meal where the wait staff will never judge your level of intoxication or sobriety! Open 24/7 and just a 10 Min walk from the Tenleytown metro, it's no wonder this is the go-to hangout of American University's frat bros and social activists alike. Very cheap ($3.50 breakfast sandwich is my favorite and you can add turkey bacon, bacon, or sausage for just $1), fast, ample outdoor seating (wheelchair accessible), limited indoor seating at the counter, street parking, and open 24/7! A true local gem where patrons can feel safe and taken care of. For example, a few years ago, a female friend of mine was very intoxicated and headed here to sober up. She had just enough money to pay her tab, but was in no state to make it home by herself, so her waiter called her a cab and paid on her behalf. She never got his name, but will always remember this kindness. And although I've never eaten here during traditional breakfast hours, this food is better than half of the overpriced fancy diners scattered throughout DC. We got breakfast here on a Sunday morning. The weather was chilly, so we were the only ones sitting out on the patio and it was packed inside due to the limited seating. Most people were ordering to-go rather than wait 15 minutes for a spot at the counter. This is a simple, no-frills type of place. In terms of food, everything was good, although nothing special. The hash browns were a little bland and the eggs benedict dish was standard. The best food item we tried was definitely the steak. It was cooked just right and had a nice flavor to it. I decided that I really do enjoy steak for breakfast... The girl who served us was friendly. Both my friend and I got burgers. I got the Brazilian Burger but only the single. It comes with bacon, ham, egg, and cheese. I love breakfast burgers with an egg on it. However, here they cooked the eggs scramble style. I prefer the egg sunny side up so the yoke runs a little. I was disappointed - not sure if you can order how it is cooked. My friend got the jalapeno cheddar burger. We both left very full. The burgers were delicious. I didn't order the funnel cake fries because I was too full after eating my burger. But I saw some orders go out from behind the counter. I wanted to steal one pretty bad! I've had a lot of great memories at Steak n Egg over the years, and I've always enjoyed the thick Belgian waffles. But today perhaps I expected a little too much ordering actual dinner here. I paid $54 dollars and waited nearly an hour for two burgers that were made completely wrong aside from the buns on either end; wrong patty, wrong toppings. The shake was great. The moral of the story is keep your order simple and only come here for the small stuff; shakes, waffles, some eggs ... maybe. read more

Diners live on. An old place that has the aesthetic for sure, but damn the food is incredible. Nabs and Sayif (sorry for the spelling!) were awesome and threw it down on the grill. Steak cooked perfectly, home fries crispy outside and light on the inside, and the scrambled eggs just as fluffy as they ought to be. As for hospitality... We stopped here after a screening up the street at the AMC. It's a small place with bar seating. It appears that there is outside seating available as well during warm weather. We were able to grab two seats at the very end of the bar. We were a little squished until the folks next to us left. We were greeted promptly. We ordered sodas, a mushroom and cheese burger with onion rings, and an apple cinnamon waffle with a side of corned beef hash. The onion rings were great, I love beer battered. The burger was pretty thick and tasty. The waffle had the apples and cinnamon mixed might in hue batter, most places will put it on top but this way was good too. The corned beef hash was good fresh off the griddle. This place is definitely tight but I would go back, it was great late night food. WTF Giving this two stars because of the two things that WERE good: the scrambled eggs and the waffle. From there it went downhill. The turkey bacon was like wood, the turkey sausage was rubbery (think Goodyear tire), and the hash brown patty was like wax. Terrible. We've been once before and ate at the counter and had a good experience, but today was waaaay off. They need to spring for better turkey products (I KNOW they exist because I've bought them) and start making fresher, more flavorful potatoes that aren't what seems like a pre-made patty thrown on a griddle with zero things to flavor it (can I get a diced onion anybody???) Their butter was a strange consistency too. We won't be returning again after blowing $35 bucks on this disappointment today. To the management: please step up your quality AND quality control. The first time I came to this place, I ordered a country fried steak smothered with white gravy, eggs and hash browns. I've been a fan ever since! I love their white gravy, and the coffee is pretty good. They have different steak and egg dishes and it's a bit pricey for just breakfast. So if you're craving steak and eggs, then this is the place to go. It's a pretty small, diner-ish type of place. There's only about 10-12 eat in seats, and more tables for groups in front. Second time at this place and let me just say that I was highly disappointed this time. First off, DO NOT order the so called "fresh orange juice". It's $6 for one cup of orange juice that clearly ISNT fresh! It had no pulp, no one could tell me who made it "fresh" that day, and it tastes like regular orange juice such as "simply orange" that you can get from the grocery store. I was highly disappointed. Especially because a pitcher of orange juice from the grocery store is no more than $4. Plus you get no free refills. So drink very very slow or you'll end up paying $12 just to drink juice. Second, the bacon isn't fresh. I watched the "not so friendly" chef pull out a carton of already cooked bacon from the fridge, take a handful of the bacon and toss it in a bowl above the stove. He then proceeded to basically warm up the already cooked bacon on the stove. So by the time the bacon made it to the plate it was super crunchy. Not tasty at all. Big no no! Third, I ordered home fries with "the works" which includes chilli, etc on top. The cook fixed my plate of home fries then popped it in the darn microwave! Lord! I thought that was very bold to do that infront of customers. So I asked the manager because my home fries were soggy. He claims it's put in the microwave to melt the cheese on top. Um sir no! Anyone who cooks knows that when you put cheese on top of any hot food, it naturally melts. So I don't understand why they do that. Big disappointment all the way around And last, the cook was so tense and unfriendly. He kept shaking his head behind the counter. I ate breakfast here on 08-11-19 because it had good reviews. I ordered a blueberry waffle, sausage and wheat toast. The waffle was actually pretty good. Just by looking at it you don't see any blueberries but they're all in the batter and cooked inside the waffle. But it wasn't like whole fresh blueberries. It was maybe a blueberry mix or something like that. The syrup wasn't that great. Very stringy and I think it's just some cheap stuff bought in bulk. The sausage was in my opinion, gross. It was cold and the flavor was like something that would be served at a public school elementary. I wouldn't order that again for sure. The toast was just toast. Nothing special there. All in all, would I go back? Probably not. I'd rather try another place. The three stars are mostly for the service which was okay and the restaurant itself was kind of cool.
