One of the hardest things to find is someone who can install and repair appliances that is reliable, does a good job, is trustworthy and communicates well. In the local area (I'm in western Nassau County), Steven's Appliance Repair is the only one I know that achieves all of these. I've learned over the years that installation services provided by companies that sell appliances a) try to do the fastest job possible (not the best job as they get paid by how many they do not how well they do them) and b) cannot do anything besides just plug in the appliance (if anything extra is needed, they will not or are not allowed to do it). Therefore, I prefer to hire someone to handle my appliance needs. I called about 10 different places - most were unavailable or unwilling to come to where I live. Steven's called me on the phone quickly and met me the same day. They clearly explained what I would need to complete the installation (including instructions for electrical work needed), purchased the necessary parts and within 2 days the job was all done. Steve is a hardworking, talented repairman, who isn't afraid to put a lot of elbow grease into a project, and genuinely cares about doing the right thing by his customers. He responds promptly to calls, and maximizes communication -- calling while he's on the way to make sure you're there, letting you know in advance what the price range likely will be, etc. We have used him twice, both times for 20-year-old Panasonic air conditioners. On the first one, it was the hottest day of the summer, of course, when the thing quit. Steve pulled the thing apart, showed me where the problem was, explained that repairing it might not be cost effective and that the repair might not hold for long. On that day, I was willing to take the risk because we just need the cooling. As it was, he worked for a couple hours in the brutal heat, fashioning a repair of the broken metalwork inside the air conditioner. It has run great ever since. On the other one, the fan died and I knew the part would be expensive, so I just bought a replacement new air conditioner and asked Steve to install it. Good guy that he is, he pulled the old one apart first to see if it could be cost-effectively repaired, telling me that if it was fixable I could save some money and return the new one. As it was, he pronounced it dead (frozen, rusted fan motor, an expensive part), but at least I knew I wasn't wasting money. His price to install was comparable to PC Richard, but he came right away after I bought the replacement, as opposed to waiting a week or more for the PC Richard installer. He's also the kind of person I am happy to pay. As to people saying that he has an attitude or something -- give me a break. He is a one-man operation, who has to do his own scheduling, accounting, everything. If he drives across Nassau County to an appointment and you're not home, that comes right out of his pocket. So I don't mind that he is very precise about the time window in which he is hoping to arrive, that he calls in advance to confirm that you're there before he comes to you, and that he says things like, "Be sure you're by your phone," so he can call you if he can't find the house, as he couldn't with ours without help. He also asks a lot of questions to make sure he can help you and that it's worth paying him to come. He will often be taking your call while he is at a job, and he often asks if he can call you back when he's finished with that customer. He is hyper-reliable about calling back, and super-organized as to who he has to call and where he is going next. All of these things are designed to make your life easier and cheaper, and to manage his business efficiently. He wants happy customers. Yeah, he is direct in his communication, like most New Yorkers, which I think is a good thing. He is proud of his reputation for honesty. His prices are more than fair. This is a very-competent, very-experienced repair person who wants repeat business and doesn't rip people off like some do. He is very-busy (just count the number of calls he gets while he is at your place), but tries like the dickens to come the same day or next day, which is wonderful. He knows that it's an emergency to you. I genuinely like the guy, and he is welcome in our house any time. read more

The primary thing a customer hopes for is honesty and Steve delivers. I had two issues (dishwasher and refrigerator ice maker) and Steve was completely honest, not trying to make a quick buck. He told me he could fix my dishwasher issue but i'd be better off just buying a new one and getting the warranty this time. Similarly with the ice maker, he informed me that the ice maker itself wasn't broken; the problem was it wasn't receiving power (a much bigger/expensive issue to solve). I needed an appliance repair a few years ago and found Steve via google. I knew what the problem was but did not have the part or the expertise to fix it. I informed Steve of the part needed and he arrived soon with the part and fixed the appliance in five minutes. It wasn't cheap but it was cheaper than buying a new appliance. Our range originally had one left burner out, and we lived with it. Then the other left burner stopped working, and we decided to fix them. Based on online searching it seemed we could do it ourselves, and so we purchased the two parts online, fully returnable. After our "repair" all four wouldn't work, though nothing we touched had any import to the still working burners. We called Steve on Columbus Day, and he was over in about one hour. We gave him the whole history, and the upshot was we will be getting a new range from PC Richard. The $50 service charge was well worth it. This guy is the the straightest shooter who has ever shot straight. My parents always use him and swear by his work, so I gave him a call when my dishwasher stopped working. He picked up immediately, listened to the problem on the phone, and without hesitation, said the repair would cost $350 minimum (likely more), and that he didn't think it was worth it, as the new part would likely malfunction again (in other words, he didn't just turn down this job - but potentially future jobs as well). He was friendly and offered his opinion on dishwasher brands, and was insistent that it's not worth making this repair. After a few days of searching for dishwashers, my husband and I got a bit fed up, and called Steve back thinking we'll just fix the old one (even if it's expensive) and be done with it. Sharing my first experience with Steve - My washing machine flooded my basement and I was looking to buy new washing machine. I found Steve's number from nextdoor/Gibson site and decided to call him to see if I can get an estimate on repair. 1) He Picked up my call and it was weekend and gave me appointment. 2) He was busy in the weekend but just to help me out, he came on Sunday before the actual appointment time. Its not easy to find anyone on Sundays. 3) He is master in his area, he opened the machine and knew that the issue can be caused by two things - and I am bringing this up to tell you his honesty, if it was caused by switch it was $200 and if it was caused by a pipe it was $90.
