However, there is a woman that comes by to help people enter their orders, so it's similar to having someone taking your order at the counter. The restaurant was pretty clean. This was my 1st visit to a Steak n' Shake. My burger, tater tots and shake were fantastic!

This used to be my favorite late night/early morning place. The new hours have nipped that in the bud. The food is still on par, though.

I haven't been to steak 'n shake in a while but decided to stop it today, and it was an utter disappointment. Apparently they fired most of their wait staff and now you have to place your own order on a kiosk. Although I'm a 40-year vegetarian, I can usually find some products that don't violate my ethics, but they have proudly proclaimed that their french fries are cooked with beef tallow, which just makes my stomach turn, and I am now no longer going to steak 'n shake, because the limited possibilities I had, have now been destroyed. Why cook with dead animal fat, while proudly broadcasting it, when you could have simply cooked with non-animal oils and nobody was complaining. read more

Thee worse experience for my first time here. The drive thru person was extremely rude. She had an attitude for no reason while I was ordering, when I asked if I could order a milkshake instead of a regular drink she just kept asking what I want to drink. As I kept asking my question because I thought she didn't hear me, she finally says yes, that she can't customize anything because it's only one size, and what do I want. So then when I get to the window and the payment is done, I get my food but there stuff missing so I wait, then she says, "okay, you got everything l" but my cheese fries are missing so she gives me cheese, but my fries are also missing and when I tell her that after she proceeds to tell me that they are in my bag which are not, she has yet another attitude and she gives me the fries. This restaurant has very few staff and is attempting to automate everything. They don't take cash and you have to order from a kiosk. You even have to use a QR code to get your soda. My order number was 140 and when they got to 145 I tried to find someone to tell me what was going on. I finally got someone who initially told me that the other orders behind me were all drink orders. Then a guy walked up who is order 139 with the same issue. Their next response was to suggest that maybe we hadn't picked up our orders. Then they agreed to go back and check in the kitchen. After a while, they came back and said they would have to remake our orders. It was all very frustrating. The only reason I'm giving it two stars is because when I did get my food, because they had to remake it, it was very hot. After traveling for over eight hours, we stopped for a meal and were very unimpressed. The service counter was dirty, there were no straws, and the restaurant was not clean. The workers were slow to get the meal together despite having several people working in the kitchen. All orders were taken on a kiosk so that should have been one more person working in the kitchen. I must always come at the wrong time because all these complaints about service have never been a problem for me. It is a sit down burger joint that can be busy at times. Don't come at peak times or join the late night crowd and you should be okay. At least you get to sit down and wait rather than stand in line and wait. The draw for me is the $5.99 burger and shake meal coupon included in those coupons stuffed in the paper or in the mail. I get a double steak burger, fries, a second side (usually chili) and a good old thick milkshake. A deal that can't be beat. The burger patties are smashed thin on the flat top and my all the way burger always tastes like the delicious drugstore grill burger taste I have loved since my childhood. The fries are as thin as those crunchy potato sticks they sell in a can in the grocery store, but softer. The chili is a welcome side when the weather cools. This time I tried the Prime Steakburger they have been promoting in ads on tv and I think I still prefer their smashed flat patties to this bigger and thicker burger. Have to order from a kiosk now, had to try two, was using gift cards, the machines wouldn't read the brand new gift cards, then when one finally did and I was scanning the second card for remaking balance and the kiosk cancelled our order! Asked for help and was told there was no order placed, the girl didn't listen to us, then a manager came over, said she would take our order even though she had such a hatful look on her face about doing her job. At that point we were afraid to order cause we feared they would mess with our food. We asked her to check the balance in the gift card which she reluctantly did, we confirmed out card still had the correct balance and left. SLOW SERVICE, MISSING ITEMS, DIRTY BATHROOM. We came in shortly after 1 PM after driving 50 miles (we live very rurally). We had one hour to eat before a doctor's appointment. The waitress asked for our drink orders. Fifteen minutes later, she came back to take our orders but still had not brought the drinks. We gave her our order, including "no fries".(See picture.) I checked my watch: 1:25 PM. See the slip below: she put in our order at 1:32. At 1:52, we just could not wait any more. We threatened to leave, but they quickly bagged our order. We paid and left. I worried about my cole slaw being left in the car, and grabbed the bag at the dr's office. That is when I discovered that there was no dressing for my husband's salad, no cole slaw, and no cookie. I had also ordered a milkshake and it wasn't even listed on the slip. I tried to complain to the manager in the three minutes I had left before we had to leave. He came out of his office woth an attitude, sneered at me, and said, "Your order was placed at 1:32 and you have your food. What are you complaining about?" I don't normally leave reviews for chain restaurants. I feel like most people know what to expect at a chain restaurant and don't need ratings. Today that changes. This was one of the worst experiences I've ever had in a food setting. Firstly we sit down to place our order and we notice a server struggling to clear a table. That's not a problem, having waited tables I know how much trouble getting plates to stack can be. The problem was that as this server is struggling, the manager walked right through and failed to assist. In fact, not only did the manager not assist but proceeded to explain to the server that if she dropped the plates they would take it out of her paycheck. That's a fine example of very poor leadership and alone would warrant this review. I ordered the cajun burger and upgraded my fries to the cajun fries for $0.29 more. If I had known that all cajun meant was they sprinkled cajun seasoning on the fries (which was freely available on the table) I would not have upgraded. To make matters worse, my fries were brought out with no seasoning at all and a shaker of the same seasoning on the tables was brought out to make my fries "cajun". Another member of our group ordered a mushroom swiss burger only to be told (a half hour after we ordered) that they were out of mushrooms. There also had to be multiple table visits to clarify shake orders. Our server was on his first day out of training and had no support. We watched several people wait to be seated before either seating themselves or leaving. I had not been to a Steak n Shake in about 13 years and I remembered such wonderful times and meals but now I question those memories because this experience has placed SnS on my "do not visit" list. read more

