I was craving a poke bowl so I decided to try this spot out. It's located in the food court (lower level) of Garden State Plaza mall. If you've never had poke before, it's basically a Hawaiian version of Chipotle. You choose a base, protein (which is typically raw fish), toppings, and sauce(s). I ordered one of their signature items, the Yuzu Ponzu Salmon ($16-$18). It included brown rice, salmon, cucumber, sweet onion, pineapple, cilantro, seaweed salad, green onion, sesame seeds, onion crisps, and ponzu sauce. I also added spicy salmon. The portion size for the proteins was really small.... I get bigger scoops of ice cream. While the ingredients were very fresh, my bowl lacked overall flavor harmony. I didn't get the citrus-y, tangy, and sweet flavors I expected. I guess I made a bad choice? I also ordered a mango lemonade ($2.75) which was good, but nothing special. Overall not the greatest value for almost $20. They do have a $2 discount if you check in on Yelp. No matter if you're a newb to Poke or a Poke-tarian, I still recommend going with the Poke Your Way (aka a custom bowl/salad) because you can determine the exact ingredients in your order. For custom bowls/salads, you can choose 2 or 3 proteins, unlimited mix-ins, 1 flavor, a fair number of free toppings and unlimited free crunch. My wife and I both ordered 2 custom bowls and they were mmmm mmm hit the spot good. The ingredients tasted fresh, most importantly the fish, but what we really loved most was that they didn't skim on any ingredients and filled the bowl to the brim, which not all poke restaurants do. I went there for an interview .. I had a nasty lady interview me. I showed her how I had 30 years in the restaurant business . I showed her my resume obviously she cant read because she said do you have any experience working with food.. I said yes I have 30 years experience expediting setting plates up etc.. So she apparently didnt understand my resume. So she was under the impression that I had no experience come the end of the interview. Now this was probably because I was an older man im not a kid so she just wanted to get rid of me. I just have one thing to say to that rude lady.. I would've done a better job than the rest of your staff. I had to get that off my chest. I simply love this Pokeworks and I will usually order here every time I am at the Garden State Plaza. It's very hard to find good / healthy options in a food court but Pokeworks brings it! While my kids want their standard Chick-fil-A, I always opt for a fresh, delicious Pokeworks bowl. I've had many good bowls at Pokeworks but my favorite is the Hawaiian Ahi. I'll have it with just a salad base, just a brown rice base, or a mixture of both. It's always very good no matter how you get it. Their ingredients are always fresh (the ahi tuna is SO GOOD) when I've ordered and the service is always kind and helpful. I usually get my bowl with a light amount of sauce and that always seems to be enough. Sometimes I will indulge and get myself the Coco Mango Haupia, which is always so good and so creamy. Do yourself a favor and get it! Last time I ordered, the person behind me ordered a burrito version of the bowl and that intrigued me! Next time I am totally getting a burrito! So Pokeworks wanted to make amends and sent me a complimentary coupon which I got to use this past weekend some 3 months after I received it after my subpar experience at this Garden State Plaza location, and being a nice guy that I am, I was rooting for them (my fave poke joint in NYC in 2017) and unfortunately, they largely failed. First of all, if you're gonna give me a comp, TRAIN YOUR PEOPLE to know how to use it! I do not blame the manager there who literally was trying for like 15 minutes to figure out how to use it because her system didn't have ability to take my "code" which was emailed to me by HQ. Listen, Pokeworks - why the junior mistake? I had to patiently wait by the register for 15 minutes, then go sit down for like 5-7 more minutes, before going back up there to finally pay for my drink and bring the food back to eat. If my initial critique was largely around untrained staff, maybe you should've learned to ensure that the said staff can accommodate the comp you've given me as a kind gesture to try your outfit again.... seems obvious, no? I'm giving a 3-star only because the ingredient bar was definitely much more improved (cleaner) and everything was fresh though not at NYC level (I don't expect that anyway at mall food court). My second time eating Pokeworks at this location. While I ordered their signature bowl last time, I opted for a custom bowl this time. They allow for unlimited toppings (except for the avocado) but be aware of the white lady's passive