Holy cow this place was phenominal. I've been here before last time I was in town. Its just what I'd imagine an American burger place to be. I got the frisco grilled cheese thingy. The burger was hot and they used so much butter on the bread to make it crispy, it was heaven! That frisco sauce is kinda like Big Mac sauce but mixed with ketchup probably. This location seems to always have a long wait and slow service (or maybe it's me only stopping in when a huge event is happening in town). I had never seen a White Castle in my life prior to coming to Indy. Thought to myself I gotta try that place for sure just to say I did. We stopped by that area late at night on a either Sunday or Saturday night while in Indy over the weekend to watch the Niner game. When I got to the window they had a sign there that said they were temporarily closed. I was disappointed. I then headed back to the Hyatt where we stayed, on the way I saw Steak n Shake was still open, I had walked by it a bunch of different times during the weekend. So I decided to stop in and take a look. They had a small line, then I got to order. I was shocked at how cheap all the menu was, it was like a little diner, with fast food prices. I'm only giving this a two star because the cashier was nice and they have good milk shake, other than that the quality of the food is horrid. My food didn't come out presentable at all; it was all slapped together and the burger was slanted. The burger, hotdog and grill cheese tasted very oily, the Parmesan cheese French fries was OVERLY SALTED; it was so salty that one fry required drinking Half a bottle of water. Even though the food price was affordable, but at least make it decent. Once I walked into steak & shake, it had a very bad oder that made me want to leave right away, but since it was my first time at steak and shake, I decided to give it a try. The shakes are good but not great. I think they use soft serve instead of actual ice cream. The two young ladies taking care of business definitely warrant an extra star. This Steak & Shake has been staring me down ever since I arrived in town. I finally caved and dropped in here today for an early lunch. As far as fast food goes it is definitely a step above the norm, and the retro malt shop decor and bowtied waitresses help bring a fun kitschy style to it. Had a nice thick vanilla shake to go along with my Original Double Steakburger with cheese and thick crispy fries. Burger was topped with lettuce, tomatoes, pickle slices, and mustard relish. Was pretty good, and not bad for a total meal under $10! Not the highest quality food, but for the price it was ok. Table service was friendly and quick. As this is a big midwestern mainstay I figured I would try it out at least once. Would definitely come back if just for a shake as they are thick, huge, and flavorful. Came to Indianapolis for a volley ball tournament, got here around 10pm, we waited over an hour for our food, then once we got it, food was cold. Place had trash on the floors and water all over like a trashy bar bathroom. I knew we shouldn't have went there, I hate Steak 'n Shake they service is the worst, people just started to walk out it took so long. Next time you're better off staying at hotel and eating vending machine snacks and drinking water from your hotel sink. I love Steak and Shake! I'm a regular when I am in the downtown area, and try to go at not so busy times since the order/pick up window is now open. I miss sitting inside and enjoying the crowds. It can get busy, and the floors dirty from all the traffic, but my food has always been wonderful. The bathroom could get interesting, but if I bought it to managements attention it was promptly taken care of. Coming here not knowing what to expect, I was pleasantly surprised. Everything here is dirt cheap. I got a grilled chicken chipotle burger and my boyfriend tried out their western burger and both are delicious. Be noted these burgers are not gourmet style or huge. Nor do they give you a ton of bacons or quality burger meat. This is more like a Burger King type of Burger joint for me but better. Their shakes are extremely thick and milky. They use real fruit inside at a whopping $3.5 dollars! I am glad I came in here to enjoy a quick and delicious bite. read more