I'm not big on eating burgers from anyplace if you know what I mean. Choices from McDonald's to Wendy's gets redundant when it comes from city to city. However, the day before my birthday I decided to venture and see what the small town of Tallahassee had to offer and Steak N Shake jumped out at me. If you didn't know Steak N Shake is known for its traditional burger setting and its variety of milkshakes. I decided to come here for the breakfast. The pancakes at this place are literally to die for. Three big stakes of regular, banana, or chocolate chip, I can't help but indulge every once in a while. As I sat at the bar station (not actual bar), the server Shiyandra greeted me with a warm smile and a genuine desire to be of service. I went ahead and asked for the Royal Steakburger ( Double Steakburger™ with our NEW thicker slice of American cheese, NEW ultra premium hardwood-smoked bacon, lettuce, vine-ripened tomato, and mayonnaise -- topped with a fried egg) and with three banana pancakes on the side. Boy was the meal and service magnifique. The manager Ashlea came by and asked how everything was and of course I couldn't help myself and compliment the staff and chef. I also appreciated the fact she took the time to ask how my experience was. I have been to a variety of fast food type of restaurants and it's on rare occasion I get asked how everything. This made me feel very special. Furthermore, Ashlea shared their values of making every guest feel as if you are welcoming them into your home. My heart was truly touched by this statement. I also enjoyed listening about Steak N Shake's effort to give back to the local community in anyway possible. When a restaurant does the best it can to deliver exceptional service along with a good reason to be successful deserves 5 stars. I highly recommend you trying it for yourself. Don't be fooled by the ad! The advertisement says breakfast begins at 2 a.m. So we got up and went to have breakfast at 2:30. They say that we used to do that but we don't anymore breakfast is not until 6. It's funny they wouldn't serve breakfast, as the restaurant was empty. We won't be back. I hate false advertising! In brief Nothing personal but I was not aware Steak 'n Shake was undergoing new management and policies at store No. 355, according to my receipt, I tried being loyal as a long-term, occasional customer to steak n shake for many years. I was anticipating on breakfast, but to my discovery there was none so i tried to decide on lunch around 10am when they opened and ordered the single steak n cheese bacon burger. the cashier asked me what all I want on it. I stated "Everything that comes on it and whatever I don't want I will just take off to avoid offending anyone." My statement was made according to the menu. To my knowledge and experiences everything on it means all the ingredients listed in the menu from which I ordered. When I received my meal I checked it and to my disappointment there was an ingredient not listed on the menu on the sandwich. I told the cashier I did not expect or want mustard to be on the sandwich. I then asked to have a new bread bun and lettuce leaf to try and solve the problem. At this point is when she decides to tell me they haven't updated there menus. I should have been told that prior to me ordering or before closing the check to eliminate and prevent miscommunications. The cashier stated she will remake it. I said again I wanted everything on it except for the mustard and she walked off as I was talking to her and ignored my request. So I repeated myself to the cook because I heard her tell him to remake it and put everything on the side. So I stated I want it made fully and if I cant have it made the way I want it then I can just get a refund. The cashier refused to give me a refund and threatened to call the police. A call was made so I waited for the police to arrive and stayed at the scene of incident. I asked for the burger that was disposed so I could better explain myself. I just wanted a burger with no mustard. I could have went to Walmart next door to buy all the ingredients to make it myself a sandwich or somewhere else to waste $5. if that was the case and came out with a better deal and day. The condiments once mixed or spilled cant be separated. So to prevent food poison and offending anyone and leaving unhappy I simply wanted my food made how I ordered it. That is the whole purpose of me "purchasing" a sandwich. Outside of the service, she did not wash her hands thoroughly when leaving the cash register when making my food and i wasn't until the police arrived when she put the hair net on. I like their food but this location has have to have the slowest moving employees known to man. It took 20 mins to sit me and 10 more minutes to take a drink order with a completely empty restaurant. At the same time, although they had no customers and the drive thru was not open, 75% of the tables were piled up with plates of food. My milkshake took forever to come out because they didn't have a "shake" person and the seevers kept putting off making it hoping another one would do the extra work. Steak-N-Shake is something of a revelation for me. Tallahassee is the first city I've lived in where one is located. They are open 24 hours and have incredibly reasonable prices given how delicious their burgers and fries are. If you eat in, you are treated to a sort of "fast casual" sit-down hybrid where you are waited on but it's still essentially fast food. I usually go through the drive-thru, and while it's not as fast as McDonald's, it is definitely worth the wait. I don't feel a great need to spend much time talking about the food. Pick a burger that sounds good to you, and it's hard to go wrong. My favorite thing about Steak N Shake is probably the fact that they normally have a selection of combos (without drinks, perfect for taking home!) for just $3.99. I do not know of a better burger deal than a triple steakburger and fry for that price. read more

Stopped on our way through town. Dirty nasty bathrooms. Had to wipe our own seats off - when we had asked for the bench to be wiped we were handed napkins and encouraged to do it ourselves!! Waiter was rude and brusque. Milkshakes took 25 minutes to bring out and half the ordered food another 5 minutes after that. The other half took an additional 10 minutes. Fries were cold by then. Didn't want to risk asking for ketchup as it may not have arrived before we had eaten everything. Will not be back and neither will anyone else we travel with. read more
