The croissant breakfast sandwich was really light and flakey and the eggs were fluffy and perfectly cooked. Drove by and saw the cute black and white decor. The coffee is good but other than that stafff is super slow and tbey couldn't care less if you tell them you've been waiting 40+ minutes for your order. They will just cont to take their time, talk, look at each other's phone and laugh while you stand at the counter watching. Super rude. They have no sense of urgency. No apology when tbey handed us our food. Another lady waited 25 min just get one pastry. And this is after the morning rush, and there's few customers in the shop. Overall, terrible service. Has the local favorite burrito and it was good. Cold chai latte was decent but from a powder which are never a good as liquid concentrates in my experience. We sat at a Lovely table in the front window and weren't rushed out at all. My friend asked for a mug to drink her coffee there and looking around not one other person had a reusable mug for there "here" coffee. Found this place on yelp. Disappointed that they do NOT honor the check-in deal (was told they haven't honored it in years). None of the drinks have descriptions on yelp, online or in-store. I'm all for visiting local coffee shops especially when traveling. Today was no exception. We travel to Pismo beach many times and passed this location. We stopped in today to get an ice coffee before we hit the road. It was about 6:45 in the morning on a Sunday when I arrived. The friendly cashiers welcomed me into the location and asked what they could get me. They accommodated my request for an iced coffee with sugar free vanilla. I added some half-and-half but after tasting the iced coffee I was so impressed with the flavor it made me think about all the other places I have had bad iced coffee from major chains. They were also baked goods that looked fresh but I did not have any. Inside there's plenty of seating and outside there are quite a few tables as well there is parking directly on the street which seems easy enough, but I am not sure if there's a lot in the back. I can't wait to return and come back to this coffee place because it truly is a gym in Pismo Beach. read more

I love this place! We came from out of town for my friend's birthday and were looking for a coffee shop on Sunday afternoon. Somehow we passed by this place and kept walking but finally found it 4 mins before they were about to close. We asked them if they were still open and Dillion greeted us with a smile! Grace made us delicious lattes and even gave my friend a free one since it was her birthday. These days this kind of customer service is rare. They even helped another person after us even though they were technically closed We returned the next day and Grace was there to help us again. I loved my decaf vanilla Oatmilk latte. The customer service was horrible. We ordered an ice coffee and people where getting their drinks that ordered well after us. A customer came up and complained that his coffee wasn't a dark roast and the girl argued with him about it which in fact the other employee said yes it's not dark roast it'd hazelnut. I didn't want the same reaction so I drove to the next coffee spot and dumped mine. I am temperature sensitive and asked the cashier to steam in 5-10 degrees less hot. When the barista finished and set my $6 latte on the bar (because I tipped) I could tell by the look of it that it would be too hot. We are Chai Tea Latte snobs. We really enjoy a good Chai Tea Latte and seek them out often. The Steaming Bean, in our opinion, has the best in San Luis Obispo County and we've tried many. Prior to the pandemic we would routinely drive from San Luis Obispo to Shell Beach nearly every Sunday just to get a Chai. We would often fill up a 10-punch card every couple of months and enjoyed walking down to the beach and drinking our flavorful chai. Prior to the pandemic the "Bean" was getting a bit dirty and unkempt but we heard that new owners had bought the business. Although locals we asked said the Bean under new ownership was not that great we wanted to experience it for ourselves. When we walked in for the first time in more than a year we were pleasantly surprised that the store presented as clean, the tables were nicer and the merchandise display area looked tidy. We never minded that the Bean was higher priced than most places and we do our best to buy local and avoid the chain coffee places. We ordered two large Chai Tea Lattes, one with almond milk and the other with non-fat milk. Much to our surprise we were assessed an up charge of $1.25 each for "alternative milk." I've never understood this since when we go to the grocery store non-fat milk costs no more than whole milk, and almond milk was actually less expensive than regular milk the last time we shopped. Starbucks upcharges 60-cents for almond milk (which in itself is irritating) but $1.25 each? No thanks...I refuse to be gouged. Here's where business owners are stupid...for $2.50 the Steaming Bean just lost two really good and regular customers. There is no practical or justifiable reason to add $2.50 to two large Chai Tea Lattes when it costs the business no more for that "alternative" product. And, since when is non-fat milk an alternative milk? Sorry Bean. I can afford the $2.50 but will tell you how wrong that is by voting with my feet. By the way, the Chai Tea Latte was as good as ever. Too bad we'll never be back. read more

The vibes in here are weird. They take forever to make your food even when it's not crowded. The bagel sandwich I ordered was decent but I noticed the employee making my food was not wearing gloves. I know this is not uncommon, but she kept putting her hands under her shirt on her bare back to scratch it. Anyone working with food should have food safety training and should know how unsanitary it is to do this while handling someone else's food. I picked off most of the parts she touched after doing this, but I was not able to finish it. I went back today against my better judgement because I hoped that it was an isolated incident. There were 4 employees behind the counter laughing and while they looked at me, not one of them greeted me or acknowledged me. I waited at the counter and noticed one of the employees was putting the other in a giant trash bag. It's great that they have fun together, but could none of them do the bare minimum and just say "hi, I'll be right with you." Weird behavior. read more

The jury is out on this place. Visit #1 I had a breakfast burrito that was so yummy. The service was decent, but when we went back for visit #2 the breakfast burrito was just ok. I seriously think they left something out of the burrito (like maybe the sour cream that made it so creamy on day 1) and the burrito wasn't toasted as nicely (that made a difference). I'd go back and pay closer attention as to who is actually back there making my breakfast. That's the only difference I can come up with. read more

I am in love with the Steaming Bean. We were just visiting Shell Beach, but if I were a local, I would be here every morning. The atmosphere of the place is so inviting, like it's your best friend's beach house and they also happen to be baristas who can cook. My husband and I stopped by for breakfast before hitting up Central Coast Kayaks right next door for our kayaking expedition. We both got coffees, and we got a lemon blueberry muffin and split their breakfast burrito. I'm so glad we decided to split the burrito because it was absolutely HUGE! I couldn't believe how big it was, and it was loaded...Eggs, potato, bacon, avocado, basically anything you could ever want in a breakfast burrito. And, then they went the extra mile and grilled it on a panini press (OMG)! The blueberry lemon muffin was also very good (tasted like it was made fresh that day), and the coffee was excellent. This was recommended by our hotel manager. It's a quaint place located on the main street of Shell Beach. People are friendly and the atmosphere is great! There's ample seating inside and 2-3 tables outside that can accommodate 2-3 people each. Parking is street side but plentiful. The coffee is definitely way better than the chain stores like Starbucks and Peet's. My wife had the latte which she really enjoyed. I had the "nutty blend" and the "Kauai blend" both of which I enjoyed. There's a mixture of pastries and sandwiches available which I'm sure is also good (we didn't try any) or at least they looked and smelled really good! I recommend this place who wants some COFFEE other than Starbucks of Peet's. The reason for the 3-stars? The girl that took our order also prepared a bagel for someone else without washing her hands (she handled cash just before she prepared the bagel). I'm glad the coffee is self-serve and the person that made the latte was working that station only and not handling money. read more