We were thinking about ordering a shake after we already got our meal but she put the check down before we could ask. When she got to us she skipped the page on the credit card reader to leave a tip in order to save time. She didn't say anything and moved right to the next customer. Came here during a convention with almost 70,000 people which are primarily teenagers. The place was always packed whenever we walked by. When we finally decided to try it the service was great. Our food came out fast and was delicious. I definitely ordered way to much. But that Nutella shake was worth it. But this server was a trip in how rude she was, I get that it was busy, but she gave attitude when i came in with my son in a stroller, she even asked if we needed to bring him in, in that thing. Well seeing how I was in Indy for a convention and didn't have a car, walking from the Sheraton to the Lucas Oil Stadium. I need a stroller to walk my son the 3 miles we walked daily. So we sit down, my mom orders and I order a shake. She gives me attitude because I didn't order food. Ummm I'm ordering something. So my mom's food comes, my son is having some of grandma's fries and of course he drops some food. I always pick up a lot of the food and always leave $5 over 15% to 20% for the mess he leaves behind. I get it's annoying and I try to prevent it. But the distain the server showed was just astonishing. So 15 minutes after my food arrives, I get my m and m milk shake. Or should I saw vanilla shake with a handful of m and m's. So as we are checking out this server goes up to the waiting line and said, " alright which one of you was next. Then a Hispanic group raises their hand and she (a white server) says, "well rapido let's go get this done!" Listen, you work at a steak in shake in a convention city. They're kind enough to list the calorie count on the menu, too :-) They even have a middle-of-the-day happy hour where shakes are 50% off! Well, this is the worst store I've been to in this chain. Tonight ordering 5 to go meals, we all got shakes, and it took (with 16 customers in the restaurant total (including us 5). Our milkshakes took 30 minutes, and our food 25-ish. My milkshake was a strawberry extra thick. When it came out, it was not think and tastes like they "malted" it. It is not tasty. My meal is a $4 double steak burger with fries, applesauce, and a cookie. The budget was supposed to be lettuce & tomato only, and it's got some orange sauce on it, and the cookie is nowhere to be found. This place is supposed to be good, I mean, the headquarters is down the street, and yet they can't get basic orders together. I walked back to my hotel, and didn't ask the others if their meals were correct. $10 to a donut says theirs were also messed up. There were 3 other customers in the 30 minutes I waited having problems with either the order, or the service, (3 guys walked out after a few Minutes sitting down- never having been helped). I'm not sure what the problem is there, but it's certainly lacking in some management, because there are too many situations where not enough training was dispatched, and the customer service is a fail. Late night and tired. This place was open and close to the hotel. I also liked Freddy's from Oklahoma so I decided to try it. I ordered the normal double steak burger and a mint Oreo milkshake. Here's how it went: The Good: - Open late, midnight, but they don't kick you out the. I showed up at 11:50 and they seated me and took my order in a timely manner - Good service even though I could see the staff was tired and ready to go home - Fresh food, no artificial stuff, hand made everything - Feels like a 50's diner - Burger tasted good. Good pickles. Fresh green leaf lettuce - Seasoning on the table adds good flavor to the fries, but it is a little too salty - Shake tasted pretty good though not overly special The Not So Good: - Seemed a little dirty due to the floor - Fries are thin and mostly crispy but need flavor - A double burger gives you about the same amount of meat as a single in just about any other burger place, so you really need to get a double - Meat was so greasy that the bottom bun was getting soggy Bottom line: not a bad place. Good if you want something fast and not the other fast food burger chains. Still, if I had a Freddy's around I'd go there first. read more

We saw several negative reviews about this restaurant and were hesitant to try it. But... we were in a little bit of a time crunch and decided to give it a whirl. We dropped in right in the middle of the dinner rush and ordered 3 kids meals. It was quickly obvious this place was not immune to the lack of employees that's swept the country. After waiting 15 minutes for our order and seeing several orders placed after ours picked up, I asked a lady a the counter about order 164. She hurriedly looked at the grill screen and said there were 4 orders still ahead of us. Within 5 minutes and without making a public scene about our delay, we were at our table scarfing down the burgers. That same lady at the pick up counter later came by our table, introduced herself as the general manager, apologized for our wait and handed me a paper napkin with a hand-written note for 3 free burgers. We stopped in the next day (again at dinner time) and she personally placed the free order. At lunch and dinner time, this place is hopping. Staff are focused on getting orders out and there aren't a lot of smiling faces working there. The point of this saga is that the GM went out of her way, without prompting, to address a visit that would have otherwise never gotten a Yelp review. We'll be back next in town at the convention center in a few months and will likely be coming back - largely due to the GM's actions. read more

Massive props to the people who work here for dealing with all the con-goers from GenCon. Seriously. The wait for a table sometimes would go for about 30-40 min and takeout was about 10-15 min wait. I would see people get agitated about the wait times.... while surrounded by 50 other people (um, hello! Don't wanna wait, go somewhere else. Duh!). The servers here definitely worked very hard and had to deal with a lot of crap. This was the go-to place for many people during the con because it's cheap, down the street, and it's 24/7. Food is what I would expect from Steak n Shake. The quality didn't suffer despite the uptick in customers. Granted, Steak n Shake isn't what I exactly go to for quality, I just want a cheap burger and a milkshake.
