The diner is a bit grimy. Flies buzz around so you have to protect your food from them (because it is an open-air diner...the door is always left open and the place is tiny so it's unsurprising that flies get in quickly because of the smell of the food...). The food is pretty good though. The diner is so tiny that if you sit inside you wind up facing the cook. It's kind of nice because despite the grimy location, I can watch the cook make my food and I therefore know that it is clean. The blueberry pancakes are a must. They are unique in that the cook does not use the typical pancake mix with blueberries mixed in...he uses some sort of blended mix (looks like the blueberries have been crushed and mixed in with the rest of the batter...) because the batter and pancakes are a bluish purple color. Steak n egg is a neighborhood favorite which serves up traditional breakfast entrees ranging from omelettes to steak and egg sandwiches. Don't expect 5 star service as the place usually has a maximum of 4 staff on hand. Truly a stellar restaurant right on the outskirts of downtown Tenleytown. Located at the top of the hill one can feel the anticipation just driving up Wisconsin. The place always smells like candies waffles when you drive by. I've tried nearly everything on the menu and each item tastes fantastic from the blueberry pancakes, chocolate chip waffles, to the legendary corn beef and hash. When you eat inside you have a very 50's truck stop diner feel. The staff is warm and friendly and they are the type of people I stick up for when there's n occasional drunk idiot in there because it's open 24/7 and is right by AU. The portions are big, they even give you a giant cup of water with plenty of ice to wash down your meal. The only problem is that it's a little expensive and if you eat here frequently the cost can add up. However being a daily patron it's hard to resist starting your day off right with a nice big breakfast. Perfect place for a weightlifter as it's always open and serves eggs, veggies, all kinds of meats and quick carbs if you're in the mood. Love this place after a good workout. FREAKIN AWESOME! When we walked in we were a little uncertain - it's kinda small and you know in the corner. BUT WOW! The people there were amazing! We sat inside at the diner bar, and Osman cooked right in front of us. I told him I trust his judgement on my veggie and steak omelet and the guy went out of his way to make it perfect! My fiance who's from Texas ordered a Country Fried Steak with eggs and he said it was better than anything he'd had in Texas. I tasted it too and it just melted in your mouth. Since I was a sophomore in high school in 2004, I've been eating at Steak and Egg in Tenleytown. I absolutely love this place. I've driven from northern Virginia and southern Maryland late night just to eat here. Food is great. Staff is great. No matter what time of day/night. TERRIBLE! Was EXTREMELY disappointed the last visit I had here...... Told there was a 30 min wait along w/ 5 other folks on a Saturday morning. Thats fine, we were all told by the host(who also tells us hes tired & had worked a 12 hr shift) takeout would be faster & received menus-cool. Until 5 mins later we see folks who were told to wait or get takeout like us, w/ their menus, sitting down inside & ordering. We see signs that say- once u get takeout uve gotta go, cool.People are leaving- more seating is available. My BF & I ask a waitress if we can be seated after explaining the situation to her as well as offering to purchase drinks & such & tip of course. We are seated. But the host didnt like it AT ALL. He proceeds to walk over w/ hunched shoulders & a squinted face asking whats going on. We explain, he says she shouldnt have done that shes new. I explain we are willing to pay for the service- we already paid 40 freakin dollars for carryout breakfast food that I honestly couldve made better- we just came for the atmosphere & convenience. He flags every waitress down & interrogates them. He then comes back to our table & says fine, but we will have to pack up our plates && leave if more customers arrive........................................WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!! My BF almost flips tf off- I stop it & simply conclude we will never be returning after we finish our 60 dollar -including the tip- meal. How dare you. Hospitable much? I understand u get a bunch of drunk college kids who stiff u- but never in my life have I been spoken to so rudely by someone Im paying.I dont care how long your shift was- it was disgusting. I only come there for the funnel cake sticks which seem highly overrated once u eat them everytime weirdly.....My bf says he wont miss it because he almost gags everytime he watches them slapping hash & other foods on the stove w/ no gloves. We went here on the recommendation of a friend of our daughter's, a native Washingtonian who knows all the great places in and around DC, both high and low. This is easily the best breakfast spot in the city!! steak n egg has a variety of foods to choose from and they are all great. this is my favorite place to eat in the city just because their food is exceptional. there are never many workers inside of this place but they always work well and efficiently, I always receive my food in a timely manner that's another reason why I love this place. the scenery of this place isn't the best, its actually pretty bad looking but the food definitely makes up for everything that the venue lacks in appearance. The best part about this place is the food being great in the breakfast area and also the lunch area. they every have milkshakes and desserts here that are great as well, you just cant miss when you come to eat here they hit home with every dish that they prepare and serve, I have never been here and left and I wasn't satisfied. The prices here aren't too bad I cant complain much about prices here because it is worth every single penny. the only thing I don't like is that it is very small and most times its very crowded and you have to wait extended periods of time to be seated, but other than that there is nothing that I can complain about with this particular establishment. read more

Service was fast but never offered a coffee refill, never checked on us and gave our check to the wrong table, then argued with us about it. My husband and I were out for a long walk today, Sunday. We headed up Wisconsin Ave to another place we'd thought of, but it was stuffy and they didn't have outdoor seating. We were a bit "sticky" from walking over 5 miles. We had passed Steak and Egg Kitchen, so we headed back and got a table outside under the umbrellas. There was a nice breeze and it was perfect!! The staff is friendly. We got drinks and looked over the menu. I got the Mexican Breakfast......hashbrowns with onions, chili, cheese and fried eggs. I chose biscuits instead of toast. GLAD I DID.....the biscuits were cut in half, buttered and then grilled on the flat top. Not your typical southern biscuit, but really good. My husband had the corned beef hash and wheat toast. He wasn't going to get hashbrowns, but they came with it. He ate them all. This is a dive sort of place. Nothing fancy. Just really good. Nice people. The trip to the restrooms in the back is a bit "interesting". They could do a little tidying to make it look better back there. read more

Four of us had a very good breakfast this morning. Outdoor seating was very nice, service was good. The steak and eggs were VERY good as well as the scrambled eggs and bacon. A bit disappointed in the eggs over medium hard as they arrived way runny....a pet peeve of mine...but eggs should be prepared the way you order them, not the way the cook wants to prepare them. Also, the sausage is a sausage pattie as opposed to breakfast links, which I find to be much more flavorful. The fact that they actually have bread/potatoes substitutes on their menu was a HUGE plus. As carb avoiders we were happy to see this accommodation printed on the menu, so Kudo's for recognizing that there are those of us who are trying to be carbs-smart. Would definitely go back. Too bad they don't have more room and you are pretty much limited to outdoor seating as there are only 12 seating spots at the counter indoors. read more

Possibly the worst diner I've ever visited. My husband and I thought we'd try it one very hot weekend morning. Since we walked from Friendship Heights, we stopped and got a couple of small bottles of water to cool off. We found stools at the counter inside (a miracle since there are only about six of them - maybe eight), and the waitress promptly said "Oh, you brought your own water! Good - you won't need anything to drink then!". Even though we explained that we would actually like two glasses of water, she never did bring us any after multiple requests (we would have like to have our water for the walk home, but apparently that was too much of a stretch of the imagination!). Our food took close to an hour to get (how hard is it to make breakfast?), and we only ordered eggs, toast, bacon and my husband had a waffle. All completely tasteless and greasy. Worst food ever, worst service ever, worst tip ever (nothing!!!). As mentioned, you must have to be completey drunk off your a** to enjoy anything this place has to offer!! Will never go back and will never recommend it to anyone else. Would give it negative stars if it was possible! read more
