Steak-N-Shake is something of a revelation for me. Tallahassee is the first city I've lived in where one is located. They are open 24 hours and have incredibly reasonable prices given how delicious their burgers and fries are. If you eat in, you are treated to a sort of "fast casual" sit-down hybrid where you are waited on but it's still essentially fast food. I usually go through the drive-thru, and while it's not as fast as McDonald's, it is definitely worth the wait. I don't feel a great need to spend much time talking about the food. Pick a burger that sounds good to you, and it's hard to go wrong. My favorite thing about Steak N Shake is probably the fact that they normally have a selection of combos (without drinks, perfect for taking home!) for just $3.99. I do not know of a better burger deal than a triple steakburger and fry for that price. read more

I love going to Steak N Shake. However this location did not staff enough employees to service the customers. We waited 35 minutes before receiving our food. There were 3 waitresses; 1 was working very hard while the other 2 were not. The place seemed popular however due to the amount of people coming in several groups left because they were not waited on. Stopped on our way through town. Dirty nasty bathrooms. Had to wipe our own seats off - when we had asked for the bench to be wiped we were handed napkins and encouraged to do it ourselves!! Waiter was rude and brusque. Milkshakes took 25 minutes to bring out and half the ordered food another 5 minutes after that. The other half took an additional 10 minutes. Fries were cold by then. Didn't want to risk asking for ketchup as it may not have arrived before we had eaten everything. Will not be back and neither will anyone else we travel with. read more

First, the drains need cleaning. That's the horrible odor you smell upon entering. Service was extremely slow. Computer system crashed which threw employees off their game. After 45 minutes, lost my cool when the server brought food that I had noticed sitting in the window. We dashed in for an order to go. 4 items for 4 dollars. Waited 25 minutes did not receive 2 of 4 items. No ketchup or packets of any kind, and no napkins. Lots of employees but not a lot getting done. What we got was good, but will never go back. read more

Normally this is a good restaurant but this location needs a lot of help. First of all, the server was terrible. Almost as if she was untrained. We kept having to ask for things that we ordered multiple times before we got them. My daughter ordered a patty melt and it only had one patty. The server argued with her then stormed off. The manager came out and said it had two patties because she made it then brought her another one. Wasn't any better. We are done! My wife's brother owns 2 steaks n shakes and they are nothing like this. This store needs retraining from the management down. read more

This has to be the worse experience I have ever had at a Steak 'n Shake. The server sat us and did not come back for at least 15 minutes before taking our drink orders. It took another 10 minutes for her to bring back the five waters. The food took forever and the waitress never came back after dropping off the food. We need refills on drinks and even had to ask another waitress to give us our check so we could check out. The place was not busy. All the wait staff was standing around just talking. read more

The reason to go to any Steak n Shake is the steak burgers and the milk shakes. The place isn't named Steak n Shake for nothin'. You have to get a least a double steak burger because the patties are a little thin, but they're very tasty. We eat here on a fairly regular basis. The service is generally good, but once in a while you'll get a server lemon. The good thing is that bad servers do seem to disappear pretty quickly. Food delivery can be a little slow, but the steak burgers are cooked to order, so if you're in a hurry for a burger, try one of the fast food joints. We generally get the Steak N Shake meal which includes a double steak burger, two sides, and a shake. They have a couple of unique sides such as cottage cheese with a pineapple slice and mandarin oranges if you're not in the mood for fries. They also have a nice side salad that has a variety of toppings with a pretty good selection of dressings available. If you want to bulk up the meal try chili as one of your sides. Unless you just have to have it, skip the cheese on the burger - it is a pricy option and if you get everything else on the burger, the cheese kind of gets lost among the other ingredients anyway. If you need a fix of cheese, try adding a side of cheese sauce for your fries. I like a plain chocolate or vanilla shake, but there a many different kinds of shakes available with new ones coming and going all the time. In summary, great food, spotty but more often than not good service, a little slow on food delivery, but not interminable. read more

Slam packed and under staffed. Long wait, and no silver wear or napkins were given to us at all. One staff member was mean to another and made her blush, it was awkward. My partners cup was dirty on the inside. One staff member was picking up the slack and he only had one available hand. read more

Absolutely the worst steak and shake in the US! Usually we love eating Steak and Shake. Service was HORRIBLE. Waited over an hour for our food. Everyone in the place was waiting just as long. Workers standing around everywhere. Tables dirty everywhere. There was even an employee sitting at the counter playing on her phone when this was happening. Obviously, you do not go to steak and shake expecting fine dining or 5 star service but this was just pitiful. Definitely needs some new management and structure. Stopped to eat during a long road trip. Took over 15 minutes to be seated. I agree with other posters about the speed, or lack there-of. I went to the drive thru today at lunch, knowing full well I would be in line for a while, and boy was I! Every spot in the lot was full except for one space, and there were 7 cars ahead of me. I had ordered the double cheeseburger, well done, everything on it, extra pickle please, and a side of fries. This meal s one of about 6 that are $4! A deal!!! After and extremely long wait, I managed to ask for salt and ketchup, and this was greeted with the expected eye roll from our next generation of workers! I was given my stuffed bag and was lucky enough to find a space in the back to have an in car picnic. Lucky too, because if I had waited any longer the fries would have been cold, thererfore making me wonder how hot they really were since all I did was drive around the building. Those not familiar with Steak and Shake fries, be warned, they are skinny and do not hold heat!!! My burger was cooked was, crispy edges the way I like it!!! Two large crisp leaves of romaine, a pretty nice red slice of tomato, couple rings of sweet onion and a layer of their famous long pickle slices......devour it!!!! The burger was up to standard, and went beyond!! Fries were fries, hot would have been nice. Service, well, slow at best. The service there I had was horrible. I rode there on a full tank of gas and ended up having to get gas on the leave. that's how long the wait was. Steak n' Shake has always been one of our favorite places to stop and eat and we are rarely disappointed, but this Steak n' Shake was extremely different. Our experience began by walking in and being ignored by several different staff. Once asked by the manager, a waitress picked up menus, set them on a table and walked away all without saying a word to us or coming to greet us.