judgmental stare... I still added as much toppings as I wanted but felt peeved with the white lady. She didn't ruin the eating experience for me though! The meal was delicious and fulfilling - I ordered the brown rice, salmon & shrimp , and most of the toppings , the gochujang and the ponzu sauces, and garlic crisps. Safe to say the white lady was relieved I was leaving. I've only ever had poke bowls in NYC at poke bowl station because their bowl prices are amazing (unlimited toppings) & come with a bubble tea. I came to catch a movie at Westfield Garden State. Hungry for dinner I was in the mood for something light but tasty. So I decided Pokeworks. The do it yourself poke bowl is like Chipotle except it's better because of the unlimited topping. You would walk down the line and tell the servers the proteins (2 or 3), base (brown rice, white rice, greens) sauce, then toppings. Once you pay, you take your food to any available table or booth in the dining area. Since it's Saturday, the food court was quite busy and loud. I chose spicy salmon & seasoned lobster as my proteins. I asked for half salad and half brown rice, ponzo fresh sauce then tons of toppings. Overall it came out to be about $17. I was hungry so I forgot a pic. But this bowl was tasty!! It got my tongue in all the right spot. It was salty, lightly sweet, sour & spicy. It was a very satisfying but didn't feel heavy. I decided to try a new spot in the food court. I'm a big sushi/poke fan so figured I'd give Pokeworks a try. I got the umami ahi combo meal which includes the poke bowl, a side of miso soup and a drink for almost $17. The combos not shown on the menu but I saw it on the online menu. My boyfriend built his own bowl with 3 proteins. My bowl was really good. I was nervous the potions were small but it was very filling. My ahi tuna tasted fresh and the toppings and sauce were good. My boyfriend had spicy salmon, ahi tuna and spicy tuna. The spicy salmon tasted a little off. But overall he liked his bowl. As some have said, the white rice base doesn't taste exactly like sushi rice but it's still good. The miso soup isn't that authentic but it's good, not amazing. They make it in a timely matter and always double check your order. You can tell though that everything just sits around for most of the day cause nothing tastes fresh. I paid $28 for two small "sushi burritos" that were wrapped so poorly that they came unrolled after one bite. I also wasn't pleased that I paid over a dollar each to add avocado to The burritos , and the worker literally added one piece of avocado . What the? I also noticed that instead of arranging the ingredients evenly in a row/ horizontally across the rice and seaweed sheet , the employee making the burrito put the ingredients in random places so every bite had different tastes . I got their Shiso Salmon regular bowl and a miso soup side. The portion was ok for $10.95 and the sauce was honestly the best thing on the plate. The plate comes with onions, edamame, cilantro, salmon and a choice of brown or white rice or noodles as the base. It tasted ok but the white rice lacks flavor. It's not like sushi rice but it really should be. It just didn't compliment the ingredients. The miso was sort of weird. Had something in it that I wish wasn't there and wayyyyyyyyyyy too much green onions. That should've been a garnish but it had way more onions that tofu. They lost a star because they don't give out cups of tap water. Had I known that, I probably would've gotten the sense that they nickel and dime you here. Pokeworks is located in the food court section of the mall so it's easy to locate if you're in the mood for food. I went with the "poke your way" and you basically get to chose what you want to order whether it's in a bowl, burrito or salad. Along with that you can pick your protein, add mix ins, choose a flavor, add toppings and crunch. The sushi rice was kinda mushy and a little wet compared to what I'm use to and the fish had a little after taste to it that was a bit fishy imo. I did have it to go and ate it at home instead of eating it right away so that may have been why it was a bit fishy? I'm not too sure. But other than that everything else tasted really good. The fish cubes were a decent size and everything was well proportioned and tasty. Definitely recommend trying if poke is something new to you and you're curious about trying it! read more

Great spot that was needed in the Paramus area! I came here twice already during my lunch and had a great experience both times. However, someone I was with ordered a salad bowl with tuna and spicy salmon (the spicy salmon is not whole chunks of salmon) with the classic sauce and liked it a lot - even bought another to go.
