Worst managed restaurant ever. We waited 10 minutes- with 3 kids- to be seated. There was no one at the register to check people out. There was a line 4 parties deep while we waited. I just went to pick up my food I ordered online. When I walked into the place, there was only one other couple in the restaurant. It looked like the walking dead in there. There were not enough workers and they could not move fast enough if they were trying to escape a fire. Of course they totally messed up my order and when I tried to call the store no one would pick up. I tried calling for over an hour. This store is so crappy and low quality. I understand if you get busy and can't get to us right away, but at least acknowledge the customer. Not only that but we ordered a milkshake and it sat in the window for 10 minutes. I got the Portobello and Swiss burger. Actually I always get the portobello and swiss burger. It's that good. In my opinion the fries are just okay and the shakes are pretty good. The shakes are really thick so you either need to let them sit for a bit before attempting to drink it or risk an aneurysm trying to suck it through the straw right away. If you go through the drive thru be prepared to wait for your food. The burgers are made to order, it's worth the wait. By the time I get home the juice is always soaked through the bottom bun. So I suggest flipping it over and eating it upside down while keeping your elbows way out to the sides or the juice is gonna run all down your arms. The prices are higher than most fast food places but still reasonable, and you can taste the difference in the burgers for sure. read more

You would think with the amount of customers that turn away due to the wait, having an extra person or two on staff would be offset with the additional revenue gained. I live near the location and consistently see cars leaving the drive thru line. They must be doing fine, but from a business perspective this location could be doing so much better. Update 3: so today (March 29th, 2021) around 3:35 pm I witnessed food get taken back through the drive through window... it was the far right in front of me and I'm afraid it's mine. It wasn't the usual kid working there it was an older guy I believe. I thought restaurants weren't allowed to do this. Not only this but for the first time in months my food was terrible (both sets of fries were cold, burger was made horribly I literally wanted to gag and Steak 'n Shake is my favorite burger place in the world. I don't have a big complaint about the food. The French fries are thin and crispy which is what I like. We were there just before 1 PM and it was crowded. But that's no excuse for the very slow service. We were seated and then nothing. My husband saw a server clearing the booth behind us and asked him if he was our server. Beyond the worst store to ever eat at. Upon going inside to order food I proceeded to wash the high chair for my daughters safety through Covid. I was then yelled at by their manager SAM who told me I wasn't allowed to wash it and when I asked he said no and deliberately kept yelling and saying we wasn't able to do that. I'm a huge fan of Steak 'n Shake, but we really didn't plan on being here this long. While waiting for our orders to arrive, we witnessed several groups of would-be customers walk in, seat themselves, and subsequently walk out. (Some were never acknowledged.) Food was perfect, There weren't any healthy choices on the menu at all, However this is not one of your goals if you are going to this place to begin with. Steak and shake has become my late night choice for eating. I don't mean for dinner at 8pm. I mean when you just need a little snack after a nite at the casino or after the late movie. I mean 2am. I wish there were more places available at that hour. I'm a night owl and stay up late and I am always looking for a nitespot that compliments my weird hours. At 2am it's only Denny's, Ihop, and Steak n Shake. The food is by no means great, but at 2am it is a lot better than the other offerings in the area. A double Steakburger with thin fries and a diet coke is my standby. Sometimes a deluxe chili or an occasional Chicago steakdog. The shakes, however, are great and are worth the price of admission on their own! The staff is courteous and every once in a while you can get an enthusiastic server who will make your visit enjoyable. There actually have been times that I have been there when they really did get the order correct! The clientele during the late night hours are mostly young people who can be loud, obnoxious and a lot of fun to watch. Their exuberance is infectious. It is my favorite hamburger joint. I started eating at Steak n Shakes when I moved to Indiana in 1970. Ate there every day I had College classes for 5 years. I thoroughly enjoy their steakburgers and fries. And every once in a while I have their baked beans, always a treat, I really like them. Anyway, it got to the point where we wanted to walk, and I started counting to 60. At 30, a guy at the counter saw my death glare and called someone over. No idea who he was, probably the owner. From then on, everything was great. Our server, I think his name was Mike, was attentive, polite, helpful and readily available. Drinks were kept filled, plates were cleared, napkins and straws were brought. Just very professional. When my toddler's hot dog came out somewhat charred, he had the kitchen cook a fresh one. Our server forgot to ring in our order. Had to get a manager to get drinks. The whole thing took an hour and a half. The manager said it was because 5 people called out and he was a shift manager doing the best he can. I told him to hire more people and he said that wasn't his job.
